Summary The effect of thickening of the crustal layer in mountainous region on the dispersion curve of Love waves has been studied. Perturbation method has been applied to obtain the modified frequency equation for Love waves through the surface of separation between a semi-infinite material and a layer the thickness of which abruptly increases throughout a certain length of the path. The effect is to decrease the phase velocity of the waves particularly in the low period range. It has been pointed out that by proper study, the amount of thickening may be obtained.  相似文献

This is an experimental study of the mixing induced by coincident surface waves in a liquid. The main mechanism leading to the emergence of mixing was shown to be the middle currents generated by coincident waves. The regime of these currents strongly depends on the amplitude of surface waves. For waves of near-critical amplitudes, an intense turbulization of middle currents is observed. Patterns of the velocity field were obtained using the Particle Imaging Velocimetry (PIV) technique for different amplitudes of surface waves. The results obtained can be used to estimate mixing in the near-surface oceanic layer.  相似文献

Locations and depths to magnetic contacts were estimated from the total intensity magnetic field using the Horizontal Gradient Magnitude (HGM), Analytic Signal Amplitude (ASA) and Local Wavenumber (LWN) methods. Aeromagnetic data from the Ibadan area, in south-western Nigeria, were analyzed to estimate depths to magnetic sources as well as source locations. The minimum/maximum depth limits of the HGM and LWN are relatively close and comparable, while shallow source depths limits are greater than expected in the ASA method when compared with the HGM and LWN functions.  相似文献

Wave equations in an anisotropic plasma imbedded in a moving dielectric medium have been derived through Maxwell-Minkowski relations. The Middle Cambrian succession of the Parahio Valley in general and Debsakhad section in particular is dominated by trilobites. Genus Opsidiscus, along with other trilobite forms dominates the lower Middle Cambrian succession. In the present study two new species of Opsidiscus, Opsidiscus wadiai and Opsidiscus srikantiai are reported from the lower Middle Cambrian succession of Debsakhad section. The species were differentiated on their morphological features and their multivariate analysis. The multivariate analysis applied here is used as a supplement method to qualitative analysis in order to differentiate between the cranidial characters of Opsidiscus. The qualitative study of each species studied individually shows more or less close affiliation as is observed by different quantitative methods. The presence of Opsidiscus has a great stratigraphic significance in this region, as they first appear from informal Stage 5 of Series 3 and goes up to the Drumian Stage of Series 3 of the Cambrian System in the Debsakhad section, which helps to correlate this section with other well known sections of the Middle Cambrian.  相似文献

This study presents mineralogical and thermobarometric data for equilibrium peridotite assemblages from the V. Grib kimberlite pipe of the Arkhangelsk diamond province. We provided the first constraints on the composition, structure, thermal state, and lower boundary of the lithospheric mantle beneath the V. Grib kimberlite pipe. It was found that phlogopite-free and phlogopite-bearing peridotite xenoliths can be distinguished by their mineral chemistry. The occurrence of phlogopite in peridotites may represent evidence for modal metasomatism responsible for variation in the mineral composition of phlogopite-pyrope and pyrope peridotites. On the basis of P-T estimates, we conclude that modal metasomatism may have affected the entire thickness of the lithospheric mantle beneath the V. Grib kimberlite pipe. Comparison of our results with the available data from the literature shows strong vertical and lateral mantle heterogeneity beneath kimberlite pipes of the Lomonosov deposit and the V. Grib pipe.  相似文献

Summary Generally Love-wave is absent in the corresponding spectrum of the phase in the low period range when the path tranversed is oceanic. ButOliver, Ewing & Press were able to observe this phase in seismograms of volcanic islands like Honolulu, Bermuda and others. Here, it has been attempted to explain why these waves could be recorded at volcanic stations and not elsewhere. It has been supposed that the lava settles down to form a transversely isotropic layer. Green's Function technique has been adopted to solve the problem of propagation of Love-waves through a crust whose thickness gradually decreases towards the ocean.  相似文献
