Relative travel-time residuals computed from clear P-wave arrivals at fourteen seismograph stations in the North Island, New Zealand, from five deep-focus events in the Banda Sea region, show large spatial variations of up to 3 sec. The variations can be explained by higher than normal velocities in the oceanic lithosphere which is underthrust to depths of 350 km beneath the North Island. After correction for crustal structure, the residuals imply an average P-wave velocity about 11% higher than in the surrounding mantle. The lack of suitable source events at azimuths other than northwest prevents a more detailed investigation by this means.  相似文献

The transformation from smectite to chlorite has been interpreted as involving either a disequilibrium chlorite/smectite mixed‐layering sequence, or an equilibrated discontinuous sequence involving smectite–corrensite–chlorite. Here, analysis of the smectite to chlorite transition in different geothermal systems leads us to propose that the transformation proceeds via three contrasting reaction pathways involving (i) a continuous mixed‐layer chlorite/smectite series; (ii) a discontinuous smectite–corrensite–chlorite series and (iii) a direct smectite to chlorite transition. Such contrasting pathways are not in accord with an equilibrium mineral reaction series, suggesting that these pathways record kinetically controlled reaction progress. In the geothermal systems reviewed the style of reaction pathway and degree of reaction progress is closely correlated with intensity of recrystallization, and not to differences in thermal gradients or clay grain size. This suggests a kinetic effect linked to variation in fluid/rock ratios and/or a contrast between advective or diffusive fluid transport. The mode of fluid transport provides a means by which the rates of dissolution/nucleation/growth can control the reaction style and the reaction progress of the smectite to chlorite transition. Slow rates of growth are linked to the first reaction pathway involving mixed‐layering, while increasing rates of growth, relative to nucleation, promote the generation of more ordered structures and ultimately lead to the direct smectite to chlorite transition, representative of the third pathway.  相似文献

Many in Western Europe regard it as being in the grip of a refugee crisis. This paper considers this contention. It describes the main stages in the development of the current refugee crisis and argues that having established the agenda in the 1940s, Western Europe has been able to progressively distance itself from refugee episodes and define them as essentially problems of the Third World. The end of the Cold War and the growth in numbers of spontaneous, rather than quota, refugees have been considerable shocks to the West, which can no longer contain and distance itself from refugee flows. Shock has led Europe to overreact and become myopic in its view of refugee matters. In reality, figures demonstrate that Wetern Europe is not the centre of refugee generation, applications or resettlement. Despite this, governments have taken draconian unilateral and multilateral action to exclude not only Third World asylum seekers but also those from the East.  相似文献

Estimation of global atmospheric emissions from biomass burning has used a variety of procedures, most of which involve chain multiplication. The terms in the chain of inference are often poorly quantified, and in many cases there is reason to suspect bias and intercorrelation between terms. The leading estimates appear to have been conservative; however, uncertainty explodes when imprecisely known (coefficient of variation >0.3) terms are multiplied. Thus little confidence can be had in the precision of current best estimates. The situation can be improved through a combination of spatial disaggregation and process-oriented modeling.  相似文献

Although accuracy of digital elevation models (DEMs) can be quantified and measured in different ways, each is influenced by three main factors: terrain character, sampling strategy and interpolation method. These parameters, and their interaction, are discussed. The generation of DEMs from digitised contours is emphasised because this is the major source of DEMs, particularly within member countries of OEEPE. Such DEMs often exhibit unwelcome artifacts, depending on the interpolation method employed. The origin and magnitude of these effects and how they can be reduced to improve the accuracy of the DEMs are also discussed.  相似文献

To try to resolve the conflicts surrounding the influence of salts on frost weathering, chalk cubes were immersed, separately, in solutions of sodium chloride, sodium sulphate, and magnesium sulphate at concentrations of 5·5 per cent and 12·5 per cent, in a mixed solution of sodium chloride and sodium sulphate, and in distilled water. The cubes were subjected to six freeze-thaw cycles with temperatures ranging from either +15 to — 10°C or + 15 to — 30°C. The results confirm that frost weathering can be enhanced by the presence of certain salts, but the degree of enhancement depends both on the concentration and type of salt and on the intensity of the freeze-thaw regime. Some, but not all, of the results can be explained by the phase changes that occur during the freezing of the salt solutions.  相似文献
