Rock-magnetic techniques have become a useful tool in environmental issues; in particular, magnetic studies constitute an
alternative way to study pollution in different media. The present contribution focuses on magnetic parameters as pollution
indicators, especially from their relationship with contents of heavy metals. The work was carried out in two Indian rivers
located in Tamil Nadu, southern India. Several sediment samples were collected and studied in the laboratory using magnetic
techniques, magnetic susceptibility, anhysteric remanent magnetization, isothermal remanent magnetization, and chemical techniques
to determine contents of heavy metals. Magnetic mineralogy indicates the predominance of ferrimagnetic minerals; although
magnetite-like minerals are the main magnetic carriers, antiferromagnetic minerals can be present as subordinate carriers.
Concentration-dependent magnetic parameters revealed noticeable differences between both rivers, e.g. magnetic susceptibility
is four times higher in Cauvery than in Palaru River. Moreover, such increase can be interpreted as “magnetic enhancement”
and therefore related to the pollution status. This magnetic enhancement indicated a different pollutant contribution in both
rivers, and also, a different spatial distribution along these rivers, where critical (or more polluted) sites were identified.
On the other hand, univariate and multivariate statistical analyses—e.g. PCoordA, Multifactorial Analysis of distance, PCA
and RDA—were examined, revealing a link between magnetic and chemical variables. Among magnetic parameters, the concentration-dependent
magnetic parameters (e.g. magnetic susceptibility) seem to be the most relevant for this study. 相似文献

Water stress during crop cultivation due to inconsistent rainfall is a common phenomenon in maize growing area of Shanmuganadi watershed, located in the semi-arid region of southern peninsular India. The objective is to estimate the supplementary irrigation required to improve the crop productivity during water stress period. Spatial hydrological model, Soil and Water Assessment Tool, has been applied to simulate the watershed hydrology and crop growth for rabi season (October–February) considering the rainfed and irrigated scenarios. The average water stress days of rainfed maize was 60 days with yield of 1.6 t/ha. Irrigated maize with supplementary irrigation of 93–126 mm was resulted in improved yield of 3.8 t/ha with 28 water stress days. The results also suggest that supplemental irrigation can be obtained from groundwater reserves and by adopting early sowing strategy can provide opportunities for improving water productivity in rainfed farming. 相似文献

Bioremediation of chromates using bacteria primarily involves the removal/reduction of heavy metals in effluent using indigenous micro-organisms such as chromium reducing bacteria as biosorbents for cleaner and healthier environment. In the present study, the removal of hexavalent chromium by micro-organisms isolated from acclimatized tannery effluent was investigated. Biochemical assays and molecular sequencing revealed strain SRS05 to be Stenotrophomonas maltophilia. Resistance to chromium was determined by agar and broth dilution assays followed by determination of minimal inhibitory concentration. Strain SRS05 was able to resist 400 mg/ml of chromium which reflects that the heavy metal could be utilized by the micro-organism for its growth. Results by atomic absorption spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopic analysis and scanning electron microscopy revealed effective biosorption of chromium by S. maltophilia SRS05 with no intracellular changes morphologically indicating the stability of the organism in the presence of chromium. It is therefore recommended that this bacterium can be used widely for remediation of hexavalent chromium although the genetic basis for observations concluded in this study is to be confirmed. 相似文献

Late Quaternary sediments representing the floodplain, estuary and offshore environments of southern Kerala were investigated to infer provenance. The grain size reveals the dominance of sand to silty clay, clay to clayey silt and clayey silt in the floodplain, estuary and offshore sediments, respectively. The chemical index of alteration (CIA) values and A-CN-K plot attributes to high, moderate and low weathering in floodplain, estuary and offshore regions, respectively. The SiO2/Al2O3 values lesser than Post-Archean Australian Shale indicate low to moderate maturity for the estuarine and offshore sediments. The geochemical immaturity indicates its derivation from low to moderately weathered source rocks. The major and trace elemental ratios and discriminant function diagrams attribute that the sediments were derived from intermediate to felsic source rocks. The enrichment of Cr and Ni concentration in the sediments compared to the upper continental crust, related to the contribution of orthopyroxenes, weathered from charnockite and garnets from the granulite terrain, respectively. 相似文献

Development of a spectral library is a prerequisite for the higher order classification of satellite data and hyperspectral image analysis to map any ecosystem with rich diversity. In this study, sampling methodology, collection of field and laboratory spectral signatures and post-processing methodologies were investigated for developing an exclusive spectral library of mangrove species using hyperspectral spectroscopic techniques. Canopy level field spectra and leaf level laboratory spectra were collected for 34 species (25 true and 9 associated mangroves) from two different mangrove ecosystems of the Indian east coast. Post-processing steps such as removal of water vapour absorption bands, correction of drifts which occur due to the thermal properties of the instrument during data collection and smoothing of spectra for its further utilisation were applied on collected spectra. A simple statistical model of daily precipitation based on the gamma distribution is applied to summer (JJA in Northern Hemisphere, DJF in Southern Hemisphere) data from eight countries: Canada, the United States, Mexico, the former Soviet Union, China, Australia, Norway, and Poland. These constitute more than 40% of the global land mass, and more than 80% of the extratropical land area. It is shown that the shape parameter of this distribution remains relatively stable, while the scale parameter is most variable spatially and temporally. This implies that the changes in mean monthly precipitation totals tend to have the most influence on the heavy precipitation rates in these countries. Observations show that in each country under consideration (except China), mean summer precipitation has increased by at least 5% in the past century. In the USA, Norway, and Australia the frequency of summer precipitation events has also increased, but there is little evidence of such increases in any of the countries considered during the past fifty years. A scenario is considered, whereby mean summer precipitation increases by 5% with no change in the number of days with precipitation or the shape parameter. When applied in the statistical model, the probability of daily precipitation exceeding 25.4 mm (1 inch) in northern countries (Canada, Norway, Russia, and Poland) or 50.8 mm (2 inches) in mid-latitude countries (the USA, Mexico, China, and Australia) increases by about 20% (nearly four times the increase in mean). The contribution of heavy rains (above these thresholds) to the total 5% increase of precipitation is disproportionally high (up to 50%), while heavy rain usually constitutes a significantly smaller fraction of the precipitation events and totals in extratropical regions (but up to 40% in the tropics, e.g., in southern Mexico). Scenarios with moderate changes in the number of days with precipitation coupled with changes in the scale parameter were also investigated and found to produce smaller increases in heavy rainfall but still support the above conclusions. These scenarios give changes in heavy rainfall which are comparable to those observed and are consistent with the greenhouse-gas-induced increases in heavy precipitation simulated by some climate models for the next century. In regions with adequate data coverage such as the eastern two-thirds of contiguous United States, Norway, eastern Australia, and the European part of the former USSR, the statistical model helps to explain the disproportionate high changes in heavy precipitation which have been observed. 相似文献

Multi-element geochemistry and mineralogy are used to characterize the chemical composition, degree of paleo-weathering, provenance and tectonic settings of the Neogene sedimentary rocks of Borneo Basin of east Malaysia. Sedimentary rocks are classified as extremely weathered sandstones (i.e. wacke, arkose, litharenite, Fe-sandstone and quartz arenite). Wacke, arkose, litharenite and Fe-sandstone are characterized by post-depositional K-metasomatism and zircon enrichment through sediment recycling. Geochemical characteristics suggest a mixed-nature provenance for the sandstones and the variable tectonic settings possibly mirror the complexity of the basin. Enriched Cr in quartz arenite and Fe-sandstone are related to the contribution from ophiolite or fractionation of Cr-bearing minerals. 相似文献

As a typical inland river basin in arid Northwest China, having distinct hydrological characteristics and severe and representative
water problems, the Heihe River Basin (HRB) has attracted considerable research interest worldwide and in 2007
became a pilot basin of the G-WADI network of UNESCO/IHP. Many research programs have been conducted in the HRB
since the 1980s, producing rich knowledge and data about the basin, which will be very helpful to further studies. This paper
reviews research efforts related to hydrologic modeling and ongoing model integration studies performed in the HRB in recent
years. Recently, an observation network covering the whole area and a Web-based data-sharing system have been established
which can greatly improve data acquisition. This paper tabulates modeling activities in past years, including model applications,
model modifications and enhancements, and model coupling efforts. Also described is a preliminary modeling integration
tool designed to quickly build new models, which has been developed for hydrologic modeling purposes. Challenges
and issues confronted in current studies are discussed, pointing toward key research directions in the future. 相似文献
