Basin-wide Holocene environmental changes in the marginal area of the Asian monsoon,northwest China 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
In arid regions, because of spatial variability, using single climate records is difficult to reconstruct the past climate
change for the drainage basins. Holocene environmental records were collected from the upper, middle and lower regions of
the Shiyang River drainage basin in the marginal area of the Asian monsoon (northwest China). The main objective of this paper
was to compare the records from the terminal lake and the middle and upper reaches of the basin to study the basin-wide environmental
changes. During the early Holocene the vegetation was sparse, and the effective moisture was relatively low in the basin.
The Holocene Climatic Optimum started between 7.0 and 8.0 cal ka BP, during which the lake level reached the highest level
in the terminal lake; the vegetation density and the effective moisture reached the highest level during the Holocene in the
drainage basin. From 4.7 cal ka BP the terminal lake began to shrink, while the vegetation density decreased dramatically.
In the middle and upper regions of the drainage, the effective moisture began to decrease since 3.5 cal ka BP, and the arid
tendency was earlier in the terminal lake than it was in the middle and upper regions of the drainage basin. During the early
Holocene the relatively arid environment was affected by the gradually intensifying East Asian monsoon and the dry westerly
winds. The mid-Holocene Optimum benefited from the intensive East Asian monsoon and the humid westerly winds. Then, the East
Asian monsoon retreated since the late-Holocene. In the basin the arid tendency may be related to the retracting of the East
Asian monsoon. However, the intensifying acidification after 1.5 cal ka BP may be correlated to the increasing dryness of

Submersed aquatic vegetation (SAV) communities have undergone declines worldwide, exposing them to invasions from non-native
species. Over the past decade, the invasive species Hydrilla verticillata has been documented in several tributaries of the lower Chesapeake Bay, Virginia. We used annual aerial mapping surveys from
1998 to 2007, integrated with spatial analyses of water quality data, to analyze the patterns and rates of change of a H. verticillata-dominated SAV community and relate them to varying salinity and light conditions. Periods of declining SAV coverage corresponded
to periods where salinities exceeded 7 and early growing season (April to May) Secchi depths were <0.4 m. Increases were driven
by the expansion of H. verticillata along with several other species into the upper estuary, where some areas experienced an 80% increase in cover. Field investigations
revealed H. verticillata dominance to be limited to the upper estuary where total suspended solid concentrations during the early growing season were
<15 mg l−1 and salinity remained <3. The effect of poor early growing season water clarity on annual SAV growth highlights the importance
of water quality during this critical life stage. Periods of low clarity combined with periodic salinity intrusions may limit
the dominance of H. verticillata in these types of estuarine systems. This study shows the importance of the use of these types of biologically relevant episodic
events to supplement seasonal habitat requirements and also provides evidence for the potential important role of invasive

The Yushu County, Qinghai Province, China, April 14, 2010, earthquake triggered thousands of landslides in a zone between
96°20′32.9″E and 97°10′8.9″E, and 32°52′6.7″N and 33°19′47.9″N. This study examines the use of geographic information system
(GIS) technology and Bayesian statistics in creating a suitable landslide hazard-zone map of good predictive power. A total
of 2,036 landslides were interpreted from high-resolution aerial photographs and multi-source satellite images pre- and post-earthquake,
and verified by selected field checking before a final landslide-inventory map of the study area could be established using
GIS software. The 2,036 landslides were randomly partitioned into two subsets: a training dataset, which contains 80 % (1,628
landslides), for training the model; and a testing dataset 20 % (408 landslides). Twelve earthquake triggered landslide associated
controlling parameters, such as elevation, slope gradient, slope aspect, slope curvature, topographic position, distance from
main surface ruptures, peak ground acceleration, distance from roads, normalized difference vegetation index, distance from
drainages, lithology, and distance from all faults were obtained from variety of data sources. Landslide hazard indices were
calculated using the weight of evidence model. The landslide hazard map was compared with training data and testing data to
obtain the success rate and predictive rate of the model, respectively. The validation results showed satisfactory agreement
between the hazard map and the existing landslide distribution data. The success rate is 80.607 %, and the predictive rate
is 78.855 %. The resulting landslide hazard map showed five classes of landslide hazard, i.e., very high, high, moderate,
low and very low. The landslide hazard evaluation map should be useful for environmental recovery planning and reconstruction

The cell dimensions and crystal structures of the fluoroperovskite NaMgF3 (neighborite), synthesized by solid state methods, have been determined by powder neutron diffraction and Rietveld refinement
over the temperature range 300–3.6 K using Pt metal as an internal standard for calibration of the neutron wavelength. These
data show that Pbnm NaMgF3 does not undergo any phase transitions to structures of lower symmetry with decreasing temperature. The cell dimensions and
atomic coordinates together with polyhedron volumes and distortion indices are given for Pbnm NaMgF3 at 25 K intervals from 300 to 3.6 K. Decreases in the a and c cell dimensions reach a saturation point at 50 K, whereas the b dimension becomes saturated at 150 K. The distortion of the structure of Pbnm NaMgF3 from the aristotype cubic
structure is described in terms of the tilting of the MgF6 octahedra according to the tilt scheme a

. With decreasing temperature the antiphase tilt (a
−) increases from 14.24° to 15.39°, whereas the in-phase tilt (c

) remains effectively constant at ∼10.7°. Changes in the tilt angles are insufficient to cause changes in the coordination

In Bangladesh, development of the groundwater resource for irrigation is a vital component of the government’s agricultural
strategy to attain food self-sufficiency. Amidst reports of falling groundwater levels in many parts of Bangladesh, the potential
of groundwater use has been investigated in the Teesta Barrage Project (TBP) in which large-scale groundwater development
for dry-season irrigation has taken place in the recent past. Several techniques and tools have been applied such as the combination
of analysis of groundwater hydrographs and mathematical modelling to derive key hydrogeological variables, calculation of
net irrigation requirement and the use of geographical information systems. The results show that the economically attractive
high-yielding variety (HYV) Boro (dry season) rice cultivation during the groundwater irrigation season may not be sustained in large parts of the project
area if the current trends in abstraction are continued. However, due to spatial variation in abstraction, nine thanas (sub-districts)—out of a total of 21 in the project area—may still be able to expand groundwater-irrigated cropland and a
groundwater-use potential of 40 mm/year may be created if deep-set shallow tubewells are used by the farmers to abstract groundwater.
A structured approach, based on zoning of potential areas, is recommended for groundwater development and use.
Resumen En Bangladesh, el desarrollo de las aguas subterráneas para riego es un componente vital del la estrategia agrícola del Gobierno para obtener la auto-suficiencia alimentaria. Un informe intermedio evidencia un descenso de los niveles de aguas subterráneas en muchas partes de Bangladesh, el uso potencial de aguas subterránea ha sido investigado en el Proyecto Tessta Barrage (TBP) en el cual ha tenido lugar el desarrollo de las aguas subterráneas a gran escala para el riego en la estación seca en un pasado reciente. Se ha aplicado algunas técnicas y herramientas, como la combinación del análisis de datos gráficos de aguas subterráneas y modelización matemática para obtener variables hidrogeológicas clave, el cálculo de la necesidad neta de riego y el uso de Sistemas de Información Geográfica. El resultado muestra que el cultivo, económicamente atractivo, de arroz HYV Boro (estación seca) durante la estación de riego con aguas subterráneas puede no ser sostenible en gran parte del área del proyecto si continúan las tendencias actuales en las extracciones. Sin embargo, debido a la variación espacial en la extracción, nueve thanas (subdistritos)—de un total de 21 en el área del Proyecto—pueden todavía sufrir un aumento de la tierra cultivable regada con aguas subterráneas y que se puede asumir un uso potencial de agua subterránea de 40 mm/estación si los granjeros utilizan sondeos someros instalados en fosas para la extracción. Se recomienda una aproximación estructurada para el desarrollo y uso de las aguas subterráneas, basada en la zonificación de áreas potenciales.
Résumé Au Bangladesh, l’exploitation des ressources en eau souterraines pour l’irrigation est une composante vitale de la stratégie agricole gouvernementale pour atteindre l’auto-suffisance alimentaire. Parmi les baisses de niveaux piézométriques rapportées sur de nombreuses régions du Bangladesh, le potentiel d’utilisation des eaux souterraines a été étudié sur le Projet de Barrage de Teesta (TBP), où, dans un passé récent, les eaux souterraines ont été massivement exploitées pour l’irrigation en saison sèche. De nombreux outils et techniques ont été utilisés, comme l’analyse combinée des chroniques piézométriques et des modèles mathématiques pour dégager les variables hydrogéologiques clés, le calcul des besoins nets pour l’irrigation, et l’utilisation des systèmes d’information géographique. Les résultats démontrent que la culture en saison d’irrigation de la variété de riz HYV Boro (saison sèche), économiquement attrayante, n’est potentiellement pas viable sur de nombreux secteurs de la zone étudiée si les prélèvements perdurent selon la tendance actuelle. Cependant, du fait de la variation spatiale des prélèvements, neuf thanas (sous-districts)—sur un total de 21 sur le secteur d’étude—pourraient encore augmenter les surfaces irriguées, et une disponibilité en eau de 40 mm/saison pourrait être générée si les agriculteurs utilisaient des puits peu profonds pour exploiter les ressources souterraines. A geophysical investigation of a landfill area was conducted as inextricable phase of a preliminary geotechnical, geological
and hydrogeological study of the area under investigation. Electrical resistivity tomography (ERT), one of the most promising
prospecting techniques mainly concerning its effective contribution to resolve several environmental problems, was applied
for the geophysical modeling. ERT is a robust imaging method the theory and implementation of which are well documented in
geophysical research literature. The survey site is located in Akrotirion Peninsula, about 7 km east of Chania city in Crete
I. The geological setting comprises Trypalion limestones, marly limestones and a clayed weathered layer. Cavities are also
identified at various scales which are recent tectono-karstic voids. Due to the above-mentioned geological singularity and
in the light of the requirement for an environmentally safe construction of the landfill, an ERT survey was carried out. Specifically,
seven geoelectrical tomographies were conducted reaching the prospecting depth of 36 m. The resulted images conduced, to overcome
geotechnical problems since the spatial distribution of karstic voids was determined, to plan the future sites for waste disposal
as the geological conditions were studied in detail and to reliably estimate the thickness of the already deposited wastes.
The resulted images were confirmed using available borehole logs and ambient noise measurements. 相似文献

Natural hazards can be represented as point processes that are characterized by the occurrence times of the events and their
intensities. It is crucial to investigate the correlation properties of these processes in order to gain a deep knowledge
of the dynamical mechanisms which underlie hazardous phenomena. To this end, suitable methodologies must be developed to perform
these correlation analyses on processes, which are described as point-like processes. The concept of time-clustering implies
a time-structured organization of these processes, and is in direct opposition to the pure randomness typical of Poissonian
processes in which the events are uncorrelated. This article reports several examples of natural hazards within the framework
