Limb darkening and specific intensity data imply more continuous opacity in the solar photosphere between 2000 Å and 3500 Å than has been predicted theoretically. The temperature dependence and wavelength dependence of this missing opacity are in qualitative agreement with those deduced for the ion H3 +, but it is unlikely that H3 + is sufficiently abundant to account for this opacity.  相似文献

We investigate certain brightness variations seen in Saturn's A ring and find them to be due to vertical corrugations of the local ring plane caused by a spiral bending wave. This wave is resonantly excited by Mimas and propagates inward via the collective gravity of the ring particles. B. A. Smith et al. [Science212, 163–191 (1981)] had previously associated vertical relief with this feature due to its observed azimuthal variations and its proximity to an inclination resonance with Mimas. We develop the theory of forced bending waves, some aspects of which have been treated in the galactic context by C. Hunter and A. Toomre [Astrophys. J.155, 747–776 (1969)] and by G. Bertin and J.W.-K. Mark [Astron. Astrophys.88, 289–297 (1980)]. Our theory is in good agreement with the observations. In particular, the presence of these bending waves may resolve the conflict between ground-based estimates of 1–2 km for the global ring thickness [e.g., A. Brahic and B. Sicardy, Nature289, 447–450 (1981)] and Voyager stellar occultation measurements of <200 m for the local ring thickness [A. L. Lane et al., Science215, 537–543 (1982); E. A. Marouf and G. L. Tyler, Science217, 243–245 (1982)].  相似文献

We have classified 1858 lithic and vitreous fragments from the Luna 16 core-tube sample. They were taken from the soil fractions ranging in size from 150 to 425 μ, at levels A and G (γ). No important differences are observed between the proportions of particle types in levels A and G, nor between the soils of Luna 16 and those from the Apollo 11 landing site in the nearby Mare Tranquillitatis. Luna 16 basalts are texturally and mineralogically similar to Apollo 11 basalts, though the former are characterized by more Fe-rich olivines and pyroxenes and by lower ilmenite contents than are Apollo 11 basalts. The atomic ratio Al/Ti in Luna 16 basalt pyroxenes in about 1.5; Apollo 11 basalt pyroxenes have Al/Ti = 2.0, indicating the possibility of a lower mean valence for Ti in the Luna 16 material than in the Apollo 11 material. Most light-colored lithic fragments are anorthositic rather than noritic in character and are comparable to Apollo 11 anorthosites in mineral chemistry. We believe they are samples of terra regions to the north of the Luna 16 landing site. Triangular diagrams plotting normative plagioclase, normative mafics plus oxides, and normative orthoclase plus apatite neatly separate the three major types of lunar materials — mare basalts, anorthosites, and noritic rocks — and reveal that the Luna 16 regolith is composed of mare basalt and anorthosite, with very little norite component. Colorless-to-greenish glass occurs in the Luna 16 sample, which has high Fe and low Ti; it may represent gabbroic rock related to the anorthosites  相似文献

The main rings of Saturn were observed with the Planetary Camera of the WFPC2 instrument on the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) from September 1996 to December 2000 as the ring opening angle to Earth and Sun increased from 4° to 24°, with a spread of phase angles between 0.3° and 6° at each opening angle. The rings were routinely observed in the five HST wideband UBVRI filters (F336W, F439W, F555W, F675W, and F814W) and occasionally in the F255W, F785LP, and F1042M filters. The emphasis in this series of papers will be on radial color (implying compositional) variations. In this first paper we describe the analysis technique and calibration procedure, note revisions in a previously published Voyager ring color data analysis, and present new results based on over 100 HST images.In the 300-600 nm spectral range where the rings are red, the 555/336-nm ratio increases by about 14% as the phase angle increases from 0.3° to 6°. This effect, never reported previously for the rings, is significantly larger than the phase reddening which characterizes other icy objects, primarily because of the redness of the rings. However, there is no discernible tendency for color to vary with ring opening angle at a given phase angle, and there is no phase variation of color where the spectrum is flat. We infer from this combination of facts that multiple intraparticle scattering, either in a regolith or between facts of an unusually rough surface, is important in these geometries, but that multiple interparticle scattering in a vertically extended layer is not. Voyager color ratios at a phase angle of 14° are compatible with this trend, but calibration uncertainties prevent their use in quantitative modeling.Overall ring average spectra are compatible with those of earlier work within calibration uncertainties, but ring spectra vary noticeably with region. We refine and subdivide the regions previously defined by others. The variation seen between radial profiles of ratios between different wavelengths suggests the presence of multiple compositional components with different radial distributions. We present new radial profiles of far-UV color ratio (F336W/F255W) showing substantial global variations having a different radial structure than seen between 555 and 336 nm. We constrain radial variation in the strength of a putative 850-nm spectral feature to be at the percent level or less. There seem to be real variations in the shape of regional ring spectra between 800 and 1000 nm.  相似文献

Plume dispersion in the convective boundary layer (CBL) is investigated experimentally in a laboratory convection tank. The focusis on highly-buoyant plumes that loft near or become trapped in the CBL capping inversion and resistdownward mixing. Such plumes are defined by dimensionless buoyancy fluxes F* 0.1, where F* = Fb/(U w* 2 zi), Fb is the stack buoyancy flux,U is the mean wind speed, w* is the convective velocity scale, and zi is the CBL depth. The aim is to obtain statistically-reliable mean (C) and root-mean-square (rms, c) concentration fields as a function of F* and the dimensionless distance X = w*x/(U zi), where x is the distance downstream of the source.The experiments reveal the following mainresults: (1) For 3 X 4and F* 0.1, the crosswind-integrated concentration (CWIC) fields exhibit distinctly uniform profiles below zi with a CWIC maximum aloft, in contrast to the nonuniform profiles obtained earlier by Willis and Deardorff. (2) The lateral dispersion (y) variation with X is consistent with Taylor's theory for * 0.1 and a buoyancy-enhanced dispersion, y/zi F* 1/3X2/3, forF* = 0.2 and 0.4. (3) The entrapment, the plume fraction above zi, has a mean (E) that follows a systematic variationwith X and F*, and a variability (e/E) that is broad ( 0.3 to 2) near the source but subsides to 0.25 far downstream. (4) Vertical profiles of the concentration fluctuation intensity (c/C) are uniform for z < zi and X > 1.5, but exhibit significant increases: (a) at the surface and close to the source (X 1.5), and(b) in the entrainment zone. (5) The cumulative distribution functions (CDFs) of the scaled concentration fluctuations (c/c) separate into mixed-layer and entrainment-layer CDFs for X 2, with the mixed-layer group collapsing to a single distribution independent of z.These are the first experiments to obtain all components of the lateral and vertical dispersion parameters (rms meander, relative dispersion, total dispersion) for continuous buoyant releases in a convection tank. They also are the first tank experiments to demonstrate agreement with field observations of: (1) the scaled ground-level concentration along the plume centreline, and (2) the dimensionless lateral dispersion _y/z_i of buoyant plumes.  相似文献

Factors controlling the partitioning of old and new water contributions to stream flow were investigated for three events in four catchments (three of which were nested) at Sleepers River Research Watershed in Danville, Vermont. In the 1993 snowmelt period, two‐component isotopic hydrograph separations showed that new water (meltwater) inputs to the stream ranged widely from 41 to 74%, and increased with catchment size (41 to 11 125 ha) (with one exception) and with open land cover (0–73%). Peak dissolved organic carbon concentrations and relative alkalinity dilution in stream water ranked in the same order among catchments as the new water fractions, suggesting that new water followed shallow flow paths. During the 1994 snowmelt, despite similar timing and magnitude of melt inputs, the new‐water contribution to stream flow ranged only from 30 to 36% in the four catchments. We conclude that the uncommonly high and variable new water fractions in streamwater during the 1993 melt were caused by direct runoff of meltwater over frozen ground, which was prevalent in open land areas during the 1993 winter. In a high‐intensity summer rainstorm in 1993, new water fractions were smaller relative to the 1993 snowmelt, ranging from 28 to 46%, but they ranked in the identical catchment order. Reconciliation of the contrasting patterns of new–old water partitioning in the three events appears to require an explanation that invokes multiple processes and effects, including:
  • 1. topographically controlled increase in surface‐saturated area with increasing catchment size;
  • 2. direct runoff over frozen ground;
  • 3. low infiltration in agriculturally compacted soils;
  • 4. differences in soil transmissivity, which may be more relevant under dry antecedent conditions.
These data highlight some of the difficulties faced by catchment hydrologists in formulating a theory of runoff generation at varying basin scales. Copyright © 2002 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

The Bingham porphyry Cu-Au-Mo deposit, Utah, may only be world-class because of substantial contributions of sulfur and metals from mafic alkaline magma to an otherwise unremarkable calc-alkaline system. Volcanic mafic alkaline rocks in the district are enriched in Cr, Ni, and Ba as well as Cu, Au, platinum group elements (PGE), and S. The bulk of the volcanic section that is co-magmatic with ore-related porphyries is dacitic to trachytic in composition, but has inherited the geochemical signature of high Cr, Ni, and Ba from magma mixing with the mafic alkaline rocks. The volcanic section that most closely correlates in time with ore-related porphyries is very heterogeneous containing clasts of scoriaceous latite, latitic, and minette, and flows of melanephelinite, shoshonite, and olivine latite in addition to volumetrically dominant dacite/trachyte. Bingham ore-related porphyries show ample evidence of prior mixing with mafic alkaline magmas. Intrusive porphyries that have not been previously well-studied have several chemical and mineralogical indications of magma mixing. These "mixed" lithologies include the hybrid quartz monzonite porphyry, biotite porphyry, and minette dikes. Even some of the more silicic latite and monzonite porphyries retain high Cr and Ba contents indicative of mixing and contain trace amounts of sapphire (<1 mm). The heterogeneous block and ash flow deposits also contain sapphire and are permissively correlated with the intrusions based on chemical, mineralogical, and isotopic data. Magma mixing calculations suggest about 10% of the monzonitic/latitic ore-related magma may have been derived from mafic alkaline magma similar to the melanephelinite. If the original S content of the mafic magma was about 2,000-4,000 ppm, comparable with similar magmas, then the mafic magma may have been responsible for contributing more than half of the S and a significant portion of the Cu, Au, and PGE in the Bingham deposit.  相似文献

Indirect and direct geotechnical measurements revealed the presence of high lateral earth pressure (Ko) in shallow, unlithified sediment at a site in the northernmost Mississippi embayment region of the central United States. Results from pile-load and pressuremeter tests showed maximum Ko values greater than 10; however, the complex geologic environment of the Midcontinent made defining an origin for the anomalous Ko based solely on these measurements equivocal. Although in situ sediment characteristics indicated that indirect tectonic or nontectonic geologic mechanisms that include transient overburden loads (e.g., fluvial deposition/erosion, glacial advance/retreat) and dynamic shear loads (e.g., earthquakes) were not the dominant cause, they were unable to provide indicators for a direct tectonic generation. Localized stresses induced anthropogenically by the geotechnical field tests were also considered, but ruled out as the primary origin. A high-resolution shear-wave (SH) reflection image of geologic structure in the immediate vicinity of the test site revealed compression-style neotectonism, and suggested that the elevated stress was a tectonic manifestation. Post-Paleozoic reflectors exhibit a Tertiary (?) structural inversion, as evidenced by post-Cretaceous fault displacement and pronounced positive folds in the hanging wall of the interpreted faults. The latest stratigraphic extent of the stress effects (i.e., all measurements were in the Late Cretaceous to Tertiary McNairy Formation), as well as the relationship of stress orientation with the orientation of local structure and regional stress, remain unknown.
