This work was designed to analyze the hydrogeological behavior of an alluvial aquifer in the River Mojotoro basin site in the Province of Salta, Argentina. The study area presents coarse-grained sediments with high infiltration capacity. The hydraulic conductivity field is affected by the physical heterogeneity of the medium and a geostatistical method, kriging, was used to construct this field from local measurements. The groundwater flow velocity field is computed using a hybrid mixed finite-element method and small variations in the flow directions were determined. Given the existence of a point source of chloride in the region under study, the spatial distribution of the generated plume in the saturated zone is analyzed. The advection-diffusion equation describing the transport of chloride in vertical and horizontal cross-sectional planes of the aquifer is discretized employing a method of characteristics combined with a mixed finite-element procedure, which provides an efficient method to eliminate spurious numerical oscillations and handle the convective term in the equation. The migration of chloride shows patterns, which are affected by the litologic heterogeneities of the aquifer and the regional groundwater flow.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Poorly monitored catchments could pose a challenge in the provision of accurate flood predictions by hydrological models, especially in urbanized areas subject to heavy rainfall events. Data assimilation techniques have been widely used in hydraulic and hydrological models for model updating (typically updating model states) to provide a more reliable prediction. However, in the case of nonlinear systems, such procedures are quite complex and time-consuming, making them unsuitable for real-time forecasting. In this study, we present a data assimilation procedure, which corrects the uncertain inputs (rainfall), rather than states, of an urban catchment model by assimilating water-level data. Five rainfall correction methods are proposed and their effectiveness is explored under different scenarios for assimilating data from one or multiple sensors. The methodology is adopted in the city of São Carlos, Brazil. The results show a significant improvement in the simulation accuracy.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Flooding events can produce significant disturbances in underground transport systems within urban areas and lead to economic and socioenvironmental well-known consequences, which can be worsened by variations in the occurrence of weather and climate extremes. A better comprehension of these impacts and their conditions is consequently needed. Hence, this paper presents a state-of-the-art literature review on flood impact assessment in “metro” systems, analysing their purposes and their shortcomings. This document shows the adaptation measures dealing with specific classes of pluvial flood damages, besides identifying prospective paths towards the application of suitable actions facing actual and projected hazards in metro systems worldwide.  相似文献

Digestive glands of the mangrove mussel Mytella guyanensis, collected at one non-polluted site (site 1) and two polluted sites (sites 2 and 3), were analysed for different antioxidant defenses, lipid peroxidation and DNA damage. Thiobarbituric acid-reactive substance (TBARS) and 8-oxo-7,8-dihydro-2'-deoxyguanosine levels were enhanced at the polluted sites. With the exception of superoxide dismutase, the activities of catalase and glutathione peroxidase were also higher at the polluted sites. Greater increases were observed in glutathione reductase, glutathione S-transferase and etoxyresorufine-O-deethylase activities at the polluted sites. Conversely, reduced glutathione content was higher at the control site. Trace metal contents in mussels collected at polluted sites were increased compared to the control site, and there were strong positive correlations between TBARS and Cu and Pb contents. M. guyanensis is routinely exposed to an oxidative stress condition at both polluted sites, and considering xenobiotic bioaccumulation in bivalve molluscs, the mangrove mussel represents an excellent bioindicator for environmental monitoring studies.  相似文献

A theoretically exact relation is presented between the Fourier amplitude spectrum and the elastic input‐energy spectrum. This energy spectrum is computed from the Fourier acceleration amplitude spectrum and the real part of the relative velocity transfer function of the single‐degree‐of‐freedom elastic oscillator. Some accelerometric records collected worldwide are used to prove the solution. It is shown that the relation presented in this work opens the door for a better understanding of the relationship between the input‐energy spectrum and other seismological variables, such as magnitude and focal distance. Abstract Laguna Mar Chiquita, a highly variable closed saline lake located in the Pampean plains of central Argentina, is presently the largest saline lake in South America (≈ 6000 km2). Recent variations in its hydrological budget have produced dry and wet intervals that resulted in distinctive lake level fluctuations. Results of a multiproxy study of a set of sedimentary cores indicate that the system has clearly recorded these hydrological variations from the end of the Little Ice Age (≈ ad 1770) to the present. Sedimentological and geochemical data combined with a robust chronology based on 210Pb profiles and historical data provide the framework for a sedimentary model of a lacustrine basin with highly variable water depth and salinity. Lake level drops and concurrent increases in salinity promoted the development of gypsum–calcite–halite layers and a marked decrease in primary productivity. The deposits of these dry stages are evaporite‐bearing sediments with a low organic matter content. Conversely, highstands are recorded as diatomaceous organic matter‐rich muds. Average bulk sediment accumulation rose from 0·22 g cm?2 year?1 in lowstands to 0·32 g cm?2 year?1 during highstands. These results show that Laguna Mar Chiquita is a good sensor of high‐ and low‐frequency changes in the recent hydrological budget and, therefore, document climatic changes at middle latitudes in south‐eastern South America. Dry conditions were mostly dominant until the last quarter of the twentieth century, when a humid interval without precedent during the last 240 years of the lake's recorded history started. Thus, it is an ideal system to model sedimentary and geochemical response to environmental changes in a saline lacustrine basin.  相似文献

The interannual variability of the European winter air temperature is partially caused by anomalous atmospheric circulation and the associated advection of air masses, mainly linked to the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO). However, a considerable part of the temperature variability is not linearly described by atmospheric circulation anomalies. Here, a long control simulation with a coupled atmosphere-ocean climate model is analyzed, with the goal of decomposing the European temperature (ET) anomalies in a part linked to the anomalous atmospheric circulation and a residual. The amount of interannual variability of each contribution is roughly 50%, although at subdecadal (overdecadal) time scales the variability of the residuals is dominant. These residuals are found to be linked to temperature anomalies of the same sign in the whole North Atlantic and Greenland, in contrast to the well-known temperature zonal seesaw associated with the NAO. The association between the residuals and other processes in the North Atlantic has been also analyzed. The thermohaline circulation, closely connected in the model to the intensity of the Gulf Stream, lags the evolution of the temperature residuals by several years and thus is not able to control their evolution. The variability of the oceanic convection in the Northern North Atlantic, on the other hand, correlates with the temperature residual at lags close to zero. It is hypothesized that oceanic convection produces a sea-surface temperature fingerprint that leads to the ET residuals. The implications of these results for multi-year predictability and for empirical climate reconstructions are discussed.  相似文献

Geophysical Evidence for Terrane Boundaries in South-Central Argentina   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
The geological interpretation of high-resolution aeromagnetic data over the La Pampa province, in central Argentina, in addition to lower resolution magnetic information from the region of the Neuquén and Colorado basins, leads to the definition of the precise boundaries of the Chilenia, Cuyania, Pampia and Patagonia terranes, as well as that of the Río de la Plata Craton, within the study region. The high-resolution aeromagnetic survey data are compared and studied in conjunction with all the available geological information, to produce a map of the solid geology of this region, which is largely covered by Quaternary sediments. A number of structures of different magnitudes, as well as their relative chronology, are also recognized, i.e., regional faults, sub-regional faults, fractures and shear zones, as well as the most conspicuous magnetic fabric of the basement that reflects its main planar structures. Three different basements are distinguished on the basis of their contrasting magnetic character, and are interpreted to represent the Cuyania and Pampia terranes and the Río de la Plata Craton, separated from each other by large-scale discontinuities. In the western part of the study region an additional major discontinuity separates the Chilenia and Cuyania terranes. In the southernmost area studied, WNW-trending structures are predominant, particularly a major NNE-vergent thrust that indicates the truncation of the Cuyania-Pampia suture and is regarded to be related to the possible collision of the Patagonia terrane. An E–W – trending magnetic and gravity anomaly traversing the full extra-Andean Argentine territory, located immediately to the south of 39°S, represents a major structure. The activation of this structure during the Mesozoic gave rise to the Huincul Ridge and marks the interruption of the distinct N-S structures of the Chilenia, Cuyania and Pampia terranes, as well as those of the Río de la Plata Craton, to the north. This E–W represents the suture zone of the Patagonia terrane.  相似文献

Widespread agreement exists on the broad outlines of the concept of sustainable development for developing countries. This calls for a development model capable of meeting basic needs without depleting natural resources at a rate that robs future generations of their use. In this regard, citizen participation is also considered key to legitimise such policy choices. However, there is considerable disagreement over the substance and meaning of the major components of the concept and the relationship between them. This paper argues that positions in policy disputes over the sustainable development of the forest cluster in two distinct approaches: market‐friendly initiatives and grassroots development. Since market economies prevail almost everywhere, the question that is posed concerns the conditions under which the grassroots development approach is included as a significant complement to market‐friendly initiatives. This is a political question, requiring an examination of actors, interests and power resources. The paper thus applies a political economy framework to a paired comparison of Mexico, where grassroots development approaches (community forestry) had notable successes, and Chile, where market‐friendly forest policy crowded out alternatives.  相似文献

The damping reduction factors are used in a few building codes in order to estimate the elastic response spectrum with high damping ratios from its 5%‐damped counterpart. At present, much research regarding this factor has been published. The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the accuracy of five different models of damping reduction factors. In addition, the damping reduction factors adopted in the recent U.S.A. seismic codes are also evaluated. Statistical studies are carried out according to a total of 216 earthquake ground motions recorded on firm sites in California. Considered here are elastic single‐degree‐of‐freedom (SDOF) systems with natural vibrating periods between 0.1 and 6.0 s. Mean ratios and dispersion of approximate to exact maximum elastic displacement demands corresponding to various damping reduction factors are computed as functions of the natural vibrating period and the viscous damping ratio.
