Several long-range explosion seismology experiments have been conducted in the northwestern Pacific basin, where one of the oldest oceanic lithospheres is postulated to exist. The experiments were conducted from 1974 to 1980. Highly sensitive ocean-bottom seismographs which had been developed for longshot experiments were used. The lengths of the profiles ranged from 1000 to 1800 km, and the directions were chosen to provide wide azimuthal coverage. One of the aims of this series of experiments was to test the existence of velocity anisotropy on a large, regional scale.The results show that the oceanic lithosphere has anisotropy wherein the velocity changes by 4–7%. The anisotropy extends from a depth of at least 40 to 140 km beneath the sea bottom; however, the magnitude of the anisotropy may vary with depth. The azimuth of the maximum velocity is 150–160° clockwise from north, and coincides with the “fossil” direction of spreading of the Pacific plate, whereas it differs from the present direction of plate motion by ~ 30°. The azimuth does not seem to depend on depth. In the direction of maximum velocity, the lithosphere is basically two-layered: 8.0–8.2 and 8.6 km s?1. Current seismic design requirements for special concentrically braced frames (SCBFs) in chevron configurations require that the beams supporting the braces be designed to resist the demands resulting from the simultaneous yielding of the tension brace and degraded, post-buckling strength of the compression brace. Recent research, including large-scale experiments and detailed finite-element analyses, has demonstrated that limited beam yielding is not detrimental to chevron braced frame behavior and actually increases the story drift at which the braces fracture. These findings have resulted in new expressions for computing beam demands in chevron SCBFs that reduce the demand in the tension brace to be equal to the expected compressive capacity at buckling of the compression brace. In turn, the resultant force on the beam is reduced as is the required size of the beam. Further study was undertaken to investigate the seismic performance of buildings with SCBFs, including chevron SCBFs with and without yielding beams and X-braced frames. Prototype three- and nine-story braced frames were designed using all three framing systems, that is, chevron, chevron with yielding beams, and X SCBFs, resulting in six building frames. The nonlinear dynamic response was studied for ground motions simulating two different seismic hazard levels. The results were used to characterize the seismic performance in terms of the probability of salient damage states including brace fracture, beam vertical deformation, and collapse. The results demonstrate that the seismic performance of chevron SCBFs with limited beam yielding performs as well as or better than the conventionally designed chevron and X SCBFs.  相似文献

We study analytically a gravitational lens due to a deformed star, which is modelled by using a monopole and a quadrupole moment. Positions of the images are discussed for a source on the principal axis. We present explicit expressions for the lens equation for this gravitational lens as a single real 10th-order algebraic equation. Furthermore, we compute an expression for the caustics as a discriminant for the polynomial. Another simple parametric representation of the caustics is also presented in a more tractable form. A simple expression for the critical curves is obtained to clarify a topological feature of the critical curves; the curves are simply connected if and only if the distortion is sufficiently large.  相似文献

Monthly and daily variations in rainfall over Cherapunjee and Mawsynram on the Meghalaya plateau of northeastern India are analysed. Cherapunjee and Mawsynram are well known as two of the places with the heaviest rainfall in the world. The daily rainfall variation is attributed to the influence of synoptic scale disturbances, with a periodicity of 10–20 days, and the orographic interaction. The annual and monthly highest rainfalls over Cherapunjee during the 31 years from 1973 to 2003 were much larger than mean values.  相似文献

Experiments on salimity tolerance of embryos and larvae of the southern bay scallopArgopecten irradians concentricus Say under controlled temperature of 28°C showed that although the eggs were fertilized and cleaved at salinity 18.1–37.4, they could further develop into normal D-shaped larvae only at salinity 23.4–36.1, while the trochophore larvae could develop into normal D—shaped larvae at salinity 22.1–39.9. For 72 hours, the larvae could tolerate salinity of 18.4–43.9, the salinity favoring growth was 19.8–42.4; the suitable range was 21–36, and the optimum at about 28. Bathymetry, gravity and deep-tow sonar image data are used to define the segmentation of a 400 km long portion of the ultraslow-spreading Knipovich Ridge in the Norwegian-Greenland Sea, Northeast Atlantic Ocean. Discrete volcanic centers marked by large volcanic constructions and accompanying short wavelength mantle Bouguer anomaly (MBA) lows generally resemble those of the Gakkel Ridge and the easternmost Southwest Indian Ridge. These magmatically robust segment centers are regularly spaced about 85-100 km apart along the ridge, and are characterized by accumulated hummocky terrain, high relief, off-axis seamount chains and significant MBA lows. We suggest that these eruptive centers correspond to areas of enhanced magma flux, and that their spacing reflects the geometry of underlying mantle upwelling cells. The large-scale thermal structure of the mantle primarily controls discrete and focused magmatism, and the relatively wide spacing of these segments may reflect cool mantle beneath the ridge. Segment centers along the southern Knipovich Ridge are characterized by lower relief and smaller MBA anomalies than along the northern section of the ridge. This suggests that ridge obliquity is a secondary control on ridge construction on the Knipovich Ridge, as the obliquity changes from 35° to 49° from north to south, respectively, while spreading rate and axial depth remain approximately constant. The increased obliquity may contribute to decreased effective spreading rates, lower upwelling magma velocity and melt formation, and limited horizontal dike propagation near the surface. We also identify small, magmatically weaker segments with low relief, little or no MBA anomaly, and no off-axis expression. We suggest that these segments are either fed by lateral melt migration from adjacent magmatically stronger segments or represent smaller, discrete mantle upwelling centers with short-lived melt supply.  相似文献

T waves (seismic water waves), which were generated by deep-focused earthquakes, have been found by an array of sensitive ocean-bottom seismographic observations depolyed on the western Pacific basin. The points of generation of T waves have been exactly located by use of the accurate velocity of water waves which were known from explosions. The positions obtained are at the bottom of deep-sea trenches; however, the positions are slightly (10–35 km) ocean-side of the trench. T waves have been known to be generated by seismic waves which were transmitted from the focus to the trench bottom along the descending lithosphere. The intensity of the observed T waves implies that the Q value along the descending lithosphere is more than 4000. The positions of T-wave generation are consistent with the 8.2- to 8.6-km/s stratified structure of the oceanic lithosphere. T waves from shallow earthquakes beneath the lower continental slope are also clearly observed by bottom seismography.  相似文献

The relative influences of biotic and abiotic processes on travertine fabrics are still not well understood, despite increasing interest in the last decade to better understand the record of ancient microbial life and sedimentary fabrics in microbial hydrocarbon reservoirs. This study examines travertines at Satono‐yu hot spring in Japan (the temperature of water flowing over the travertine was ca 35°C), to better understand the interaction between depositional, hydrochemical and microbial parameters at different flow settings. Characteristics of the bulk hydrochemistry, mineralogy (exclusively aragonite) and the driving force for precipitation (primarily abiotic CO2 degassing with some photosynthetic microbial contribution) were similar among all of the flow settings. Conversely, the increase in flow velocity suppressed the influence of photosynthesis and enhanced the abiotic precipitation due to the thinner diffusive boundary layer at the travertine surface–water interface. Additionally, the increase in flow velocity changed the microbial composition and decreased the bacterial diversity by reflecting their adhesion efficiency on the travertine substrate. The acidity of the cyanobacterial sheaths controls the aragonite nucleation rate and the resulting calcification, even at significantly high equilibrium CO2 partial pressure (ca 22 to 28 matm), high dissolved inorganic carbon concentration (ca 35 to 38 mmol l?1), and elevated aragonite saturation state (ca 20‐fold to 34‐fold). Therefore, the increase in flow velocity suppresses the microbial influence with respect to the increase in the saturation state, the nucleation site supply and pore space generation. Overall, this results in the predominance of abiotic precipitation under high flow velocities. Consequently, a sparse‐micritic fabric with abundant interlamina porosity forms under lower flow velocity where the microbial influence is effective, while a dense‐sparitic fabric with little inter‐crystalline porosity forms under higher flow velocity where abiotic precipitation prevails. These findings provide an essential base for assessing the formation processes of ancient travertines and comparable deposits from petrological fabrics.  相似文献

Phobos-ellipsoid models made of clay were fragmented by the impact of high-velocity projectiles to examine the idea proposed by P. Thomas, J. Veverka, and T. Duxbury ((1978) Nature273, 282–284) that the grooves on Phobos are the manifestation of fractures produced by the Stickney-forming impact. The fracture lines on the models consist of two sets. One is concentric around the impact site and along E lines, which are defined as the intersecting lines of the ellipsoid surface and a set of spherical surfaces with the center of the spheres at the impact site. The other runs radially from the impact site and along P lines, which are defined as the lines crossing E lines perpendicularly on the ellipsoid surface. Some patterns of the grooves originating radially from the crater Stickney on Phobos are very similar to the P lines. The gridded topography, hummocky groove sections, and smooth topography on Phobos could have been formed by the fracture or associated surface disturbances due to the wave induced by the Stickney-forming impact, because they are distributed along the E lines surrounding the converging point of the P lines. All the models except one showed that the density of the fractures east of the impact site is greater than that of those to the west. Fracture patterns similar to one of the most prominent groove sets, which converge and diminish into the region of about (270°, 0°) were not produced by the impact on the ellipsoid of uniform constituent. These grooves would have been produced by the opening of preexisting cracks by the Stickney-forming impact. Other grooves also seem to be affected by such latent cracks.  相似文献
