The macrobenthic fauna in the large, hypersaline, shallow Keta lagoon in Ghana was sampled at 20 stations in the wet (September
2002) and dry seasons (March 2003) to elucidate the effects of abiotic factors on community patterns. The macrobenthic fauna
was low in density and species diversity and numerically dominated by bivalves and capitellid polychaetes. These organisms
appear able to withstand physical disturbance (when lagoon water levels become extremely low) and osmotic stress (when salinities
are extremely high) and tend to redistribute along environmental gradients. Parallel seasonal differences in several environmental
variables and the macrobenthic fauna indicate a highly dynamic system. Species richness and diversity were higher in the wet
season than the dry season. Salinity, percent clay, pH, and turbidity in that order were the major significant variables structuring
the macrobenthic faunal assemblage in Keta lagoon. The strong effect of seasonal salinity changes on macrobenthic faunal assemblages
may have trophic consequences for higher organisms of commercial importance, such as fishes and shorebirds, in the Keta lagoon. 相似文献

Large-scale ancient landslides of the area of more than 5 km2 and volume exceeding 200 × 106 m3 are characteristic features of the valleys incised in the northern periphery of the Crimean Mountains (Ukraine). The largely
affected area is located in the outermost cuesta range of the Crimean Mountains which consists of rigid Sarmatian limestones
overlying weak Middle Miocene and Upper Palaeogene deposits. A giant landslide arose in the Alma water gap as a reflection
of several coincident preparatory factors such as suitable bedrock stratification, smectite-rich bedrock exposed to swelling
activity, presence of faults parallel to the valley trend, and river capture event which preceded the landslide event. The
occurrence of such ancient megaslides is particularly interesting in the area which is characterized by low precipitation
(<500 mm/year) and weak contemporary seismicity. It probably reflects a more dynamic environment in humid phases of the Holocene;
however, seismic triggering along the Mesozoic suture zone cannot be rejected. Compressional features such as gravitational
folds in the central and distal parts of the landslide, which probably correlate with the whole landslide genesis or its significant
reactivation, arose, according to the radiocarbon dating, during the Holocene climatic optimum in the Atlantic period. The
slope deformation has been relatively quiescent since that time, except minor historic reactivization which took place in
the frontal part of the landslide. We suppose that the studied landslide could be classified as a transitional type of slope

The accurate prediction of runout distances, velocities and the knowledge of flow rheology can reduce the casualties and property
damage produced by debris flows, providing a means to delineate hazard areas, to estimate hazard intensities for input into
risk studies and to provide parameters for the design of protective measures. The application of most of models that describe
the propagation and deposition of debris flow requires detailed topography, rheological and hydrological data that are not
always available for the debris-flow hazard delineation and estimation. In the Cortina d’Ampezzo area, Eastern Dolomites,
Italy, most of the slope instabilities are represented by debris flows; 325 debris-flow prone watersheds have been mapped
in the geomorphological hazard map of this area. We compared the results of simulations of two well-documented debris flows
in the Cortina d’Ampezzo area, carried on with two different single-phase, non-Newtonian models, the one-dimensional DAN-W
and the two-dimensional FLO-2D, to test the possibility to simulate the dynamic behaviour of a debris flow with a model using
a limited range of input parameters. FLO-2D model creates a more accurate representation of the hazard area in terms of flooded
area, but the results in terms of runout distances and deposits thickness are similar to DAN-W results. Using DAN-W, the most
appropriate rheology to describe the debris-flow behaviour is the Voellmy model. When detailed topographical, rheological
and hydrological data are not available, DAN-W, which requires less detailed data, is a valuable tool to predict debris-flow
hazard. Parameters obtained through back-analysis with both models can be applied to predict hazard in other areas characterized

Mean daily consumption rates on Mytilus spp. were compared among juveniles of the non-indigenous Carcinus maenas, juveniles of the indigenous Cancer irroratus, and adults of the indigenous Dyspanopeus sayi between June and August 2005 to assess the relative impact of juvenile C. maenas in field (Benacadie Channel (45°54′ N, 60°53′ E), Bras d’Or Lakes, Nova Scotia, Canada) and laboratory experiments. This study examined: (1) whether consumption rates in a field setting vary among species; (2) the effect of laboratory and field settings on species-specific consumption rates, and whether rates vary between settings for each species; and (3) the effects of temperature and salinity on the consumption rates of these species. In field experiments, there was no significant difference in consumption among C. maenas, C. irroratus, and D. sayi (0.100?±?0.067, 0.450?±?0.189, and 0.800?±?0.423 mussels crab?1 d?1, respectively). However, both C. maenas and C. irroratus consumed two to four times more prey in the laboratory than in the field. D. sayi prey consumption was also greater (although not significant) in the laboratory than in the field. In the laboratory, consumption rate was greater for C. irroratus in salinities of 26 than 17 (2.75 and 1.69–1.81 mussels crab?1 d?1, respectively), and in 17°C than 13°C (1.10–1.21 and 0.56–0.64 mussels crab?1 d?1, respectively) for C. maenas. In all experiments, consumption rates of juvenile C. maenas were lower than or similar to those of the juvenile and adult indigenous species, suggesting that the potential predatory impact of juvenile C. maenas on Mytilus spp. may not be as significant as that of the adults of this non-indigenous species. 相似文献

The 2004 Chuetsu earthquakes of Niigata (Japan) triggered numerous landslides, and the most widespread types of landslides
were highly disrupted, relatively shallow slides and soil (debris) flows. This paper presented a method to evaluate slope
instability using Newmark displacement on a pixel-by-pixel basis in a given area. The proposed method was able to integrate
Newmark displacement modeling and Monte Carlo simulations within geographical information systems. In the modeling, an empirical
attenuation relationship was utilized to calculate Arias intensity over this study area, and the variability of geotechnical
parameters was taken into account to calculate coseismic landslide displacement. Before deriving the displacement from related
inputs, the Monte Carlo simulations ran 1,500 times and generated 1,500 displacement values for each grid cell, and then means
and standard deviations of displacement were calculated and probabilistic distributions can be obtained. Finally, given 10 cm
as a threshold value of displacement, estimated probabilities of displacement exceeding 10 cm were shown as a map of seismic
landslide hazards. The resulting hazard map was classified into four categories from very low to high level. 相似文献

Singular physical or chemical processes may result in anomalous amounts of energy release or mass accumulation that, generally,
are confined to narrow intervals in space or time. Singularity is a property of different types of non-linear natural processes
including cloud formation, rainfall, hurricanes, flooding, landslides, earthquakes, wildfires, and mineralization. The end
products of these non-linear processes can be modeled as fractals or multifractals. Hydrothermal processes in the Earth’s
crust can result in ore deposits characterized by high concentrations of metals with fractal or multifractal properties. Here
we show that the non-linear properties of the end products of singular mineralization processes can be applied for prediction
of undiscovered mineral deposits and for quantitative mineral resource assessment, whether for mineral exploration or for
regional, national and global planning for mineral resource utilization. In addition to the general theory and framework for
the non-linear mineral resources assessment, this paper focuses on several power-law models proposed for characterizing non-linear
properties of mineralization and for geoinformation extraction and integration. The theories, methods, and computer system
discussed in this paper were validated using a case study dealing with hydrothermal Au mineral potential in southern Nova

In this paper, an inverse mapping is used to transform the previously-derived analytical solutions from a local elliptical
coordinate system into a conventional Cartesian coordinate system. This enables a complete set of exact analytical solutions
to be derived rigorously for the pore-fluid velocity, stream function, and excess pore-fluid pressure around and within buried
inclined elliptic inclusions in pore-fluid-saturated porous rocks. To maximize the application range of the derived analytical
solutions, the focal distance of an ellipse is used to represent the size of the ellipse, while the length ratio of the long
axis to the short one is used to represent the geometrical shape of the ellipse. Since the present analytical solutions are
expressed in a conventional Cartesian coordinate system, it is convenient to investigate, both qualitatively and quantitatively,
the distribution patterns of the pore-fluid flow and excess pressure around and within many different families of buried inclined
elliptic inclusions. The major advantage in using the present analytical solution is that they can be conveniently computed
in a global Cartesian coordinate system, which is widely used in many scientific and engineering computations. As an application
example, the present analytical solutions have been used to investigate how the dip angle of an inclined elliptic inclusion
affects the distribution patterns of the pore-fluid flow and excess pore-fluid pressure when the permeability ratio of the

Hydrothermal vent fluids from Middle Valley, a sediment-covered vent field located on the northern Juan de Fuca Ridge, were sampled in July, 2000. Eight different vents with exit temperatures of 186-281 °C were sampled from two areas of venting: the Dead Dog and ODP Mound fields. Fluids from the Dead Dog field are characterized by higher concentrations of ΣNH3 and organic compounds (C1-C4 alkanes, ethene, propene, benzene and toluene) compared with fluids from the ODP Mound field. The ODP Mound fluids, however, are characterized by higher C1/(C2 + C3) and benzene:toluene ratios than those from the Dead Dog field. The aqueous organic compounds in these fluids have been derived from both bacterial processes (methanogenesis in low temperature regions during recharge) as well as from thermogenic processes in higher temperature portions of the subsurface reaction zone. As the sediments undergo hydrothermal alteration, carbon dioxide and hydrocarbons are released to solution as organic matter degrades via a stepwise oxidation process. Compositional and isotopic differences in the aqueous hydrocarbons indicate that maximum subsurface temperatures at the ODP Mound are greater than those at the Dead Dog field. Maximum subsurface temperatures were calculated assuming that thermodynamic equilibrium is attained between alkenes and alkanes, benzene and toluene, and carbon dioxide and methane. The calculated temperatures for alkene-alkane equilibrium are consistent with differences in the dissolved Cl concentrations in fluids from the two fields, and confirm that subsurface temperatures at the ODP Mound are hotter than those at the Dead Dog field. Temperatures calculated assuming benzene-toluene equilibrium and carbon dioxide-methane equilibrium are similar to observed exit temperatures, and do not record the hottest subsurface conditions. The difference in subsurface temperatures estimated using organic geochemical thermometers reflects subsurface cooling processes via mixing of a hot, low salinity vapor with a cooler, seawater salinity fluid. Because of the disparate temperature dependence of alkene-alkane and benzene-toluene equilibria, the mixed fluid records both the high and low temperature equilibrium conditions. These calculations indicate that vapor-rich fluids are presently being formed in the crust beneath the ODP Mound, yet do not reach the surface due to mixing with the lower temperature fluids. 相似文献
