Reconstructions of past environmental changes are critical for understanding the natural variability of Earth's climate system and for providing a context for present and future global change. Radiocarbon-dated lake sediments from Lake CF3, northeastern Baffin Island, Arctic Canada, are used to reconstruct past environmental conditions over the last 11,200 years. Numerous proxies, including chironomid-inferred July air temperatures, diatom-inferred lakewater pH, and sediment organic matter, reveal a pronounced Holocene thermal maximum as much as 5°C warmer than historic summer temperatures from 10,000 to 8500 cal yr B.P. Following rapid cooling 8500 cal yr B.P., Lake CF3 proxies indicate cooling through the late Holocene. At many sites in northeastern Canada, the Holocene thermal maximum occurred later than at Lake CF3; this late onset of Holocene warmth is generally attributed to the impacts of the decaying Laurentide Ice Sheet on early Holocene temperatures in northeastern Canada. However, the lacustrine proxies in Lake CF3 apparently responded to insolation-driven warmth, despite the proximity of Lake CF3 to the Laurentide Ice Sheet and its meltwater. The magnitude and timing of the Holocene thermal maximum at Lake CF3 indicate that temperatures and environmental conditions at this site are highly sensitive to changes in radiative forcing.  相似文献

Indications of intense deformation in the Anyui-Chukotka Fold System and the South Anyui Suture Zone have been noted for a long time [3, 5, 19, 36]. The character and age of the deformation, however, remain a matter of debate. Using structural paragenetic and deformational kinematic analyses, we establish three deformation stages in the Anyui-Chukotka Fold System. The structural assembly comprising open folds and NW-trending axial-plane cleavage was formed during the stage of regional compression (D1) related to the collision of the Chukotka-Arctic Alaska microcontinent with Eurasia. The assembly of the second stage in the Alyarmaut Rise is distinguished by isoclinal folds F2, gently dipping metamorphic schistosity, and pervasive cleavage in combination with folded quartz veins and lenses. Planar structural elements of the second stage are disturbed by low-amplitude normal and reverse faults and kink folds of stage D3. The U-Pb (SHRIMP-RG) and 40/39Ar methods were used for determination of the isotopic age of the deformations. The Aptian-Albian zircon age (117–108 Ma) has been established for six postcollision granitic plutons of the Anyui-Chukotka Fold System and the South Anyui Suture. Syncollision deformation completed 125–117 Ma ago. The extensional tectonic stage D2 accompanied by emplacement of the Lyupveem pluton occurred 120–105 Ma ago. The 40/39Ar age of the biotite from the metamorphic rocks marks the age of syndeformation metamorphism (109–103 Ma). The lower limit of brittle failure and deformation D3 is estimated at 105 Ma.  相似文献

Hafnium, U, Th, and REE content of zircons from the Spirit Mountain batholith in southern Nevada correlate with calculated temperatures from the Ti-in-zircon thermometer to support field and petrologic evidence of rejuvenation of crystal mush and melt extraction events during the 2-million year accumulation of the granitoid batholith. Marked variation in zircon composition from sample to sample, from grain to grain within individual samples, and from zone to zone within individual grains documents in detail a history of fluctuating conditions with repeated episodes of replenishment, reheating, crystal mush rejuvenation, fractional crystallization, and melt segregation. The zircons exhibit compositional and thermal variability indicative of variations in host melt composition due to (1) melt rejuvenation, mixing, and fractionation (2) coeval growth of other REE-rich accessory minerals, and possibly (3) fluctuation in fO2.  相似文献

A suite of environmental proxies in annually laminated sediments from Hvítárvatn, a proglacial lake in the central highlands of Iceland, are used to reconstruct regional climate variability and glacial activity for the past 3000 years. Sedimentological analysis is supported by tephrostratigraphy to confirm the continuous, annual nature of the laminae, and a master varve chronology places proxies from multiple lake cores in a secure geochronology. Varve thickness is controlled by the rate of glacial erosion and efficiency of subglacial discharge from the adjacent Langjökull ice cap. The continuous presence of glacially derived clastic varves in the sediment fill confirms that the ice cap has occupied the lake catchment for the duration of the record. Varve thickness, varve thickness variance, ice-rafted debris, total organic carbon (mass flux and bulk concentration), and C:N of sedimentary organic matter, reveal a dynamic late Holocene climate with abrupt and large-scale changes in ice-cap size and landscape stability. A first-order trend toward cooler summers and ice-cap expansion is punctuated by notable periods of rapid ice cap growth and/or landscape instability at ca 1000 BC, 600 BC, 550 AD and 1250 AD. The largest perturbation began ca 1250 AD, signaling the onset of the Little Ice Age and the termination of three centuries of relative warmth during Medieval times. Consistent deposition of ice-rafted debris in Hvítárvatn is restricted to the last 250 years, demonstrating that Langjökull only advanced into Hvítárvatn during the coldest centuries of the Little Ice Age, beginning in the mid eighteenth century. This advance represents the glacial maximum for at least the last 3 ka, and likely since regional deglaciation 10 ka. The multi-centennial response of biological proxies to the Hekla 3 tephra deposition illustrates the significant impact of large explosive eruptions on local environments, and catchment sensitivity to perturbations.  相似文献

Photochemical mineralization of dissolved organic matter (DOM) plays an important role in the cycling of carbon in estuarine systems. A key to modeling this process is knowledge of apparent quantum yields (AQYs) for the photochemical products. Here we determined spectral AQYs for carbon dioxide (CO2) and carbon monoxide (CO), the main products of DOM photomineralization, along the main axis of the Delaware Estuary. Apparent quantum yields for CO2 photoproduction were determined shipboard using a multi-spectral irradiation system. Carbon monoxide AQYs were determined in stored samples by employing a narrow band spectral irradiation system. A single AQY spectrum described carbon dioxide photochemical production within the estuary whereas CO AQY spectra varied with salinity, suggesting different precursors and mechanisms for the production of these two species. CO2 AQYs were used along with shipboard measurements of DOM absorbance and solar irradiance to calculate photoproduction rates. Calculated CO2 photoproduction rates agreed with directly measured rates (2 to 4 μM CO2 d? 1) within experimental error, supporting the further development and use of AQYs to calculate regional-scale photochemical fluxes.  相似文献

Basal rocks of the Upper Carboniferous to Lower Permian Pagoda Formation at Mount Butters provide an unusual view of periglacial conditions in the central Transantarctic Mountains region prior to the initial advance of the Gondwanide ice sheet. These rocks were deposited on a high relief unconformity that developed on granite. Deposition within relief on the unconformity, possibly in the lee of a granite buttress, protected the rocks from erosion during subsequent overriding by the ice sheet. The succession reflects deposition in a glacial‐fed to ice‐contact lake that contained a freshwater crustacean fauna. Centimetre‐ to decimetre‐scale basal layers include breccia and coarse‐grained sandstone. The occurrence of breccia resting on weathered granite suggests sedimentation as scree and as mass flow deposits. Overlying decimetre‐to metre‐scale stratified diamictites interbedded with metre‐scale, coarsening‐upward successions of siltstone to cross‐laminated sandstone suggest lacustrine deposition by suspension settling, rain out of ice‐rafted debris, and deltaic progradation. Thin zones with abundant conchostracans and/or with prolific trace fossils, in addition to less common remains of other crustaceans, attest to the presence of a low diversity benthic fauna. Conchostracans are concentrated in a series of thin beds that reflect moderately lengthy, perhaps seasonal, periods of free‐flowing water. Patchy vertical and lateral distribution of intense bioturbation and profuse trace fossils probably reflect repeated colonization events during times of favourable environmental conditions. Massive diamictite overlies the basal rocks and indicates that the ice‐marginal lake was subsequently overridden by the late Palaeozoic ice sheet. Occurrences of lodgement till, glacitectonite and deformation till suggest deposition from temperate or warm‐based ice, whereas underlying lacustrine and deltaic deposits, along with a crustacean and trace fossil fauna, suggest temperate periglacial conditions. Previous studies have stressed that upper Palaeozoic glacigenic deposits in Antarctica, and in Gondwanaland, record deglaciation events. In contrast, rocks at Mt. Butters provide an unusual glimpse into an ice‐margin lake and its fauna just prior to ice sheet advance.  相似文献

Stratigraphic, geomorphic, and paleoecological data were collected from upland watersheds in the Great Basin of central Nevada to assess the relationships between late Holocene climate change, hillslope processes and landforms, and modern channel dynamics. These data indicate that a shift to drier, warmer climatic conditions from approximately 2500 to 1300 YPB led to a complex set of geomorphic responses. The initial response was massive hillslope erosion and the simultaneous aggradation of both side-valley alluvial fans and the axial valley system. The final response was fan stabilization and axial channel incision as fine-grained sediments were winnowed from the hillslope sediment reservoirs, and sediment yield and runoff processes were altered. The primary geomorphic response to disturbance for approximately the past 1900 years has been channel entrenchment, suggesting that the evolutionary history of hillslopes has produced watersheds that are prone to incision. The magnitude of the most recent phase of channel entrenchment varies along the valley floor as a function of geomorphic position relative to side-valley alluvial fans. Radial fan profiles suggest that during fan building, fan deposits temporarily blocked the flow of sediment down the main stem of the valley, commonly creating a stepped longitudinal valley profile. Stream reaches located immediately upvalley of these fans are characterized by low gradients and alternating episodes of erosion and deposition. In contrast, reaches coincident with or immediately downstream of the fans exhibit higher gradients and limited valley floor deposition. Thus, modern channel dynamics and associated riparian ecosystems are strongly influenced by landforms created by depositional events that occurred approximately 2000 years ago.  相似文献

Previous models of degassing, cooling and compaction of rhyolitic ash flow deposits are combined in a single computational model that runs on a personal computer. The model applies to a broader range of initial and boundary conditions than Riehle's earlier model, which did not integrate heat and mass flux with compaction and which for compound units was limited to two deposits. Model temperatures and gas pressures compare well with simple measured examples. The results indicate that degassing of volatiles present at deposition occurs within days to a few weeks. Compaction occurs for weeks to two to three years unless halted by devitrification; near-emplacement temperatures can persist for tens of years in the interiors of thick deposits. Even modest rainfall significantly chills the upper parts of ash deposits, but compaction in simple cooling units ends before chilling by rainwater influences cooling of the interior of the sheet. Rainfall does, however, affect compaction at the boundaries of deposits in compound cooling units, because the influx of heat from the overlying unit is inadequate to overcome heat previously lost to vaporization of water. Three density profiles from the Matahina Ignimbrite, a compound cooling unit, are fairly well reproduced by the model despite complexities arising from numerous cooling breaks. Uncertainties in attempts to correlate in detail among the profiles may be the result of the non-uniform distribution of individual deposits. Regardless, it is inferred that model compaction is approximately valid. Thus the model should be of use in reconstructing the emplacement history of compound ash deposits, for inferring the depositional environments of ancient deposits and for assessing how long deposits of modern ash flows are capable of generating phreatic eruptions or secondary ash flows.  相似文献

Middle to Late Jurassic plutonic rocks in the central Mojave Desert represent the continuation of the Sierran arc south of the Garlock fault. Rock types range from calc-alkaline gabbro to quartz monzonite. Chemical and isotopic data indicate that petrologic diversity is attributable to mixing of crustal components with mantle melts. Evidence for magma mixing is scarce in most plutons, but emplacement and injection of plutons into preexisting wallrocks (e.g. pendants of metasedimentary rocks) suggests that assimilation may be locally important. Field and petrographic evidence and major and trace element data indicate that the gabbros do not represent pure liquids but are, at least partly, cumulates. The cumulate nature of the gabbros coupled with field evidence for open-system contamination means that trace element contents of gabbros cannot be used to fingerprint the Jurassic mantle source, nor can isotopic data be unequivocally interpreted to reflect the isotopic composition of the mantle. Correlation of Sr and Nd isotropic composition with bulk composition allows some constraints to be placed on the mantle isotopic signature. Gabbros and mafic inclusions from localities north of Barstow, CA have the most depleted mantle-like isotopic signatures (Sr ( i )≈0.705 and ɛNd (t)=≈0 to +1). However, these rocks have likely seen some contamination as well, so the mantle source probably has an even more depleted character. Gabbros with the lowest Sr( i ) and highest ɛNd (t) are also characterized by the highest 207Pb/204Pb and 206Pb/204Pb in the entire data set. This may be a feature of the mantle component in the Jurassic arc indicative of minor source contamination with subducted sediment as has been observed in modern continental arcs. Locally exposed Precambrian basement and metasedimentary rocks have appropriate Sr, Nd and Pb isotopic signatures for the crustal end members and are possible contaminants. Incorporation of these components through combined anatexis and assimilation can explain the observed spread in isotopic composition. Evidence for a depleted mantle component in these gabbros contrasts with the enriched subcontinental mantle component in Jurassic arc plutons further to the east and suggests there may have been a major mantle lithosphere boundary between the two areas as far back as the Late Jurassic. Crustal boundaries and isotopic provinces defined on the basis of initial isotopic composition (Sr( i )=0.706 isopleth) are difficult to delineate because of the correlation of bulk composition with Sr and Nd isotopic composition and because values may differ depending on the age of the rocks sampled within a given area. Data from plutons intruded into rocks known or inferred to be Precambrian are, however, shifted dramatically (highest Sr( i ) and lowest ɛNd(t)) toward Precambrian values. The least isotopically evolved rocks (lowest Sr( i ) and highest ɛNd(t)) occur within the eugeoclinal belt of the Mojave Desert. This zone has been previously identified as a Precambrian rift zone but more likely represents a zone where mantle magmas have been intruded into isotopically similar crustal rocks of the eugeocline with minor input from old Precambrian crust. The geology of Lesotho is relatively simple: the overall structure being that of a large shallow basin of Karroo sediments and volcanics. The rocks analysed in this study were collected in December 1966. The principal objectives of the study were (a) to date the inception of Karroo volcanism and (b) to arrive at an estimate of the time-span represented by the lava section along the Bushman’s Pass road east of Maseru. The date at which volcanism began in Lesotho is important because of recent discoveries of early mammalian fossils in underlying beds; in relation to the Phanerozoic Time-Scale and to the K-Ar age pattern found in the Karroo dolerites of South Africa byMcDougall (1963). Cox andHornung (1966) have suggested that the fractionation stage reached by Karroo magmas may depend upon either the height of the magma column or the time that elapsed since the beginning of the volcanic episode. An estimate of the time-span of volcanism along the Bushman’s Pass section is of interest because of the extensive palaeomagnetic work done on these rocks at the Bernard Price Institute of Geophysical Research in Johannesburg. The paper contains the results of triplicate conventional total degassing whole rock K-Ar age determinations on 8 Drakensberg lavas and on 8 Karroo dolerite sills and dykes. The analysed rocks are described petrographically and the age pattern obtained from them is discussed in relation to the age and petrological information available from other Karroo igneous rocks. It is concluded that Karroo volcanism began in Lesotho around 187 m.y. and that « Karroo » intrusive activity continued intermittently until at least 155 m.y. ago. Some possible geological and petrological implications of these conclusions are outlined.  相似文献
