This study explored the impacts of sustained heavy grazing in six vegetation types across an altitudinal and rainfall gradient in the Kamiesberg mountain range in Namaqualand. The study was carried out across the fence separating the Leliefontein communal area and surrounding privately owned farms. The communal area has been stocked over decades at approximately twice the government recommended stocking rate, while adjacent privately owned farms have generally adhered to recommended rates. Plant community data were collected from 66, 0.1 ha modified Whittaker plots and analysed for diversity and compositional changes. Consideration of community-wide responses through NMDS ordination showed that heavy grazing did not result in the dominance of a few wide-spread, weedy species in communal areas. Species richness at the 0.1 ha scale was also not affected by different land use practices. However, there was a significant compositional shift away from large woody and succulent shrubs, and an associated increase in dwarf shrubs and herbaceous perennial plants on the communal areas. This shift was only evident on the sandy lowland habitats, while a reduction in perennial grass was recorded in the rocky upland habitats on the communal areas. Compositional shifts towards smaller and more ephemeral species in the communal area are indicative of a system more closely dependent on rainfall. Simulation of SH- and P-SV-wave propagation in fault zones 总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Seismic fault-zone (FZ) trapped waves provide a potentially high-resolution means for investigating FZ and earthquake properties. Seismic waves emitted within and travelling along low-velocity FZ layers may propagate many kilometres within the low-velocity structure associated with the fault. Waveform observation of FZ trapped waves can be modelled in terms of FZ layer velocities, thicknesses and attenuation coefficients. This can greatly improve the resolution of imaged FZ structure and microearthquake locations. At present, broad-band theoretical seismograms are restricted to plane-parallel layers of uniform properties. However, it is not clear how realistic these models are compared with actual fault structures which could, for example, flare outwards near the surface, have irregular boundaries, interior heterogeneities, etc. To address these interpretational uncertainties, we perform finite-difference simulations for irregular FZ geometries and non-uniform material properties within the layers. The accuracy of the numerical solutions are verified by comparison with the analytical solution of Ben-Zion & Aki (1990) for plane-parallel structures. Our main findings are: (1) FZs can widen at the ctustal surface only slightly modifying the trapped waves; (2) velocity variations with depth destroy trapped wave propagation at all wavelengths; (3) FZ trapped waves can be obscured by the presence of a low-velocity surface layer; (4) models with short-scale random structures suggest that trapped waves average out irregular FZ geometries, and hence can be effectively modelled by average-property plane-layered media for the observed range of wavelengths. 相似文献

The Mattaponi River is part of the York River estuary in Chesapeake Bay. Our objective was to identify the organic matter (OM) sources fueling the lower food web in the tidal freshwater and oligohaline portions of the Mattaponi using the stable isotopes of carbon (C) and nitrogen (N). Over 3 years (2002–2004), we measured zooplankton densities and C and N stable isotope ratios during the spring zooplankton bloom. The river was characterized by a May–June zooplankton bloom numerically dominated by the calanoid copepod Eurytemora affinis and cladocera Bosmina freyi. Cluster analysis of the stable isotope data identified four distinct signatures within the lower food web: freshwater riverine, brackish water, benthic, and terrestrial. The stable isotope signatures of pelagic zooplankton, including E. affinis and B. freyi, were consistent with reliance on a mix of autochthonous and allochthonous OM, including OM derived from vascular plants and humic-rich sediments, whereas macroinvertebrates consistently utilized allochthonous OM. Based on a dual-isotope mixing model, reliance on autochthonous OM by pelagic zooplankton ranged from 20% to 95% of production, declining exponentially with increasing river discharge. The results imply that discharge plays an important role in regulating the energy sources utilized by pelagic zooplankton in the upper estuary. We hypothesize that this is so because during high discharge, particulate organic C loading to the upper estuary increased and phytoplankton biomass decreased, thereby decreasing phytoplankton availability to the food web. 相似文献

A simple model of the motion of charged particles in the closed field line magnetic field for L ? 4·5 is used together with Injun 3 measurements of 40 keV precipitated electrons made in the northern hemisphere to estimate theoretically the extent of electron precipitation, the energy input and the 3914 Å airglow in the South Atlantic geomagnetic anomaly. Using average values of the northern hemisphere precipitated electron flux, two regions of significantly enhanced electron precipitation are found in the southern hemisphere. One occurs in the region 10–20°E and 40–50°S, with L ≈ 2, and the second near 30°E and 65°S, with L ≈ 4.5. Approximately 0.04 erg cm?2 sec?1 are deposited by 40 keV electrons for 50 per cent of the time in the first region and half that amount in the second. This increases to ~0·1 and 0·02 erg cm?2 sec?1 respectively for 15 per cent of the time for near sunspot minimum conditions. The results show a gradual increase in precipitation on the western side of the anomaly followed by a rapid increase and sudden cut-off in precipitation within a few degrees west of minimum B. The flux on L = 2 reaches a “spike” in the southern hemisphere ~f35 times greater than the average flux precipitated on L = 2 in the northern hemisphere. Neanthes arenaceodentata were exposed to 292, 146, 92 and 56 μg litre−1 Cu (measured) and control seawater after a 27-day pre-exposure to a sublethal concentration of Cu (10, 16 and 28 μg litre−1 and control) to determine if the worms increased their tolerance to Cu after the pre-treatment. The worms pre-exposed to 28 μg litre−1 Cu were significantly more resistant to Cu toxicity than control and 10 and 16 μg litre−1 Cu pre-exposed worms. For example, the time to 50 % mortality at 92 μg litre−1 Cu was 18 and 11 days for worms pre-exposed to 28 μg litre−1 Cu and control conditions, respectively. The net rate of Cu uptake during the toxicity test was lower for worms pre-exposed to 28 μg litre−1 Cu than for the control and 10 and 16 μg litre−1 Cu pre-exposed worms. Oil spill response in the US is divided among several jurisdictions due to separate and overlapping legislative and regulatory authority. In Rhode Island, data concerning oil spill incidents are kept by two agencies of the federal government and by one agency of the state government. Narragansett Bay and its tributaries are geographically in three jurisdictions; however, because of a tradition of good interagency cooperation, there were very few duplications in spill response. Because each agency has differing expertise and equipment, the types of spill incidents reported by each, if considered separately, present an entirely different picture of the nature of oil spills in this region. Assessment of oil spills as a source of pollution to coastal waters requires examination of all data, not only that from one agency. The 1875-1840-Ma Great Bear magmatic zone is a 100-km wide by at least 900-km-long belt of predominantly subgreenschist facies volcanic and plutonic rocks that unconformably overlie and intrude an older sialic basement complex. The basement complex comprises older arc and back-arc rocks metamorphosed and deformed during the Calderian orogeny, 5–15 Ma before the onset of Great Bear magmatism. The Great Bear magmatic zone contains the products of two magmatic episodes, separated temporally by an oblique folding event caused by dextral transpression of the zone: (1) a 1875-1860-Ma pre-folding suite of mainly calc-alkaline rocks ranging continuously in composition from basalt to rhyolite, cut by allied biotite-hornblende-bearing epizonal plutons; and (2) a 1.85-1.84-Ga post-folding suite of discordant, epizonal, biotite syenogranitic plutons, associated dikes, and hornblende-diorites, quartz diorites, and monzodiorites. The pre-folding suite of volcanic and plutonic rocks is interpreted as a continental magmatic arc generated by eastward subduction of oceanic lithosphere. Cessation of arc magmatism and subsequent dextral transpression may have resulted from ridge subduction and resultant change in relative plate motion. Increased heat flux due to ridge subduction coupled with crustal thickening during transpression may have caused crustal melting as evidenced by the late syenogranite suite. Final closure of the western ocean by collision with a substantial continental fragment, now forming the neoautochthonous basement of the northern Canadian Cordillera, is manifested by a major swarm of transcurrent faults found throughout the Great Bear zone and the Wopmay orogen.Although there is probably no single evolutionary template for magmatism at convergent plate margins, the main Andean phase of magmatism, exemplified by the pre-folding Great Bear magmatic suite, evolves as larger quantities of subduction-related mafic magma rise into and heat the crust. This results in magmas that are more homogeneous, siliceous, and explosive with time, ultimately leading to overturn and fractionation of the continental crust. 相似文献
