Summary. An empirical equation of state, assuming mineralogical equilibrium, is developed for the top 700 km of the mantle. Assuming a uniform viscosity, this equation of state is used to show that the stresses due to the changes in phase induced in a descending lithospheric plate in a subduction zone are an order of magnitude larger than those due to the negative buoyancy of the slab in the asthenosphere. The stresses predicted are well within the power law creep region for likely mantle materials and so the effective viscosity will vary within the slab. Consequently the stresses will be smaller than those of 7.0 × 108N/m2 obtained here using uniform viscosities. These stresses are relatively compressional near the sides of the slab and tensional in the centre.  相似文献

A coupled neutral-ionic photochemical model has been used to interpret the ionic composition of the Venusian dayside ionosphere measured by the orbiter retarding potential analyser (ORPA) experiment on board the NASA Pioneer-Venus orbiter spacecraft. The electron and ion temperatures also measured by the ORPA are used for calculating the plasma-diffusion coefficients and scale heights for ions. The neutral temperature profiles and the densities of neutral constituents, particularly CO2 and O, play key roles in the determination of the height profiles of the ionic constituents. All these quantities vary substantially in the Venusian thermosphere near the terminator; the models presented are representatives of the solar zenith angle ~65°. The predicted O2+ densities below ~200km agree particularly well with observations by the ORPA, but the model values are significantly less than those measured by the orbiter ion mass spectrometer (OIMS). Models predict much smaller densities than observed values for all molecular ions above ~200km. The reason for the turn-up trend of the concentration gradient of molecular ions observed at these heights by both ORPA and OIMS is unknown. One of the models can predict O+ ion densities above ~200km compatible with observations, if an effective vertical escape flux (φ108cm?2sec?1) is assumed at the ionopause. The neutral air density required to explain the observed ion composition is about 1.4 times larger than the values measured by the orbiter neutral mass spectrometer (ONMS).  相似文献

Sedimentary rocks exposed in the Meridiani Planum region of Mars record aqueous and eolian deposition in ancient dune and interdune playa-like environments that were arid, acidic, and oxidizing. On Earth, microbial populations have repeatedly adapted to low pH and both episodic and chronic water limitation, suggesting that, to a first approximation, the Meridiani plain may have been habitable during at least part of the interval when deposition and early diagenesis took place. On the other hand, the environmental conditions inferred for Meridiani deposition would have posed a challenge for prebiotic chemical reactions thought to have played a role in the origin of life on Earth. Orbital observations suggest that the combination of sulfate minerals and hematite found in Meridiani rocks may be unusual on the martian surface; however, there is reason to believe that acidity, aridity, and oxidizing conditions were broadly distributed on ancient Mars. When these conditions were established and how much environmental heterogeneity existed on early Mars remain to be determined. Because sulfates and iron oxides can preserve detailed geochemical records of environmental history as well as chemical, textural and microfossil signatures of biological activity, Meridiani Planum is an attractive candidate for Mars sample return.  相似文献

The distribution, variability and chemical behaviour of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) was investigated over 212 years in the Severn Estuary and Bristol Channel, UK. The concentrations of riverine DOC (3.1–7.8 mg C l?1) covaried with river flow and were invariably conservative in this turbid slowly flushing (~200 days) estuary, indicating that any microbial degradation, chemical flocculation or adsorption processes do not affect the flux of riverine DOC through the estuary. The DOC inputs from the Severn (1.7–2.7 × 1010 g Cyr?1) and other rivers (2.6–3.4 × 1010 g Cyr?1) are the principal sources of DOC in the estuary and correspond to an export of 0.7–1.1% of the terrestrial productivity from the river catchment to the ocean. This export rate is in accord with recent predictions derived from global compilations of organic inputs from rivers and would imply that the global flux of riverine DOC could be as high as 7.8 × 1014 g Cyr?1 which is 5 times greater than some previous estimates.The geochemical significance of a conservative delivery of riverine DOC to the ocean is that irrespective of which flux estimate is considered, such river inputs would make a significant contribution (~SO%) to oceanic DOC, and that the steady-state oceanic DOC flux would have to be significantly greater than present estimates (2.9 × 1014 g Cyr?1) which are based on a mean radio carbon age of 3400 yr.An alternative, more realistic DOC flux model, which assumes a polydisperse age distribution about the mean age, is shown to yield the higher oceanic DOC fluxes required. Flocculation and adsorption processes would remove less than 10% and 0.2% respectively of riverine DOC in estuaries.  相似文献

The question of the magnitude and behaviour of the electromagnetic contribution to the mass of an elementary charged particle is explored. It is shown that, if the “cut-off” of relativistic quantum electrodynamics is taken as an approximation to the physical process embodied in the postulates: I. That the bare charge of an elementary particle may only emit and absorb virtual photons having energies that are integral multiples of some fundamental energy, and II. that the observed charge of an elementary particle is a constant independent of its “radius”, the electromagnetic mass of such a particle is always finite, even when the radius of the particle becomes zero. Alternative postulates that will resolve the cut-off dilemma are briefly discussed. It is noted that the “MACHianess” of electromagnetic mass (in terms of PAULI'S criterion for “MACHianess”) depends on the detailed structure of postulate II, and that extant experimental results do not permit one, at present, to decide the issue with certainty.  相似文献
