Estimating nitrogen transformation rates in aquatic ecosystems by isotope dilution techniques is simplified by directly measuring nitrogen isotopic ratios for NH4+ in the water using high performance cation exchange liquid chromatography (HPLC). Modifications of HPLC conditions and implementation of a median-area method for retention time determination improved and linearized a previously reported sigmoid relationship between the retention time shift (RTshift) of the NH4+ peak and the ratio of [15NH4+]: [Total NH4+] in seawater fortified with 15NH4+. Increasing the temperature of the HPLC column from 47 to 85 °C increased mobile phase buffer flow rate relative to column back pressure, decreased the retention time for NH4+, and allowed the buffer pH to be optimized relative to the pK of NH4+. The use of median-area rather than maximum-height to define the retention time of NH4+ further improved the linearity (r > 0.995) of the relationship between the ratio [15NH4+]: [Total NH4+] and RTshift over the range of isotope ratios. Reduction of NO3− to NH4+ by adding zinc dust to acidified (pH 2) seawater or lakewater samples, followed by pH neutralization, and subsequent analysis of NH4+ isotope ratios by HPLC, extended application of the method to isotope dilution experiments with NO3−. Advantages of this direct-injection method over mass-measurement approaches traditionally used for isotope dilution experiments include small sample size and minimal sample preparation. 相似文献

Near-surface wind velocities were measured on an array of anchored spar buoys in the East China Sea in February 1975 as a part of the Japanese AMTEX '75 (Air Mass Transformation Experiment), a subprogram of GARP. These data were used to determine the effects of atmospheric convection associated with mesoscale convective cells (MCC) on near-surface winds over the ocean. This study provides a regional framework within which studies of ore-related dolomite and dolomite cements may be placed. Fluid inclusion data indicate the presence of three distinct fluids following early dolomitization: 1) a ubiquitous low-temperature, higher salinity fluid found in saddle dolomite; 2) a low-temperature, lower salinity fluid limited to sub-Waulsortian and Waulsortian carbonates; and 3) a higher temperature, lower salinity fluid found in Waulsortian and supra-Waulsortian rocks. Similar fluids have been reported in ore-associated minerals and postmineralization dolomite (Type 1) and in ore-stage carbonates and sphalerite (Types 2 and 3). The halogen geochemistry of included fluids indicates genesis from evaporated seawater. Type 1 fluids are enriched in chloride relative to bromide, reflecting a component of salinity derived via dissolution of halite or from dehydration of seawater. These data suggest that dolomitization and mineralization of Mississippian rocks in the Midlands requires both regionally extensive and localized fluid flow. 相似文献

Two active quarries are mining stone from the Silurian dolomite aquifer in Waukesha County in southeastern Wisconsin. The village in which the quarries are located uses local zoning to control the depth of mining and to institute a long-term water level monitoring program and well guarantee/one with the quarry owners. Water levels dropped as much as 40 feet in at least 24 residential wells surrounding the quarries over a period of a few hours to days. The rapid decline in head was caused by a single boring drilled lo a depth of 75 feel he low the floor of one quarry. The borehole penetrated a localized fracture zone under confined artesian head. Water levels recovered to previous static levels within nine days after grouting the borehole. The rapid drawdown event demonstrates the potential impact of mining in fractured aquifers. The apparent complete recovery of the aquifer demonstrates that quick response can sometimes restore an aquifer. However, the potential for blasting into a similar zone illustrates the need for a well-thought-out aquifer monitoring program and emergency response plan. The experience of the village is a good example of managing conflicting uses of a finite resource and collecting baseline data needed to make informed decisions. 相似文献

The response of 12 fluvial fans near Sydney, Australia to a large storm between 2 and 4 February 1990 was determined by repeating previously surveyed longitudinal profiles and by undertaking detailed field observations of erosion and deposition. Peak rainfall intensities occurred on 3 and 4 February when between 173 and 193·8 mm were recorded. Return periods for 24 h duration peak rainfall ranged between 5·7 and 11·0 years on the annual maximum series at six stations within the study area and return periods for 48 h peak rainfall ranged between 13·5 and 29·4 years. Of the 12 fans, seven were trenched and five untrenched. The most significant geomorphic effects of the storm were recorded on the proximal region of the fans. However, fan response was highly variable, with one fan exhibiting no detectable change, three fans localized deposition, two fans spatially disjunct erosion and deposition, two fans channel avulsions, and seven fans fanhead trench reworking. Some fans exhibited more than one type of response. A four-stage, tentative cyclical model of fanhead development was constructed from the field data. Stage 1 refers to the episodic aggradation of the fanhead by localized deposition, spatially disjunct erosion and deposition and/or channel avulsions. Stage 2 represents the initiation of a fanhead trench when progressive aggradation locally exceeds a threshold slope leading to localized erosion. This erosion initially creates one or more discontinuous flow-aligned scour pools. Over time, the scour pools widen, deepen and extend both up- and downfan. Stage 3 refers to the coalescence of discontinuous scour pools into a continuous trench by the removal of intervening log and boulder steps. Stage 4 represents the backfilling phase of the trench once it has been overwidened and/or slope reduced. Aggradation then continues as for stage one. 相似文献

Abstract— An impressive daylight fireball was observed from Spain, Portugal, and the south of France at 16h46m45s UTC on January 4, 2004. The meteoroid penetrated into the atmosphere, generating shock waves that reached the ground and produced audible booms. The associated airwave was recorded at a seismic station located 90 km north of the fireball trajectory in Spain, and at an infrasound station in France located 750 km north‐east of the fireball. The absolute magnitude of the bolide has been determined to be ?18 ± 1 from a casual video record. The energy released in the atmosphere determined from photometric, seismic, and infrasound data was about 0.02 kilotons (kt). A massive fragmentation occurred at a height of 28 ± 0.2 km, resulting in a meteorite strewn field of 20 × 6 km. The first meteorite specimen was found on January 11, 2004, near the village of Villalbeto de la Peña, in northern Palencia (Spain). To date, about 4.6 kg of meteorite mass have been recovered during several recovery campaigns. The meteorite is a moderately shocked (S4) L6 ordinary chondrite with a cosmic‐ray‐exposure age of 48 ± 5 Ma. Radioisotope analysis shows that the original body had a mass of 760 ± 150 kg, which is in agreement with the estimated mass obtained from photometric and seismic measurements. 相似文献

The effect of sonication pretreatment condition on Eucheuma cottonii and Gelidium amansii seaweed towards agar extraction wae studied.Four parameters were changed during sonication to investigate the effects on agar yield and quality.These parameters include the time interval,concentration ratio,frequency,and intensity.The highest amount of agar extracted from Eucheuma cottonii species could be obtained from the time interval of 30min,seaweed weight to solvent volume ratio of 1:20,the frequency of 35Hz,and the sonication power intensity of 30%.For Gelidium amansii species,the best agar yield also could be obtained from the time interval of 30 min,1:20 of seaweed weight to water volume ratio,the frequency of 35Hz,and power intensity of 30%.From the experiment,sonication pretreatment signifi cantly influenced the yield and properties of extracted agar.The sonication with autoclaved seaweed produced agar containing less sulfate content,which is an excellent chemical property for gel electrophoresis applications.The gelstrength of sonication with autoclaving for both seaweeds,Eucheuma and Gelidium species was the highest among those by sonication with direct heating,which proved that sonication pretreatment with autoclaving could enhance the physical properties of the agar. 相似文献

Abstract Surface sediment samples (60 μm‐2 mm, and < 60 μm fractions) from the Waiwhetu Stream, Lower Hutt City, New Zealand, were leached with dilute HCl to remove the mobile heavy‐metal fraction. Cd, Cr, Cu, Pb, Zn, Al, Fe, and Mn analyses of the leachates show that sediments of the upper reaches area of the stream are generally uncontaminated. In contrast, sediments in the lower reaches area are highly contaminated, despite clean‐up measures in the late 1970s. Lead and Zn are the most significantly enriched metals with concentrations over 1000 mg kg?1 adjacent to some drains. In the polluted zone, metals originate from either upward remobilisation from underlying sediment (contaminated in the early 1960s and 70s) or more recent industrial spillages. Similar trends exhibited by Cd, Cu, Cr, Zn, Pb, and Al indicate that a proportion of the metal enrichment downstream probably results from a naturally higher clay content of sediments near the mouth of the stream. Fe and Mn show reverse trends to the other metals, indicating that a high proportion of these two metals occurs in substrate different to that of the other metals. The orange brick‐coloured sediments of the upper reaches of the stream indicate oxides upstream; the black sediments in the lower reaches indicate sulphides downstream. 相似文献

The Chandeleur Islands lie on the eastern side of the modern Mississippi River delta plain, near the edge of the St. Bernard
Delta complex. Since abandonment approximately 2,000 years b.p., this delta complex has undergone subsidence and ravinement as the shoreline has transgressed across it. High-resolution
seismic-reflection, sidescan-sonar, and bathymetry data show that seafloor erosion is influenced by locally variable shallow
stratigraphy. The data reveal two general populations of shallow erosional depressions, either linear or subcircular in shape.
Linear depressions occur primarily where sandy distributary-channel deposits are exposed on the seafloor. The subcircular
pits are concentrated in areas where delta-front deposits crop out, and occasional seismic blanking indicates that gas is
present. The difference in erosional patterns suggests that delta-front and distributary-channel deposits respond uniquely
to wave and current energy expended on the inner shelf, particularly during stormy periods. Linear depressions may be the
result of the sandy distributary-channel deposits eroding more readily by waves and coastal currents than the surrounding
delta-front deposits. Pits may develop as gas discharge or liquefaction occurs within fine-grained delta-front deposits, causing
seafloor collapse. These detailed observations suggest that ravinement of this inner shelf surface may be ongoing, is controlled
by the underlying stratigraphy, and has varied morphologic expression. 相似文献
