We have analysed a series of surface samples from the alpine glaciers of Taylor Valley, Southern Victoria Land, Antarctica for their geochemical composition. This was done to better establish the role of glaciochemical variation on the chemical composition of meltwater streams emanating from the glaciers. The chemistry of the snow and ice changes with proximity to the ocean and with elevation of the glacier surface. The aeolian transport of dry valley dust, as indicated by both chemical and particulate matter variations, is a major process affecting the overall glacier chemistry and the chemistry of the meltwaters. Streams originating on the western edges of the glaciers are more impacted by the aeolian input as they are in the direct path of the major regional wind direction. Our data strongly suggest that the variation in stream geochemistry in Taylor Valley is a result in part of the differences in chemical composition of glacier melt. There are many important scientific problems to be attacked in the submillimeter wavelength region including the astrophysics of star formation, the dynamics of protoplanetary systems, the physics of interstellar gas, mass loss from stars, supernovae, the chemical evolution of galaxies, the star formation rates in galaxies, the astrophysics of active galactic nuclei, the deuterium abundance in different astrophysical environments, and the distribution of the cosmic background radiation. However, to effectively explore this wavelength range requires going into space since atmospheric absorption precludes most observations from the ground. As in most areas of astronomy, the twin needs for sensitivity and high redsolution indicate use of an imaging interferometer, but the needed baselines of a few tens-of-meters require a large physical structure. The planned Space Station will provide, for the first time, a platform which is large enough to accommodate a forefront submillimeter synthesis instrument. Such a telescope would open an entirely new wavelength regime to astronomy with the attendant possibilities for unexpected new discoveries.A submillimeter array would also be technically well suited for operation on the Space Station. Second-of-are resolution at submillimeter wavelengths requires only relatively short baselines; pointing accuracy and tracking stability requirements are relatively crude being determined by the single dish size rather than the array resolution; radio frequency interference (RFI) susceptibility is very low due to the large frequency separation from normal communications bands; emissions from co-orbiting debris, dust, gas, and water vapour are uncorrelated between interferometer elements; baseline stability requirements, while severe, are less stringent than for optical/IR interferometers and can almost certainly be satisfied for existing phase correction and phaseless image restoration techniques; and the technology for the dishes, mounts, receivers, LO/IF systems, and correlators either exists or is a reasonable extrapolation of what already is available on the ground.We consider the applications and possible design of a Space Station based submillimeter array which could be mounted along the main (Y) axis of the Space Station and use orbital revolution and precession to produce high-resolution synthesis mapping in much the same way ground-based linear arrays do by Earth rotation synthesis.  相似文献

Nutrient surveys of the Gulf of Alaska, from 1997 through 1999, show that coastal waters of British Columbia and southern Alaska experienced nitrate depletion each spring and summer. Through the 1997–1998 El Niño, waters with less than 1 μM NO3 covered 250,000 km2 area greater than 1999. Silicate levels as low as 0.2 μM were observed in coastal waters, suggesting that diatom growth may have been nutrient limited both in 1998 and 1999. Detailed sampling off the southern coast of British Columbia revealed that 1998 nitrate levels were only half the average of that during the 1970s winter, were depleted 1 month earlier in spring and remained low throughout the summer. Satellite images show that, compared to 1997 and 1999, chlorophyll levels were much lower in the spring of 1998 throughout the coastal waters of the Gulf of Alaska. Conditions changed dramatically during the 1999 La Niña, with ocean-mixed layer depths increasing by 20 m in winter and 40 m in spring when compared to that during 1997–1998 El Niño. Winter nutrient levels increased and summer upwelling returned. Over the past several decades, a trend towards greater stratification of coastal waters appears to be affecting the supply of nutrients to the mixed layer. The effects of stratification were especially obvious during the 1998 El Niño.  相似文献

We report observations of the radio disk temperatures of Mars and Jupiter made during October 1971, at a wavelength of 1.35 cm. The mean disk temperature of Jupiter is 136 ± 5°K, in good agreement with the value 139 ± 6°K obtained by Wrixon et al. (1971) with the same instrument three years earlier. The disk temperature of Mars is 181 ± 11°K, consistent with an essentially wavelength independent disk temperature for Mars at radio wavelengths. The ratio of the two disk temperatures, 1.33 ± .07, is largely free of the systematic uncertainties: antenna gain, pointing, and atmospheric extinction.  相似文献

Resolution functions which permit the comparison of camera systems considered for earth-orbiting satellite missions, indicate that a mapping camera (f = 300 mm) with approximately 20 m ground resolution at a scale of 1 : 750 000 would prove more useful for photogrammetric applications than any of the systems currently planned. In the absence of specific satellite missions for mapping purposes, the value of Skylab-type experiments could be greatly enhanced by the inclusion of a metric camera. ERTS-A with an estimated ground resolution on the order of 180 m was not intended as a cartographic system. In its present mode it does not meet the standards set by scientists for detailed studies of the earth's resources.  相似文献

Dogwhelks Nucella lapillus became locally extinct on some shores adjacent to areas of high shipping/boating activity during the period of high tributyltin (TBT) contamination in the 1980s and early 1990s. However, the species has now re-colonised sites at which extinction occurred on the Isle of Cumbrae, the northeast coast of England, the Shetland Isles and southwest England. There have also been substantial declines in the severity of imposex on adjacent shores where the species has persisted during this period. Re-colonisation and recovery can be attributed to two measures: regulations prohibiting the use of TBT-based paints on vessels < 25 m in length and the development of slow-releasing, self-polishing copolymer paints. Nevertheless, the International Maritime Organisation has now imposed a total ban on the use of TBT-based paints as antifoulants. This is almost certain to result in the use of paints containing alternative biocides and there is widespread concern that there is relatively little information on which to assess their likely environmental impacts. They could cause substantial environmental damage.  相似文献

Recent studies of chemical weathering of andesitic-dacitic material on high-standing islands (HSIs) have shown these terrains have some of the highest observed rates of chemical weathering and associated CO2 consumption yet reported. However, the paucity of stream gauge data in many of these terrains has limited determination of chemical weathering product fluxes. In July 2006 and March 2008, stream water samples were collected and manual stream gauging was performed in watersheds throughout the volcanic island of Dominica in the Lesser Antilles. Distinct wet and dry season solute concentrations reveal the importance of seasonal variations on the weathering signal. A cluster analysis of the stream geochemical data shows the importance of parent material age on the overall delivery of solutes. Observed Ca:Na, HCO3:Na and Mg:Na ratios suggest crystallinity of the parent material may also play an important role in determining weathering fluxes. From total dissolved solids concentrations and mean annual discharge calculations we calculate chemical weathering yields of (6-106 t km−2 a−1), which are similar to those previously determined for basalt terrains. Silicate fluxes (3.1-55.4 t km−2 a−1) and associated CO2 consumption (190-1575 × 103 mol km−2 a−1) determined from our study are among the highest determined to date. The calculated chemical fluxes from our study confirm the weathering potential of andesitic-dacitic terrains and that additional studies of these terrains are warranted.  相似文献

We have investigated the geochemistry of supraglacial streams on the Canada Glacier, Taylor Valley, Antarctica during the 2001–2002 austral summer. Canada Glacier supraglacial streams represent the link between primary precipitation (i.e. glacier snow) and proglacial Lake Hoare. Canada Glacier supraglacial stream geochemistry is intermediate between glacier snow and proglacial stream geochemistry with average concentrations of 49.1 μeq L−1 Ca2+, 19.9 μeq L−1 SO42−, and 34.3 μeq L−1 HCO3. Predominant west to east winds lead to a redistribution of readily soluble salts onto the glacier surface, which is reflected in the geochemistry of the supraglacial streams. Western Canada Glacier supraglacial streams have average SO42−:HCO3 equivalent ratios of 1.0, while eastern supraglacial streams average 0.5, suggesting more sulfate salts reach and dissolve in the western supraglacial streams. A graph of HCO3 versus Ca2+ for western and eastern supraglacial streams had slopes of 0.87 and 0.72, respectively with R2 values of 0.84 and 0.83. Low concentrations of reactive silicate (> 10 μmol L−1) in the supraglacial streams suggested that little to no silicate weathering occurred on the glacier surface with the exception of cryoconite holes (1000 μmol L−1). Therefore, the major geochemical weathering process occurring in the supraglacial streams is believed to be calcite dissolution. Proglacial stream, Anderson Creek, contains higher concentrations of major ions than supraglacial streams containing 5 times the Ca2+ and 10 times the SO42−. Canada Glacier proglacial streams also contain higher concentrations (16.6–30.6 μeq L−1) of reactive silicate than supraglacial streams. This suggests that the controls on glacier meltwater geochemistry switch from calcite and gypsum dissolution to both salt dissolution and silicate mineral weathering as the glacier meltwater evolves. Our chemical mass balance calculations indicate that of the total discharge into Lake Hoare, the final recipient of Canada Glacier meltwater, 81.9% is from direct glacier runoff and 19.1% is from proglacial Andersen Creek. Although during a typical, low melt ablation season Andersen Creek contributes over 40% of the water added to Lake Hoare, its overall chemical importance is diluted by the direct inputs from Canada Glacier during high flow years. Decadal warming events, such as the 2001–2002 austral summer produce supraglacial streams that are a major source of water to Lake Hoare.  相似文献
