Ashed twigs of Picea rubens (red spruce) collected over an area of uranium mineralization in central Nova Scotia were analyzed for uranium in the course of biogeochemical prospecting for this element. Uranium levels in background samples were significantly lower than in those collected from areas with mineralization either at depth or on the surface. Scintillometric data were useful only to differentiate background and surface mineralization. Uranium levels in soils showed no correlation whatsoever with mineralization or with radiometry. There was a very high degree of correlation between the scintillometric data and uranium concentrations in ashed twigs and it is considered that twigs of Picea rubens might be successfully used for biogeochemical prospecting for uranium in this area. 相似文献

Mercury capture by selected Bulgarian fly ashes: Influence of coal rank and fly ash carbon pore structure on capture efficiency 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Mercury capture by fly ash C was investigated at five lignite- and subbituminous-coal-burning Bulgarian power plants (Republika, Bobov Dol, Maritza East 2, Maritza East 3, and Sliven). Although the C content of the ashes is low, never exceeding 1.6%, the Hg capture on a unit C basis demonstrates that the low-rank-coal-derived fly ash carbons are more efficient in capturing Hg than fly ash carbons from bituminous-fired power plants. While some low-C and low-Hg fly ashes do not reveal any trends of Hg versus C, the 2nd and, in particular, the 3rd electrostatic precipitator (ESP) rows at the Republika power plant do have sufficient fly ash C range and experience flue gas sufficiently cool to capture measurable amounts of Hg. The Republika 3rd ESP row exhibits an increase in Hg with increasing C, as observed in other power plants, for example, in Kentucky power plants burning Appalachian-sourced bituminous coals. Mercury/C decreases with an increase in fly ash C, suggesting that some of the C is isolated from the flue gas stream and does not contribute to Hg capture. Mercury capture increases with an increase in Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area and micropore surface area. The differences in Hg capture between the Bulgarian plants burning low-rank coal and high volatile bituminous-fed Kentucky power plants suggests that the variations in C forms resulting from the combustion of the different ranks also influence the efficiency of Hg capture. 相似文献

The Malino Metamorphic Complex (MMC) is located at the western end of the north arm of Sulawesi. It consists of mica schists and gneisses (derived from proximal turbidite and granitoid protoliths), with intercalations of greenschist, amphibolite, marble, and quartzite, forming an E-W elongated dome-like structure bounded on all sides by faults. The age of the MMC is constrained between Devonian and Early Carboniferous. This Paleozoic age, the presence of Archean and Proterozoic inherited zircons, and the isotopic signature of the mica schists and gneisses indicate that the terrane was derived from the New Guinea-Australian margin of Gondwana. Similarities with basement rocks in the Bird’s Head suggests a common origin. Greenschists forming a discontinuous selvage (metamorphic carapace) around the complex were derived from adjacent autochthonous Paleogene formations. The rocks of the MMC show a Barrovian-type progression from greenschist through epidote-amphibolite to amphibolite facies. P–T estimations suggest a depth of burial of up to 27–30 km. K/Ar and 40Ar/39Ar cooling ages of 23–11 Ma, and a 7 Ma age for unconformably overlying volcanic rocks, indicate that the complex was exhumed during the Miocene. Two tectonic scenarios are considered: 1. the continental fragment docked with Sulawesi during the Mesozoic and was exhumed as a metamorphic core complex during the Miocene; 2. it was subducted beneath the north arm during the late Oligocene and then rapidly returned back to the surface. 相似文献

Examination of the Degradation of Drugs in Municipal Sewage Plants Using Liquid Chromatography-Electrospray Mass Spectrometry Numerous drugs can be identified in the secondary effluent of municipal sewage plants. In order to obtain information about the degree of elimination (adsorption, aerobic degradation) of these compounds, a batch reactor containing different drugs in environmentally relevant concentrations and a suspension of activated sludge was coupled to a HPLC-MS-MS system. During a testing period of three days concentration-time-curves were recorded. For most of the examined drugs (acetamidoantipyrine, crotamiton, diclofenac, primidone, propyphenazone) solely a strong decrease of the initial concentration within the first 15 minutes was observed, which was interpreted primarily as adsorption to the activated sludge. For acetaminophenol and pentoxifyllin an additional slower decrease in concentration within several hours was observed. This slower elimination was interpreted to be caused mainly by primary degradation. It could be shown that dihydrocodeine is oxidized to hydrocodone in the batch reactor. The conjugate acetaminophen glucuronide was cleaved. 相似文献

The structures of the links in the chain drought, harvest failure, famine are examined. Possible interventions are feasible at the link between drought and harvest failure, to lessen or avert the impact. Such interventions, based upon knowledge of the climatology of drought-prone regions, may be discussed under three headings: short-term predictions, long-term predictions, and the analysis of spatial patterns of drought.Basically, there are three climate-based methods of producing a short-term (within growing-season) forecast of crop yield. The first is to use a water balance model to estimate soil moisture deficits. The second approach applies regression analysis techniques to the development of models of crop-climate relationships. The third is the possibility of long-range weather forecasts.Long-term predictions rely on the fact that drought occurrence is a function of the balance between rainfall and evapotranspiration. It is possible to develop scenarios of future trends in these two variables, arising from both physical and anthropogenic forcing. Some potential forcing mechanisms are discussed.Finally, analysis of spatial patterns of drought at the national level will permit deeper insight into the phenomenon. This has potential benefits for the planning process, such as the identification of drought-prone areas and of spatial compensation zones (regions commonly drought-free when the principal grain-producing areas are affected).Together, these three items form a comprehensive strategy for applied research into the physical and human factors underlying drought. 相似文献

The results of evolutionary computations for massive binary systems (initial masses of the primary 10M
) with mass ratios between 0.3 and 0.8 are summarized and compared with observations in order to verify how far one can go with the conservative assumption of mass exchange. It is found that conservative mass exchange leads to acceptable first-order models of W-R and massive X-ray binaries. However, the comparison between this theory and observation reveals that for the observed systems (W-R and X-ray binaries) a preference exists for low intial mass ratios; moreover, the X-ray luminosities of the theoretical models are systematically too low, though this may be due to the adopted wind model. In addition, the influences of several parameters (distance between the components, chemical composition, primary mass, mass ratio and atmosphere) are examined. These parameters influence the remnant mass and any further evolution only marginally. Attention is also given to the effect on the system parameters of a supernova explosion of the remnant of the mass-losing component. For a large range of systems a disruption probability smaller than 25% is found. 相似文献

Observations of the flare on 7 January 1992 are interpreted using a topological model of the magnetic field. The model, developed here, applies a theory of three-dimensional reconnection to the inferred magnetic field configuration for 7 January. In the model field a new bipole ( 1021 Mx) emerges amidst pre-existing active region flux. This emergence gives rise to two current ribbons along the boundaries (separators) separating the distinct, new and old, flux systems. Sudden reconnection across these boundary curves transfers 3 ×1020 Mx of flux from the bipole into the surrounding flux. The model also predicts the simultaneous (sympathetic) flaring of the two current ribbons. This explains the complex two-loop structure noted in previous observations of this flare. We subject the model predictions to comparisons with observations of the flare. The locations of current ribbons in the model correspond closely with those of observed soft X-ray loops. In addition the footpoints and apexes of the ribbons correspond with observed sources of microwave and hard X-ray emission. The magnitude of energy stored by the current ribbons compares favorably to the inferred energy content of accelerated electrons in the flare. 相似文献

The spectroscopic period of the short periodic Cepheid SU Cas was determined from the radial velocity measurements by ABT, GIEREN and HÄUPL. The calculated period is 1.949312 days. Radial velocity differences between measurements by GIEREN and HÄUPL are explained as velocity zero point of the used spectrographs. The zero point of the Tautenburg Coudé spectrograph was determined by measuring the radial velocity standard star ϵ Leo. The difference to the standard value was -0.7 km/s. No significant differences are found between the spectroscopic period and light curve of SU Cas in the last 35 years. 相似文献

Eighty-seven measurements of the thermal structure in the atmosphere of Venus between the altitudes of about 40 and 85 km were derived from Pioneer Venus Orbiter radio occultation data taken during four occultation seasons from December 1978 to October 1981. These measurements cover latitudes from ?68 to 88° and solar zenith angles of 8 to 166°. The results indicate that the characteristics of the thermal structure in both the troposphere and stratosphere regions are dependent predominantly on the latitude and only weakly on solar illumination conditions. In particular, the circumpolar collar cloud region in the northern hemisphere (latitude 55 to 77°) displays the most dramatic changes in structure, including the appearance of a large inversion, having an average magnitude of about 18°K and a maximum of about 33°K. Also in this region, the tropopause altitude rises by about 4.8 km above its value at low latitudes, the tropopause temperature drops by about 60°K, and the pressure at the tropopause decreases by an average of about 240 mbar. These changes in the collar region are correlated with observations of increased turbulence and greater amplitude of thermal waves in the region, which is located where the persistent circulation pattern in the Venus atmosphere changes from zonally symmetric retrograde rotation to a hemispherical circumpolar vortex. It was shown that the large zonal winds associated with this circulation pattern are not likely to produce distortions in the atmosphere of a magnitude that could lead to temperature errors of the order of the mesosphere inversions observed in the collar region, but under certain circumstances zonal wind distortion could cause errors of 3–4°K. 相似文献

Three special classes of equilibrium orientations of gyrostat satellites subject to gravitational torques have been treated in the literature. Here we find the set of all equilibria for a restricted class of gyrostat configurations. Those configurations for which the internal angular momentum vector (or the rotor axis) is aligned with a principal axis have been treated in a separate work, where it is shown that at one, and only one, rotor speed there exists a continuum of equilibrium orientations. When the rotor axis is moved away from a principal axis in such a way that it is contained in a plane formed by two principal axes, it is shown that the continuum disappears, and we have a new set of eight equilibrium orientations which have not previously been described. The stability of these orientations is then investigated using the Hamiltonian as a Liapunov testing function.
