The actual knowledge on Horizontal Branch stars of the metal-poor Globular Clusters of our Galaxy suggests that these stars evolve along the Horizontal Branch from the very blue stars towards lower effective temperature.From this behaviour it follows that a substantial mass loss occurs at the He-flash. On the basis of a gravitational thermalization of Horizontal Branch stars any recent observational data concerning NGC 7006 are re-examined. It is pointed out that today it is not necessary to leave the hypothesis of a strong correlation between the metal and helium content for our Galaxy.At present at the Osservatorio Astronomico, Bologna.  相似文献

In the light of our present knowledge on stellar evolution, it is shown that red ZAHB will not develop for very low metal Globular Clusters ifY is appreciably greater than 0.1.Recent determinations of the mass-sizes of the He-cores at the time of the He-flash support independently conclusion that, if no increase in surface He-abundance occurs between the turn-off evolutionary phase and the H.B. stages,Y-values lower than 0.2 imply ages of the clusters larger than 20 b.y. By comparing evolutionary paths with the observed populations of the Horizontal Branches we find evidence for mass loss in blue H.B., and evidence for mass dispersion in red H.B. not depopulated in RR Lyrae. A few clusters (M3, M15) have their H.B. dominated by mass dispersion. Finally the expected correlations between mass loss and spatial distribution of H.B. stars are briefly discussed in order to point out some observational possibilities.  相似文献

An effort is made to select, from the available observational data, information concerning the asymptotic branch stars. Particular care is devoted to derive luminosity functions for these stars in clusters representative of selected classes. Some theoretical predictions are briefly made. It is stressed that, from a theoretical point of view, the comparison between the one-shell H-burning evolutionary characteristics and the corresponding ones for the A.B. phase could be expected to provide a powerful means of investigation.
Sommario Sulla base dei dati osservativi disponibili sono raccolte ed esaminate le possibili informazioni riguardanti la fase di braccio asintotico. In particolare vengono investigate le funzioni di luminosità relative a questa fase evolutiva, e ne viene tentato un inquadramento nella classificazione multidimensionale degli ammassi globulari recentemente proposta. Sono fornite alcune valutazioni teoriche, ed è messo in evidenza come il confronto delle caratteristiche evolutive delle fasi di bruciamento ad una (H) e due (H, He) shell potrebbe rivelarsi come un potente mezzo di investigazione.

Rock fragments from the deepest parts of a buried hydrothermal system belonging to the Mesozoic Tethys Ocean entered as xenoliths in a Miocenic diatreme,hence brought to the surface,in the Hyblean Plateau(Sicily).Some xenoliths consist of strongly serpentinized ultramafic rocks bearing blebs of abiotic organic matter,where clusters of amorphous carbon nanoparticles,including nanodiamonds,are immersed.Such an occurrence conjures up established hypotheses that diamond surfaces are suitable catalytic platforms stimulating the assemblage of complex bio-organic molecules relevant to the emergence of life on Earth.The appearance of bio-organic molecules under primitive Earth conditions is one of the major unsolved questions on the origin of life.Here we report new micro-Raman spectra on blebs of abiotic organic matter from a selected xenolith.Diamond bands were related to hydrogenated nanocrystalline diamonds,with size of nearly 1-1.6 nm,formed from organics at low pressures and temperatures.In particular,diamond surfaces can give rise to crystalline interfacial water layers that may have played a fundamental role in the early biosphere evolution as a good medium for rapidly transporting positive charges in the form of hydrated protons.Nowadays,proton gradients in alkaline hydrothermal vents along oceanic ridges are generally viewed as key pre-biotic factors.In general,serpentinites span the entire geological record,including prebiotic times.These hydrous ultramafic rocks often display evidence of abiotic carbon species,both organic and inorganic,including nanodiamonds,being also capable to give rise to chemiosmotic processes and proton gradients necessary to the organisms,such as the"Last Universal Common Ancestor"(LUCA),in the prebiotic Earth.  相似文献

The East African Rift System (EARS) exerted a major influence on river drainage basins and regional climate of east Africa during the Cenozoic. Recent studies have highlighted an offshore branch of the EARS in the western Indian Ocean, where the Kerimbas Graben and the Davie Ridge represent its sea floor expression. To date, a clear picture of the impact and timing of this EARS offshore branch on the continental margin of the western Indian Ocean, and associated sediment dispersal pathways, is still missing. This study presents new evidence for four giant canyons along the northern portion of the Davie Ridge offshore Tanzania. Seismic and multibeam bathymetric data highlight that the southernmost three canyons are now inactive, supra-elevated relative to the adjacent sea floor of the Kerimbas Graben and disconnected from the modern slope systems offshore the Rovuma and Rufiji River deltas. Regional correlation of dated seismic horizons, integrated with well data and sediment samples, proves that the tectonic activity driving the uplift of the Davie Ridge in this area has started during the middle-upper Miocene and is still ongoing, as suggested by the presence of fault escarpments at the sea floor and by the location and magnitude of recent earthquakes. Our findings contribute to placing the Kerimbas Graben and the Davie Ridge offshore Tanzania in the regional geodynamic context of the western Indian Ocean and show how the tectonics of the offshore branch of the EARS modified the physiography of the margin, re-routing the deep-water drainage network since the middle Miocene. Future studies are needed to understand the influence of changing sea floor topography on the western Indian Ocean circulation and to evaluate the potential of the EARS offshore tectonics in generating tsunamigenic events.  相似文献

Clinoforms are basinward-dipping and accreting palaeo-bathymetric profiles that record palaeo-environmental conditions and processes; thus, clinothems represent natural palaeo-archives. Here, we document shelf-edge scale clinoform sets which prograded through the entire width of an epicontinental marine basin (ca. 400 km), eventually encroaching onto the opposite basin flank, where they started to prograde upslope and landward, in defiance of gravity (“upslope-climbing clinoforms”). The giant westward-prograding Eridanos muddy shelf-edge clinothem originated from the Baltic hinterland in the Oligocene and achieved maximum regression in the Early Pleistocene, on the UK Central Graben (CG) and Mid North Sea High (MNSH), after crossing the whole North Sea mesopelagic depocentre and causing near complete basin infill. Here we integrate well and seismic data through the MNSH and CG and examine the Eridanos final heyday and demise, identifying five clinothem complexes (A1, A2, A3, B and C) and six depositional sequence boundaries (SB1 to SB6) in the Miocene-Recent section. Tectonic and climatic events drove the recent evolution of this system. Early Pleistocene climate cooling, in particular, resulted in a stepwise increase in sediment supply. This climaxed in the earliest Calabrian, following a likely Eburonian eustatic fall (=SB3) when the Eridanos clastic wedge was restructured from a 100–300 m thick compound shelf-edge and delta system to a “hybrid” shelf-edge delta at sequence boundary SB3 (ca. 1.75 Ma). In the ca. 40 kyr that followed SB3, a progradation rate peak (>1,000 m/kyr) is associated with clinoforms starting to accrete upslope, onto the east-dipping slope between CG and MNSH. This “upslope-climbing clinoform” phase was quickly followed by the maximum regression and final retreat of the Eridanos system in the Early Calabrian (=SB4), likely as the result of climate-driven changes in the Baltic hinterland and/or delta auto-retreat. To our knowledge, this contributions represents the first documentation of “upslope-climbing clinoforms” recorded in the stratigraphic record.  相似文献

In recent times evidence for bimodal distributions of stars in the H–R diagram has reached a striking evidence. These bimodal distributions seem to be correlated with a bimodal distribution of masses and angular velocities. The approach we propose to explain the observed bimodality suggests that this latter is due to a bimodal mass loss by magnetically controlled stellar winds during stellar evolution, owing to different magnetic field configurations. It is assumed a mechanism analogous to that which produces solar wind, with magnetic field generated by dynamo working in the convection zone. Different field geometries (dipole cr quadrupole), which depend on the mode the dynamo operates, can produce different but discrete mass losses during stellar evolution, thus producing bimodal distributions of masses and angular velocities.  相似文献

Systematic in situ analysis of active fault zones in Val d’Agri (southern Italy) suggests that the acquisition of quantitative data on fault-related structural discontinuities is fundamental for (1) discriminating between the latter and older regional features, (2) defining the architecture and related permeability structure of faults, and (3) performing simple statistics in order to evaluate the validity range within which fault characteristics may be considered to be fractals. This type of information can be integrated with regional seismotectonic analysis in order to asses the present-day conditions of deformation characterising the area, and to constrain the possible kinematics of the seismogenic structures controlling earthquake activity in this sector of the southern Apennines. The results of our study are also of interest for modelling earthquake sources, since a knowledge of the permeability structure and scaling properties of a faulted rock volume is potentially relevant for simulating the time and space dependent behaviour of fault zones during a seismic cycle.  相似文献
