After two years of verification and validation activities of the Jason-1 altimeter data, it appears that all the mission specifications are completely fulfilled. Performances of all instruments embarked onboard the platform meet all the requirements of the mission. However, the star tracker system has shown some occasional abnormal behavior leading to mispointing angles out of the range of Jason-1 system specification which states that the altimeter antenna shall be pointed to the nadir direction with an accuracy below 0.2 degree (3 sigma). This article discusses the platform attitude angle and its consequences on the altimetric estimates. We propose improvements of the Jason-1 retracking process to better account for attitude effects.
The first star tracker anomalies for the Jason-1 mission were detected in April 2002. The Poseidon-2 algorithms were specified assuming an antenna off-nadir angle smaller than 0.3 degree. For higher values, the current method to estimate the ocean parameters is known to be inaccurate. Thus, the algorithm has to be reviewed, and more specifically, the present altimeter echo model has to be modified to meet the desired instrument performance.
Therefore, we derive a second order analytical model of the altimeter echo to take into account attitude angles up to 0.8 degree, and consequently, we adapt the retracking algorithm. This new model is tested on theoretical simulated data using a maximum likelihood estimation. Biases and noise performance characteristics are computed for the different estimated parameters. They are compared to the ones obtained with the current algorithm. This new method provides highly improved estimations for high attitude angles. It is statistically validated on real data by applying it on several cycles of Poseidon-2 raw measurements. The results are found to be consistent with those obtained from simulations. They also fully agree with the TOPEX estimates when flying along the same ground track. Finally, the estimates are also in agreement with the ones available in the current I/GDR (Intermediate Geophysical Data Record) products when mispointing lies in the mission specifications. 相似文献

The photoreactivity of chromophoric dissolved organic matter (CDOM) transported to Arctic shelf environments by rivers has only recently been studied and its quantitative role in Arctic shelf biogeochemistry has received little attention. Sunlight exposure experiments were performed on CDOM collected over a three year period (2002 to 2004) from river, estuary, shelf, and gulf regions of the Western Canadian Arctic. Decreases in CDOM absorption, synchronous fluorescence (SF), and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentration were followed after 3 days of exposure, and in two experiments, six optical cutoff filters were used to incrementally remove ultraviolet radiation incident on the samples. Apparent quantum yields for CDOM photobleaching (AQYble) and for DOC photomineralization (AQYmin) were computed, as were two AQY spectra (ble and min) for the Mackenzie River and a sample from the Mackenzie Shelf. The photoreactivity of Mackenzie River CDOM was highest after break-up and peak discharge and lowest in late summer. The half-lives of CDOM and DOC were estimated at 3.7 days and 4.8 days, respectively, when Mackenzie River water was exposed to full sunlight. Photobleaching of Mackenzie River CDOM fluorescence after most UV-B wavelengths were removed increased the correlation between the river and offshore waters in the Beaufort Sea. When light attenuation from particle- and CDOM-rich river water was considered for the Mackenzie Shelf, our photodegradation models estimated around 10% loss of absorption and < 1% DOC loss, suggesting that sunlight exposure does not substantially degrade CDOM on Arctic shelves. 相似文献

We describe a novel inexpensive method, utilizing particle image velocimetry (PIV) and refractive index‐matching (RIM) for visualizing and quantifying the flow field within bio‐amended porous media. To date, this technique has been limited to idealized particles, whose refractive index does not match that of fresh water and thus requires specialized and often toxic or hazardous fluids. Here, we use irregularly shaped grains made of hydrogel as the solid matrix and water as the fluid. The advantage of using water is that it provides, for the first time, the opportunity to study both hydraulic and biological processes, which typically occur in soils and streambeds. By using RIM coupled with PIV (RIM‐PIV), we measured the interstitial flow field within a cell packed with granular material consisting of hydrogel grains in a size range of 1–8 mm, both in the presence and in the absence of Sinorhizobium meliloti bacteria (strain Rm8530). We also performed experiments with fluorescent tracer (fluorescein) and fluorescent microbes (Shewanella GPF MR‐1) to test the capability of visualizing solute transport and microbial movements. Results showed that the RIM‐PIV can measure the flow field for both biofilm‐free and biofilm‐covered hydrogel grains. The fluorescent tracer injection showed the ability to visualize both physical (concave surfaces and eddies) and biological (biofilms) transient storage zones, whereas the fluorescent microbe treatment showed the ability to track microbial movements within fluids. We conclude that the proposed methodology is a promising tool to visualize and quantify biofilm attachment, growth, and detachment in a system closer to natural conditions than a 2D flow cell experiment. 相似文献

The California Current System (CCS) is an eastern boundary upwelling system characterized by strong eddies that are often generated at the coast. These eddies contribute to intense, long-distance cross-shelf transport of upwelled water with enhanced biological activity. However, the mechanisms of formation of such coastal eddies, and more importantly their capacity to trap and transport tracers, are poorly understood. Their unpredictability and strong dynamics leave us with an incomplete picture of the physical and biological processes at work, their effects on coastal export, lateral water exchange among eddies and their surrounding waters, and how long and how far these eddies remain coherent structures. Focusing our analysis on the southern part of the CCS, we find a predominance of cyclonic eddies, with a 25-km radius and a SSH amplitude of 6 cm. They are formed near shore and travel slightly northwest offshore for ~?190 days at ~?2 km day?1. We then study one particular, representative cyclonic eddy using a combined Lagrangian and Eulerian numerical approach to characterize its kinematics. Formed near shore, this eddy trapped a core made up of ~?67% California Current waters and ~?33% California Undercurrent waters. This core was surrounded by other waters while the eddy detached from the coast, leaving the oldest waters at the eddy’s core and the younger waters toward the edge. Scattering and diffraction of elastic in-plane P- and SV-waves by a surface topography such as an elastic canyon at the surface of a half-space is a classical problem which has been studied by earthquake engineers and strong motion seismologists for over forty years. The case of out-of-plane SH-waves on the same elastic canyon that is semicircular in shape on the half-space surface is the first such problem that was solved by analytic closed-form solutions over forty years ago by Trifunac. The corresponding case of in-plane P- and SV-waves on the same circular canyon is a much more complicated problem because the in-plane P- and SV- scattered waves have different wave speeds and together they must have zero normal and shear stresses at the half-space surface. It is not until recently in 2014 that analytic solution for such problem is found by Lee and Liu. This paper uses their technique of defining these stress-free scattered waves, which Brandow and Lee previously used to solve the problem of the scattering and diffraction of these in-plane waves on an almost-circular surface canyon that is arbitrary in shape, to the study of the scattering and diffraction of these in-plane waves on an almost circular arbitrary-shaped alluvial valley. 相似文献

Shipping noise is a threat to marine wildlife. Grey seals are benthic foragers, and thus experience acoustic noise throughout the water column, which makes them a good model species for a case study of the potential impacts of shipping noise. We used ship track data from the Celtic Sea, seal track data and a coupled ocean-acoustic modelling system to assess the noise exposure of grey seals along their tracks. It was found that the animals experience step changes in sound levels up to ~ 20 dB at a frequency of 125 Hz, and ~ 10 dB on average over 10–1000 Hz when they dive through the thermocline, particularly during summer. Our results showed large seasonal differences in the noise level experienced by the seals. These results reveal the actual noise exposure by the animals and could help in marine spatial planning. 相似文献

Cloud profiling from active lidar and radar in the A-train satellite constellation has significantly advanced our understanding of clouds and their role in the climate system. Nevertheless, the response of clouds to a warming climate remains one of the largest uncertainties in predicting climate change and for the development of adaptions to change. Both observation of long-term changes and observational constraints on the processes responsible for those changes are necessary. We review recent progress in our understanding of the cloud feedback problem. Capabilities and advantages of active sensors for observing clouds are discussed, along with the importance of active sensors for deriving constraints on cloud feedbacks as an essential component of a global climate observing system. 相似文献

The paleomagnetic reconnaissance study of the Paleozoic and Mesozoic sedimentary rocks from the Yangtze Block (YZB) was made
to conduct the Apparent Polar Wander Path (APWP) of the YZB during the Phanerozoic. A total of 825 samples from 84 sites were
collected from a continuous section along the Xiangxi River valley in Xingshan and Zigui counties in Hubei Province, northern
margin of the YZB. Stepwise thermal/alternating demagnetization isolated well defined characteristic magnetization (ChRM)
at a higher temperature in most of the samples, and relatively thermal stability and high coercivity were revealed from these
samples. All the ChRMs can pass the fold and/or reversal tests, suggesting that they are probably primary. Therefore, new
pole positions are presented for the YZB.

We analyse the external field generated by a uniform distribution of magnetic susceptibility contained in an oblate spheroidal shell when it is magnetized by an internal magnetic field of arbitrary complexity. The situation is more relevant to the Earth than that of a spherical shell considered by Runcorn (1975a ) (in the context of lunar magnetism), because of the larger flattening of the Earth than that of the Moon. We find that, to first order in the susceptibility, each internal harmonic in a spheroidal harmonic expansion of the magnetic potential generates just one non-vanishing external field coefficient, unlike in the spherical case when all harmonics vanish identically. The field generated is proportional to the susceptibility, thickness of the shell and square of the Earth's eccentricity, and hence it appears that this field amplification mechanism will be very ineffective for the Earth. 相似文献
