We present a new determination of the optical luminosity function (OLF) of active galactic nuclei (AGN) at low redshifts ( z <0.15) based on Hubble Space Telescope ( HST ) observations of X-ray-selected AGN. The HST observations have allowed us to derive a true nuclear luminosity function for these AGN. The resulting OLF illustrates a two power-law form similar to that derived for quasi‐stellar objects (QSOs) at higher redshifts. At bright magnitudes, M B <−20, the OLF derived here exhibits good agreement with that derived from the Hamburg/European Southern Observatory (ESO) QSO survey. However, the single power-law form for the OLF derived from the Hamburg/ESO survey is strongly ruled out by our data at M B >−20. Although the estimate of the OLF is best fitted by a power-law slope at M B <−20.5 that is flatter than the slope of the OLF derived at z >0.35, the binned estimate of the low-redshift OLF is still consistent with an extrapolation of the z >0.35 OLF based on pure luminosity evolution.  相似文献

Polymetallic sulfide-sulfate mineralization enriched in Pb-Ag-As-Sb-Hg occurs in the Bransfield Strait, a late Tertiary-Quaternary marginal basin close to the Antarctic Peninsula. The mineralization is associated with bimodal volcanism and pelagic and volcaniclastic sediment in rifted continental crust. Hydrothermal precipitates have been recovered from two shallow (1,050–1,000 m water depth) submarine volcanoes (Hook Ridge and Three Sisters) in the Central Bransfield Strait. Mineralization at Hook Ridge consists of polymetallic sulfides, massive barite, and pyrite and marcasite crusts in semilithified pelagic and volcaniclastic sediment. Native sulfur commonly infills void space and cements the volcaniclastic sediment. The polymetallic sulfides are dominated by sphalerite with minor galena, enargite, tetrahedrite-tennantite, pyrite, chalcopyrite, and traces of orpiment cemented by barite and opal-A. The presence of enargite at Hook Ridge, the abundance of native sulfur, and the low Fe content of sphalerite indicate a high sulfur activity of the hydrothermal fluids responsible for mineralization. The sulfur isotopic composition of Hook Ridge precipitates documents the complexity of the sulfur sources in this hydrothermal system with variable influence of biological activity and possibly magmatic contributions. Homogenization temperatures and salinities of fluid inclusions in barite and opal-A suggest that boiling may have affected the hydrothermal fluids during their ascent. The discovery of massive barite-silica precipitates at another shallow marine volcano (Three Sisters volcano) attests to the potential for hydrothermal mineralization at other volcanic edifices in the area. The characteristics of the mineralization in the Bransfield Strait with rifting of continental crust, the presence of bimodal volcanism, including highly evolved felsic volcanic rocks, the association with sediments, and the Pb-Ag-As-Sb-Hg enrichment are similar to the setting of massive sulfide deposits in the Okinawa Trough, and distinct from those of sediment-dominated hydrothermal systems such as Escanaba Trough, Middle Valley, and Guaymas Basin. The geological setting of the Bransfield Strait is also broadly similar to that of some of the largest volcanogenic massive sulfide deposits in the ancient record, such as the Iberian Pyrite Belt.Editorial handling: B. Scum formation is a widespread problem in activated sludge nutrient removal plants. It often comes along with an excessive development of the filamentous bacterium “Microthrix parvicella” stabilizing the flotation process. As “M. parvicella” was found to depend on long‐chain fatty acids (LCFA) as sole carbon source not only in vitro but also in situ, some options of in‐situ substrate supply are discussed. Wastewater concentrations of fatty acids in the range of 2 to 15 mg L‐1 and homologue concentrations from synthetic surfactant degradation below 10 mg L‐1 rule out these substrates as source for excessive biomass production. They might, however, well be suitable for start‐up of a “M. parvicella” population. Build‐up of excessive biomass might rely on fatty acid supply originating in cell walls of lysed stationary phase bacteria of long residence time sludge fractions such as scum layers. Moreover, biogenic surfactants such as rhamnolipids have been proved to be an excellent carbon source for excessive biomass production in vitro.  相似文献

Besides the old-settledDaphnia hyalina a ‘galeata’-type ofDaphnia immigrated into Lake Constance (Upper Lake) in the beginning of the fifties. Since this time a great number of phenotypes with a high degree of morphological variations was registrated. Since about 1970 a smallDaphnia type became more and more numerous, especially in the eastern part of the lake. An exact determination is not yet possible. In 1972 an extreme maximum ofDaphnia males was found. The share of males increased from 3 to 4% of the population to 30% in autumn 1972. In the following years the percentage decreased again to the formerly observed 3–4%. The relationship to the phytoplankton biomass is discussed.  相似文献

The seasonal occurrence of 94 benthic algal species, including Cyanophyta, was observed on a monthly basis over one year in the Patos Lagoon estuary (32°S, 52°W), Brazil, and showed three patterns of algal periodicity. An aseasonal group of 46 species was present throughout the year and two groups of 24 species each occurred either during summer and fall or winter and spring. The seasonal growth of 55 green, brown and red algae was correlated with monthly variations of salinity, water temperature, daylength and light radiation energy, which were measured daily in the estuary. Summer/fall peak growth was observed in 15 algae most of which correlated significantly with high salinities alone or in combination with other factors during this period. Growth peak of 11 species in winter/spring was principally a function of low water temperatures alone or together with a reduced light regime.Both periodicity of benthic algae and their seasonal growth, as a more sensitive measure of their floristic affinity, demonstrated the presence of cool temperate and tropical elements in this flora typical for warm temperate biogeographic regions. Correlations between seasonal variation of algal growth and selected environmental parameters aided in the evaluation of causal factors for algal seasonality.  相似文献

ABSTRACT The carbon-isotope signature of terrestrial organic matter (OM) offers a valuable tool to develop stratigraphic correlations for near-shore deposits. A mid-Cretaceous coastal succession of the western Algarve Basin, Portugal, displays a marked negative δ13C excursion ranging from − 21.2‰ to − 27.8‰ in the Early Aptian followed by two shifts towards higher values (up to − 19.3‰) during the Early and Late Aptian, respectively. The dominance of cuticle and leaf debris in the bulk OM fraction is confirmed by optical studies, Rock-Eval pyrolysis and by comparison with the δ13C signature of four different types of fossilized land-plant particles. Correlation of two terrestrial δ13Cbulk OM records from different study sites leads to a significant enhancement of the intrabasinal stratigraphic correlation within the Algarve Basin. Three prominent excursions in the Portuguese records can be correlated with existing δ13C curves from pelagic and terrestrial environments. The general carbon-isotope pattern is superimposed by small-scale fluctuations which can be explained by compositional variations within the OM.  相似文献

Our study at this natural analog site contributes to the evaluation of methods within a hierarchical monitoring concept suited for the control of CO2 degassing. It supports the development of an effective monitoring concept for geological CO2 storage sites—carbon capture and storage as one of the pillars of the European climate change efforts. This study presents results of comprehensive investigations along a 500-m long profile within the Hartou?ov (Czech Republic) natural CO2 degassing site and gives structural information about the subsurface and interaction processes in relation to parameters measured. Measurements of CO2 concentrations and investigation of the subsurface using electrical resistivity tomography and self-potential methods provide information about subsurface properties. For their successful application it is necessary to take seasonal variations (e.g., soil moisture, temperature, meteorological conditions) into consideration due to their influence on these parameters. Locations of high CO2 concentration in shallow depths are related to positive self-potential anomalies, low soil moistures and high resistivity distributions, as well as high δ13C values and increased radon concentrations. CO2 ascends from deep geological sources via preferential pathways and accumulates in coarser sediments. Repetition of measurements (which includes the effects of seasonal variations) revealed similar trends and allows us to identify a clear, prominent zone of anomalous values. Coarser unconsolidated sedimentary layers are beneficial for the accumulation of CO2 gas. The distribution of such shallow geological structures needs to be considered as a significant environmental risk potential whenever sudden degassing of large gas volumes occurs.  相似文献

Small mountain lakes are natural archives for understanding long-term natural and anthropogenic impact on the environment. This study focused on long-term (last ca. 13 000 years) vegetation changes and sedimentary processes in the catchment area of Lake Planina pri jezeru (1430 m a.s.l.) by using mineralogical, geochemical and palynological methods. Palynological results suggest that regional vegetation between 12 900 and 11 700 cal a bp was a herbaceous–forest tundra (Pinus, Artemisia, Poaceae ). Climate warming at the beginning of the Holocene (ca. 11 700 cal a bp ) caused the transition from a wetland (Cyperaceae) to an eutrophic lake with alternating anoxic (pyrite) and oxic conditions (gypsum). In addition, the surrounding area became forested (Picea, Larix, Ulmus). Fagus expanded at 10 200 cal a bp and Abies at 8200 cal a bp. Between 7500 and 4300 cal a bp , human impact on the environment was barely noticeable and mostly limited to grazing. During 4300–430 cal a bp human impact became more evident and gradually increased. The greatest influence was observed from 430 cal a bp onwards, when excessive exploitation of the surrounding area (logging and grazing) severely eutrophicated the lake.  相似文献
