Isolates of the dinoflagellate Gonyaulax tamarensis were established from benthic cysts or motile cells collected along the north-western Atlantic coast from the Bay of Fundy to Long Island. All clones were grown under the same conditions and assayed in a blind test for toxin content and composition. Differences in toxin content (μmouse unit per cell) spanning two orders of magnitude were found, with decreasing toxicity from north to south. Some isolates had undetectable toxin levels. The low toxicity of southern strains of G. tamarensis may explain the historical absence of paralytic shellfish poisoning (PSP) in areas where cysts and motile cells have been reported. The cause of the observed geographic pattern is unknown, but is does suggest that there may be an environmentally-determined southern limit to the regional PSP problem.Qualitative data on the toxin composition of some clones indicate that saxitoxin, neosaxitoxin and gonyautoxins -II, -III and -IV are generally present. A more quantitative approach (i.e. one which examines each isolate for all of the 12 Gonyaulax toxins) is needed to fully utilize the potential of toxin composition in discriminating between strains. 相似文献

The steady velocity, perturbation pressure and perturbation magnetic field, driven by an isolated buoyant parcel of Gaussian shape in a rapidly rotating, unconfined, incompressible electrically conducting fluid in the presence of an imposed uniform magnetic field, are obtained by means of the Fourier transform in the limit of small Ekman number. Lorentz and inertial forces are neglected. The solution requires at most evaluation of a single integral and is found in closed form in some spatial regions. The solution has structure on two disparate scales: on the scale of the buoyant parcel and on the scale of the Taylor column, which is elongated in the direction of the rotation axis. The detailed structures of the flow and pressure depend linearly on the relative orientation of gravity and rotation, with the solution for arbitrary orientation being a linear combination of two limiting cases in which these vectors are colinear (polar case) and perpendicular (equatorial case). The perturbation magnetic field depends additionally on the relative orientation of the imposed magnetic field, and three limiting cases of interest are presented in which gravity and rotation are colinear (polar–toroidal case), gravity and imposed field are colinear (equatorial–radial case) and all three are mutually perpendicular (equatorial–toroidal case). Visualization and analysis of the velocity and perturbation magnetic field vectors are facilitated by dividing these vector fields into geostrophic and ageostrophic protions. In all cases, the geostrophic and ageostrophic portions have different structure on the Taylor-column scale. The buoyancy force is balanced by a pressure force in the polar case and by a flux of momentum in the equatorial case. The pressure force and momentum flux do not decay in strength with increasing axial distance. Far from the parcel, the axial mass flux varies as the inverse one-third power of distance from the parcel. The velocity has a single geostrophic vortex in the polar case and two vortices in the equatorial case. The perturbation magnetic field has two, four and one geostrophic vortices in the polar–toroidal, equatorial–radial and equatorial–toroidal cases, respectively. Potentially toxic metals, such as Cu, Pb and Zn, are leached from weathered rocks at many closed mine sites due to the acidic environments and mineralogical modifications. The mobilized toxic metals may cause contamination of surrounding water bodies. In this study, both laboratory column experiments and field observations at a former mine located in the north of Japan were carried out to compare the leaching behavior of Cu, Pb and Zn. The thickness of the surface weathered rock was varied (10, 20 and 30 cm) for the columns experiments while porous cups for porewater sampling were set up at different depths (GL-15, -45, -70, and -95 cm) for the field observations. Deionized water was added once a week over 75 weeks to the columns to simulate rainfall while porewater was extracted by a vacuum pump in several sampling campaigns (over 18 months). Similar low pH and leaching behavior of potentially toxic metals were observed for column experiments and field observations. A moderate increase in concentration with depth was observed for Cu and Zn. However, no increase in concentration was observed for Pb. This suggests that the leaching of Cu and Zn is enhanced by the length of the flow pathway through the weathered rock layer while Pb concentration is restricted by the precipitation of insoluble Pb sulfate. Thus, the thickness of the weathered rock layer is an important parameter that should be taken into consideration to estimate the loads of some potentially toxic metals, which is important when designing remediation schemes. 相似文献

The Solar Optical Telescope (SOT) onboard Hinode aims to obtain vector magnetic fields on the Sun through precise spectropolarimetry of solar spectral lines with a spatial
resolution of 0.2 – 0.3 arcsec. A photometric accuracy of 10−3 is achieved and, after the polarization calibration, any artificial polarization from crosstalk among Stokes parameters is
required to be suppressed below the level of the statistical noise over the SOT’s field of view. This goal was achieved by
the highly optimized design of the SOT as a polarimeter, extensive analyses and testing of optical elements, and an end-to-end

The Solar Optical Telescope (SOT) aboard the Hinode satellite (formerly called Solar-B) consists of the Optical Telescope Assembly (OTA) and the Focal Plane Package (FPP). The OTA is a 50-cm diffraction-limited
Gregorian telescope, and the FPP includes the narrowband filtergraph (NFI) and the broadband filtergraph (BFI), plus the Stokes
Spectro-Polarimeter (SP). The SOT provides unprecedented high-resolution photometric and vector magnetic images of the photosphere
and chromosphere with a very stable point spread function and is equipped with an image-stabilization system with performance
better than 0.01 arcsec rms. Together with the other two instruments on Hinode (the X-Ray Telescope (XRT) and the EUV Imaging Spectrometer (EIS)), the SOT is poised to address many fundamental questions

The Solar Optical Telescope (SOT) aboard the Solar-B satellite (Hinode) is designed to perform high-precision photometric and polarimetric observations of the Sun in visible light spectra (388 – 668 nm)
with a spatial resolution of 0.2 – 0.3 arcsec. The SOT consists of two optically separable components: the Optical Telescope
Assembly (OTA), consisting of a 50-cm aperture Gregorian with a collimating lens unit and an active tip-tilt mirror, and an

The Hinode Solar Optical Telescope (SOT) is the first space-borne visible-light telescope that enables us to observe magnetic-field
dynamics in the solar lower atmosphere with 0.2 – 0.3 arcsec spatial resolution under extremely stable (seeing-free) conditions.
To achieve precise measurements of the polarization with diffraction-limited images, stable pointing of the telescope (<0.09 arcsec,
3σ) is required for solar images exposed on the focal plane CCD detectors. SOT has an image stabilization system that uses image
displacements calculated from correlation tracking of solar granules to control a piezo-driven tip-tilt mirror. The system
minimizes the motions of images for frequencies lower than 14 Hz while the satellite and telescope structural design damps
microvibration in higher frequency ranges. It has been confirmed from the data taken on orbit that the remaining jitter is
less than 0.03 arcsec (3σ) on the Sun. This excellent performance makes a major contribution to successful precise polarimetric measurements with 0.2 – 0.3 arcsec
resolution.

Euhedral dissakisites from Trimouns dolomite mine, France, is compositionally zoned. Back-scattered electron (BSE) images
reveal that each of the described dissakisite crystals has three distinct compositional zones: normal zoned core (Mg-rich),
oscillatory zoned middle (Ca–Al-rich) and homogeneous rim (Fe–ΣREE-rich). The latter zone with Fe2+ > Mg corresponds to allanite-(Ce). Dissakisite-(Ce) also displays pronounced zoning in Fe/Mg which may suggest that the temperature
of crystallization continuously decreased from core to rim. Despite a systematic increase in Fe/Mg of the dissakisite with
an allanite rim, there is no monotonic decrease in the REE zoning: the normal zoned core and homogeneous rim are rich in La,
Ce and Pr, but the relatively REE-poor oscillatory zoned middle is relatively abundant in Y, Sm and Gd. Discontinuous variation
in REE content of the dissakisite, with the allanite rim may indicate a localized change in either the relative concentration
of various ligands or pH of the crystallizing fluid. Observations under the polarizing microscope confirm that the different
zones have simultaneous extinction. These chemical and optical observations suggest that epitaxial crystallization of dissakisite,
from Trimouns, passes through three formation stages. The ternary Fe2+–Mg2+–(Al + Fe)3+ diagram illustrates that in general dissakisite can be classified into two groups, (Al + Fe)3+-rich and an Mg-rich; dissakisite from Trimouns belongs to the former group. Chondrite-normalized REE patterns of dissakisites
from Trimouns are similar to those of allanites formed by hydrothermal fluids. In conclusion, it is clear from the above two
geochemical characteristics that dissakisites from Trimouns are of (Al + Fe)3+-type, and were derived from hydrothermal fluids. 相似文献

The crystal chemistry of volcanic allanites from both the Youngest Toba Tuff (YTT), Sumatra, Indonesia and SK100 volcanic ash beds (SK100-VAB), Niigata, Japan has been examined by electron microprobe analysis (EMPA), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopic analysis (FTIR), and single-crystal structure analysis. In the FTIR study, based on the Diamond ATR accessory, YTT and SK100- VAB allanites were observed to have different OH contents, respectively: the former has 0.64 wt% H2O (OH: 0.40 apfu.), while the latter has 1.65 wt% H2O (OH: 1.00 apfu.). The crystal structures of these two allanites have been refined to individual R indices (3.64 and 4.25) based on 1350 observed reflections (|Fo| > 4sig|Fo|) measured using a single-crystal diffractometer with MoKα X-radiation. The OH-poor YTT allanite has a shorter b axis, a longer c axis, and larger β value than the relatively OH-rich SK100-VAB one. The bond valence sums of O4 (accepter oxygen for H atom) and O10 (donor oxygen for H atom) are 1.962 and 1.709 v.u. for YTT allanite (valence sum: 3.671 v.u.) and 1.754 and 1.271 v.u. for SK100-VAB one (valence sum: 3.025 v.u.). The difference from the ideal total bond valence value (4.00 v.u.) of O4 and O10 in YTT allanite (0.33 v.u.) is smaller than that in SK100-VAB (0.98 v.u.). These difference values are also broadly consistent with the corresponding differences in OH content between the YTT (OH: 0.40 apfu.) and SK100-VAB allanites (OH: 1.00 apfu.) determined by FTIR- ATR. Chemical analyses, FTIR-ATR and crystal structure refinement of YTT and SK100-VAB allanites yielded the following crystal chemical formula: YTT: (Ca0.83Mn2+ 0.06Fe2+ 0.11)(La0.24Ce0.32Pr0.04Nd0.11Sm0.02Th0.04Ca0.21)(Al0.73Fe3+ 0.19Ti0.08)(Al0.89Fe3+ 0.11)(Fe2+ 0.22Fe3+ 0.62Mg0.16)(SiO4)Si2O7O1.6(OH)0.4, SK100-VAB: (Ca0.81Fe2+ 0.13Mn2+ 0.06)(La0.22Ce0.34Pr0.05Nd0.13Sm0.02Th0.02Ca0.22)(Al0.76Fe3+ 0.19Ti0.05)Al1.00(Fe2+ 0.73Fe3+ 0.17Mg0.10)(Si0.96Al0.04O4)Si2O7O(OH). Therefore, it is concluded that welding of the Youngest Toba Tuff caused the following post-crystallization changes to occur in YTT allanite: oxidation of Fe2+ to Fe3+, release of H2, and the concomitant replacement of OH? by O2?. These oxidation and dehydrogenation processes advanced during the welding to thereby produce oxyallanite. Oxyallanite had been reported only in laboratory studies where it was produced by heating natural allanite. Our report on natural oxyallanite suggests that it may be present in other welded silicic volcanic rocks as well. 相似文献
