We analyzed subfossil chironomids, sediment organic matter and sediment particle size data from a 1.11-m-long freeze core collected from Carleton Lake (unofficial name), located approximately 120 km north of the modern treeline. This well-dated core spans the last ca. 6,500 years. Two chironomid transfer functions were applied to infer mean July air temperatures. Our results indicated that the chironomid-inferred temperatures from this lake sediment record did not pass a significance test, suggesting that other factors in addition to temperature may have been important in structuring the chironomid community through time. Although not statistically significant, the chironomid-inferred temperatures from this site do follow a familiar pattern, with highest inferred temperatures occurring during the Holocene Thermal Maximum (~6–4 cal kyr BP), followed by a long-term cooling trend, which is reversed during the last 600 years. The largest change in the chironomid assemblage, which occurred between ca. 4,600 and 3,900 cal yr BP is possibly related to the well-documented northward advance and subsequent retreat of treeline in this region.  相似文献

Here we present new observations of two different interactions between aeolian ridges and boulder fields on Mars that provide insight into past wind conditions. First, an analysis of ridge and boulder interactions at two test sites in Proctor Crater and an additional site ~430 km to the northeast shows that ridge geometry can be affected by changes in surface roughness elements generated by boulder fields. Second, a detailed examination of some of the boulder fields found that individual boulders can generate multi-armed ‘wakes’ that have no clear proxy on Earth. The ridge/boulder dynamics suggest that transverse aeolian ridges acted as roughness during their development, indicating that they formed at a length scale greater than wind ripples. The boulder wakes seem to represent an unusual interaction between flow separation and pre-exiting ridges; why this pattern is not observed on Earth remains uncertain.  相似文献

The phase relations of primitive magnesian andesites and basaltic andesites from the Mt. Shasta region, N California have been determined over a range of pressure and temperature conditions and H2O contents. The experimental results are used to explore the influence of H2O and pressure on fractional crystallization and mantle melting behavior in subduction zone environments. At 200-MPa H2O-saturated conditions the experimentally determined liquid line of descent reproduces the compositional variation found in the Mt. Shasta region lavas. This calc-alkaline differentiation trend begins at the lowest values of FeO*/MgO and the highest SiO2 contents found in any arc magma system and exhibits only a modest increase in FeO*/MgO with increasing SiO2. We propose a two-stage process for the origin of these lavas. (1) Extensive hydrous mantle melting produces H2O-rich (>4.5--6 wt% H2O) melts that are in equilibrium with a refractory harzburgite (olivine + orthopyroxene) residue. Trace elements and H2O are contributed from a slab-derived fluid and/or melt. (2) This mantle melt ascends into the overlying crust and undergoes fractional crystallization. Crustal-level differentiation occurs under near-H2O saturated conditions producing the distinctive high SiO2 and low FeO*/MgO characteristics of these calc-alkaline andesite and dacite lavas. In a subset of Mt. Shasta region lavas, magnesian pargasitic amphibole provides evidence of high pre-eruptive H2O contents (>10 wt% H2O) and lower crustal crystallization pressures (800 MPa). Igneous rocks that possess major and trace element characteristics similar to those of the Mt. Shasta region lavas are found at Adak, Aleutians, Setouchi Belt, Japan, the Mexican Volcanic Belt, Cook Island, Andes and in Archean trondhjemite--tonalite--granodiorite suites (TTG suites). Ground water injection and sampling systems were developed for bacterial transport experiments in both homogenous and heterogeneous unconsolidated, surficial aquifers. Two types of injection systems, a large single tank and a dynamic mixing tank, were designed to deliver more than 800 L of amended ground water to the aquifer over 12 hours, without altering the ground water temperature, pH, Eh, or dissolved gas composition. Two types of multilevel samplers (MLSs) were designed and installed. Permanent MLSs performed well for the homogenous surficial aquifer, but their installation procedure promoted vertical mixing, which could obfuscate experimental data obtained from vertically stratified, heterogeneous aquifers. A novel, removable MLS was designed to fit in 2- and 4-inch wells. Expandable O-rings between each sampling port hydraulically isolated each port for sample collection when a nut was tightened at the land surface. A low-cost vacuum manifold system designed to work with both MLS designs used 50 mL centrifuge tubes to efficiently sample 12 MLS ports with one peristaltic pump head. The integrated system was developed and used during four field campaigns over a period of three years. During each campaign, more than 3000 ground water samples were collected in less than one week. This system should prove particularly useful for ground water tracer, injection, and push-pull experiments that require high-frequency and/or high-density sampling.  相似文献

A magnetospheric boundary and its associated standing-shock wave for the earth are scaled down in size to apply to Mars. A suggestion by the Mariner-IV experimenters that their magnetometer may have detected a Martian shock at 0123 UT (earth) on July 15, 1965, is accepted. The scaling procedure used previously in the case of the Mariner-II flyby of Venus on December 14, 1962, as well as in the present case of Mars is repeated but with a different model. We propose a magnetospheric boundary for the earth, which is based on a maximum radius of 22 R E suggested by Imp-1 magnetometer data. We further suggest a low value (1.2) of the adiabatic exponent, . In addition we propose the use of the interplanetary magnetoacoustic Mach number, M*, which is a combination of both Alfvén and ordinary gasdynamic Mach numbers. Our choice of values for these parameters is not unique since many such combinations exist which will show good agreement with observation. For example, the ratio of the Martian dipole moment to that for the earth is found to be 2.1 × 10–4 by our application of the hypersonic analog. This value compares very closely with 3 × 10–4 deduced as an upper bound by the Mariner-IV investigators. The present synthesis is presented as an independent calculation based on the above theoretical considerations, together with the experimenters' probable observation of a Martian shock wave.Since this paper was submitted for publication, theoretical calculations of the steady-state average magnetic induction in the transition region for an interplanetary field oriented at several angles to the velocity vector have been published by A. Y. Alksne, Planetary Space Science 15 (1967), 239–245. We excavated five trenches across the North Anatolia fault zone (NAFZ)along the Ganos fault (Gazikoy-Saros segment), which last produced surfacerupture in 1912, near Kavakkoy where the fault enters the Gulf of Saros. The trenches exposed faulted sediments in a flood-plain environment withabundant detrital charcoal and scattered land-snail shells. Twenty-tworadiocarbon dates place constraints on the ages of the exposed sediments,which range from less than a few hundred years to about 6000 years inage. In two closely spaced trenches, we identified five discrete earthquakeevent horizons in the upper 2.5 m of stratigraphy based on abruptupward termination of shear zones, folding, fissuring, and abruptstratigraphic thickening, four of which may corresponded to historicallyrecorded large regional earthquakes. The earliest of the identified eventsoccurs below an unconformity and dates to about 4 ka B.P. The morerecent four events all occurred within the past 1000–1200 years and maycorrespond to large earthquakes in A.D. 824, ca 1354, 1509, 1766 and1912 (Ambraseys and Finkel, 1987, 1991, 1995). In another trench,we identified at least two events that have occurred during the past 500years and probably correspond to the large events of 1766 and 1912. These observations support an average return period of about 250–300years for the Gazikoy-Saros segment of the NAFZ. They also suggest thatthis segment, which is bound both to the east and west by large releasingstepovers, behaves in a quasi-periodic fashion, at least for the past severalsurface ruptures.Most of the 23 mm/yr of dextral shear between Anatolia and Europeobserved by GPS occurs on the North Anatolian fault. We use18 mm/yr and the 250–300 year recurrence rate, as determined fromour trenching and the historical record, to suggest that each of theearthquakes observed in our trenches produced several meters of slip,consistent with their inferred sizes from the extent of historical damage. Considering that Istanbul has not suffered a large nearby event in theMarmara Sea since 1766, we suggest that about 4 m of strain hasaccumulated across faults in the Marmara during these past centuries. Thisis similar to the average slip in many of the large earthquakes on the NorthAnatolian fault this century. If released seismically, this could result in anearthquake in the M 7.2–M 7.6 range, similar to the August and November,1999 earthquakes east of the Marmara Sea.  相似文献

This paper presents the results of finite element (FE) analyses of shear strain localization that occurred in cohesionless soils supported by a geosynthetic‐reinforced retaining wall. The innovative aspects of the analyses include capturing of the localized deformation and the accompanying collapse mechanism using a recently developed embedded strong discontinuity model. The case study analysed, reported in previous publications, consists of a 3.5‐m tall, full‐scale reinforced wall model deforming in plane strain and loaded by surcharge at the surface to failure. Results of the analysis suggest strain localization developing from the toe of the wall and propagating upward to the ground surface, forming a curved failure surface. This is in agreement with a well‐documented failure mechanism experienced by the physical wall model showing internal failure surfaces developing behind the wall as a result of the surface loading. Important features of the analyses include mesh sensitivity studies and a comparison of the localization properties predicted by different pre‐localization constitutive models, including a family of three‐invariant elastoplastic constitutive models appropriate for frictional/dilatant materials. Results of the analysis demonstrate the potential of the enhanced FE method for capturing a collapse mechanism characterized by the presence of a failure, or slip, surface through earthen materials. We investigate the association of high-speed solar wind with coronal holes during the Skylab mission by: (1) direct comparison of solar wind and coronal X-ray data; (2) comparison of near-equatorial coronal hole area with maximum solar wind velocity in the associated streams; and (3) examination of the correlation between solar and interplanetary magnetic polarities. We find that all large near-equatorial coronal holes seen during the Skylab period were associated with high-velocity solar wind streams observed at 1 AU.Harvard College Observatory-Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory.A substantial portion of this work was done while a visiting scientist at American Science and Engineering.  相似文献
