The benthic boundary layer transport (bblt) model was developed to assess potential impact zones from drilling mud discharges from offshore oil and gas drilling. The model focuses on the drift, dispersion and concentration levels of the suspended fraction of the drilling mud fines in the benthic boundary layer with the assumption of a spatially homogeneous environment. The current version of the model includes a wave boundary layer, a breakup module for drilling mud flocs, a dose–response module for scallops, and a graphical user interface (GUI). The GUI was written in Java which makes the code largely platform independent. Simulations of suspended barite concentration near Sable Island on the Scotian Shelf during drilling in the fall of 1999 reproduce the very low concentrations (generally less than 1 μg L−1) observed during the Environmental Effects Monitoring program. However, the simulations also exhibited concentrations in excess of the no-effects concentration for scallops (100 μg L−1) prior to the sampling program. The model estimates that the potential impact on scallops in the vicinity of the drilling is a few days of lost growth over scales of a few kilometers.  相似文献

A method is proposed for calculating the equivalent hydraulic conductivity (EHC) within a finite difference block (FDB). Application of the constant‐flux assumption of Darcy's Law, the EHC equals to the integration of effective hydraulic conductivity (Kw) as a function of pressure head (hw) divided by the head difference at the ends of the FDB. Error analysis show that the constant‐flux (CF) EHC estimates are better than those computed by the commonly used arithmetic‐mean (AM), geometric‐mean (GM), and harmonic‐mean (HM) techniques. CF EHC results are even more superior at larger interblock head difference situations. Simulations of water infiltration experiments show that simulations using the CF EHC or AM or GM weighting technique have only slight difference while applying the Neumann type boundary condition at the ground surface. In case of the Dirichlet type boundary condition, however, the CF EHC is superior to the other two in correctly estimating the depth of infiltration while enlarging the grid size. Therefore, it is recommended to adopt the CF EHC with a larger grid size to the more stable and more efficient results. Copyright © 2007 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

We present time-series echelle spectra of the Paβ line of the T Tauri star SU Aur, observed over three consecutive nights. The line shows strong variability (∼10 per cent) over the velocity range 100–420 km s−1 in the red broad absorption component, and weaker variability (∼2 per cent) over the velocity range  −200–0 km s−1  in the blue wing. The variability in the velocity range  −200–0 km s−1  is correlated with that in  200–400 km s−1  , and the variability in these velocity ranges anticorrelates with that in  0–100 km s−1  . The mean spectrum from the second night shows the suggestion of a blueshifted absorption component at about  −150 km s−1  , similar to that found in the Hα and Hβ lines. We find the position of the subpeak in the red absorption component changes steadily with time, and its motion modulates at half the rotational period. We also find that the modulation of the line equivalent width is possibly associated with a half and a third of the rotational period, which is consistent with the surface Doppler images of SU Aur. Radiative transfer models of a rotationally modulated Paβ line, produced in the shock-heated magnetospheric accretion flow, are also presented. Models with a magnetic dipole offset reproduce the overall characteristics of the observed line variability, including the line equivalent width and the motion of the subpeak in the red absorption trough.  相似文献

This study demonstrates the use of spatially downscaled, monthly general circulation model (GCM) rainfall and temperature data to drive the established HyMOD hydrological model to evaluate the prospective effects of climate change on the fluvial run‐off of the River Derwent basin in the UK. The evaluation results of this monthly hydrological model using readily available, monthly GCM data are consistent with studies on nearby catchments employing high‐temporal resolution data, indicating that useful hydro‐climatic planning studies may be possible using standard datasets and modest computational resources. HyMOD was calibrated against 5 km2 gridded UK Climate Projections dataset data and then driven using monthly spatially interpolated (~5 km2) outputs from Hadley Centre Coupled Model, version 3 and the Canadian Centre for Climate Modelling and Analysis for Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change Special Report on Emissions Scenarios (IPCC‐SRES) A2a and B2a covering the 2020s, 2050s and 2080s. Results for both GCMs project a decrease in annual run‐off in both GCM models and scenarios with higher values in the summer/autumn months, whereas an increase in the later winter months. Both Hadley Centre Coupled Model, version 3 and the Canadian Centre for Climate Modelling and Analysis show higher ranges of uncertainty during the winter season with higher values of run‐off associated with December in all three simulation periods and two scenarios. A seasonal comparison of run‐off simulations shows that both GCMs give similar results in summer and autumn, whereas disparities due to GCM uncertainties are more conspicuous in winter and spring. In this study, both the GCMs under A2a scenario have demonstrated the high possibility of time shift in monthly average peak run‐offs in the Derwent River by 2080s in comparison with the early 21st century. The major-ion (Mg2+, Ca2+, Na+, K+, , and Cl) chemistry of Cretaceous seawater was determined from analyses of seawater-derived brines preserved as fluid inclusions in marine halites. Fluid inclusions in primary halite from three evaporite deposits were analyzed by the environmental scanning electron microscopy (ESEM) X-ray energy dispersive spectrometry (EDS) technique: the Early Cretaceous (Aptian, 121.0-112.2 Ma) of the Sergipe basin, Brazil and the Congo basin, Republic of the Congo, and the Early to Late Cretaceous (Albian to Cenomanian, 112.2-93.5 Ma) of the Khorat Plateau, Laos, and Thailand. The fluid inclusions in halite indicate that Cretaceous seawater was enriched several fold in Ca2+, depleted in , Na+, and Mg2+, and had lower Na+/Cl, Mg2+/Ca2+, and Mg2+/K+ ratios compared to modern seawater. Elevated Ca2+ concentrations, with Ca2+ >  at the point of gypsum saturation, allowed Cretaceous seawater to evolve into Mg2+-Ca2+-Na+-K+-Cl brines lacking measurable .The major-ion composition of Cretaceous seawater was modeled from fluid inclusion chemistries for the Aptian and the Albian-Cenomanian. Aptian seawater was extreme in its Ca2+ enrichment, more than three times higher than present day seawater, with a Mg2+/Ca2+ ratio of 1.1-1.3. Younger, Albian-Cenomanian seawater had lower Ca2+ concentrations, and a higher Mg2+/Ca2+ ratio of 1.2-1.7. Cretaceous (Aptian) seawater has the lowest Mg2+/Ca2+ ratios so far documented in Phanerozoic seawater from fluid inclusions in halite, and within the range chemically favorable for precipitation of low-Mg calcite ooids and cements. Results from halite fluid inclusions, together with Mg2+/Ca2+ ratios measured from echinoderm and rudist calcite, all indicate that Early Cretaceous seawater (Hauterivian, Barremian, Aptian, and Albian) had lower Mg2+/Ca2+ ratios than Late Cretaceous seawater (Coniacian, Santonian, and Campanian). Low Aptian-Albian Mg2+/Ca2+ seawater ratios coincide with negative excursions of 87Sr/86Sr ratios and δ34SSO4, and peak Cretaceous ocean crust production rates, all of which suggests a link between seawater chemistry and midocean ridge hydrothermal brine flux.  相似文献

To measure the onset of mass transfer in eccentric binaries, we have developed a two-phase smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) technique. Mass transfer is important in the evolution of close binaries, and a key issue is to determine the separation at which mass transfer begins. The circular case is well understood and can be treated through the use of the Roche formalism. To treat the eccentric case, we use a newly developed two-phase system. The body of the donor star is made up from high-mass water particles, whilst the atmosphere is modelled with low-mass oil particles. Both sets of particles take part fully in SPH interactions. To test the technique, we model circular mass-transfer binaries containing a  0.6 M  donor star and a  1 M  white dwarf; such binaries are thought to form cataclysmic variable (CV) systems. We find that we can reproduce a reasonable CV mass-transfer rate, and that our extended atmosphere gives a separation that is too large by approximately 16 per cent, although its pressure scale height is considerably exaggerated. We use the technique to measure the semimajor axis required for the onset of mass transfer in binaries with a mass ratio of   q = 0.6  and a range of eccentricities. Comparing to the value obtained by considering the instantaneous Roche lobe at pericentre, we find that the radius of the star required for mass transfer to begin decreases systematically with increasing eccentricity.  相似文献

The land/sea warming contrast is a phenomenon of both equilibrium and transient simulations of climate change: large areas of the land surface at most latitudes undergo temperature changes whose amplitude is more than those of the surrounding oceans. Using idealised GCM experiments with perturbed SSTs, we show that the land/sea contrast in equilibrium simulations is associated with local feedbacks and the hydrological cycle over land, rather than with externally imposed radiative forcing. This mechanism also explains a large component of the land/sea contrast in transient simulations as well. We propose a conceptual model with three elements: (1) there is a spatially variable level in the lower troposphere at which temperature change is the same over land and sea; (2) the dependence of lapse rate on moisture and temperature causes different changes in lapse rate upon warming over land and sea, and hence a surface land/sea temperature contrast; (3) moisture convergence over land predominantly takes place at levels significantly colder than the surface; wherever moisture supply over land is limited, the increase of evaporation over land upon warming is limited, reducing the relative humidity in the boundary layer over land, and hence also enhancing the land/sea contrast. The non-linearity of the Clausius–Clapeyron relationship of saturation specific humidity to temperature is critical in (2) and (3). We examine the sensitivity of the land/sea contrast to model representations of different physical processes using a large ensemble of climate model integrations with perturbed parameters, and find that it is most sensitive to representation of large-scale cloud and stomatal closure. We discuss our results in the context of high-resolution and Earth-system modelling of climate change.  相似文献
