Authigenic carbonates were sampled in methane-enriched piston core sediments collected from gas venting sites on the western continental slope of the Ulleung Basin, East Sea of Korea. Multidisciplinary investigations on these carbonates, including the scanning electronic microscope (SEM) observations and mineralogical-geochemical compositions, were carried out to identify the carbon and oxygen sources and the forming mechanism of these carbonates. The authigenic carbonates from the study area correspond to semi-consolidated, compact concretions or nodules ranging from 2 to 9 cm in size. X-ray diffraction and electron microprobe analyses showed that most of the sampled carbonate concretions were composed of almost purely authigenic high-Mg calcite (10.7–14.3 mol% MgCO3). Characteristically, microbial structures such as filaments and rods, which were probably associated with the authigenic minerals, were abundantly observed within the carbonate matrix. The carbonates were strongly depleted in δ13C (−33.85‰ to −39.53‰ Peedee Belemnite (PDB)) and were enriched in δ18O (5.16–5.60‰ PDB), indicating that the primary source of carbon is mainly derived from the anaerobic oxidation of methane. Such methane probably originated from the destabilization of the underlying gas hydrates as strongly supporting from the enriched 18O levels. Furthermore, the strongly depleted δ13C values (−60.7‰ to −61.6‰ PDB) of the sediment void gases demonstrate that the majority of the gas venting at the Ulleung Basin is microbial methane by CO2 reduction. This study provides another example for the formation mechanism of methane-derived authigenic carbonates associated with gas-hydrate decomposition in gas-seeping pockmark environments.  相似文献

The main objective of this study is to develop algorithms for calculating the air surface temperature (AST). This study also aims to analyze and investigate the effects of greenhouse gases (GHGs) on the AST value in Peninsular Malaysia. Multiple linear regression is used to achieve the objectives of the study. Peninsular Malaysia has been selected as the research area because it is among the regions of tropical Southeast Asia with the greatest humidity, pockets of heavy pollution, rapid economic growth, and industrialization. The predicted AST was highly correlated (R = 0.783) with GHGs for the 6-year data (2003–2008). Comparisons of five stations in 2009 showed close agreement between the predicted AST and the observed AST from AIRS, especially in the wet season (within 1.3 K). The in situ data ranged from 1 to 2 K. Validation results showed that AST (R = 0.776–0.878) has values nearly the same as the observed AST from AIRS. We found that O3 during the wet season was indicated by a strongly positive beta coefficient (0.264–0.992) with AST. The CO2 yields a reasonable relationship with temperature with low to moderate beta coefficient (?0.065 to 0.238). The O3, CO2, and environmental variables experienced different seasonal fluctuations that depend on weather conditions and topography. The concentration of gases and pollution were the highest over industrial zones and overcrowded cities, and the dry season was more polluted compared with the wet season. These results indicate the advantage of using the satellite AIRS data and a correlation analysis to investigate the effect of atmospheric GHGs on AST over Peninsular Malaysia. An algorithm that is capable of retrieving Peninsular Malaysian AST in all weather conditions with total uncertainties ranging from 1 to 2 K was developed.  相似文献

An analysis method for slug tests performed in a partially penetrating well within a vertical cutoff wall is presented. A steady‐state shape factor for evaluating hydraulic conductivity of the material within the wall was derived by applying the method of images to the previously developed analytical solution of Zlotnik et al. (2010) for an infinite aquifer. Two distinct boundary conditions were considered: constant‐head boundary for the case of direct contact between the wall and the aquifer, and no‐flux boundary representing an impermeable filter cake on the sides of the wall. The constant‐head and no‐flux boundary conditions yield significantly higher and lower shape factors, respectively, than those for the infinite aquifer. Consequently the conventional line‐fitting method for slug test analysis would yield an inaccurate estimate of the hydraulic conductivity of a vertical cutoff wall.  相似文献

Based on a δ18O chronology,rare earth elements(REE) and other typical elements in sediments from core MD06-3047 in the western Philippine Sea were analyzed to constrain the provenances of the sediments and investigate quantitative changes in the Asian eolian input to the study area over the last 700 ka.Among the competing processes that might affect REE compositions,sediment provenance is the most important one.Provenance analysis suggests that the study sediments have two provenance end-members;local volcanic sources are dominant,and eolian dust from the Asian continent has a smaller contribution.During glacial periods,eolian input to the western Philippine Sea was enhanced.In contrast,material supply from local volcanics increased during interglacial periods.Changes in eolian input to the study area were probably related to the strength of the East Asian winter monsoon(EAWM) as well as aridity in the Asian continent on an orbital time scale,and were partly influenced by local control factors on shorter time scales.Therefore,we propose that the present study expands the application of the REE-based method for quantitatively estimating the eolian component from the mid-latitude northern Pacific to the low-latitude western Pacific.Additionally,the study preliminarily confirms the influence of EAWM-transported eolian material on sedimentation in the western Philippine Sea since 700 ka.  相似文献

Land Data Assimilation Systems have been developed to generate the surface initial conditions such as soil moisture and temperature for better prediction of weather and climate. We have constructed Korea Land Data Assimilation System (KLDAS) based on an uncoupled land surface modeling framework that integrates high-resolution in-situ observation, satellite data, land surface information from the WRF Preprocessing System (WPS) and the MODIS land products over the East Asia. To present better surface conditions, the KLDAS is driven by atmospheric forcing data from the in-situ rainfall gauges and satellite. In this study, we 1) briefly introduce the KLDAS, 2) evaluate the meteorological states near the surface and the surface fluxes reproduced by the KLDAS against the in-situ observation, and then 3) examine the performance of the mesoscale model initialized by the KLDAS. We have generated a 5-year, 10 km, hourly atmospheric forcing dataset for use in KLDAS operating across East Asia. The KLDAS has effectively reproduced the observed patterns of soil moisture, soil temperature, and surface fluxes. Further scrutiny reveals that the numerical simulations incorporating the KLDAS outputs show better agreement in both the simulated near-surface conditions and rainfall distribution over the Korean Peninsula, compared to those without the KLDAS.  相似文献

This paper investigates the impact of the Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO) on the diurnal cycle of rainfall over the western Maritime Continent during the austral summer. For this purpose, cyclostationary empirical orthogonal function analysis is applied to the tropical rainfall measuring mission rain rate and the Japanese Reanalysis-25 data for the period 1998–2008. The real-time multivariate MJO index by Wheeler and Hendon (Mon Wea Rev 132:1917–1932, 2004) is adopted to define the intensity and the phase of MJO. It is demonstrated that the hourly maximum rain rate over the domain tends to increase when convectively active phase of MJO approaches the Maritime Continent. In contrast, the hourly maximum rain rate tends to decrease when convectively suppressed phase of MJO resides over the region. The changes in the rain rate due to MJO differ over the ocean and the land. This difference is the greatest when the MJO is in the mature stage. Throughout the day during this stage, terrestrial rain rates show minimum values while diurnally varying oceanic rain rates record maximum values. Thus, precipitation becomes more intense in the morning over the Java Sea and is weakened in the evening over Borneo and Sumatra during the mature stage of MJO. During the decaying stage of MJO over the Maritime Continent, the diurnal cycle of precipitation weakens significantly over the ocean but only weakly over land. Analyses suggest that the anomalous lower level winds accompanied by MJO interact with the monsoonal flow over the Maritime Continent. Westerlies induced by MJO convection in the mature stage are superimposed on the monsoonal westerlies over the equator and increase wind speed mainly over the Java Sea due to the blocking effect of orography. Mountainous islands induce flow bifurcation, causing near-surface winds to converge mainly over the oceanic channels between two islands. As a result, heat flux release from the ocean to the atmosphere is enhanced by the increased surface wind resulting in instability as described in the wind-induced surface heat exchange mechanism. This may contribute to heavy rainfall over the Java Sea in the morning during the mature stage. On the other hand, convergence and vertical velocity over the islands, which play important roles in inducing nighttime rainfall, tend to be weak in the evening during the mature stage of MJO. Strong westerlies arising from MJO and the seasonal flow during the mature stage tend to interrupt convergence over islands. This interruption of convergence by MJO gives rise to decreased rain rates over the land regions.  相似文献

The influence of clay dispersion method on dewatering behaviour of a run-of-mine bentonite was examined to better understand the roles of calcium–sodium ion exchange and overall electrolyte concentration on the suppression of swelling and subsequent stabilisation of the clay. As with previous work, controlled dispersion of the clay directly into a swelling suppressing environment was observed to yield order of magnitude improvements in dewatering behaviour [de Kretser, R.G., Scales, P.J. and Boger, D.V., 1997. Improving clay-based tailings disposal: a case study on coal tailings. AIChE Journal. 43 (7), 1894–1903.]. The calcium ion, even after normalisation for its valence, yielded significantly better clay stabilisation performance than the sodium ion indicating the greater benefit afforded via divalent ion-exchange driven controlled dispersion. However the results also highlighted a synergistic effect of the double layer suppression effect on the efficacy of ion-exchange mediated controlled dispersion through simultaneous swelling suppression and structure preservation during the transient process of ion exchange on hydration. Studies of controlled dispersion in dual ion, Na+ and Ca2+, systems illustrated that although the efficacy of controlled dispersion deteriorated with an increase in the Na+ to Ca2+ ratio, even small amounts of calcium character could generate significant improvements in dewaterability over the pure sodium case. This result was relevant in terms of defining an operational window for the commonly used, but sparingly soluble calcium source, gypsum where the low deliverable calcium level could be more than offset by the controlled dispersion benefits of maintaining a higher overall salinity level. Based on the results presented, the potential impact of practical implementation of a controlled dispersion framework within a mineral processing operation was illustrated via numerical modelling of the operation of a steady state thickener.  相似文献

Tarap peel (TP) and oxalic-acid-modified Tarap peel (TP-OX) were used to remove brilliant green (BG) dye from aqueous solution. Surface modification of TP suggested that functional groups such as carboxyl, hydroxyl and amino were involved in the adsorption of BG onto TP. Parameters such as effects of pH, contact time, ionic strength, initial dye concentration and temperature were included to study the adsorption of BG onto TP and TP-OX. Adsorption isotherm models were used to investigate the adsorption process, while kinetics models were used to provide insight into the adsorption mechanisms. Optimised contact time of 2 h with no pH adjustment was used. Adsorption of BG onto TP was best fitted to the Freundlich model, while experimental data for TP-OX are best described by the Tempkin model. The maximum adsorption capacities were determined as 174 and 275 mg g?1 for TP and TP-OX, respectively. Thermodynamics study indicated the endothermic nature of adsorptions of BG onto both adsorbents. According to kinetics study, the adsorption mechanisms on both adsorbents followed pseudo-second-order model, and film diffusion might have major role in the adsorption process.  相似文献

Diatom densities in the surface water and dinoflagellate cysts in bottom sediments of Gwangyang Bay were studied to determine changes in the phytoplankton community structure in response to anthropogenic eutrophication and to assess the use of dinoflagellate cysts as indicators of coastal eutrophication. Our results show that, in nutrient-enriched environments, diatoms are particularly benefited from the nutrients supplied and, as a consequence, heterotrophic dinoflagellates that feed on the diatoms can be more abundant than autotrophic dinoflagellates. In short-core sediment records, a marked shift in autotrophic–heterotrophic dinoflagellate cyst compositions occurred at a depth of approximately 9–10 cm corresponding to the timing of the 1970s industrialization around Gwangyang Bay. This tentatively indicates that diatom and dinoflagellate communities here have undergone a considerable change mainly due to increased nutrient loadings from both domestic sewage effluent and industrial pollution. Our study suggests a possible potential use of dinoflagellate cysts in providing retrospective information on the long-term effects of coastal eutrophication.  相似文献
