The petrology of the highly phyric two-pyroxene andesitic to dacitic pyroclastic rocks of the November 13, 1985 eruption of Nevado del Ruiz, Colombia, reveals evidence of: (1) increasingly fractionated bulk compositions with time; (2) tapping of a small magma chamber marginally zoned in regard to H2O contents (1 to 4%), temperature (960–1090°C), and amount of residual melt (35 to 65%); (3) partial melting and assimilation of degassed zones in the hotter less dense interior of the magma chamber; (4) probable heating, thermal disruption and mineralogic and compositional contamination of the magma body by basaltic magma “underplating”; and (5) crustal contamination of the magmas during ascent and within the magma chamber. Near-crater fall-back or “spill-over” emitted in the middle of the eruptive sequence produced a small pyroclastic flow that became welded in its central and basal portions because of ponding and thus heat conservation on the flat glaciated summit near the Arenas crater. The heterogeneity of Ruiz magmas may be related to the comparatively small volume (0.03 km3) of the eruption, nearly ten times less than the 0.2 km3 of the Plinian phase of Mount St. Helens, and probable steep thermal and PH2O gradients of a small source magma chamber, estimated at 300 m long and 100 m wide for an assumed ellipsoidal shape.  相似文献

High cultural enrichment factors are found for Hg (13×), Pb (22.1×), and other potentially toxic metals (e.g., Sn, Zn, Cu, Ag) in the upper 20 cm of sediment cores from the southeastern Ginka subbasin of Manzalah lagoon, Nile delta, Egypt. Cores from other areas of the lagoon show little metal loading. Metal loading followed the closure of the Aswan High Dam, the availability of abundant cheap electricity, and the development of major power-based industries. Industrial wastes containing potentially toxic metals are dumped into the Nile delta drain system. The load carried by Bahr El-Baqar drain discharges into the Ginka subbasin, which acts as a sink and results in metal loading of the sediment deposited there. Further development of aquaculture in this subbasin, of food-stuff agriculture on recently reclaimed lagoon bottom, or where irrigation waters come from Bahr El-Baqar drain or its discharge should be halted or strictly limited until potentially toxic metals in the drain waters and sediment are removed and polluted input drastically reduced. This environmental assessment of heavy metals in aquaculture or agriculture development should extend to other waterbodies in the northern Nile delta, particularly Idku lagoon and lake Mariut, where industrial metal-bearing wastes discharge into the waterbodies.  相似文献

Tropical rainforest canopy trees that have large projected areas of upwardly inclined branches are capable of funnelling large volumes of rainwater down their trunks. During periods of prolonged heavy rainfall on Mount Bellenden Ker in northeast Queensland, Australia, stemflow volumes were found to be as much as two orders of magnitude greater than the volume of incident rainfall expected in a rain gauge occupying an area equal to the trunk basal area. Stemflow totals ranging from 6000 to 70000 litres were generated by individual trees from 7800 mm of rainfall over two successive wet seasons. The combination of high intensity rainfall and the funnelling effect results in significant quantities of infiltration-excess at the ground surface. Stemflow fluxes as high as 31.4 cm3 min?1 per cm2 of basal area (i.e. the equivalent of 314 mm min?1) were recorded when rainfall intensity was only 2 mm min?1. The mean infiltration capacity of the topsoil was determined to be 6.2 mm min?1. The areas over which the stemflow would have had to spread in order to infiltrate were computed to be as much as 3 m2 around the bases of individual canopy trees. Approximations of the distances that the infiltration-excess would have travelled away from the tree bases were calculated by assuming that the infiltration area either expands radially outward in the form of an annulus or extends straight downslope from the tree base.  相似文献

A microcomputer system can be a powerful interpretive tool in the hands of the explorationist, particularly for his geochemical surveys. Data entry and plotting of site parameters and/or trace-element values on 18 cm × 26 cm maps, on site, can be carried out at reasonable cost with available technology. Plotting characteristics of some microcomputer systems are the equal to those of mainframes.All geochemical data, even for surveys of 38 elements with up to four sample media, can be displayed by a large plotter as ten single-element plots (18 cm × 26 cm) on each of four mapsheets. Plotting 2000 points for ten elements requires five hours and can be scheduled for overnight operation. Elements showing meaningful variations can be replotted subsequently at large scales using character and/or symbol formats. Examples of geochemical plots are given for soil- and stream-sediment surveys and for drill-core lithogeochemical studies.The microcomputer can calculate statistics; however, large numbers of such calculations are slow. Transfer of data to a mainframe computer allows access to fast, sophisticated statistical software. The mainframe can also provide high-quality laser-printed paper copy and can be used for fail-safe archiving.  相似文献

The October, 1902, eruption of Santa Maria Volcano, Guatemala, was one of the largest this century. It was preceded by a great earthquake on April 19 centered at the volcano, as well as numerous other major earthquakes. The 18–20 hour-long plinian eruption on October 25 produced a column at least 28 km high, reaching well into the stratosphere.The airfall pumice deposit covered more than 1.2 million km2 with a trace of ash and was only two meters thick at the vent. White dacitic pumice, dark gray scoriaceous basalt (with physically and chemically mixed intermediate pumice) and loose crystals of plagioclase, hornblende, hypersthene, biotite and magnetite make up the juvenile components of the deposit. Lithic fragments are of volcanic, plutonic, and metamorphic origin. The plinian deposit is a fine-grained, crystal-rich, single pumice fall unit and shows inverse grading. Mapping of the deposit gives a volume of 8.3 km3 within the one mm isopach. Crystal concentration studies show that the true volume erupted was at least 20 km3 (equivalent to 8.5 km3 of dense dacite) and that 90% of the ejecta was less than 2 mm in diameter.The plinian volume eruption rate averaged 1.2 × 105 m3s−1 and the average gas muzzle velocity of the column exceeded 270 ms−1. A total of 8.3 × 1018 J of energy were released by the eruption. A knowledge of both theoretically derived eruption parameters and contemporary information allows a detailed analysis of eruption mechanisms.This eruption was the major stratospheric aerosol injection in the 1902–1903 period. However, mid- to low- latitude northern hemisphere temperature deviation data for the years following the eruption show no significant temperature decrease. This may be explained by the sulfur-poor nature of dacite magmas, suggesting that volatile composition, rather than mass of volatiles, is the controlling parameter in climatic response to explosive eruptions.  相似文献

The Precambrian is the longest and least understood period in the history of our planet. There is no direct evidence which bears on the primitive Earth environment, the synthesis of organic compounds and the origin of life on our planet, since the geological record only goes back to 3.8 Ga ago. To overcome this deficiency it is necessary to extrapolate backwards from 3.8 Ga ago to the time when the Earth was formed, 4.6 Ga ago, and also make use of additional scientific approaches. These include models of the solar nebula and planet formation, comparative observations with other cosmic environments, and experimental simulation studies under plausible primitive Earth conditions, particularly in regard to the prebiological synthesis of organic compounds. A large number of interstellar organic molecules have been detected by radioastronomy in the interstellar medium, particularly in places where other solar systems may be in the process of formation. It is remarkable that 10 of these molecules are known to be the precursors of the most important biochemical monomers. Furthermore, some of these monomers, e.g., amino acids, purines and pyrimidines, have also been detected in carbonaceous chondrites, which were presumably synthesized on the parent bodies of the meteorites or possibly in the solar nebula. Comparative studies on the terrestrial planets indicate that their primitive atmospheres resulted primarily from outgassing of CO2 and other partially oxidized (CO, N2) and reduced (H2, CH4, NH3, H2S) volatiles. Furthermore, comets and meteorites are thought to have made a significant contribution to the reduced carbon precursors for the prebiological synthesis of biochemical compounds. A brief review of the experiments carried out in the laboratory under possible primitive Earth conditions shows that amino acids, purines, pyrimidines, monosaccharides, fatty acids and other compounds are readily obtained using different energy sources. However, the formation of oligopeptides, oligonucleotides and phospholipids requires more restrictive conditions. They have been synthesized by means of condensing agents, such as cyanamide, as well as by heating under relatively dry conditions of less than 100°C. Experiments have been carried out on the formation of liposomes from prebiotically synthesized phospholipids. Also, using 2-methylimidazolide derivatives of nucleotides, the template directed synthesis of polynucleotides has been demonstrated. In the latter experiments a high fidelity of complementary base pairing has been observed, which if further improved would approach that of enzyme catalyzed replication. However, it is not known how the prebiologically synthesized polymers became organized into a self-replicating system. At any rate the first living systems were probably very rudimentary heterotrophic micro-organisms which used organic compounds from the environment for both cell components and energy. They were probably followed by fermenters and eventually by autotrophic CO2 reducing micro-organisms similar to the methanogenic and photosynthetic bacteria.  相似文献

Records of very damaging snowstorms, those causing more than $25 million in property losses, across the United States were assessed to define the spatial and temporal dimensions of the nation’s snowstorm activity during 1949–2000. In this 52-year period 155 snowstorms occurred and caused losses totaling $21.6 billion (2000 dollars). The northeastern U.S. had the nation’s maximum storm occurrences (79 storms), total losses ($7.3 billion), and storm intensity. Two-thirds of all U.S. losses occurred in the Northeast, Southeast, and Central climate regions, and storm occurrences and losses were least in the western U.S. The incidence of storms peaked in the 1976–1985 period and exhibited no up or down trend during 1949–2000. However, national losses had a significant upward time trend, as did storm sizes and intensity. States with the greatest number of storms were New York (62) and Pennsylvania (58) with only 2 storms in Montana, Idaho, and Utah. Storm losses in the northeastern and southeastern U.S. had U-shaped time distributions with flat time trends for 1949–2000, but losses in the western regions and Deep South had distinct upward trends in losses and storm size. More than 90% of all storm losses in the western U.S. occurred after 1980. These findings indicating increased losses over time reflect that a rapidly growing population and vulnerability of more property at risk have been major factors affecting losses, and the lack of a change over time in snowstorm incidences suggests no change in climate during 1949–2000.  相似文献
