The 1957–1958 eruption of Capelinhos, Faial island, Azores, involved three periods of surtseyan, hydromagmatic activity: two in 1957 and one in 1958. Deposits from this eruption are exposed both in sea cliffs cut into the flanks of the tuff cone and more distally >1 km from the vent. Five lithofacies are identified: lithofacies I is composed of even thickness beds with laterally continuous internal stratigraphy and is interpreted to have been formed by fallout. Lithofacies II consists of beds with internally discontinuous lenses, and has sand-wave structures that increase in abundance toward the outer margins of the tuff cone. This lithofacies is interpreted as having been deposited from pyroclastic surges. Lithofacies III is composed of mantle-bedded deposits with laterally discontinuous internal stratigraphy. This lithofacies is interpreted to have been formed by hybrid processes where fallout of tephra occurred simultaneously with pyroclastic surges. In the outer flanks of the tuff cone, lithofacies III grades laterally into fallout beds of lithofacies I. Lithofacies IV consists of alternating beds of coarse ash aggregates and non-aggregated fine ash, and is particularly well developed in distal regions. Some of this facies was formed by fallout. Alternating beds also occur plastered against obstacles up to 2 km from the vent, indicating an origin from wet pyroclastic surges. The orientation of plastered tephra indicates that the surges were deflected by topography as they decelerated. The distinction between surge and fallout in distal regions is uncertain because wind-drifted fallout and decelerating surge clouds can generate similar deposits. Lithofacies V consists of scoria lapilli beds interpreted to be fallout from hawaiian-style fire-fountaining in the later stages of the eruption. Juvenile pyroclasts within hydromagmatic deposits are predominantly poorly vesicular (25–60% of clasts <30% vesicles). However, on both micro- and macroscopic scales, there is a wide range in clast vesicularity (up to 70% vesicles) indicating that, although fragmentation was predominantly hydromagmatic, vesiculation and magmatic-volatile-driven fragmentation operated simultaneously.  相似文献

The sediments underlying the hot brine pool of the Atlantis II Deep, a localised area of geothermal activity in the Red Sea, comprise a diversity of facies characterised by combinations of one or more of five species assemblages, sulphide, sulphate, silicate, oxide and carbonate, each including several mineral phases. The silicate mineral assemblage is dominated by geothermal authigenic smectites. Previous studies of these smectites have reported iron-rich varieties only, nontronite in particular, and only one environment of formation. In three cores from the Southwest Basin of the Atlantis II Deep, of the present study, three smectites comprising two species have been distinguished [10,21] evidently from three different environments of formation. Two of these smectites are nontronites, one from sulphide/silicate/amorphous facies, the other from silicate/carbonate/oxide facies. The third is a montmorillonite/beidellite from sulphate/sulphide/silicate/oxide facies. The oxygen isotopic compositions of samples of the three smectites have been determined from which formation temperatures have been calculated. Six samples of the “anoxic” nontronite have formation temperatures in the range 90–140°C. A single sample of the “oxic” nontronite has a formation temperature of about 80°C. Four samples of the montmorillonite/beidellite have formation temperatures in the range 160–200°C.The formation temperature range of the two nontronites is intermediate between the temperature of the brine at or prior to discharge (up to 250°C [12]) and the temperature of the brine pool in the Deep (about 50–60°C [13,14]). The nontronite formation temperature range reflects genesis by combination of isotopically light silica supplied by the incoming brine and isotopically heavier iron oxyhydroxide settling from the upper layers of the brine pool. Evidently, the “anoxic” nontronite forms at greater depth (hotter) in the brine pool than the “oxic” nontronite resulting in a relatively greater contribution from silica but diminished contribution from iron oxyhydroxide in the former compared to the latter. The wide range of the formation temperatures for the “anoxic” nontronite is related to the different actual locations of the samples in the sulphide/silicate/amorphous facies. The formation temperature range of the montmorillonite/beidellite is approaching the estimated temperature of the brine at or prior to discharge. The montmorillonite/beidellite formation temperature range reflects genesis by combination of isotopically light silica and aluminium, both supplied by the incoming brine, at the site of an active discharge vent. The wide range of the formation temperatures for the montmorillonite/beidellite may in part reflect a possible thermal event at the brine source, likely to have occurred during deposition of the sulphate/sulphide/silicate/oxide facies and which, it appears, has contributed to the formation of this facies [10,20].  相似文献

The effects of wide availability of small, cheap, portable minicomputers on geography teaching and on the content of geography syllabuses in higher education are considered. Simulation, visual display, and computer aided instruction are identified as the features of minicomputers that are most likely to affect teaching methods, while the need to appreciate and to use computers will lead to a greater emphasis on training geography students in the skills required. Four simple examples of the use of the minicomputer in geography teaching are given, and the final section of the paper contains some recommendations for future developments.  相似文献

Seven packrat midden samples make possible a comparison between the modern and late Pleistocene vegetation in Kings Canyon on the western side of the southern Sierra Nevada. One modern sample contains macrofossils and pollen derived from the present-day oak-chaparral vegetation. Macrofossils from the six late Pleistocene samples record a mixed coniferous forest dominated by the xerophytic conifers Juniperus occidentalis, Pinus cf. ponderosa, and P. monophylla. The pollen spectra of these Pleistocene middens are dominated by Pinus sp., Taxodiaceae-Cupressaceae-Taxaceae (TCT), and Artemisia sp. Mesophytic conifers are represented by low macrofossil concentrations. Sequoiadendron giganteum is represented by a few pollen grains in the full glacial. Edaphic control and snow dispersal are the most likely causes of these mixed assemblages. The dominant macrofossils record a more xeric plant community than those that now occur on similar substrates at higher elevations or latitudes in the Sierra Nevada. These assemblages suggest that late Wisconsin climates were cold with mean annual precipitation not necessarily greater than modern values. This conclusion supports a model of low summer ablation allowing for the persistence of the glaciers at higher elevations during the late Wisconsin. The records in these middens also suggest that S. giganteum grew at lower elevations along the western side of the range and that P. monophylla was more widely distributed in cismontane California during the Pleistocene.  相似文献

Common eiders nesting in the Baltic Sea are exposed to generally high levels of contaminants including potentially genotoxic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and organochlorines. Blood samples were collected from eiders at eight sites in the Baltic Sea and two sites in the Beaufort Sea. DNA content variation was estimated using the flow cytometric method, and subsequently utilized as a biomarker of genetic damage. We observed no significant differences in genetic damage among populations within either the Baltic or Beaufort Seas. However, eider populations from the Baltic Sea had significantly elevated estimates of genetic damage compared to populations from the Beaufort Sea.  相似文献

Results are presented for a series of experiments investigating effects which can influence the interpretation of data from ionisation-based dust detectors carried on spacecraft. First, the variation of the impact ionisation yield with angle of impact was studied for impacts of iron microparticles onto gold at speeds of 1-. The angle of incidence was from 0° (normal incidence) to 80° (glancing incidence). Little or no variation was observed at angles up to 60°, but at 80° the total impact ionisation signal was around an order of magnitude lower than at smaller angles. In addition, the fast rising component of the ionisation signal rise time showed no variation with impact angle, but the total signal rise time showed a steady decrease. The effect of secondary impact ionisation resulting from particle impacts on detector side walls was also studied. Iron microparticles were fired on to an aluminium target at various angles, and the impact ionisation signal on a nearby gold target was measured. It was found that ionisation signals were observed on the gold target, and that these were very similar in appearance to those observed in direct impacts. The effect of reduction in particle charge on an impact ionisation signal was investigated. Iron microparticles were fired on to a gold target after passing through a thin film which reduced the charge which was used to accelerate them. It was found that there was a measurable drop in ionisation signal in the reduced-charge case. The empirical relation IIONISATION=1.67×10−9QPARTICLE0.35 (units of C) was found. This implies there is a component in the observed ionisation signal that is not related to the impact. To test this, charged tungsten carbide particles were dropped at very low velocity onto a replica of a dust detector used in space whilst placed in a vacuum chamber. Ionisation signals were frequently recorded by the detector. It was concluded that this signal originated from the incident particle charge. In the final section of work, as an example, the influence of oblique incidence, side-wall impacts and particle charge effects on data collected by the Gorid dust detector in Earth orbit were investigated. Corrections were applied to the mass and velocity distributions derived from Gorid data. In extremis, oblique incidence effects were found to shift the mass distribution down by an order of magnitude, and the velocity distribution up by a factor of two to three. If all the data had come from unrecognised side-wall impacts, the mass distribution would be shifted downwards to lower masses by three orders of magnitude, and the velocity distribution upwards by a factor of five. Possible particle charge effects were found to shift the mass distribution down by 30%, and did not alter the velocity distribution.Overall we have investigated a variety of impact-related phenomena and conclude that these can affect the interpretation of data from instruments deployed in space.  相似文献

CO2 Mitigation by Agriculture: An Overview   总被引:6,自引:0,他引:6
Agriculture currently contributes significantly to the increase of CO2 in the atmosphere, primarily through the conversion of native ecosystems to agricultural uses in the tropics. Yet there are major opportunities for mitigation of CO2 and other greenhouse gas emissions through changes in the use and management of agricultural lands. Agricultural mitigation options can be broadly divided into two categories: (I) strategies to maintain and increase stocks of organic C in soils (and biomass), and (ii) reductions in fossil C consumption, including reduced emissions by the agricultural sector itself and through agricultural production of biofuels to substitute for fossil fuels.Reducing the conversion of new land to agriculture in the tropics could substantially reduce CO2 emissions, but this option faces several difficult issues including population increase, land tenure and other socio-political factors in developing countries. The most significant opportunities for reducing tropical land conversions are in the humid tropics and in tropical wetlands. An important linkage is to improve the productivity and sustainability of existing agricultural lands in these regions.Globally, we estimate potential agricultural CO2 mitigation through soil C sequestration to be 0.4-0.9 Pg C y-1, through better management of existing agricultural soils, restoration of degraded lands, permanent "set-asides" of surplus agricultural lands in temperate developed countries and restoration of 10-20% of former wetlands now being used for agriculture. However, soils have a finite capacity to store additional C and therefore any increases in C stocks following changes in management would be largely realized within 50-100 years.Mitigation potential through reducing direct agricultural emissions is modest, 0.01-0.05 Pg C y-1. However, the potential to offset fossil C consumption through the use of biofuels produced by agriculture is substantial, 0.5-1.6 Pg C y-1, mainly through the production of dedicated biofuel crops with a smaller contribution (0.2-0.3 Pg C y-1) from crop residues. Many agricultural mitigation options represent "win-win" situations, in that there are important side benefits, in addition to CO2 mitigation, that could be achieved, e.g. improved soil fertility with higher soil organic matter, protection of lands poorly suited for permanent agriculture, cost saving for fossil fuel inputs and diversification of agricultural production (e.g. biofuels). However, the needs for global food production and farmer/societal acceptability suggest that mitigation technologies should conform to: (I) the enhancement of agricultural production levels in parts of the world where food production and population demand are in delicate balance and (ii) the accrual of additional benefits to the farmer (e.g., reduced labor, reduced or more efficient use of inputs) and society at large.  相似文献
