Dispersion and radial depth of investigation of borehole modes   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
Sonic techniques in geophysical prospecting involve elastic wave velocity measurements that are performed by placing acoustic transmitters and receivers in a fluid‐filled borehole. The signals recorded at the receivers are processed to obtain compressional‐ and shear‐wave velocities in the surrounding formation. These velocities are generally used in seismic surveys for the time‐to‐depth conversion and other formation parameters, such as porosity and lithology. Depending upon the type of transmitter used (e.g. monopole or dipole) and as a result of eccentering, it is possible to excite axisymmetric (n= 0) , flexural (n= 1) and quadrupole (n= 2) families of modes propagating along the borehole. We present a study of various propagating and leaky modes that includes their dispersion and attenuation characteristics caused by radiation into the surrounding formation. A knowledge of propagation characteristics of borehole modes helps in a proper selection of transmitter bandwidth for suppressing unwanted modes that create problems in the inversion for the compressional‐ and shear‐wave velocities from the dispersive arrivals. It also helps in the design of a transmitter for a preferential excitation of a given mode in order to reduce interference with drill‐collar or drilling noise for sonic measurements‐while‐drilling. Computational results for the axisymmetric family of modes in a fast formation with a shear‐wave velocity of 2032 m/s show the existence of Stoneley, pseudo‐Rayleigh and anharmonic cut‐off modes. In a slow formation with a shear‐wave velocity of 508 m/s, we find the existence of the Stoneley mode and the first leaky compressional mode which cuts in at approximately the same normalized frequency ωa/VS= 2.5 (a is the borehole radius) as that of the fast formation. The corresponding modes among the flexural family include the lowest‐order flexural and anharmonic cut‐off modes. For both the fast and slow formations, the first anharmonic mode cuts in at a normalized frequency ωa/VS= 1.5 approximately. Cut‐off frequencies of anharmonic modes are inversely proportional to the borehole radius in the absence of any tool. The borehole quadrupole mode can also be used for estimating formation shear slownesses. The radial depth of investigation with a quadrupole mode is marginally less than that of a flexural mode because of its higher frequency of excitation.  相似文献

The geochemical baselines of nickel and chromium were studied from the data produced by the Barents Ecogeochemistry project, a large international regional geochemical mapping exercise. The project surveyed major and trace element distributions in stream water, organic and mineralogically-modified soil horizons, and terrestrial moss in the northwestern part of Russia and in Finland. Other materials were collected during the pilot phase and later from thirty special sites. The results on respective materials by XRF, ICP-MS and ICP-AES showed that both geological and anthropogenic factors have an influence on the geochemical baseline concentrations of Ni and Cr in organic soil and stream water. The main explanation of the observed distribution patterns in terrestrial moss is human activity, but geological factors can also affect the baselines. The variation of geochemical baselines in the mineral-rich soil horizon depends only on variations in bedrock. The mineralogy of samples mainly controls the leachability properties of soil samples.  相似文献

对日本海中部、北部和西部四个深水多管沉积岩芯中的210Pb活度和沉积物粒度进行分析。结果显示百年以来大和海脊、日本海北部和西部陆坡沉积物以粉砂和黏土质粉砂为主。在日本海北部和大和海脊表层沉积物存在显著的生物扰动现象,而在西部陆坡不存在。基于恒定供给速率(CRS)模式建立了4个岩芯的年代框架,并计算了沉积速率。日本海现代平均沉积速率介于0.19~0.42 cm/a,最低值出现在大和海脊。4个岩芯中沉积物平均粒径呈现不同的分布模式,但是在1940年和1980年,沉积物粒度分布模式同时发生了改变,这可能与百年以来北太平洋十年涛动(PDO)及东亚夏季风震荡有关。  相似文献

An analysis of X-ray and optical light curves of the magnetic cataclysmic variable (MCV) BY Cam is presented. This system is one of three MCVs in which the spin period of the white dwarf and the binary orbital period differ by ∼1 per cent. As such these 'BY Cam' stars are important objects with which to probe the field structure of the magnetic white dwarf and ultimately the nature of synchronization of AM Her binaries. We confirm asynchronous rotation of the magnetic white dwarf with respect to the binary. We find evidence that the accretion stream accretes directly on to the white dwarf as in AM Her systems, but further, the stream impacts on to different magnetic poles over the course of the beat period. We present evidence that the optical and hard X-ray light curves modulate in phase, but together they are out of phase with the soft X-ray light curve. We confirm the spin down of the white dwarf which is expected to lead to the synchronization of the spin and orbital periods of BY Cam.  相似文献

Phase equilibria in the system CaO–MgO–SiO2–CO2–H2O–NaCl are calculated to illustrate phase relations in metacarbonates over a wide-range of P–T–X[H2O–CO2–NaCl] conditions. Calculations are performed using the equation of state of Duan et al. (Geochim Cosmochim Acta 59:2869–2882, 1995) for H2O–CO2–NaCl fluids and the internally consistent data set of Gottschalk (Eur J Mineral 9:175–223, 1997) for thermodynamic properties of solids. Results are presented in isothermal-isobarical plots showing stable mineral assemblages as a function of fluid composition. It is shown that in contact-metamorphic P–T regimes the presence of very small concentrations of NaCl in the fluid causes almost all decarbonation reactions to proceed within the two fluid solvus of the H2O–CO2–NaCl system. Substantial flow of magma-derived fluids into marbles has been documented for many contact aureoles by shifts in stable isotope geochemistry of the host rocks and by the progress of volatile-producing mineral reactions controlled by fluid compositions. Time-integrated fluid fluxes have been estimated by combining fluid advection/dispersion models with the spatial arrangement of mineral reactions and isotopic resetting. All existing models assume that minerals react in the presence of a single phase H2O–CO2 fluid and do not allow for the effect that fluid immiscibility has on the flow patterns. It is shown that fluids emanating from calc-alkaline melts that crystallize at shallow depths are brines. Their salinity may vary depending mainly on pressure and fraction of crystallized melt. Infiltration-driven decarbonation reactions in the host rocks inevitably proceed at the boundaries of the two fluid solvus where the produced CO2 is immiscible and may separate from the brine as a low salinity, low density H2O–CO2 fluid. Most parameters of fluid–rock interaction in contact aureoles that are derived from progress of mineral reactions and stable isotope resetting are probably incorrect because fluid phase separation is disregarded.  相似文献

Nanoflare-heating theory predicts steady hot-plasma emission in non-flaring active regions. It is hard to find this emission with conventional non-monochromatic imagers (such as the Atmospheric Imaging Assembly or the X-Ray Telescope), because their images contain a cool-temperature background. In this work, we search for hot plasma in non-flaring active regions using the Mg?xii spectroheliograph onboard the Complex Orbital Observations Near-Earth of Activity on the Sun (CORONAS)-F/SPectroheliographIc X-ray Imaging Telescope (SPIRIT). This instrument acquired monochromatic images of the solar corona in the Mg?xii 8.42 Å line, which emits only at temperatures higher than 4 MK. The Mg?xii images only contain the signal from hot plasma, without any low-temperature background. We studied the hot plasma in active regions using SPIRIT data from 18?–?28 February 2002. During this period, the Mg?xii spectroheliograph worked with a 105-second cadence almost without data gaps. Hot plasma was observed only in the flaring active regions. We did not observe any hot plasma in non-flaring active regions. The hot-plasma column emission measure in the non-flaring active region is not expected to exceed \(3 \times10^{24}\) cm?5. The hot differential emission measure is lower than 0.01% of the DEM of the main temperature component. The absence of Mg?xii emission in the non-flaring active regions can be explained by weak and frequent nanoflares (with a delay of less than 500 seconds) or by very short and intense nanoflares that lead to non-equilibrium ionization.  相似文献
