Magnetospheric substorms and solar flares seem to follow a pattern where a sudden transition from a slow passive evolution to a fast active evolution occurs. This concept which has proven useful for constructing a theory of the onset of magnetospheric substorms is tentatively applied to current sheets which may be relevant to flares.  相似文献

Recent observations of the solar corona with the LASCO coronagraph on board of the SOHO spacecraft have revealed the occurrence of triple helmet streamers even during solar minimum, which occasionally go unstable and give rise to large coronal mass ejections. There are also indications that the slow solar wind is either a combination of a quasi-stationary flow and a highly fluctuating component or may even be caused completely by many small eruptions or instabilities. As a first step we recently presented an analytical method to calculate simple two-dimensional stationary models of triple helmet streamer configurations. In the present contribution we use the equations of time-dependent resistive magnetohydrodynamics to investigate the stability and the dynamical behaviour of these configurations. We particularly focus on the possible differences between the dynamics of single isolated streamers and triple streamers and on the way in which magnetic reconnection initiates both small scale and large scale dynamical behaviour of the streamers. Our results indicate that small eruptions at the helmet streamer cusp may incessantly accelerate small amounts of plasma without significant changes of the equilibrium configuration and might thus contribute to the non-stationary slow solar wind. On larger time and length scales, large coronal eruptions can occur as a consequence of large scale magnetic reconnection events inside the streamer configuration. Our results also show that triple streamers are usually more stable than a single streamer.  相似文献

Observations of a limb flare and an associated loop prominence were obtained in H with the 512 channel magnetograph of the Kitt Peak National Observatory. Simultaneous radial and torsional oscillations with a period near 75 s, wavelength of 37 000 km, and amplitude of 1–2 km s–1 were detected in the loop approximately 90 min before the onset of the flare. We interpret these coupled oscillations in terms of a kink instability of a current carrying flux tube. The orientation of the maximum horizontal stress SH is obtained from the analysis of borehole breakouts, covering a depth range from 300 to 3415 m (below sea level) in twelve offshore exploration wells in the northwestern Valencia Trough. The orientation of SH is roughly coincident with the strike of major extensional structures. From N to S it changes counterclockwise from a NE–SW orientation to a N–S orientation. Estimates of the tectonic regimes indicate that the area is characterised predominantly by normal-faulting with a strike-slip component. Both the stress orientations and the tectonic regimes are consistent with neotectonic studies in the nearby Catalan Coastal Ranges. An established method of estimating the tectonic regime by Moos and Zoback (1990) was modified by the inclusion of a nontrivial cohesion, but this changes the results insignificantly.  相似文献

This paper discusses the occurence of current sheets near the separatrix in sheared magnetic field structures containing an x-type neutral point, as suggested by a number of previous authors. Our approach is based on selfconsistent theory. In analogy to the theory of quasistatic convection by Grad, we interpret the break-down of the quasistatic theory near the separatrix as evidence for the occurence of a boundary layer. In particular, this picture suggests large (however integrable) current sheets, with the current flowing parallel to the poloidal magnetic field. This concept is also tested by numerical computations. Here the discretization procedure simulates those physical effects that in a real case would keep the current from becoming infinitely large. The results fully confirm the formation of current sheets. Our findings have potential applications to energy storage for solar flares and to the heating of the solar corona.  相似文献

Groups and clusters contain a large fraction of hot gas which emitsX-ray radiation. This gas yields information on the dynamical stateand on the total mass of these systems. X-ray spectra show that heavyelements are present in the gas. As these metals must have beenproduced in the cluster/group galaxies and later transported into thegas, the metallicity is a good tracer for the transport processes. Severalpossible processes, that transport gas from the small potential wellsof the galaxies into the clusters and groups, are discussed.  相似文献

We present an XMM observation of the moderately distant (z=0.41)galaxy cluster CL 0939+4713 (Abell 851), an exceptionally rich cluster. The formation and evolution of clusters depends sensitively on cosmological parameters like the mean matter density in the universe Οm. Therefore it is important to determine the dynamical state of clusters at different redshifts, i.e. at different evolutionary states. The X-ray morphology alone is not the best indicator of the dynamical state, but it should be complemented with all other information available, e.g. the temperature map or the galaxy distribution. The combination of all findings gives a detailed picture of the state of a cluster. This analysis, of this relatively distant cluster, can be used as a basis for comparisons at lower and higher redshifts. The capability of XMM to perform spatially resolved spectroscopy can be used also to determine the distribution of the metal abundances. Not only the overall value of metallicity but also its spatial distribution gives important indications on the metal enrichment processes. The X-ray image shows pronounced substructure. There are two main subclusters which have also some internal structure. This is an indication that the cluster is a dynamically young system. This conclusion is supported by the temperature distribution: a hot region is found between the two main subclusters indicating that the cluster is in the process of a major merger, in which the two subclusters will probably collide in a few hundreds of Myr. The intra-cluster gas of CL 0939+4713 shows variations of the metal abundances. The optically richer subcluster has a somewhat higher metallicity. This finding together with the absence of post-starburst galaxies in this region gives interesting hints on the metal enrichment processes favouring recent enrichment processes like ram-pressure stripping or tidal stripping. Throughout this paper we use H 0 =50 km s-1Mpc-1 and q 0 =0.5; all errors are 90% confidence levels. The occurrence and binding energies of the U6+, U5+ and U4+ bands in the U 4f7/2 peak of 19 uranyl minerals of different composition and structure were measured by XPS. The results suggest that these minerals can be divided into the following four groups: (1) Uranyl-hydroxy-hydrate compounds with no or monovalent interstitial cations; (2) Uranyl-hydroxy-hydrate minerals with divalent interstitial cations; (3) Uranyl-oxysalt minerals with (TOn) groups (T = Si, P, and C) in which all equatorial O-atoms of the uranyl-polyhedra are shared with (TOn) groups; (4) Uranyl-oxysalt minerals with (TOn) groups (T = S and Se), in which some equatorial O-atoms are shared only between uranyl polyhedra. The average binding energies of the U6+and U4+ bands shift to lower values with (1) incorporation of divalent cations and (2) increase in the Lewis basicity of the anion group bonded to U. The first observation is a consequence of an increase in the bond-valence transfer from the interstitial species (cations, H2O) groups to the O-atoms of the uranyl-groups, which results in an electron transfer from O to U6+. The second trend correlates with an increase in the covalency of the UO bonds with increase in Lewis basicity of the anion group, which results in a shift of the electron density from O to U. The presence of U4+ on the surface of uranyl minerals can be detected by the shape of the U 4f7/2 peak, and the occurrence of the U 5f peak and satellite peaks belonging to the U 4f5/2 peak. The presence of U4+ in some of the uranyl minerals and synthetics examined may be related to the conditions during their formation. A charge-balance mechanism is proposed for the incorporation of lower-valence U in the structure of uranyl minerals. Exposure of a Na-substituted metaschoepite crystal in air and to Ultra-High Vacuum results in dehydration of its surface structure associated with a shift of the U6+ bands to higher binding energies. The latter observation indicates a shift in electron density from U to O, which must be related to structural changes inside the upper surface layers of Na-substituted metaschoepite.  相似文献

Dissolution experiments on single crystals of uranophane and uranophane-β, Ca(H2O)5[(UO2)(SiO3(OH)]2, from the Shinkolobwe mine of the Democratic Republic of Congo, were done in an aqueous HCl solution of pH 3.5 for 3 h, in HCl solutions of pH 2 for 5, 10 and 30 min, and in Pb2+-, Ba-, Sr-, Ca- and Mg-HCl solutions of pH 2 for 30 min. The basal surfaces of the treated uranophane crystals were examined using atomic-force microscopy (AFM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Solutions after dissolution experiments on single crystals and synthetic powders were analysed with inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES) and mass spectroscopy (ICP-MS). The morphology of the observed etch pits (measured by AFM) were compared to the morphology, predicted on the basis of the bond-valence deficiency of polyhedron chains along the edges of the basal surface. Etch pits form in HCl solutions of pH 2. Their decrease in depth with the duration of the dissolution experiment is explained with the stepwave dissolution model, which describes the lowering of the surrounding area of an etch pit with continuous waves of steps emanated from the etch pit into the rest of the crystal surface. Hillocks form in an HCl solution of pH 3.5, and the chemical composition of the surface (as indicated by XPS) shows that these hillocks are the result of the precipitation of a uranyl-hydroxy-hydrate phase. Well-orientated hillocks form on the surface of uranophane in a SrCl2-HCl solution of pH 2. They are part of an aged silica coating of composition Si2O2(OH)4(H2O)n. An amorphous layer forms on the surface of uranophane in a MgCl2-HCl solution of pH 2, which has a composition and structure similar to silicic acid. Small crystallites of uranyl-hydroxy-hydrate phases form on the surface of uranophane after treatment in Pb(NO3)2-HCl and BaCl2-HCl solutions of pH 2. Dissolution experiments on synthetic uranophane powders show that in the early stage of the experiments, the dissolution rate of uranophane increase in the sequence Pb(NO3)2-HCl < BaCl2-HCl < CaCl2-HCl < HCl < SrCl2-HCl < MgCl2-HCl, indicating that the dissolution of uranophane is more enhanced in solutions containing divalent cations of small ionic radii and high Lewis acidity (Mg, MgCl+).  相似文献
