Water-table elevation measurements and aquifer parameter estimates are rare in alpine settings because few wells exist in these environments. Alpine groundwater systems may be a primary source of recharge to regional groundwater flow systems. Handcart Gulch is an alpine watershed in Colorado, USA comprised of highly fractured Proterozoic metamorphic and igneous rocks with wells completed to various depths. Primary study objectives include determining hydrologic properties of shallow bedrock and surficial materials, developing a watershed water budget, and testing the consistency of measured hydrologic properties and water budget by constructing a simple model incorporating groundwater and surface water for water year 2005. Water enters the study area as precipitation and exits as discharge in the trunk stream or potential recharge for the deeper aquifer. Surficial infiltration rates ranged from 0.1–6.2×10?5 m/s. Discharge was estimated at 1.28×10?3 km3. Numerical modeling analysis of single-well aquifer tests predicted lower specific storage in crystalline bedrock than in ferricrete and colluvial material (6.7×10?5–2.0×10?3 l/m). Hydraulic conductivity in crystalline bedrock was significantly lower than in colluvial and alluvial material (4.3×10?9–2.0×10?4 m/s). Water budget results suggest that during normal precipitation and temperatures water is available to recharge the deeper groundwater flow system.  相似文献

A model to assess the impact of oil spill on fisheries, consisting of an oil spill fates model, a continental shelf hydrodynamics model, an ichthyoplankton transport and fates model, and a fish population model, has been applied to the Georges Bank-Gulf of Maine region to estimate the impact of oil spills on several important commercial fisheries. The model addresses direct impacts of oil on a fishery through hydrocarbon-induced egg and larval mortality. This early life stage mortality is estimated by dynamically mapping the spatial intersection of the surface and subsurface oil concentrations resulting from the spill with the developing eggs and larvae. Ichthyoplankton entering an area with hydrocarbon concentrations in excess of a specified threshold are assumed lost. Model output is given in terms of differential catch, comparing the non-impacted and the hydrocarbon impacted fisheries. Difficulties in establishing stock-recruit relationships, and the inability to predict first year survival even one year ahead make the quantification of absolute catch losses impossible. Output of the model system discussed here is therefore limited to relative rather than absolute catch losses.The paper is organized to demonstrate first the importance of the recruitment question to impact estimation, second that a modeling methodology is necessary to evaluate impacts given the magnitude of unexplained observed recruitment variability, and third a stochastic solution to the problem which places impact estimates in the context of a probability distribution. Lastly, the model system is applied to the problem of attaining better early life history mortality estimates, to ultimately improve impact estimation capabilities.  相似文献

Elemental abundances of the moderately rotating B9–A3 stars λ UMa, 59 Her, 14 Cyg and 29 Cyg have been derived in a consistent manner with previous studies of this series from spectrograms obtained with Reticon and CCD detectors. The derived elemental abundances show that λ UMa is a mild Am star, while 59 Her is slightly metal-rich. Although 14 Cyg has values closer to solar than these stars, its subsolar Ca and Sc abundances indicate that it might be the hottest known hot-Am star. 29 Cyg is a metal-poor λ Boo star.  相似文献

Elemental abundances of 28 And (A7 III) and 99 Her (F7 V), which have modest rotational velocities, are derived in a manner consistent with previous studies in this series of papers. The values for 28 And, a δ Scuti variable, show that it is slightly metal-poor, but not a classical Am star. 99 Her, which is somewhat more metal-poor, has a rather small microturbulence for its spectral type.  相似文献

Hydrothermally altered bedrock in the Silverton mining area, southwest Colorado, USA, contains sulfide minerals that weather to produce acidic and metal-rich leachate that is toxic to aquatic life. This study utilized a geographic information system (GIS) and statistical approach to identify watershed-scale geologic variables in the Silverton area that influence water quality. GIS analysis of mineral maps produced using remote sensing datasets including Landsat Thematic Mapper, advanced spaceborne thermal emission and reflection radiometer, and a hybrid airborne visible infrared imaging spectrometer and field-based product enabled areas of alteration to be quantified. Correlations between water quality signatures determined at watershed outlets, and alteration types intersecting both total watershed areas and GIS-buffered areas along streams were tested using linear regression analysis. Despite remote sensing datasets having varying watershed area coverage due to vegetation cover and differing mineral mapping capabilities, each dataset was useful for delineating acid-generating bedrock. Areas of quartz–sericite–pyrite mapped by AVIRIS have the highest correlations with acidic surface water and elevated iron and aluminum concentrations. Alkalinity was only correlated with area of acid neutralizing, propylitically altered bedrock containing calcite and chlorite mapped by AVIRIS. Total watershed area of acid-generating bedrock is more significantly correlated with acidic and metal-rich surface water when compared with acid-generating bedrock intersected by GIS-buffered areas along streams. This methodology could be useful in assessing the possible effects that alteration type area has in either generating or neutralizing acidity in unmined watersheds and in areas where new mining is planned.  相似文献

Recent HST images of the saturnian satellites Prometheus and Pandora show that their longitudes deviate from predictions of ephemerides based on Voyager images. Currently Prometheus is lagging and Pandora leading these predictions by somewhat more than 20°. We show that these discrepancies are fully accounted for by gravitational interactions between the two satellites. These peak every 24.8 days at conjunctions and excite chaotic perturbations. The Lyapunov exponent for the Prometheus-Pandora system is of order 0.3 year−1 for satellite masses based on a nominal density of 0.63 g cm−3. Interactions are strongest when the orbits come closest together. This happens at intervals of 6.2 years when their apses are antialigned. In this context, we note the sudden changes of opposite signs in the mean motions of Prometheus and Pandora at the end of 2000 occurred around the time their apsidal lines were antialigned.  相似文献

Certain hard and normally opaque minerals, both rare and common, occasionally crystallize as transparent or partly transparent ‘gem’ crystals. Such stones, designated ‘crystalline coloured gemstones’ (CCGs), form under highly constrained just-so ‘Goldilocks’ conditions that did not exist prior to the last supercontinent cycle. One set of gem-forming conditions arises during continent-to-continent collisions. Another comes into existence during the breakup of continents and produces distinctively different gems. Over 50 different CCG-forming metamorphic and pegmatitic minerals of the first type crystallize in certain orogenic areas near the edges of continents. In East Africa, the Himalayas, Pamirs and Hindu Kush, groups of CCG deposits formed near the leading edge of the upper plate during the collisions, and are associated with large scale circular arcs. Gems of the second type, which are for the most part blue–green–yellow magmatic sapphires, occur in conjunction with continental volcanism in eastern Australia, far eastern Russia, eastern China, Laos, Vietnam, Thailand, Rwanda, Cameroon, Nigeria and elsewhere. Orogeny causes deep fractures to be regenerated upward into younger rocks. CCG deposits of the first type are systematically associated with ancient fractures originating from below, vestiges of the Earth’s early history. Fractures may be older than the rocks in which they are observed.  相似文献
