The 1400 m deep drilling of Lake Biwa has revealed that the lake probably originated ca. 5 · 106 yr ago. After a geographic shift to its present position, and by more than 3.105 yr ago, it had become a large and deep lake. The considerable longevity, large size and high diversity of habitats of this lake are considered to have contributed to its high abundance of endemic taxa. These taxa fall into two categories: (1) relict species of the Asiatic continent, higher latitude or marine origin; (2) species differentiated in the lake from littoral-lacustrine species, and having adapted to habitats peculiar to Lake Biwa. I discuss some of these endemic organisms, briefly review recent in vestigations on fossil organisms of the lake, and more fully discuss the origin of a representative endemic species, the pelagic gobiid fish Chaenogobius isaza Tanaka. This species is regarded as having differentiated from some littoral Chaenogobius species, creating a novel niche in the open water area after Lake Biwa was established as a deep lake.This is the seventh of a series of papers to be published by this journal that was presented in the paleolimnology sessions organized by R. B. Davis and H. Löffler for the XIIth Congress of the International Union for Quaternary Research (INQUA), which took place in Ottawa, Canada in August 1987. Drs. The influence of seasonal and cyclonic winds is studied on the characteristics of internal waves (IWs) over the western Bay of Bengal (BoB) by using MITgcm model. As the BoB experiences reversal of seasonal winds and also tropical cyclones during pre-monsoon and post-monsoon months, its effect is seen through the computation of spectral estimates of the IWs. It is seen that the peak estimate is associated with the semidiurnal frequency at all the depths and is found higher in May compared to November. This is attributed to the presence of shallow mixed layer depth and deep thermocline due to the upwelling favorable winds. The computation of isopycnal displacement infers that the internal tides are present from 40 to 120 m depth in case of upwelling favorable winds of May, whereas, the presence of internal tides is restricted between 90 and 120 m for the downwelling favorable winds of November. During May, the available potential energy is also seen in a narrow coastal stretch, whilst it is absent in November. During the Hudhud cyclone period of October 7–14, 2014, it is noticed from the spectral estimates that the IWs of tidal frequency are replaced by inertial frequency with a periodicity of about 2 days as a consequence of strong cyclonic winds. The progressive vector diagram shows the mean current is initially westward up to October 17, 2014 and then northeastward with well-defined clockwise circulation. The maximum radius of inertial oscillation of 15 km is observed. After the cyclone ceases, the estimate associated with inertial frequency slowly diminishes and enhances the estimates related to internal tides. The simulations also suggest that the internal tides are absent for about 6 weeks as a response of the cyclonic winds.

Investigations including a bathymetric survey, sonic prospecting, and vibrocoring were performed to understand the horizontal and vertical distribution of 137Cs in seabed sediments in shallow seas with depths less than 30 m near the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant. Especially, features of 137Cs distributions in deeper sections of the seabed sediments were studied to evaluate the vertical heterogeneity of 137Cs distribution in the seabed sediments in shallow seas. The distribution area of the seabed sediments was less than half of the investigation area, and the locations of the seabed sediments were divided into flat and terrace-like seafloors based on their topographical features. The thicknesses of the seabed sediment layers were mostly <2 m. The 137Cs inventories in the seabed sediments varied from 13 ± 1 to 3,510 ± 26 kBq m?2, and continuous distributions of 137Cs at depths greater than 81 cm were observed. The 137Cs distributions were not uniform; however, the 137Cs inventories tended to be larger near the base of the steeper ascending slopes than in the terrace-like seafloors themselves. Based on the relationship between the 137Cs inventories and mean shear stress, features of the seafloor topography were inferred to be significant control factors governing the horizontal and vertical distribution of 137Cs in the seabed sediments. Rapid changes and multiple peaks in the vertical profile of the 137Cs distributions suggest that they are related to pulse input caused by heavy-rain events. Change in the 137Cs inventories with depth in this study are larger than those reported in previous studies, indicating earlier results of 137Cs inventories per unit in seabed sediments in shallow seas, especially near the river mouth, which drains a radiologically highly-contaminated basin, were underestimated.  相似文献

We have prepared a HF-HCl residue and its oxidized residue of the Allende meteorite and have measured the elemental concentrations and the isotopic compositions of noble gases. In the HF-HCl reside, noble gases are enriched in colloidal fraction compared to the non-colloidal fraction by a factor of 2-4. The heavy noble gases were evidently lost after the oxidization, indicating that phase Q (carrier of planetary heavy noble gases) was removed by the oxidation. The Raman spectroscopic parameters show that the colloidal fraction of the HF-HCl residue is more amorphous compared to the non-colloidal fraction. As the ion irradiation converts carbon into a more amorphous form, our result indicates that the “plasma model” is more plausible than the “labyrinth model” as the origin of phase Q. TEM (Transmission Electron Microscope) observations also show such a trace of ion irradiation. While the TEM observations did not show any large difference between the HF-HCl residue and its oxidized residue, the Raman spectroscopic parameters changed discretely resulting from the oxidization. This observation indicates that the oxidization not only dissolved and removed oxidized carbon, but also changed the carbon structure itself to a more amorphous (disordered) state. The Raman spectroscopic results indicate the possibility that release of Q-gas during oxidation is not accompanied by mass loss and that the release of Q-gas simply resulted from rearrangement of carbon structure during oxidation.  相似文献

Abstract. Inorganic chemical compositions are determined for late Early Triassic siliceous claystone ('Toishi-type' shale) and associated chert from Oritate area, Sambosan Belt, Kyushu, southwest Japan. The siliceous claystone is similar in chemical composition to Post-Archean Australian Shale (PAAS), but is depleted in Ca, Sr, Mn, and Fe and slightly enriched in Cu, Zn, P, and rare earth elements (REEs). The siliceous claystone and associated chert have flat REE patterns with positive Eu anomalies and no distinct Ce anomaly. The siliceous claystone and associated chert have largely constant Ti/Al, Th/Al, and Nb/Al ratios compared to the variable ratios found in siliceous shale and sandstone deposited close to land in a trench setting. This suggests that the claystone and chert were deposited in a deep-sea pelagic environment and were derived mainly from the suspended fraction, including eolian dust and material transported from distant lands, rather than from turbidity currents that occurred close to land. The low Ca contents of the analyzed rocks indicate deposition below the calcium-carbonate compensation depth. The depletion of Mn and Fe, and no distinct Ce anomaly in the Oritate siliceous claystone are also evident, being similar to those in samples from the Sasayama and Kinkazan sections in the Mino-Tanba Belt, where oceanic anoxia developed during the Late Permian to earliest Triassic. This might suggest that oceanic anoxia prevailed through to the late Early Triassic.  相似文献

Summary We have developed an absolute gravimeter with a rotating vacuum pipe. The rotating vacuum pipe has an angular velocity high enough to keep a falling object to the end of it, where the falling object begins to drop by stopping the pipe vertical. We put a Michelson interferometer with a stabilized He-Ne laser under the vacuum pipe to measure the position of the falling object at every 1 ms synchronized with a rubidium frequency standard. This absolute gravimeter has succeeded in the measurements with a drop-to-drop scatter of 1.9 × 10–7ms–2 (19µGal) at the Esashi Gravity Station in the end of 1989 and also has succeeded in the continuous measurements for a week at the same place in December 1991. During the three-year experiments, the measured gravity values have gradually increased until the end of 1991 and then gained in the rate of increase, although we cannot deny the possibility of instrumental origin. The comparisons with other types of absolute gravimeters showed that the values obtained by the absolute gravimeter with a rotating vacuum pipe are close to those obtained by the absolute gravimeters ILOM#1 and NAOM#2 and are lower than those obtained by JILA#4, though the times of comparisons are different.  相似文献

In order to characterize the planetary noble gas carrier Q, we separated a Q-rich floating fraction from the Allende meteorite into ten fractions by a combination of colloidal and density separations. All five noble gases in the separated fractions were analyzed by pyrolysis in 600 and 1600°C temperature steps. Half of Q in the floating fraction is concentrated in the fraction C1-8D with the density of 1.65 ± 0.04 g/cm3. All the separated fractions show similar isotopic ratios except for 40Ar/36Ar ratios. C1-8D has the lowest 38Ar/36Ar and 40Ar/36Ar ratios (0.18784 ± 0.00020 and 4.36 ± 0.15, respectively) in the 1600°C fraction, confirming that the fraction is enriched in Q. Most grains in C1-8D are carbonaceous with small amounts of F and O. These results imply either that the density of Q is 1.65 ± 0.04 g/cm3 or that Q preferentially sticks to matter of that density. All the separates have similar Q to diamond ratios, indicating that Q and diamond are closely associated.  相似文献

The activity of photosynthesis and the contents of chlorophylla and pheo-pigments were compared in the samples of the intake and effluent seawater of Owase-Mita Thermal Power Plant and in the seawater samples in the Yoshimi Bay before and after heat treatment. At Owase-Mita Thermal Power Plant, after passage of sea water through the cooling system chlorophylla content reduced to about a half and pheo-pigment content doubled in August with high temperature (25–27C), but the contents of chlorophylla and pheo-pigments changed little in January with low temperature (16C); whereas the depression of photosynthetic activity after passing through the cooling system was 71–77 % in August and 31–46 % in January. In the laboratory experiments, the heat treatment at 34–43C for 7–8 sec., which resulted in temperature rise of 7–8C, gave the decrease of chlorophylla and an increase of pheo-pigments in August temperature (26.5C), but a slight decrease of chlorophylla and a slight increase of pheo-pigments in November at the initial temperature of 19.2C, while in January and December the samples with low initial temperature (11.6 and 10.8C) showed almost no change in the content of pigments; the decrease in photosynthetic activity was 32 % in August sample,ca. 11 % in November sample,ca. 15% in January and almost no change in December. It is concluded that the photosynthetic carbon assimilation of marine phytoplankton is suppressed by passing through the cooling system of a thermal power plant even at lower water temperature in winter, while the content of chlorophylla is affected very little at a temperature below 20C.  相似文献

In a previous paper (Oguma and Nagata, 2002), it was shown that frequency distributions of temperature and salinity in the sea off Sanriku Coast, Japan are skewed, and sometimes observed values exceed m + 5σ (m = mean, σ = standard deviation). This means that, if we apply a 3σ criterion for a range check, many real data would be lost. We have expanded our analysis to the subarctic North Pacific, the subarctic North Atlantic and their surrounding areas, by computing the distributions of skewness and kurtosis. It is found that the region of high positive skewness extends in an east-north-east direction in the Mixed Water Region from off Sanriku, and reaches to about 155°E. A high negative skewness zone is recognized along the southern margin of the Kuroshio Extension. These are thought to be generated by the breaking of the meander of the Kuroshio Extension and subsequent ejection of warm and cold eddies to the north and south, respectively. Other high positive skewness areas are found to the south of Kuril Islands and in the Japan Sea. These are generated due to very sharp vertical gradients of temperature and salinity. The situation in the North Atlantic is very similar to the North Pacific, though the detailed nature is changed due to differences of oceanographic condition. The effect of grid size on the skewed nature of the distribution is also discussed. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

Generation and propagation of internal waves (IWs) in the coastal waters of the extended shelf of the western Bay of Bengal are investigated for late winter by using the Massachusetts Institute of Technology General Circulation Model (MITgcm). The model is forced with astronomical tides and daily winds. Monthly climatological temperature and salinity fields are used as initial conditions. The simulations are compared with time series observations of temperature and currents from acoustic Doppler current profiler (ADCP) and conductivity-temperature-depth (CTD) moored at three locations south of Gopalpur: two at a local depth of 100 m and another at 400-m depth during 19–21 February 2012. The comparison of the spectral estimates for the time series of temperature from the model and observations are in reasonable agreement for the near-tidal frequency waves. The peak of temperature spectra is always found near the shelf break region which steadily lost its intensity over the continental shelf. The calculation of Richardson number reflected the presence of local mixing due to density overturning in the shelf region. To understand further the generation and propagation of internal tides in the region, energy flux and conversion of barotropic-to-baroclinic M2 tidal energy are examined. The model simulations suggest that the internal tide is generated all along the shelf slope. The energy flux analysis shows that the internal tides propagate to either side of the generation sites.  相似文献
