High-resolution solar spectroscopy with TESOS – Upgrade from a double to a triple system

We present the characteristics and demonstrate the performance of the Triple Etalon SOlar Spectrometer (TESOS) operated at the German Vacuum Tower Telescope (VTT) on Tenerife. The Fabry–Pérot interferometer TESOS is ideally suited for precise measurements of photospheric and chromospheric motion. Installed in 1997 and equipped with two etalons, TESOS has recently been completed with a third etalon and upgraded with two high-speed, backside-illuminated CCD cameras. The image scale of 0.089 arc sec pixel^–1 is adapted to the resolution of the telescope. The improved system enables frame rates up to 5 frames per second. The spectral resolution of 300000 allows for spectral diagnostics of weak photospheric lines, including individual CH-lines within the G-band at 430.6 nm.     

The luminosity function of nearby galaxies (mitteilungen der universitätssternwarte zu jena nr. 147)

Using the catalogue of galaxies within 10 Mpc by Kraan-Korteweg and Tammann (1979) the local luminosity function of galaxies is derived. Possibly there exists a large population of faint elliptical systems being an important constituent in the Universe. From this luminosity function the local mass density Q = 5.1 · 10^-31 g cm^-3 = 0.11 Q_c was obtained.     

Unnoticed but important: revealing the hidden contribution of community-based religious institution of the mosque in disasters

The role of community-based religious institutions has been largely undocumented, underestimated and overshadowed in the disaster studies literature. This paper explores the role of the mosque, a community-based religious institution, in disaster management by documenting and analysing its role in rural settings in the aftermath of the 2005 earthquake in Pakistan. The study examines the role of the mosque in relation to key actors from the state, civil society and private sector during response, relief, recovery, reconstruction and rehabilitation phases of the Pakistan earthquake. Using qualitative research methods and a case study design, this article analyses primary data collected through 5 months of fieldwork (in 2009 and 2010). The findings demonstrate the multifaceted and distinct contribution of the mosque in cultural, economic, social and political aspects of the lives of the earthquake-affected communities. Possible challenges to engagement with the mosque, both gender inclusiveness and political controversy around its role, are also raised. This research suggests that state, civil society and private sector actors involved in disaster management need to understand complex relationships involving people and their religious institutions, and their impact on the social dimension of recovery. The findings of the study contribute to the scarce knowledge about the role of community-based religious institutions including churches, mosques, synagogues and temples and call for engagement: that is, acknowledging and valuing their role for building a synergy between secular and religious efforts for disaster risk reduction and post-disaster recovery.     

Natural realgar and amorphous AsS oxidation kinetics

The oxidation rates of natural realgar and amorphous synthetic AsS by dissolved oxygen were evaluated using mixed flow reactors at pH 7.2 to 8.8 and dissolved oxygen contents of 5.9 to 16.5 ppm over a temperature range of 25 to 40°C. The ratios of As/S are stoichiometric for all amorphous AsS oxidation experiments except for two experiments conducted at pH ∼8.8. In these experiments, stoichiometric ratios of As/S were only observed in the early stages of AsS (am) oxidation whereas lower As/S ratios were observed during steady state. For realgar oxidation experiments, the As/S ratio is less than the stoichiometric ratio of realgar, ranging between 0.61 and 0.71. This nonstoichiometric release of As and S to solution indicates that realgar oxidation is more selective for S after the rates of oxidation become constant. Drop dimensions in Cb-clouds and general meteorological circumstances

Summary During test flights over the North Sea with the Fokker Friendship several cloud spectra have been determined. Seven of them, related to cumulonimbus clouds show that the width of the droplet spectrum can be related to the speed of surface wind. The high correlations cannot be explained completely by the fact that marine condensation nuclei tend to grow with increasing wind. Obviously increased turbulence also plays a role.     

Geostatistical regionalization of glacial aquitard thickness in northwestern Germany, based on fuzzy kriging

In many instances hydrogeological parameters obtained by conventional methods for selected localities within an aquifer or an aquitard are not sufficient for adequate regionalization at the scale of the entire layer. Here, we demonstrate an application of the fuzzy kriging method in regionalization of hydrogeological data, in which the set of conventional, crisp values is supplemented by imprecise information subjectively estimated by an expert. It is believed that such an approach eventually may reflect the real-world conditions more closely than a traditional crisp-value approach, because the former does not impose exactness artificially on phenomena which are diffuse by their nature. Spatial interpolation was done for the thickness of one of the major aquitards (till and glaciolacustrine clay) in northwestern Germany. The dataset consists of 329 crisp values from boreholes supplemented by 172 imprecise values defined as fuzzy numbers. It is demonstrated that the reliability of regionalization was higher, compared to regionalization performed with the crisp dataset only. Fuzzy kriging was performed with FUZZEKS (Fuzzy Evaluation and Kriging System) developed at the Ecosystem Research Center at the University of Kiel.     

Zur Deckentektonik des Hochbalkans

Zusammenfassung Im Botewgebiet der Stara Planina (Hochbalkan) liegt inmitten paläozoischer, mesozoischer und tertiärer Schichten ein 30 km langer und 12 km breiter Granitkomplex, der als autochthone Einheit, aber auch als Deckscholle gedeutet worden ist. Die Deckennatur des Komplexes wird durch die großtektonischen Verhältnisse eindeutig belegt. Der Bewegungsplan besitzt meridionale Symmetrie, die tektonischen Haupttransporte erfolgten von S nach N. Groß- und Kleingefüge entsprechen einander. Das Liegende der Decke besitzt keine einheitliche Prägung. Diskordante Lagerungsverhältnisse lassen variszische, kimmerische, kretazische, laramische und pyrenäische Bewegungen erkennen.
