Peralkaline rhyolites of the Greater Olkaria Volcanic Complex, Kenya Rift Valley, were derived from separated, though closely related, magma chambers. Ion microprobe analyses of glass inclusions in quartz phenocrysts show pre-eruptive water contents of up to 3.4 wt% contrasting with previous estimates that the magmas were anhydrous. The values approach predicted solubility levels corresponding to water saturation at low crustal pressures (1 kbar). The glass matrices of the rhyolites have low water contents, ranging from 0.07 to 0.46 wt%, suggesting significant degassing during, or prior to, eruption. Infrared measurements of the matrix glasses show variation in the relative proportions of the two hydrous species dissolved in the glasses. The amount of molecular water, determined semi-quantitatively, apparently increases with increased fluorine content and peralkalinity. This suggests a competition between hydroxyl groups and fluoride ions for similar sites within the melt structure. The mechanism of degassing has been investigated using hydrogen isotopes. The range of D values in most rocks can be produced by varied degrees of open-system degassing of rhyolite melt initially in equilibrium with water of a fixed, or limited, D value. There is evidence to suggest that closed-system degassing may also have been a significant component in some rhyolites. The exact mechanisms of degassing remain uncertain. Particular problems include the relative contribution of open-and closed-system degassing during eruption and the initial vapour compositions and solubility relationships.  相似文献

Highly turbid alkali feldspars from the Loch Ainort granite (59 Ma), Isle of Skye, have been analysed using the 40Ar-39Ar method to obtain chronological and chemical (K, Cl, Br, I) information concerning their origin and hydrothermal alteration. Three methods of gas extraction have been applied to neutron-irradiated samples: laser probe spot fusion of feldspars, in vacuo crushing of a feldspar/quartz separate, and laser stepped heating of the crushed residue. Apparent ages obtained by laser probe spot fusion are mostly similar to the 59 Ma intrusion age. Analyses of relatively pristine regions give some high apparent ages (>59 Ma) indicating the presence of small amounts of 40ArE (excess 40Ar). Crushing releases significant amounts of 40ArE, but is dominated by an 40ArA (atmospheric 40Ar) component. 84Kr/36Ar values obtained by crushing are higher than air and are consistent with air equilibration with fresh water at low temperature 20°C). Therefore, 40ArA was most probably introduced as palaeoatmospheric argon dissolved in the circulating hydrothermal fluids that interacted with the granite, thus supporting a meteoric origin for the fluids. Stepped heating gives a flat age spectrum and an age of 56±4 Ma. Crushing and stepped heating both released significant amounts of halogens with high Br/Cl and I/Cl ratios; excess Xe is also present as indicated by the high 132Xe/36Ar values. It seems likely that the halogen (and possibly Xe) enrichments resulted from interaction of the meteoric fluids with Jurassic sedimentary country rocks.  相似文献

Thirty-two northern Florida lakes were analyzed to construct a transfer function relating surface sediment diatom assemblages to lakewater pH (R 2 =0.89, s.e.=0.34). A paleoecological analysis of sediment cores from six of these lakes indicated that two have become more acidic in the last 50 years. The diatom inferred (DI) pH of L. Barco has declined between 0.56–0.82 in the 1900's and DI ANC (acid neutralizing capacity) by 28–46 eq l-1. The DI pH of nearby L. Suggs has declined 0.91 pH units and its DI ANC by 19 eq l-1. The timing of the inferred acidification is synchronous with known increases in emissions of sulfates and nitrates that are associated with acidic precipitation. Also, the increasing accumulation of substances related to emissions from the burning of fossil fuels (e.g., Pb, PAH) co-occurs with the lowering of DI pH in the sedimentary record. However, other processes may have accounted for or contributed to recent lake acidification. For instance, the drawdown of local water tables by human consumption may decrease the inseepage of ANC to seepage lakes. Such an effect would be synchronous with increasing depositions of sulfate. There is also clear evidence that Florida lakes are naturally acidic. Thus, paleoecological results indicate acidic deposition to be at certain contributor, but not necessarily the sole cause, of the recent further acidification of some naturally acidic Florida lakes.This is the tenth of a series of papers to be published by this journal which is a contribution of the Paleoecological Investigation of Recent Lake Acidification (PIRLA) project. Economic losses during past earthquakes are strongly associated with damage and failure to nonstructural equipment and contents. Among the vast types of nonstructural elements, one important category, is scientific equipment in biological or chemical laboratories. These equipment are often mounted on heavy ceramic bench‐tops of bench–shelf systems, which in turn may amplify the dynamic motions imposed. To investigate the seismic response of these types of systems, a series of shake table and field experiments were conducted considering different representative bench and shelf‐mounted equipment and contents. Results from shake table experiments indicate that these equipment are generally sliding‐dominated. In addition, the bench–shelf system is observed to be very stiff and when lightly loaded, has a fundamental frequency between 10 and 16 Hz. An approximate 50% reduction in the first and second fundamental frequencies is observed considering practical loading conditions. Insight into a broader range of system response is provided by conducting eigenvalue and time history analyses. Non‐linear regression through the numerical data indicate acceleration amplification ratios Ω range from 2.6 to 1.4 and from 4.3 to 1.6, for fixed–fixed and pinned–pinned conditions, respectively. Both the experimental and numerical results support the importance of determining the potential dynamic amplification of motion in the context of accurately determining the maximum sliding displacement of support equipment and contents. We have observed a sample of 149 Seyfert galaxies and radio-quiet quasars at 13 cm with both a 275-km radio interferometer and the 6-km compact array of the Australia Telescope. The high-resolution observations searched for the presence of compact, high-brightness-temperature radio emission from the active nucleus. The low-resolution observations measured the total radio emission from the galaxy disc and Seyfert core and lobes. From these we draw the following conclusions. (i) Seyfert galaxies that lack compact radio cores display a correlation between radio and far-infrared (FIR) emission similar to the correlation displayed by normal spirals, albeit with greater scatter. The correlation is found to be intrinsic and is not an artefact of the richness effect. (ii) A very different radio–FIR correlation is displayed by those Seyferts that harbour compact radio cores. These tend to be more radio-loud than either normal spirals or the Seyferts that lack compact cores. The compact core emission thus seems to be responsible for the generally poor radio–FIR correlation displayed by Seyfert galaxies. (iii) The radio–FIR correlation is not significantly improved by subtracting off the 0.1-arcsec (20- to 200-pc) compact radio emission from the total radio emission. This suggests that the emission from the active galactic nucleus has significant structure on scales larger than 0.1 arcsec. Perhaps these structures are the 'linear' radio features that have been seen previously in Seyfert nuclei.  相似文献

Three principal components were found to underlie Texas university students' experiences with and attitudes toward Canada, the United States, and Mexico: diversity orientation, Mexican experiences, and Canadian experiences. Diversity orientation included positive attitudes toward Hispanics, Canadians, minorities, interethnic friendships, and dating and was negatively correlated with natio‐centrism (e.g., believing U.S. citizens receive the world's best education). Diversity orientation and natio‐centrism were not related to experiences with Mexico or Canada. Students estimated the locations of Canadian cities too far north and Mexican cities too far south. Biased estimates for Mexican cities were negatively correlated with diversity orientation, not experience with Mexico.  相似文献

The effect of solid convection on the thermal evolution of the Moon is explored for a variety of viscosities, radioactive differentiation efficiencies and initial temperature profiles. Convective heat flux in the models is calculated using an empirical relation derived from the results of laboratory experiments and numerical solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations. The method retains the spherically symmetric approximation and, therefore, greatly facilitates numerical calculations.Results show that even though solid convection may determine the thermal state of the lunar interior, it does not necessarily produce a quasi-steady thermal balance between heat sources and surface loss. An imbalance persists, due to the cooling and growth of the nonconvecting lithosphere. The state of the lithosphere is sensitive to the efficiency of heat source redistribution, while that of the convecting interior depends primarily on rheology. Convecting models have viscosities of 1021–1022 cm2s?1 in their interiors; the central temperature must be above 1100°C. Convection occurring within the first billion years after formation could have led to mare flooding by magma produced in hot zones of convection cells. However, it cannot be shown from model calculations alone that solid convection must have dominated lunar thermal history.  相似文献

The Middle Miocene Monowai Formation represents a gravel delta that prograded south into a flysch basin complex developed along the Moonlight Tectonic Zone, southern New Zealand. The delta-slope environment was characterized by a conglomeratic sequence up to 500 m thick. Most of the gravel was moved downslope by mass-transport processes. A complete spectrum exists from synsedimentary slide sheets (up to 10 m thick and 100 m long) that retain pre-sliding sedimentary structures, to more mature mass-transported sediment types in which all original structures have been destroyed. The most distal deposits include ungraded homogeneous pebble conglomerates up to 3 m thick. Some of the more mature redeposited conglomerate-sand-mud units (XYZ sequences) are between 2 and 10 m thick; they comprise a basal X-division of bouldery conglomerate, a middle Y-division of pebbly mudstone or pebbly sandstone, and an upper Z-division of hydroplastically folded mudstone. Though XYZ sequences may have been deposited from very proximal turbidity or fluxoturbidity currents, inertia-flow emplacement seems more likely. An inertia-flow mode of emplacement also seems most probable for the other redeposited sediment types described from the Monowai Formation.  相似文献

The sedimentary pyrite deposit of Amjhore, Bihar associated with the Bijaigarh Shale of the Upper Vindhyan Group (Proterozoic age) exhibits characteristic syndepositional features suggestive of both calm and disturbed conditions of deposition.
