A method for rapid evaluation of magnetic anomalies over thin sheets is presented. This method is based on characteristic distancesX 3/4,X 1/2,X 1/4 at which the anomaly falls off to 3/4, 1/2, and 1/4 of the total (peak to peak) amplitude, respectively. Simple mathematical relations using these characteristic distances are presented to estimate the death and dip of the sheet. This method is fast and does not require prior knowledge of the base level and the origin. A few field examples are included to show the applicability and efficacy of the method. 相似文献

Many large rivers around the world no longer flow to their deltas, due to ever greater water withdrawals and diversions for human needs. However, the importance of riparian ecosystems is drawing increasing recognition, leading to the allocation of environmental flows to restore river processes. Accurate estimates of riparian plant evapotranspiration (ET) are needed to understand how the riverine system responds to these rare events and achieve the goals of environmental flows. In 2014, historic environmental flows were released into the Lower Colorado River at Morelos Dam (Mexico); this once perennial but now dry reach is the final stretch to the mighty Colorado River Delta. One of the primary goals was to supply native vegetation restoration sites along the reach with water to help seedlings establish and boost groundwater levels to foster the planted saplings. Patterns in ET before, during, and after the flows are useful for evaluating whether this goal was met and understanding the role that ET plays in this now ephemeral river system. Here, diurnal fluctuations in groundwater levels and Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) data were used to compare estimates of ET specifically at 3 native vegetation restoration sites during 2014 planned flow events, and MODIS data were used to evaluate long‐term (2002–2016) ET responses to restoration efforts at these sites. Overall, ET was generally 0–10 mm d?1 across sites, and although daily ET values from groundwater data were highly variable, weekly averaged estimates were highly correlated with MODIS‐derived estimates at most sites. The influence of the 2014 flow events was not immediately apparent in the results, although the process of clearing vegetation and planting native vegetation at the restoration sites was clearly visible in the results. 相似文献

Joint inversion of teleseismic P-waveforms and local group velocities of surface waves retrieved from ambient seismic noise
has been performed to model velocity structure of the crust and uppermost mantle of the Bohemian Massif. We analysed P-waveforms
of 381 teleseismic earthquakes recorded at 54 broadband seismic stations located on the territory of the Czech Republic and
in its close surroundings. Group velocities of Rayleigh and Love surface waves were obtained by cross-correlating long-term
recordings of seismic noise. The basis for waveform inversion is the well-known methodology of P-to-S receiver functions constructed
from converted phases. Due to instabilities in direct inversion of receiver functions caused by the necessity of applying
deconvolution, we propose an alternative formulation to fit observed and calculated radial components of P waveforms. The
joint inversion is transformed into a search for the minimum of the cost function defined as a weighted sum of waveform and
group velocity misfits. With the use of the robust stochastic optimizer (Differential Evolution Algorithm), neither derivatives
nor a starting model are needed. The task was solved for 1D layered isotropic models of the crust and the uppermost mantle.
We have performed a sequence of inversions with models containing one, two, three and four layers above a half-space. By using
statistical criteria (F-test) we were able to select the simplest velocity models satisfying data and representing local geological
structures. Complex crustal models are typical for stations located close to boundaries of major tectonic units. The relatively
low average P to S wave-velocity ratio is in agreement with the generally accepted view that the BM crust is predominantly

Altitude profile of aerosol Single Scattering Albedo (SSA), derived from simultaneous in-situ airborne measurements of the coefficients of aerosol absorption and scattering off the west coast of India over the Arabian Sea (AS), during January 2009 is presented. While both the absorption and scattering coefficients decreased with altitude, their vertical structure differed significantly. Consequently, the derived SSA, with a surface value of 0.94, decreased with altitude, illustrating increasing relative dominance of aerosol absorption at higher altitudes. Altitude profile of SSA, when examined in conjunction with that of hemispheric backscatter fraction, revealed that the continental influence on the aerosol properties was higher at higher altitude, rather than the effect of marine environment. During an east–west transect across the peninsular India at an altitude of ~2500 m (free troposphere), it was found that the aerosol scattering coefficients remained nearly the same over both east and west coasts. 相似文献

ABSTRACTA reliable modelling framework needs to ensure that the model is simulating reality with limited uncertainty, thus enhancing its predictive ability. In the literature, hydrological model assessment using one or more metrics is reported to be inadequate when the river flow regime is required to be reproduced comprehensively. This research is aimed to: (a) calibrate the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) based on the concept of multi-objective optimization by applying the Borg multi-objective evolutionary algorithm (MOEA); (b) apply hydrological signatures as objective functions; and (c) adopt a multi-metric approach for model evaluation. The SWAT model was coupled with a relatively newer and powerful Borg MOEA. The inclusion of hydrological signatures as objective functions along with the conventional statistical functions assisted in improving the performance for low flows by 135% in terms of volume efficiency and 65% for flow time series simulation. 相似文献

The Son-Narmada-Tapti lineament and its surroundings of Central India (CI) is the second most important tectonic regime following the converging margin along Himalayas-Myanmar-Andaman of the Indian sub-continent, which attracted several geoscientists to assess its seismic hazard potential. Our study area, a part of CI, is bounded between latitudes 18°–26°N and longitudes 73°–83°E, representing a stable part of Peninsular India. Past damaging moderate magnitude earthquakes as well as continuing microseismicity in the area provided enough data for seismological study. Our estimates based on regional Gutenberg–Richter relationship showed lower b values (i.e., between 0.68 and 0.76) from the average for the study area. The Probabilistic Seismic Hazard Analysis carried out over the area with a radius of ~300 km encircling Bhopal yielded a conspicuous relationship between earthquake return period (T) and peak ground acceleration (PGA). Analyses of T and PGA shows that PGA value at bedrock varies from 0.08 to 0.15 g for 10 % (T = 475 years) and 2 % (T = 2,475 years) probabilities exceeding 50 years, respectively. We establish the empirical relationships $ {\text{ZPA}}_{(T = 475)} = 0.1146\;[V_{\text{s}} (30)]^{ - 0.2924}, $ and $ {\text{ZPA}}_{(T = 2475)} = 0.2053\;[V_{\text{s}} (30)]^{ - 0.2426} $ between zero period acceleration (ZPA) and shear wave velocity up to a depth of 30 m [V s (30)] for the two different return periods. These demonstrate that the ZPA values decrease with increasing shear wave velocity, suggesting a diagnostic indicator for designing the structures at a specific site of interest. The predictive designed response spectra generated at a site for periods up to 4.0 s at 10 and 2 % probability of exceedance of ground motion for 50 years can be used for designing duration dependent structures of variable vertical dimension. We infer that this concept of assimilating uniform hazard response spectra and predictive design at 10 and 2 % probability of exceedance in 50 years at 5 % damping at bedrocks of different categories may offer potential inputs for designing earthquake resistant structures of variable dimensions for the CI region under the National Earthquake Hazard Reduction Program for India. 相似文献

The surface of the bacterial cells before the biosorption of Zn(II) ion has been found rough, heterogeneous, and non‐crystalline together with tremendous protrusions and negatively charged functional groups. The bacterium was characterized as rod shaped with Gram‐negative type of cell wall structure. In reaction dynamics, pseudo‐second‐order kinetics with higher linear correlation coefficient (R2) ranging between 0.97 and 0.99, lower sum of square errors (SSE) (0.035–0.081) and chi (χ2) (0.0013–0.009) provided a better explanation of sorption of Zn(II) ion on bacterium surface as compared to pseudo‐first‐order model. The removal of Zn(II) was governed by both film and intra‐particle diffusion at onset and later stage of sorption of metal ion on the surface of bacterial cells. The R2 (0.92–0.94) for intra‐particle diffusion model was quite higher with lower values of SSE (9.56–16.33) and chi (χ2) (11.26–19.65) against the Bangham's model. The positive value of ΔH (16.628 × 10?6 kJ/mol) and ΔS (5320.90 kJ/mol/K) showed that the biosorption of Zn(II) ion across liquid phase on bacterial surface was endothermic with increased randomness at solid–liquid interface. The negative values of ΔG demarcated the whole process as spontaneous in nature. In the present work, the distribution coefficient was found to be > 0.5 at various temperature ranges. At the attainment of equilibrium, the residual concentration of Zn(II) ion in liquid phase was around 0.6 mg/L, which was much below the limit described by United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA), i.e. 5 mg/L. 相似文献

The organic compounds released from the Murchison carbonaceous chondrite following vaporization-pyrolysis at 150, 300 and 430°C were investigated. The total organic yield was 272 ppm and consisted of n-alkanes, alkenes, aromatic hydrocarbons and thioaromatics. The composition and yield at all three temperatures are compared with those obtained by an identical analysis on another carbonaceous chondrite, Allende, and two terrestrial rocks.Comparison of compounds released by 150°C volatilization of Murchison and Allende reveals remarkable similarities, suggesting commonality in the processes responsible for their formation. The origin of the organic compounds found can be explained in terms of the Fischer-Tropsch synthesis followed by partial equilibration of the primary products. However, problems concerning the relationship between types of carbonaceous chondrites remain unresolved. 相似文献
