Having analyzed the spectrum of the quasar PKS 1232+0.82 taken by Petitjean et al. (2000), we identified HD molecular lines in an absorption system at redshift z=2.3377. We estimated the column density of HD molecules in this system, N(HD) = (1?4) × 1014cm?2. The excitation temperature of the first rotational level J=1 relative to the ground state J=0 is T ex=70 ± 7 K. As far as we know, this is the first detection of HD molecules at high redshift. 相似文献

We present results from an observation of the luminous cluster of galaxies Abell 2204 using the Chandra X-ray Observatory. We show the core of the cluster has a complex morphological structure, made up of a high-density core ( n e ∼ 0.2 cm−3 ) with flat surface brightness, a surrounding central plateau, a tail-like feature, wrapping around to the east, and an unusual radio source. A temperature map and deprojected profile shows that the temperature rises steeply outside these regions, until around ∼100 kpc where it drops, then rises again. Abundance maps and profiles show that there is a corresponding increase in abundance at the same radius as where the temperature drops. In addition, there are two cold fronts at radii of ∼28 and 54.5 kpc. The disturbed morphology indicates that the cluster core may have undergone a merger. However, despite this disruption, the mean radiative cooling time in the centre is short (∼230 Myr) and the morphology is regular on large scales. 相似文献

The global 21-cm signal from Cosmic Dawn (CD) and the Epoch of Reionization (EoR), at redshifts \(z \sim 6-30\), probes the nature of first sources of radiation as well as physics of the Inter-Galactic Medium (IGM). Given that the signal is predicted to be extremely weak, of wide fractional bandwidth, and lies in a frequency range that is dominated by Galactic and Extragalactic foregrounds as well as Radio Frequency Interference, detection of the signal is a daunting task. Critical to the experiment is the manner in which the sky signal is represented through the instrument. It is of utmost importance to design a system whose spectral bandpass and additive spurious signals can be well calibrated and any calibration residual does not mimic the signal. Shaped Antenna measurement of the background RAdio Spectrum (SARAS) is an ongoing experiment that aims to detect the global 21-cm signal. Here we present the design philosophy of the SARAS 2 system and discuss its performance and limitations based on laboratory and field measurements. Laboratory tests with the antenna replaced with a variety of terminations, including a network model for the antenna impedance, show that the gain calibration and modeling of internal additive signals leave no residuals with Fourier amplitudes exceeding 2 mK, or residual Gaussians of 25 MHz width with amplitudes exceeding 2 mK. Thus, even accounting for reflection and radiation efficiency losses in the antenna, the SARAS 2 system is capable of detection of complex 21-cm profiles at the level predicted by currently favoured models for thermal baryon evolution. 相似文献

Absorption‐line systems detected in high resolution quasar spectra can be used to compare the value of dimensionless fundamental constants such as the fine‐structure constant, α, and the proton‐to‐electron mass ratio, μ = mp/me, as measured in remote regions of the Universe to their value today on Earth. In recent years, some evidence has emerged of small temporal and also spatial variations in α on cosmological scales which may reach a fractional level of ≈ 10 ppm (parts per million). We are conducting a Large Programme of observations with the Very Large Telescope's Ultraviolet and Visual Echelle Spectrograph (UVES), and are obtaining high‐resolution (R ≈ 60000) and high signal‐to‐noise ratio (S/N ≈ 100) spectra calibrated specifically to study the variations of the fundamental constants. We here provide a general overview of the Large Programme and report on the first results for these two constants, discussed in detail in Molaro et al. (2013) and Rahmani et al. (2013). A stringent bound for Δα /α is obtained for the absorber at zabs = 1.6919 towards HE 2217‐2818. The absorption profile is complex with several very narrow features, and is modeled with 32 velocity components. The relative variation in α in this system is +1.3 ± 2.4stat ± 1.0sys ppm if Al II λ 1670 Å and three FeII transitions are used, and +1.1 ± 2.6stat ppm in a slightly different analysis with only FeII transitions used. This is one of the tightest bounds on α ‐variation from an individual absorber and reveals no evidence for variation in α at the 3‐ppm precision level (1σ confidence). The expectation at this sky position of the recently‐reported dipolar variation of α is (3.2–5.4) ± 1.7 ppm depending on dipole model used and this constraint of Δα /α at face value is not supporting this expectation but not inconsistent with it at the 3σ level. For the proton‐to‐electron mass ratio the analysis of the H2 absorption lines of the zabs ≈ 2.4018 damped Lyα system towards HE 0027–1836 provides Δμ /μ = (–7.6 ± 8.1stat ± 6.3sys) ppm which is also consistent with a null variation. The cross‐correlation analysis between individual exposures taken over three years and comparison with almost simultaneous asteroid observations revealed the presence of a possible wavelength dependent velocity drift as well as of inter‐order distortions which probably dominate the systematic error and are a significant obstacle to achieve more accurate measurements. Among the many spectral lines falling in the ultraviolet are the resonance doublets of the highly ionized species O VI, N V, C IV, and Si IV. By using both space-based UV observations and ground-based optical observations, these lines can be used to trace diffuse astrophysical plasma over a large fraction of the age of the Universe. In this paper we discuss observations of these absorption lines in damped Lyman-α systems at z≈2–3, using the UVES spectrograph on the VLT in Chile. 相似文献
