The development of petrogenetic models of igneous processes in the mantle is dependent on a detailed knowledge of the diversity of magmas produced in the melting regime. These primary magmas, however, undergo significant mixing and fractionation during transport to the surface, destroying much of the evidence of their primary diversity. To circumvent this problem and to determine the diversity of melts produced in the mantle, we used melt inclusions hosted in primitive plagioclase phenocrysts from eight mid-ocean ridge basalts from the axial and West Valleys of the Endeavour Segment, Juan de Fuca Ridge. This area was selected for study because of the demonstrated close association of enriched (E-MORB) lavas and incompatible element enriched depleted (N-MORB) lavas. Rehomogenized melt inclusions from E-MORB, T-MORB, and N-MORB lavas have been analyzed by electron and ion microprobe for major and trace elements. The depleted and enriched lavas, as well as their melt inclusions, have very similar compatible element concentrations (major elements, Sr, Ni and Cr). Inclusion compositions are more primitive than, yet collinear with, the host lava suites. In contrast, the minor and trace element characteristics of melt inclusions from depleted and enriched lavas are different both in range and absolute concentration. N-MORB lavas contain both depleted and enriched melt inclusions, and therefore exhibit the largest compositional range (K2O: 0.01 to 0.4 oxide wt%, P2O5: <0.01 to 0.2 oxide wt%, LaN: 7 to 35, YbN: 1 to 13, and Ti/Zr: <100 to 1300). E-MORB lavas contain only enriched inclusions, and are therefore relatively homogeneous (K2O: 0.32 to 0.9 oxide wt %, P2O5: 0.02 to 0.35 oxide wt%, LaN: 11 to 60, YbN: 4 to 21, and Ti/Zr: ∼100). In addition, the most primitive E-32 inclusions are similar in composition to the most enriched inclusions from the depleted hosts. Major element data for melt inclusions from both N-MORB and E-MORB lavas suggest that the magmas lie on a low pressure cotectic, consistent with a petrogenesis including fractional crystallization. However, the minor and trace element compositions in melt inclusions vary independently of the major element composition implying an alternative history. When fractionation-corrected, inclusion compositions correlate with their host glass composition. Hence, the degree of enrichment of the lavas is a function of the composition of aggregated melts, not of processing in the upper mantle or lower crust. Based on this fact, the lava suites are not produced from a single parent magma, but from a suite of primary magmas. The chemistry of the melt inclusions from the enriched lavas is consistent with a derivation from variable percentages of partial melting within the spinel stability field by a process of open system (continuous or critical) melting assuming a depleted lherzolite source veined with clinopyroxenite. The low percentage melts are dominantly enriched melts of the clinopyroxenite. In contrast, the depleted lavas were created by melting of a harzburgite source, possibly fluxed with a fluid enriched in K, Ba and the LREE. Such a source was likely melted up to or past the point at which all of its clinopyroxene was consumed. This set of characteristics is consistent with a scenario by which diverse melts produced at different depths travel through the melting regime to the base of the crust without homogenizing en route. The homogeneous major element characteristics are created in the lower crust by fractional crystallization and reaction with lower crustal gabbros. Therefore, the degree of decoupling between major and trace element characteristics of the melt inclusions (and lavas) is dictated by the reaction rate of the melts with the materials in the conduit walls, as well as the residence times and flux rate, in the upper mantle and lower crust. Using semi-analytic models of galaxy formation, we investigate galaxy properties such as the Tully–Fisher relation, the B - and K -band LFs, cold gas contents, sizes, metallicities and colours, and compare our results with observations of local galaxies. We investigate several different recipes for star formation and supernova feedback, including choices that are similar to the treatment by Kauffmann, White & Guiderdoni and Cole et al., as well as some new recipes. We obtain good agreement with all of the key local observations mentioned above. In particular, in our best models, we simultaneously produce good agreement with both the observed B - and K -band LFs and the I -band Tully–Fisher relation. Improved cooling and supernova feedback modelling, inclusion of dust extinction and an improved Press–Schechter model all contribute to this success. We present results for several variants of the CDM family of cosmologies, and find that models with values of Ω0≃0.3–0.5 give the best agreement with observations.  相似文献

Since 1981 we have been operating the Birmingham Solar-Oscillations Network (BiSON), a global network of resonant-scattering spectrometers, observing the low-l solar p modes. Here we discuss historical developments, culminating in the establishment of a 6-station network in 1992 September, and the subsequent performance of that network. The data record of each station from 1992 to 1994 has been analysed in terms of weather and equipment breakdowns. Our early experience suggests that the best long-term coverage possible with a 6-station network is limited in practice to about 80%, which falls short of previous predictions.  相似文献

Understanding the pace and drivers of marine-based ice-sheet retreat relies upon the integration of numerical ice-sheet models with observations from contemporary polar ice sheets and well-constrained palaeo-glaciological reconstructions. This paper provides a reconstruction of the retreat of the last British–Irish Ice Sheet (BIIS) from the Atlantic shelf west of Ireland during and following the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM). It uses marine-geophysical data and sediment cores dated by radiocarbon, combined with terrestrial cosmogenic nuclide and optically stimulated luminescence dating of onshore ice-marginal landforms, to reconstruct the timing and rate of ice-sheet retreat from the continental shelf and across the adjoining coastline of Ireland, thus including the switch from a marine- to a terrestrially-based ice-sheet margin. Seafloor bathymetric data in the form of moraines and grounding-zone wedges on the continental shelf record an extensive ice sheet west of Ireland during the LGM which advanced to the outer shelf. This interpretation is supported by the presence of dated subglacial tills and overridden glacimarine sediments from across the Porcupine Bank, a westwards extension of the Irish continental shelf. The ice sheet was grounded on the outer shelf at ~26.8 ka cal bp with initial retreat underway by 25.9 ka cal bp. Retreat was not a continuous process but was punctuated by marginal oscillations until ~24.3 ka cal bp. The ice sheet thereafter retreated to the mid-shelf where it formed a large grounding-zone complex at ~23.7 ka cal bp. This retreat occurred in a glacimarine environment. The Aran Islands on the inner continental shelf were ice-free by ~19.5 ka bp and the ice sheet had become largely terrestrially based by 17.3 ka bp. This suggests that the Aran Islands acted to stabilize and slow overall ice-sheet retreat once the BIIS margin had reached the inner shelf. Our results constrain the timing of initial retreat of the BIIS from the outer shelf west of Ireland to the period of minimum global eustatic sea level. Initial retreat was driven, at least in part, by glacio-isostatically induced, high relative sea level. Net rates of ice-sheet retreat across the shelf were slow (62–19 m a−1) and reduced (8 m a−1) as the ice sheet vacated the inner shelf and moved onshore. A picture therefore emerges of an extensive BIIS on the Atlantic shelf west of Ireland, in which early, oscillatory retreat was followed by slow episodic retreat which decelerated further as the ice margin became terrestrially based. More broadly, this demonstrates the importance of localized controls, in particular bed topography, on modulating the retreat of marine-based sectors of ice sheets.  相似文献

High-resolution (0.34 nm) reflectance spectra of a suite of terrestrial ortho- and clinopyroxenes were characterized in the 506-nm region. This region exhibits absorption bands attributed to spin-forbidden transitions in Fe2+ located in the M2, and possibly M1, crystallographic site(s). The most intense absorption bands (up to 3.8% deep in <45 μm fractions) are present in low Ca-content orthopyroxene spectra. This region exhibits two (spectral Group I) or more (spectral Group II) absorption bands in the 500-515 nm interval. Group I spectra are associated with the lowest Ca-content samples. For orthopyroxenes, the number of constituent absorption bands and band depths vary as a function of Ca content; increasing Ca content results the appearance of more than two absorption bands and a general reduction in band depths, offsetting an expected increase in band depth with increasing Fe2+ content; band depths may also be reduced due to the long wavelength wing of ultraviolet region Fe-O charge transfer absorptions. Band depths and shapes in this region are also a function of grain size, with the strongest bands appearing for larger grain sizes - in the 90-250 μm range. The number and position of constituent absorption bands can be used to constrain factors such as cooling rates, as expressed in the formation of Guinier-Preston zones versus coarser-grained augite exsolution lamellae. Band depths in the spectra of fine-grained (<45 μm) clinopyroxenes do not exceed 1% and are generally lowest for spectral type A clinopyroxenes, where most of the Fe2+ is present in the M1 crystallographic site. The appearance of the 506 nm band in the spectra of pyroxene-bearing asteroids can be used to constrain pyroxene composition and structure. The results of this study suggest that detailed analysis of absorption features in the 506 nm region is a powerful tool for determining the composition and structure of pyroxenes. The spectral resolution of the VIR-MS spectrometer aboard the Dawn spacecraft - which will examine Asteroid 4 Vesta, a body possessing surficial pyroxenes - will be sufficient to provide some constraints on pyroxene composition.  相似文献

ICZM (Integrated Coastal Zone Management) is a decision-making process for sustainable use, development and protection of coastal marine areas and their resources, in continuous realization. Norway is currently dependent upon the commitment and motivations of the municipalities to fulfill its ICZM initiatives. These communities are lacking epistemic communities that can help prevent the simmering conflicts surrounding aquaculture expansion, as demonstrated by media data from 1984–2010. With the forthcoming harvest of the zooplankton redfeed in Norwegian and surrounding waters, the Aquaculture industry could be in a situation of expanded feed resources, which would ensure its expansion if localities are made available. This would also be in line with the Norwegian government's commitment to the expansion of this industry. A government-endorsed growth of the Aquaculture industry will add fuel to these simmering conflicts concerning the use of the eco-system of collective goods and services available along national coastline in Norway for Aquaculture purposes. The suggestions from the recently released report from the Select Committee appointed by the Ministry of Fisheries and Coastal Affairs in Norway on Effective and Sustainable Area Use in the Aquaculture Industry cab be an aid to supporting the growth of epistemic communities and a subsequent successful national ICZM implementation, thereby paving the way for a conflict-less coastal area management.  相似文献

The Arabian Sea is subject to intense seasonality resulting from biannual monsoons, which lead to associated large particulate fluxes and an abundance of organic carbon, a potential food source at the seafloor for benthic detritivores. We used the stable isotopes of carbon and nitrogen alongside lipid analyses to examine potential food sources (particulate and sedimentary organic matter, POM and SOM respectively) in order to determine trophic linkages for the twelve most abundant megafaunal species (Pontocaris sp., Solenocera sp., Munidopsis aff. scobina, Actinoscyphia sp., Actinauge sp., Echinoptilum sp., Pennatula aff. grandis, Astropecten sp. Amphiura sp. Ophiura euryplax, Phormosoma placenta and Hyalinoecia sp.) at the Pakistan Margin between 140 and 1400 m water depth. This transect spans a steep gradient in oxygen concentrations and POM flux. Ranges of δ13C and δ15N values were narrow in POM and SOM (4‰ and 2‰ for δ13C and δ15N, respectively) with little evidence of temporal variability. Labile lipid compounds in SOM originating from phytoplankton did exhibit seasonal change in their concentrations at the shallowest sites, 140 and 300 m. Benthic megafauna had broad ranges in δ13C and δ15N (>10‰ and >8‰ for δ13C and δ15N, respectively) suggesting they occupy several trophic levels and utilize a variety of food sources. There is evidence for feeding niche separation between and within trophic groups. Lipid biomarkers in animal tissues indicate a mixture of food sources originating from both phytoplankton (C20:5(n-3) and C22:6(n-3)) and invertebrate prey (C20:1 and C22:1). Biomarkers originating from phytodetritus are conserved through trophic transfer to the predator/scavengers. Six species (Pontocaris sp., Solenocera sp., Actinoscyphia sp., Echinoptilum sp., Amphiura sp. and Hyalinoecia sp.) showed a significant biochemical response to the seasonal supply of food and probably adapt their trophic strategy to low food availability. Biotransformation of assimilated lipids by megafauna is evident from polyunsaturated fatty acid distributions, for example, Echinoptilum sp. converts C20:5(n-3) to C24:6(n-3).  相似文献

The chemical and physical treatment mechanisms by which crab shell removes metals from mine impacted water (MIW) were evaluated under anaerobic and biologically limited conditions in closed systems and kinetic tests. Raw (R-SC20) and deproteinized (DP-SC20) crab shell were tested and compared to limestone to quantify the contribution of chitin-associated minerals and proteins to alkalinity generation and metal precipitation. Single-metal closed systems (initial Mn and Fe = 0.18 mM and Al = 0.34 mM) containing 5 g/L of either R- or DP-SC20, yielded an increase in pH from 3 to 9.2-10.2, generation of 0.83-1.87 mM of alkalinity, and resulted in ?95% removal of metals within 72 h. In contrast, 5-125 g limestone/L only raised the pH to 7.8-8.3, produced lower alkalinity (0.56-0.63 mM), and resulted in less metal removal (?85%). In kinetic tests with 5 g-DP-SC20/L, removal of ?95% of the initial metal load was achieved after 0.5, 6, and 48 h for Al, Fe, and Mn, respectively. Geochemical calculations (PHREEQC) indicate that limestone-treated systems were close to equilibrium with calcite (CaCO3), whereas octacalcium phosphate (Ca4H(PO4)3) appears to be a controlling phase in systems treated with R- and DP-SC20. The probable mechanisms for Mn removal are the precipitation of rhodochrosite (MnCO3) and/or sorption. In the case of Al and Fe, geochemical calculations point to the precipitation of hydroxides; however, visual observations in Fe systems suggest the formation of green rust, a precursor of other, more stable phases like goethite or lepidocrocite. Several factors may account for the faster changes observed with R- and DP-SC20 compared to limestone: increased dissolution and degree of supersaturation, the presence of phosphates, the release of organic compounds, and a significantly larger surface area. These results are the first to verify and quantify the capacity of crab shell-associated minerals to treat MIW under biologically limited conditions.  相似文献
