The synthesis of ammonia in the primitive solar nebula was probably catalyzed by metallic iron grains because the gas phase reaction is kinetically inhibited. A preliminary kinetic model predicts a maximum of 3% of the nitrogen in the form of ammonia at the time of planetary accretion. Rates of reaction were derived from industrial data on ammonia iron catalysts. Due to the low rates of reaction, molecular nitrogen remains the dominant species even at the low temperatures where chemical equilibrium favors ammonia formation. Thus planetary atmospheres formed from a reservoir composed largely of molecular nitrogen. The non-equilibrium volatile gases (CO and N2) suggested to comprise most of the carbon and nitrogen in comets is consistent with the model. 相似文献

A method to predict structural damage in its location and severity from modal characteristics of the damaged structure is proposed. No a priori knowledge of the modal characteristics of a corresponding baseline structure is required in the proposed formulation. Instead, information on the geometry of the structure which is reflected in its mass and stiffness distribution is needed. From matrix structural analysis, a system of equations is generated which relates the relative change of stiffness of structural members to a load vector generated from modal parameters of the damaged structure. Different solution techniques are suggested to determine the damage from the generated equations. The feasibility of the proposed formulation is demonstrated via a numerical example of a 10-storey building. Further, an error investigation on the error in the damage predictions due to uncertainties in the input data is carried out. 相似文献

Volatile organic compound (VOC) contamination of subsurface geological material and groundwater was discovered on the Nortel
Monkstown industrial site, Belfast, Northern Ireland. The objectives of this study were to (1) investigate the characteristics
of the geological material and its influences on contaminated groundwater flow across the site using borehole logs and hydrological
evaluations, and (2) identify the contaminants and examine their distribution in the subsurface geological material and groundwater
using chemical analysis. This report focuses on the eastern car park (ECP) which was a former storage area associated with
trichloroethene (TCE) degreasing operations. This is where the greatest amount of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), particularly
TCE, were detected. The study site is on a complex deposit of clayey glacial till with discontinuous coarser grained lenses,
mainly silts, sands and gravel, which occur at 0.45–7.82 m below ground level (bgl). The lenses overall form an elongated
formation that acts as a small unconfined shallow aquifer. There is a continuous low permeable stiff clayey till layer beneath
the lenses that performs as an aquitard to the groundwater. Highest concentrations of VOCs, mainly TCE, in the geological
material and groundwater are in these coarser lenses at ∼4.5–7 m bgl. Highest TCE measurements at 390,000 μg L−1 for groundwater and at 39,000 μg kg−1 at 5.7 m for geological material were in borehole GA19 in the coarse lens zone. It is assumed that TCE gained entrance to
the subsurface near this borehole where the clayey till was thin to absent above coarse lenses which provided little retardation
to the vertical migration of this dense non-aqueous phase liquid (DNAPL) into the groundwater. However, TCE is present in
low concentrations in the geological material overlying the coarse lens zone. Additionally, VOCs appear to be associated with
poorly drained layers and in peat <3.0 m bgl in the ECP. Some indication of natural attenuation as VOCs degradation products
vinyl chloride (VC) and dichloromethane (DCM) also occur on the site. 相似文献

A long-standing question in Paleogene climate concerns the frequency and mechanism of transient greenhouse gas-driven climate shifts (hyperthermals). The discovery of the greenhouse gas-driven Paleocene–Eocene Thermal Maximum (PETM; ~ 55 Ma) has spawned a search for analogous events in other parts of the Paleogene record. On the basis of high-resolution bulk sediment and foraminiferal stable isotope analyses performed on three lower Danian sections of the Atlantic Ocean, we report the discovery of a possible greenhouse gas-driven climatic event in the earliest Paleogene. This event – that we term the Dan-C2 event – is characterized by a conspicuous double negative excursion in δ13C and δ18O, associated with a double spike in increased clay content and decreased carbonate content. This suggests a double period of transient greenhouse gas-driven warming and dissolution of carbonates on the seafloor analogous to the PETM in the early Paleocene at ~ 65.2 Ma. However, the shape of the two negative carbon isotope excursions that make up the Dan-C2 event is different from the PETM carbon isotope profile. In the Dan-C2 event, these excursions are fairly symmetrical and each persisted for about ~ 40 ky and are separated by a short plateau that brings the combined duration to ~ 100 ky, suggesting a possible orbital control on the event. Because of the absence of a long recovery phase, we interpret the Dan-C2 event to have been associated with a redistribution of carbon that was already in the biosphere. The Dan-C2 event and other early Paleogene hyperthermals such as the short-lived early Eocene ELMO event may reflect amplification of a regular cycle in the size and productivity of the marine biosphere and the balance between burial of organic and carbonate carbon. 相似文献

A 200 m thick mudstone unit in the Carboniferous of the Cantabrian Mountains, northern Spain, exhibits an increase in intensity of the slaty cleavage from top to bottom which appears to be correlated with a decrease in the mean grain size, average bed thickness and quartz: mica ratio. Anastomosing cleavage domains, formed by pressure solution and by kinking and rotation of the detrital micas, become closer spaced, wider and more continuous towards the finer-grained base of the unit. Growth of strongly oriented new micas within the cleavage domains also appears to be correlated with the intensity of the domain development and hence with the initial lithology. Clay minerals have been completely replaced throughout the mudstone by muscovite, paragonite and pyrophyllite during low-grade metamorphism. The growth of an oriented mica fabric, however, is restricted to samples with well-developed cleavage domains. 相似文献

The development of high-contrast capabilities has long been recognized as one of the top priorities for the VLTI. As of today, the VLTI routinely achieves contrasts of a few 10??3 in the near-infrared with PIONIER (H band) and GRAVITY (K band). Nulling interferometers in the northern hemisphere and non-redundant aperture masking experiments have, however, demonstrated that contrasts of at least a few 10??4 are within reach using specific beam combination and data acquisition techniques. In this paper, we explore the possibility to reach similar or higher contrasts on the VLTI. After reviewing the state-of-the-art in high-contrast infrared interferometry, we discuss key features that made the success of other high-contrast interferometric instruments (e.g., integrated optics, nulling, closure phase, and statistical data reduction) and address possible avenues to improve the contrast of the VLTI by at least one order of magnitude. In particular, we discuss the possibility to use integrated optics, proven in the near-infrared, in the thermal near-infrared (L and M bands, 3-5 \(\upmu \)m), a sweet spot to image and characterize young extra-solar planetary systems. Finally, we address the science cases of a high-contrast VLTI imaging instrument and focus particularly on exoplanet science (young exoplanets, planet formation, and exozodiacal disks), stellar physics (fundamental parameters and multiplicity), and extragalactic astrophysics (active galactic nuclei and fundamental constants). Synergies and scientific preparation for other potential future instruments such as the Planet Formation Imager are also briefly discussed. The response to warming of tropical low-level clouds including both marine stratocumulus and trade cumulus is a major source of uncertainty in projections of future climate. Climate model simulations of the response vary widely, reflecting the difficulty the models have in simulating these clouds. These inadequacies have led to alternative approaches to predict low-cloud feedbacks. Here, we review an observational approach that relies on the assumption that observed relationships between low clouds and the “cloud-controlling factors” of the large-scale environment are invariant across time-scales. With this assumption, and given predictions of how the cloud-controlling factors change with climate warming, one can predict low-cloud feedbacks without using any model simulation of low clouds. We discuss both fundamental and implementation issues with this approach and suggest steps that could reduce uncertainty in the predicted low-cloud feedback. Recent studies using this approach predict that the tropical low-cloud feedback is positive mainly due to the observation that reflection of solar radiation by low clouds decreases as temperature increases, holding all other cloud-controlling factors fixed. The positive feedback from temperature is partially offset by a negative feedback from the tendency for the inversion strength to increase in a warming world, with other cloud-controlling factors playing a smaller role. A consensus estimate from these studies for the contribution of tropical low clouds to the global mean cloud feedback is 0.25 ± 0.18 W m?2 K?1 (90% confidence interval), suggesting it is very unlikely that tropical low clouds reduce total global cloud feedback. Because the prediction of positive tropical low-cloud feedback with this approach is consistent with independent evidence from low-cloud feedback studies using high-resolution cloud models, progress is being made in reducing this key climate uncertainty. 相似文献
