The paper presents the finite volume formulation and numerical solution of finite strain one‐dimensional consolidation equation. The equation used in this study utilises a nonlinear continuum representation of consolidation with varying compressibility and hydraulic conductivity and thus inherits the material and geometric nonlinearity. Time‐marching explicit scheme has been used to achieve transient solutions. The nonlinear terms have been evaluated with the known previous time step value of the independent variable, that is, void ratio. Three‐point quadratic interpolation function of Lagrangian family has been used to evaluate the face values at discrete control volumes. It has been shown that the numerical solution is stable and convergent for the general practical cases of consolidation. Performance of the numerical scheme has been evaluated by comparing the results with an analytical solution and with the piecewise piecewise‐linear finite difference numerical model. The approach seems to work well and offers excellent potential for simulating finite strain consolidation. Further, the parametric study has been performed on soft organic clays, and the influence of various parameters on the time ate consolidation characteristics of the soil is shown. We have made observations of the as sociated HI absorption of a high redshift radio galaxy 0902+34 atz = 3.395 with the Giant Meterwave Radio Telescope in the 323 ± 1 MHz band. We find a narrow absorption line with a flux density
of 11.5 mJy at a redshift of 3.397 consistent with that observed by Usonet al. (1991), Briggset al. (1993) and de Bruyn (1996). A weak broad absorption feature reported by de Bruyn (1996) has not been detected in our observations.
We also place an upper limit of 4mJy(2σ) on emission line strength at the position where Usonet al. (1991) claimed to have found a narrow emission line. 相似文献

Detailed numerical calculations of thermospheric heat sources and sinks are presented and their relative importance is discussed in reference to the energy balance phenomena of the neutral atmosphere. It is shown that the thermal energy available from the absorption in the Schumann-Runge continuum leading to photo-dissociation of O2 is by far the largest energy source in the lower thermosphere. Other sources of varying importance in different altitude ranges are: (1) energy from photoelectrons; (2) energy exchange from thermal plasma; (3) chemical reaction (ion-electron dissociative recombination) energy gain; (4) kinetic and dissipative energy associated with the neutral wind. The energy sinks of importance are (1) thermal conduction at the lower boundary (120km); and (2) radiative cooling of atomic oxygen.It is shown that the combined energy from processes 2–4 constitutes only a small fraction of the total energy available from photoelectrons and is in phase with the latter. These secondary sources (processes 2–4), therefore, do not constitute a significant energy source and their contribution can be simply incorporated into photoelectron energy (process 1) by defining an effective photo-ionization heating efficiency. The heating efficiencies for photo-ionization (including processes 2–4) and photo-dissociation are estimated to be 0.5 and 0.3, respectively.As the important heat input (photo-dissociation) and loss (conduction and radiation) rates are basically governed by the O2 and O densities, any diurnal or seasonal variation in these constituents at the lower boundary would have profound effects on the thermal structure of the overlying atmosphere. For this and other reasons, it is suggested that a choice of lower boundary much below 120km, e.g. near the mesopause level (90 km), should be more appropriate for general thermospheric studies. 相似文献

The morphological features of Pc5 pulsations during a solar cycle are studied using Fort Churchill data for the years 1962–1972. Some of the characteristics noted are as follows: (1) Increasing sunspot numbers show little influence on the diurnal variation of the occurrence, amplitude and the period except perhaps some noticeable change in the absolute magnitude of these parameters during different hours of the day. (2) The morning occurrence peak dominates during all phases of the solar cycle. (3) As noted earlier (Gupta 1973a), with increasing magnetic activity the day side region(s) of generation of Pc5 is found to shift closer to the subsolar point and in the midnight sector, the occurrence region (presumably the region of open and closed field lines) seemed to shift towards earlier hours with increasing magnetic activity and towards later hours with increasing sunspot numbers. (4) Despite the smaller number of data points for high magnetic activity levels the analysis indicates that the amplitude of Pc5 pulsations is directly related to all the levels of magnetic activity. (5) The periods of Pc5 pulsations show strong correlation with increasing sunspot numbers and the amplitude and occurrences are found to vary in accordance with the magnetic activity all through the cycle. (6) The annual and semi-annual variations of Pc5 parameters have been demonstrated especially for the pulsations occurring in the morning close to 8 ± 1 h LT and for those occurring near the midnight hours. (7) A suspected 27-day recurrence tendency has been clearly noticed for the occurrence, amplitude and period of Pc5 pulsations. 相似文献

The structural differences of the ion and neutral composition in the thermospheric region are studied by solving a system of basic ionospheric and atmospheric equations. The study shows that the compositional changes during a magnetic storm arise largely as a result of changes in the neutral composition at the turbopause. A decrease in [O]/[N2] in the lower atmosphere triggers a complex chain of events which results in an increase of the neutral gas temperature, depletion of the O+ layer and enhancement of NO+. The relative changes in these layers occasionally produce a sequence of electron density profiles giving rise to the so-called G condition. It is shown that, compared to the neutral atmosphere, the ionosphere is much more sensitive to the changes in [O]/[N2] in the lower thernaospheric region. Since the ionospheric parameters can be measured much more accurately than the atmospheric parameters, it is argued that they should form an integral part of the observational data required to construct the atmospheric models. 相似文献

This article describes in detail a burst from PSR 0950+08 on July 29, 1992. This event was observed by two radio telescopes (separated by ~ 200 km) operating at 103 MHz. There exists a very convincing indirect evidence that at the same time the pulsar also emitted large X-ray flux. The X-ray flux during the event compares with that during a solar X-ray flare. During the event the Sun was extraordinarily quiet as the solar X-ray flux 3 · 10–7 W/m2 only was observed. The cause for the burst is quite unknown and may be complex. However, a possibility of accretion of a comet-like object by pulsar may provide reasonable explanation of the observations. These results open some interesting questions about the pulsar physics. 相似文献

Hydrographic data collected from Gulf of Aden since 1920 have been compiled to identify and refine the definitions of water
masses in the Gulf of Aden (GA) and to describe their spatio-temporal variability. Four water masses have been identified
based on their θ-S characteristics. The Red Sea Water (RSW) that flows from the Red Sea is the most prominent water in the GA; this occupies
about 37% of the total volume of Gulf of Aden. The Gulf of Aden Surface Water (∼3%) forms as a mixture of local water and
the water from western Arabian Sea during winter and Red Sea surface water during summer. The intermediate water, identified
as Gulf of Aden Intermediate Water (GAIW), occupies about 9% of the total volume of GA; a characteristic salinity minimum
is associated with it at σθ=26.50 kg m−3. The northward spread of sub-tropical subsurface water from the south appears to be the major source of GAIW. The bottom
water, named Gulf of Aden Bottom Water, showed the least variability. It was formed due to the mixing of Red Sea Water and
water of southern origin. Mixing triangles have been used to analyze the composition of water in the GA. 相似文献
