Abstract. The twaite shad, Alosa agone , is still quite common in Italy and the western Balkans, but locally is endangered or extinct. Two eco-phenotypes are recognized: the migratory'Cheppia'or'Laccia'and the landlocked'Agone'. The two forms have never been in contact, at least in Italy. The migratory form is more endangered since barriers and dams prevent it from reaching upstream spawning grounds. A few reproductive communities are documented, e. g. in the Po River in Italy and Neretva River in Croatia. Resident stocks have increased to substantial populations in the large lakes of Italy, especially in the last ten years, probably as a result of improved water quality. The landlocked form from northern Italy was successfully introduced into lakes of central Italy about 75 years ago. In Sardinia a population derived from the migratory form was established about 80 years ago in the artificial Lake Omodeo. In Croatia the'Cheppia'seems to live only in the lower course of the Neretva River. In Montenegro,'Cheppia'and'Agone'live in sympatry in Lake Skadar, but a dam built in 1960 caused a strong decline of both forms. The twaite shad is a very variable species, able to modify its morphology and biology according to its adaptation to freshwater or marine biotopes. In the Mediterranean area, only one taxon should be then recognized, Alosa agone (Scopoli, 1786). This will replace Alosa fallax (Lacépède, 1803), a taxon described from the Atlantic drainage area which seems to be distinct from Mediterranean populations. A survey of the distribution of reproductive communities of the migrating form in the Mediterranean area must be carried out.  相似文献

Digital marine seismic reflection data acquired in 1973 in the Bay of Pozzuoli, and recently reprocessed, were used to study the volcanological evolution of the marine sector of Campi Flegrei Caldera during the last 37 ka. In order to gain more information, interpretation also involved estimation of the "pseudo-velocity" and the "pseudo-density" from the resistivity logs of two onshore deep exploration wells. The main results are: (1) discovery of ancient pre-18 ka and post-37 ka submarine and mainly effusive volcanic activity, along coeval emission centers located at the edges of Campi Flegrei Caldera; (2) confirmation that the caldera collapse in the marine sector of Campi Flegrei seems strongly controlled by regional NE–SW and NW–SE structural discontinuities; (3) the finding of at least two episodes of collapse in the bay; and (4) identification of a post-18 ka volcanic deflation phase that has caused about 150–200 m of subsidence in the central sector of the Bay of Pozzuoli in the last 18 ka.Editorial responsibilty: T. This paper focuses on the recent tectonic evolution of the Bay of Naples with the aim of exploring the connection between local tectonics and volcanism. We reprocessed the seismic reflection dataset acquired in the area in the late 1973. The new processing was highly successful in obtaining a decisive strong reduction of random noise, removal of coherent noise and reduction of spatial aliasing. Classical interpretative schemes and complex attributes of seismic traces were used to reconstruct fault kinematics and reflector patterns. The results show that the faults affecting the Bay of Naples exhibit prevailing NE structural strikes, with the exception of the Pozzuoli Caldera where NW patterns are also common. Many faults are subvertical and show seismic evidence of volcanic activity along them. A main alignment of conjugate NE–SW faults, named here as “Magnaghi–Sebeto line”, intersects several submarine volcanic banks and separates the bay into two sectors, characterized by important geological, geophysical and petrochemical differences. The structural configuration of the bay may reflect the occurrence of either oblique extension or a transfer zone of the NW–SE fault system, along which, in the Campanian–Lucanian Apennine chain, great vertical displacements occur.  相似文献

The Pretunnel technology allows the final or preliminary lining to be built ahead of a tunnel face. The paper shows how this technology has been used for mechanizing the full-face excavation of large tunnels in difficult ground conditions with minimum settlements. Analytical methods are presented for the analysis of the lining both in deep and shallow applications. Fields of applicability are established using results of parametric studies based on the methods proposed.  相似文献

Arctic permafrost coasts are sensitive to changing climate. The lengthening open water season and the increasing open water area are likely to induce greater erosion and threaten community and industry infrastructure as well as dramatically change nutrient pathways in the near-shore zone. The shallow, mediterranean Arctic Ocean is likely to be strongly affected by changes in currently poorly observed arctic coastal dynamics. We present a geomorphological classification scheme for the arctic coast, with 101,447?km of coastline in 1,315 segments. The average rate of erosion for the arctic coast is 0.5?m? year?1 with high local and regional variability. Highest rates are observed in the Laptev, East Siberian, and Beaufort Seas. Strong spatial variability in associated database bluff height, ground carbon and ice content, and coastline movement highlights the need to estimate the relative importance of shifting coastal fluxes to the Arctic Ocean at multiple spatial scales.  相似文献

The extra-tropical response to El Niño in configurations of a coupled model with increased horizontal resolution in the oceanic component is shown to be more realistic than in configurations with a low resolution oceanic component. This general conclusion is independent of the atmospheric resolution. Resolving small-scale processes in the ocean produces a more realistic oceanic mean state, with a reduced cold tongue bias, which in turn allows the atmospheric model component to be forced more realistically. A realistic atmospheric basic state is critical in order to represent Rossby wave propagation in response to El Niño, and hence the extra-tropical response to El Niño. Through the use of high and low resolution configurations of the forced atmospheric-only model component we show that, in isolation, atmospheric resolution does not significantly affect the simulation of the extra-tropical response to El Niño. It is demonstrated, through perturbations to the SST forcing of the atmospheric model component, that biases in the climatological SST field typical of coupled model configurations with low oceanic resolution can account for the erroneous atmospheric basic state seen in these coupled model configurations. These results highlight the importance of resolving small-scale oceanic processes in producing a realistic large-scale mean climate in coupled models, and suggest that it might may be possible to “squeeze out” valuable extra performance from coupled models through increases to oceanic resolution alone.  相似文献

The La Breña — El Jagüey Maar Complex, of probable Holocene age, is one of the youngest eruptive centers in the Durango Volcanic Field (DVF), a Quaternary lava plain that covers 2100 km2 and includes about 100 cinder and lava cones. The volcanic complex consists of two intersecting maars — La Breña and El Jagüey — at least two pre-maar scoria cones and associated lavas, and a series of nested post-maar lava and scoria cones that erupted within La Breña Maar and flooded its floor with lava to form one or more lava lakes. We believe that El Jagüey Maar formed first, but pyroclastic deposits associated with its formation are exposed at only a few places in the lower maar walls. A perennial lake in the bottom of El Jagüey marks the top of an aquifer about 60 m below the lava plain. Interaction of the rising basanitic magmas with this aquifer was probably responsible for the hydromagmatic eruptions at the maar complex. In the southeastern quadrant of La Breña and in most parts of El Jagüey, the upper maar walls expose a thick pyroclastic sequence of tuffs, tuff breccias, and breccias that is dominated by thinly layered sandwave and plane-parallel surge beds and contains minor interlayered scoria-fall horizons. We conclude that these deposits in the upper walls of both maars erupted during the formation of La Breña, based on: (1) thickness variations in a prominent scoria-fall marker bed interlayered with the surge deposits; (2) inferred transport directions for ballistic clasts, channels, and dune-like bedforms; and (3) lateral facies changes in the surge deposits. Some of the surge clouds from La Breña apparently travelled down the inner southwestern wall of El Jagüey, fanned out across its floor, and climbed up the opposite walls before emerging onto the surrounding lava plain. These clouds deposited steep, inward-dipping surge deposits along the lower walls of El Jagüey. Following this hydromagmatic phase, which was responsible for the formation of the maars, a series of strombolian eruptions took place from vents within La Breña. At many places along the maar rims these eruptions completely buried the surge beds under a thick sequence of post-maar scoriae and ashes. The outer flanks of the maar complex and the surrounding lava plain are also blanketed by post-maar ashes. The final phase of activity involved effusive eruptions of post-maar lavas from vents on the floor of La Breña. The evolutionary sequence from hydromagmatic eruptions during formation of the maars, through strombolian eruptions of the post-maar scoriae and ashes, and finally to the post-maar lavas appears to reflect the declining influence of magma-groundwater interactions with time. Basanitic magmas from all eruptive stages carried spinel-lherzolite and feldspathic-granulite xenoliths to the surface. The La Breña — El Jagüey Maar Complex contains the only known hydromagmatic vents in the DVF and the largest spinel-lherzolite xenoliths, which range up to 30 cm diameter. These two observations indicate an unusually rapid ascent rate for these basanitic magmas compared to those from other DVF vents.  相似文献

The three-dimensional mesoscale circulation in the vicinity of the city of São Paulo is examined through model simulations validated by observational data obtained during a field experiment. The complex terrain surrounding the plateau where the city is located, plus proximity to the sea, represent the local controls on the wind field with implications for boundary-layer transport of atmospheric constitutents. The coupling of a regional-scale circulation with slope and sea-breeze circulations is an important feature which determines the wind regime in São Paulo in a summer situation not influenced by frontal systems.  相似文献
