We present here a numerical modelling study of dislocations in perovskite CaTiO3. The dislocation core structures and properties are calculated through the Peierls–Nabarro model using the generalized stacking
fault (GSF) results as a starting model. The GSF are determined from first-principles calculations using the VASP code. The
dislocation properties such as collinear, planar core spreading and Peierls stresses are determined for the following slip
systems: [100](010), [100](001), [010](100), [010](001), [001](100), [001](010),
and All dislocations exhibit lattice friction, but glide appears to be easier for [100](010) and [010](100).
[001](010) and [001](100) exhibit collinear dissociation. Comparing Peierls stresses among tausonite (SrTiO3), perovskite (CaTiO3) and MgSiO3 perovskite demonstrates the strong influence of orthorhombic distortions on lattice friction. However, and despite some quantitative
differences, CaTiO3 appears to be a satisfactory analogue material for MgSiO3 perovskite as far as dislocation glide is concerned. 相似文献

The observed fraction of pulsars with interpulses, their period distribution and the observed pulse width versus pulse period correlation are shown to be inconsistent with a model in which the angle α between the magnetic axis and the rotation axis is random. This conclusion appears to be unavoidable, even when non-circular beams are considered. Allowing the magnetic axis to align from a random distribution at birth with a time-scale of ∼7 × 107 yr can, however, explain those observations well. The time-scale derived is consistent with that obtained via independent methods. The probability that a pulsar beam intersects the line of sight is a function of the angle α and therefore beam evolution has important consequences for evolutionary models and for estimations of the total number of neutron stars. The validity of the standard formula for the spin-down rate, which is independent of α, appears to be questionable. 相似文献

The WGS84 (World Geodetic System 1984) reference system is, originally, mathematically defined from the NSWC-9Z2 (Naval Surface Weapons Center — 9Z2) reference system. The WGS84 associated realization, called in this paper WGS84-D, is a 1 meter consistency NNSS (US Navy Navigation Satellite System) Doppler realized reference frame. In contrast, the ITRF (IERS Terrestrial Reference Frame) is a 1 centimeter consistency reference frame realized through the most accurate techniques of Space Geodesy. This work intends to improve the transformation parameters between the WGS84-D and the ITRF through the use of both a NSWC-9Z2/Doppler realization and an extension of the ITRF network. A strong linear correlation was also modeled between the Doppler determined scale factor and the mean smoothed sunspot number, due to uncompensated ionospheric effects. This correction improved NSWC-9Z2 (i.e. WGS84) Doppler realization consistency. The uncertainty of adjusted transformation parameters between the ITRF and the WGS84-D is improved by a factor 2 over previous determinations. 相似文献

Dissolved Ba, Cd, Co, Mn, Mo, Ni, Rb, Sb, Sr, U and V were measured in the Oubangui river (Central African Republic) during a complete flood period. The dissolved concentrations vary by factors ranging from 1.4 to 8.2 as a function of river discharge: Sr, Ba, Rb and Mo concentrations decrease with rising stage; Ni, U, Sb, Cd, V and Mn concentrations increase with rising stage. These distributions are explained by a mixing of quick flow, mostly surface runoff with delayed flow, mostly groundwater. The dual origin of stream waters is demonstrated by the major element ratios, which are close to a silicate end-member during the high-flow period and trend towards a carbonate end-member during the low-flow period. Moreover, geological heterogeneities in the Oubangui basin may play a role in the variation of concentrations observed at the basin outlet. The previously indicated presence of a subsurface carbonate sequence in the lower part of the basin is confirmed. Cd, V, Mn and Co show peak concentrations during decreasing stage. We suggest that biological processes such as release from phytoplanktonic material and dissolution of oxides or carbonate phases may explain this maximum. 相似文献

Stable sulfur isotope analyses show that rooted estuarine plants growing in anoxic sediments incorporate substantial amounts of 34S-depleted sulfides, or oxidation products thereof. In roots, this incorporation predominates over sulfate uptake from interstitial porewater. Either the plants incorporate normally toxic sulfides, or they are creating and using a specialized nutrient pool of oxidized sulfides at the root-sediment interface. 相似文献

Summary. The 300 km ECORS - Bay of Biscay profile was carried out along the Aquitaine shelf and comprised a complete set of experiments including zero-offset and 7.5 km constant offset vertical seismic reflection and six expanding spread profiles. Large offset recordings were fundamental for the definition of the layered lower crust and the Moho, while ESPs provided decisive complementary information for the geological interpretation. These data show a strong variation in crustal thickness from about 20 km beneath the rifted Parentis basin, a failed arm of the oceanic Bay of Biscay, up to 35 km to the north below the Armorican shelf, in the Hercynian domain, and to the south below the Cantabria shelf, in the vicinity of the Pyrenean deformation front. The results have important implications for the behaviour of the crust during the formation of rifted sedimentary basins and during continental collision. 相似文献

River discharge is currently monitored by a diminishing network of gauges, which provide a spatially incomplete picture of global discharges. This study assimilated water level information derived from a fused satellite Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) image and digital terrain model (DTM) with simulations from a coupled hydrological and hydrodynamic model to estimate discharge in an un‐gauged basin scenario. Assimilating water level measurements led to a 79% reduction in ensemble discharge uncertainty over the coupled hydrological hydrodynamic model alone. Measurement bias was evident, but the method still provided a means of improving estimates of discharge for high flows. The study demonstrates the potential of currently available synthetic aperture radar imagery to reduce discharge uncertainty in un‐gauged basins when combined with model simulations in a data assimilation framework, where sufficient topographic data are available. The work is timely because in the near future the launch of satellite radar missions will lead to a significant increase in the volume of data available for space‐borne discharge estimation. In this paper, we present our study of the orbital and thermal evolutions, due to solar radiative heating, of four near-Earth asteroids (NEAs) considered as potential target candidates for sample return space missions to primitive asteroids. We used a dynamical model of the NEA population to estimate the most likely source region and orbital history of these objects. Then, for each asteroid, we integrated numerically over their entire lifetime a set of 14 initially indistinguishable orbit (clones), obtained by small variations of the nominal initial conditions. Using a thermal model, we then computed surface and sub-surface temperatures of these bodies during their dynamical history. Our aim is to determine whether these bodies are likely to have experienced high temperature level, and whether great temperature changes can be expected due to the orbital changes as well as their maximum and minimum values. Such information is important in the framework of sample return space missions whose goal is to bring back pristine materials. The knowledge of the temperature range of materials at different depth over the orbital evolution of potential targets can help defining sampling strategies that ensure the likelihood that unaltered material will be brought back. Our results suggest that for all the considered potential targets, the surface has experienced for some time temperatures greater than 400 K and at most 500 K with 50% probability. This probability drops rapidly with increasing temperature. Sub-surface materials at a depth of only 3 cm are much more protected from high temperature and generally do not reach temperatures exceeding 450 K (with 50% probability). They should thus be unaltered at this depth at least from a Sun-driven heating point of view. On the other hand, surface material for some of the considered objects can have a range of temperature which can make them less reliable as pristine materials. However, it is assumed here that the same material is constantly exposed to solar heat, while regolith turnover may occur. The latter can be caused by different processes such as seismic shaking and/or impact cratering. This would reduce the total time that materials are exposed to a certain temperature. Thus, it is very likely that a sample collected from any of the four considered targets, or any primitive NEA with similar dynamical properties, will have components that will be thermally unaltered as long as some of it comes from only 3 to 5 cm depth. Groundwater movement and availability in crystalline and metamorphosed rocks is dominated by the secondary porosity generated through fracturing. The distributions of fractures and fracture zones determine permeable pathways and the productivity of these rocks. Controls on how these distributions vary with depth in the shallow subsurface (<300 m) and their resulting influence on groundwater flow is not well understood. The results of a subsurface study in the Nashoba and Avalon terranes of eastern Massachusetts (USA), which is a region experiencing expanded use of the fractured bedrock as a potable-supply aquifer, are presented. The study logged the distribution of fractures in 17 boreholes, identified flowing fractures, and hydraulically characterized the rock mass intersecting the boreholes. Of all fractures encountered, 2.5% are hydraulically active. Boreholes show decreasing fracture frequency up to 300 m depth, with hydraulically active fractures showing a similar trend; this restricts topographically driven flow. Borehole temperature profiles corroborate this, with minimal hydrologically altered flow observed in the profiles below 100 m. Results from this study suggest that active flow systems in these geologic settings are shallow and that fracture permeability outside of the influence of large-scale structures will follow a decreasing trend with depth. 相似文献
