Fission‐track (FT) analysis of detrital zircon from synorogenic sediment is a well‐established tool to examine the cooling and exhumation history of convergent mountain belts, but has so far not been used to determine the long‐term evolution of the central Himalaya. This study presents FT analysis of detrital zircon from 22 sandstone and modern sediment samples that were collected along three stratigraphic sections within the Miocene to Pliocene Siwalik Group, and from modern rivers, in western and central Nepal. The results provide evidence for widespread cooling in the Nepalese Himalaya at about 16.0±1.4 Ma, and continuous exhumation at a rate of about 1.4±0.2 km Myr?1 thereafter. The ~16 Ma cooling is likely related to a combination of tectonic and erosional activity, including movement on the Main Central thrust and Southern Tibetan Detachment system, as well as emplacement of the Ramgarh thrust on Lesser Himalayan sedimentary and meta‐sedimentary units. The continuous exhumation signal following the ~16 Ma cooling event is seen in connection with ongoing tectonic uplift, river incision and erosion of lower Lesser Himalayan rocks exposed below the MCT and Higher Himalayan rocks in the hanging wall of the MCT, controlled by orographic precipitation and crustal extrusion. Provenance analysis, to distinguish between Higher Himalayan and Lesser Himalayan zircon sources, is based on double dating of individual zircons with the FT and U/Pb methods. Zircons with pre‐Himalayan FT cooling ages may be derived from either nonmetamorphic parts of the Tethyan sedimentary succession or Higher Himalayan protolith that formerly covered the Dadeldhura and Ramgarh thrust sheets, but that have been removed by erosion. Both the Higher and Lesser Himalaya appear to be sources for the zircons that record either ~16 Ma cooling or the continuous exhumation afterwards.  相似文献

Despite widespread media coverage of livestock-related issues and growing scientific evidence linking meat production and climate change, systematic content analysis of this relationship in media coverage has been surprisingly minimal. In this article, we combine actor-network theory with framing theory to develop the basis for “story-networks”—networks of actants and artifacts that shape how a media report or “story” is framed. We coded livestock-related articles from a major U.S. newspaper, the Los Angeles Times, over the 1999–2010 period to understand how various actants and artifacts shaped different story-networks. Just 5% of all livestock articles addressed connections with climate change; these articles focused on technology, lifestyle, or policy. Distinctive story-networks characterized each category, framing the livestock–climate change linkage as an issue to be addressed through either technological innovation, individual lifestyle choices, or policy action. In each story-network type, varying configurations of actants and artifacts were involved, including the cattle themselves.  相似文献

Hydro‐geomorphological assessments are an essential component for riverine management plans. They usually require costly and time‐consuming field surveys to characterize the spatial variability of key variables such as flow depth, width, discharge, water surface slope, grain size and unit stream power throughout the river corridor. The objective of this research is to develop automated tools for hydro‐geomorphological assessments using high‐resolution LiDAR digital elevation models (DEMs). More specifically, this paper aims at developing geographic information system (GIS) tools to extract channel slope, width and discharge from 1 m‐resolution LiDAR DEMs to estimate the spatial distribution of unit stream power in two contrasted watersheds in Quebec: a small agricultural stream (Des Fèves River) and a large gravel‐bed river (Matane River). For slope, the centreline extracted from the raw LiDAR DEM was resampled at a coarser resolution using the minimum elevation value. The channel width extraction algorithm progressively increased the centerline from the raw DEM until thresholds of elevation differences and slopes were reached. Based on the comparison with over 4000 differential global positioning system (GPS) measurements of the water surface collected in a 50 km reach of the Matane River, the longitudinal profile and slope estimates extracted from the raw and resampled LiDAR DEMs were in very good agreement with the field measurements (correlation coefficients ranging from 0 · 83 to 0 · 87) and can thus be used to compute stream power. The extracted width also corresponded very well to the channel as seen from ortho‐photos, although the presence of bars in the Matane River increased the level of error in width estimates. The estimated maximum unit stream power spatial patterns corresponded well with field evidence of bank erosion, indicating that LiDAR DEMs can be used with confidence for initial hydro‐geomorphological assessments. Regolith and dust cover the surfaces of the Solar Systems solid bodies, and thus constitute the visible surface of these objects. The topmost layers also interact with space or the atmosphere in the case of Mars, Venus and Titan. Surface probes have been proposed, studied and flown to some of these worlds. Landers and some of the mechanisms they carry, e.g. sampling devices, drills and subsurface probes (“moles”) will interact with the porous surface layer. The absence of true extraterrestrial test materials in ample quantities restricts experiments to the use of soil or regolith analogue materials. Several standardized soil simulants have been developed and produced and are commonly used for a variety of laboratory experiments. In this paper we intend to give an overview of some of the most important soil simulants, and describe experiments (penetrometry, thermal conductivity, aeolian transport, goniometry, spectroscopy and exobiology) made in various European laboratory facilities.  相似文献

Abstract— –We have analyzed ice samples and meteorites from the LaPaz region of Antarctica to investigate the composition of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and amino acids with the goal to understand whether or not there is a compositional relationship between the two reservoirs. Four LL5 ordinary chondrites (OCs) and one CK carbonaceous chondrite were collected as part of the 2003/2004 ANSMET season. Ice samples collected from directly underneath the meteorites were extracted. In addition, exhaust particles from the snowmobiles used during the expedition were collected to investigate possible contributions from this source. The meteorite samples, the particulate matter and solid‐state extracts of the ice samples and the exhaust filters were subjected to two‐step laser mass spectrometry (L2MS) to investigate the PAH composition. For amino acids analysis, the meteorites were extracted with water and acid hydrolyzed, and the extracts were analyzed with offline OPA/NAC derivatization combined with liquid chromatography with UV fluorescence detection and time of flight mass spectrometry (LC‐FD/ToF‐MS). PAHs in the particulate matter of the ice were found to be qualitatively similar to the meteorite samples, indicating that micron‐sized grains of the meteorite may be embedded in the ice samples. The concentration levels of dissolved PAHs in all the ice samples were found to be below the detection limit of the L2MS. The PAH composition of the snowmobile exhaust is significantly different to the one in particulate matter, making it an unlikely source of contamination for Antarctic meteorites. The amino acids glycine, β‐alanine and γ‐amino‐n‐butyric acid that were detected at concentrations of 3 to 19 parts per billion (ppb) are probably indigenous to the Antarctic meteorites. Some of the LaPaz ice samples were also found to contain amino acids at concentration levels of 1 to 33 parts per trillion (ppt), in particular α‐aminoisobutyric acid (AIB), an abundant non‐protein amino acid of extraterrestrial origin found in some carbonaceous chondrites. We hypothesize that this amino acid could have been extracted from Antarctic micrometeorites and the particulate matter of the meteorites during the concentration procedure of the ice samples.  相似文献

Although the protective role of leaf litter cover against soil erosion is known for a long time, little research has been conducted on the processes involved. Moreover, the impact of soil meso‐ and macrofauna within the litter layer on erosion control is not clear. To investigate how leaf litter cover and diversity as well as meso‐ and macrofauna influence sediment discharge in subtropical forest ecosystems, a field experiment has been carried out in Southeast China. A full‐factorial random design with 96 micro‐scale runoff plots and 7 domestic leaf species was established and erosion was triggered by a rainfall simulator. Our results demonstrate that leaf litter cover protects soil from erosion (?82 % sediment discharge on leaf covered plots) by rainfall and this protection is removed as litter decomposes. The protective effect is influenced by the presence or absence of soil meso‐ and macrofauna. Fauna presence increases soil erosion rates significantly by 58 %, while leaf species diversity shows a non‐significant negative trend. We assume that the faunal effect arises from arthropods slackening and processing the soil surface as well as fragmenting and decomposing the protecting leaf litter covers. Even though the diversity level did not show a significant influence, single leaf species in monocultures show rather different impacts on sediment discharge and thus, erosion control. In our experiment, runoff plots with leaf litter from Machilus thunbergii showed the highest sediment discharge (68.0 g m?2) whereas plots with Cyclobalanopsis glauca showed the smallest rates (7.9 g m?2). We have used GLONASS P-code measurements from different geodetic GPS/GLONASS receivers involved in the IGEX campaign to perform frequency/time transfer between remote clocks. GLONASS time transfer is commonly based on the clock differences between GLONASS system time and the local clock computed by a time transfer receiver. We choose to analyze the raw P-code data available in the RINEX files. This also allows working with the data from geodetic receivers involved in the IGEX campaign. As a first point, we show that the handling of the external frequency in some of the IGEX receivers is not suited for time transfer applications. We also point out that the GLONASS broadcast ephemerides give rise to a considerable number of outliers in the time transfer, compared to the precise IGEX ephemerides. Due to receiver clock resets at day boundaries, which is a characteristic of the R100 receivers from 3S-Navigation, continuous data sets exceeding one day are not available. Invthis context, it is therefore impossible to perform RINEX-based precise frequency transfer with GLONASS P-codes on a time scale longer than one day. Because the frequencies used by GLONASS satellites are different, the time transfer results must be corrected for the different receiver hardware delays. After this correction, the final precision of our time transfer results corresponds to a root-mean-square (rms) of 1.8 nanoseconds (ns) (maximum difference of 11.8 ns) compared to a rms of about 4.4 ns (maximum difference of 31.9 ns) for time transfer based on GPS C/A code observations. ? 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

Fragments of unaltered andesite found at all levels in the deposits of the catastrophic flank-failure, directed-blast eruption of the Soufrière of Guadeloupe in 3100 bp are thought to be remnants of the cryptodome. They were observed in analytical transmission electron microscopy for clues to the evolution of the intrusion prior to the eruption. Several features that could potentially be used as temperature markers were identified, among which the angle between microexsolutions of magnetite in augite phenocrysts was used to find an upper boundary of the temperature of the intrusion before the eruption: 600–700°C. Calculation of the time a dyke or sphere-shaped intrusion may have taken to cool from the emplacement temperature down to the temperature of exsolution of the magnetite leads to an estimate of the time between emplacement of the intrusion and the eruption, which could not have been less than a few tens of years. It therefore seems probable that the emplacement of the magmatic intrusion was not the immediate cause of the flank destabilization and catastrophic eruption of the Soufrière in 3100 bp.  相似文献
