Abstract. This paper briefly summarises research carried out in 1982–1990 in the coastal area off Monte Conero, SW northern Adriatic Sea. Oceanographic data on temperature, salinity, oxygen saturation, nutrients (nitrates, silicates and orthophosphates), and chlorophylls were collected to characterise this coastal ecosystem in view of the setting up of the "Costa del Monte Conero" protected marine area.
Towards the coast the physical and chemical parameters exhibited a seasonal periodicity.
Temperature showed a clear annual periodicity with a certain interannual variability; this also holds true for oxygen saturation, with peaks in March and minima in September, though without hypoxic events.
Nutrient concentrations peaked at the surface layer at the coastal station from December to March (nitrates: 35–50 μmol 1−1; silicates: 22–70 μmol 1−1; orthophosphates: 0.37–0.54 μmol 1−1) and minima in summer (Jul-Aug) on surface and bottom (0–12μmol 1−1, 0–18.5 μmol 1−1, and 0–0.15 μmol 1−1, respectively). From 1988 to 1990 nutrient peaks were lower and coastal salinity exceed 33, with nitrates below 16 μmol 1−1, silicates below 8 μmol 1−1, and orthophosphates less than 0.2 μmol 1−1.
In the coastal area of Senigallia, 40 km to the north, where the influence of the coastal current that carries the river inflows to the south is stronger, the seasonal cycle was similar, albeit with higher values for nutrients and chlorophylls.  相似文献

Participation of local people is often neglected in natural resource management, which leads to failure to understand the social aspects and historical construction of environmental problems. Participatory mapping can enhance the communication of local spatial knowledge for management processes and challenge the official maps and other spatial representations produced by state authorities and scientists. In this study, we analyze what kind of social meanings can be revealed through a multimethod participatory mapping process focusing on water resources in Taita Hills, Kenya. The participatory mapping clearly complicates the simplified image of the physical science mappings, typically depicting natural water supply, by addressing the impacts of contamination, inadequate infrastructure, poverty, distance to the sources, and restrictions in their uses on people's access to water. Moreover, this shared exercise is able to trigger discussion on issues that cannot always be localized but still contribute to place making. Local historical accounts reveal the social and political drivers of the current water-related problems, making explicit the political ecology dynamics in the area.  相似文献

We study, by numerical simulations, the propagation of an axisymmetric supersonic jet in an isothermal King atmosphere and we analyse the evolution of the resulting X-ray properties and their dependence on the jet physical parameters. We show the existence of two distinct regimes of interaction, with strong and weak shocks. In the first case shells of enhanced X-ray emission are to be expected, whereas in the second case we expect deficit of X-ray emission coincident with the cocoon. Analysing the results of our simulations we find that the jet kinetic power is the main parameter controlling the transition between the two regimes. We also discuss, in the same scheme, the ICM heating induced by the jet propagation, considering its effects on the observed relations between the cluster X-ray luminosity and temperature and between cluster entropy and temperature.  相似文献

A micro‐pulse lidar system (MPL) was used to measure the vertical and horizontal distribution of aerosols during the Aerosol Characterization Experiment 2 (ACE‐2) in June and July of 1997. The MPL measurements were made at the Izaña observatory (IZO), a weather station located on a mountain ridge (28°18' N, 16°30' W, 2367 m asl) near the center of the island of Tenerife, Canary Islands. The MPL was used to acquire aerosol backscatter, extinction, and optical depth profiles for normal background periods and periods influenced by Saharan dust from North Africa. System tests and calibration procedures are discussed, and an analysis of aerosol optical profiles acquired during ACE‐2 is presented. MPL data taken during normal IZO conditions (no dust) showed that upslope aerosols appeared during the day and dissipated at night and that the layers were mostly confined to altitudes a few hundred meters above IZO. MPL data taken during a Saharan dust episode on 17 July showed that peak aerosol extinction values were an order of magnitude greater than molecular scattering over IZO, and that the dust layers extended to 5 km asl. The value of the dust backscatter–extinction ratio was determined to be 0.027±0.007 sr−1. Comparisons of the MPL data with data from other co‐located instruments showed good agreement during the dust episode.  相似文献

We present the first C-shock and radiative transfer model that calculates the evolution of the line profiles of neutral and ion species like SiO, H13CO+ and HN13C for different flow times along the propagation of the shock through the unperturbed gas. We find that the line profiles of SiO characteristic of the magnetic precursor stage have very narrow linewidths and are centered at velocities close to the ambient cloud velocity, as observed toward the young shocks in the L1448-mm outflow. Consistently with previous works, our model also reproduces the broad SiO emission detected in the high velocity gas in this outflow, for the downstream postshock gas in the shock. This implies that the different velocity components observed in L1448-mm are due to the coexistence of different shocks at different evolutionary stages.  相似文献

We present new near-infrared (IR) spectra (0.80–1.35 μm) of the pre-Main Sequence source PV Cep taken during a monitoring program of eruptive variables we are conducting since some years. Simultaneous photometric and spectroscopic observations are systematically carried out during outburst and quiescence periods. By correlating extinction-free parameters, such as HI recombination lines and underlying continuum, it is possible to infer on the mechanism(s) responsible for their origin. Accretion and mass loss processes have a dominant role in determining the PV Cep irregular variability of both continuum and line emission. The potentialities of the observational modality are also discussed.  相似文献

Benthic mucilaginous aggregates are frequently formed in various parts of the Mediterranean basin, as in the Tyrrhenian and Adriatic Seas. Notwithstanding their wide spatial distribution, the role played by these aggregates in the biogeochemical cycling of organic matter is still largely unknown.The characteristics of the benthic aggregates examined in the present study showed that they are different from other mucilaginous aggregates, such as the “pelagic” ones that can form in the same areas in the water column and subsequently sediment to the seafloor. The aggregates are usually formed of structures of the filamentous macroalgae Acinetospora crinita, Chrysonephos lewisii and Nematochrysopsis marina. The elemental composition of the aggregates showed a marine macrophyte origin on the basis of the bulk organic matter content of the aggregates. Carbohydrates and proteins account for 26.6 to 55.9% of the organic carbon in the mucilage, respectively. Monosaccharide composition of exopolysaccharides in the mucilage aggregates revealed a characteristic pattern, with galactose, xylose or mannose and fucose as the major components. The relatively high content of deoxysugars is another distinctive feature. The abundant sulphate and uronic groups present in the polysaccharides in addition to their macromolecular dimensions and elongation contribute to inter-chain aggregation. Electron microscopic observations suggest that the polysaccharide fraction is the main macromolecular component in the formation of the persistent gel network in the aggregates.  相似文献

High frequency quasi-periodic oscillations (HFQPOs) have been detected in microquasars and neutron star systems. The resonance model suggested by Kluźniak and Abramowicz (2000, 2001) explains twin QPOs as two weakly coupled nonlinear resonant epicyclic modes in the accretion disk. Although this model successfully explains many features of the observed QPOs, it still faces difficulties and shortcomings. Here we summarize the aspects of the theory that remain a puzzle and we briefly discuss likely developments.  相似文献
