Glacier hydrochemistry, solute provenance, and chemical denudation at a surge-type glacier in Kuannersuit Kuussuat, Disko Island, West Greenland 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
In 1995–1998, Han 11 km terrestrial surge of Kuannersuit Glacier, an outlet glacier of the largest ice cap on Disko Island, West Greenland, affected the catchment dramatically. In order to estimate solute fluxes and provenances, bulk meltwaters were sampled at the main subglacial outlet during the initial part of the quiescent phase. The hydrochemistry is significantly influenced by a subglacial basaltic weathering regime with absence of carbonate minerals. The results show that marine and aerosol derived solutes have minimal contribution to the total ion content, whereas sequestration of atmospheric CO2 associated with carbonation of Ca-rich feldspar and reactive volcanic glass is more dominant than previously reported from glacierized catchments. Application of a sampling strategy dividing water samples into four groups to determine the content of dissolved HCO3− and CO32− shows that the cationic equivalent weathering rate range is 683–860 Σmeq+ m−2 a−1 and solute flux ranges between 76 and 98 t km−2 a−1. The crustal denudation rate is estimated to 26 t km−2 a−1, and the transient CO2 drawdown amounts to 8500–13700 kg C km−2 a−1. 相似文献

The common observation of sedimentary basin inversion in orogenic forelands implies that rifts constitute weak areas of the continental lithosphere. When compressed, the rifts respond with uplift of the deepest parts and erosion of sediments therein. Simultaneously, syn-compressional marginal troughs are formed flanking the inversion zone.Since rifting and subsequent post-rift thermal re-equilibration are processes expected to alter the long-term mechanical state of the lithosphere, the phenomenon of basin inversion is non-trivial from a rheological point of view. Stochastic modelling of the long-term thermal structure beneath sedimentary basins indicates that the crustal part of a rift is warmer, and hence weaker, than the surrounding crustal blocks. In contrast, the mantle part is cold and strong beneath the basin centre.In this paper, it is investigated whether the rifting-induced strength alterations constitute a sufficient condition for a thermally equilibrated rift to invert by compression. Numerical experiments with two-dimensional dynamic thermo-mechanical models are performed. In particular, the focus is on rifting-related mechanical instabilities that reduce the load bearing capacity of the lithosphere. In the experiments, strain-softening behaviour is introduced in the non-associated plasticity model representing brittle yielding. The result is self-consistent large-scale fault formation.The models predict that the rifting-related necking instability induces differential crustal thinning increasing the post-rift crustal weakness. Strain softening and the associated fault formation amplifies the necking instability and introduces zones of structural weakness exposed for compressional re-activation.Under these circumstances, basin inversion follows as a natural consequence of rift compression. 相似文献

The Late Cretaceous–Cenozoic evolution of the North German Basin has been investigated by 3-D thermomechanical finite element modelling. The model solves the equations of motion of an elasto-visco-plastic continuum representing the continental lithosphere. It includes the variations of stress in time and space, the thermal evolution, surface processes and variations in global sea level.The North German Basin became inverted in the Late Cretaceous–Early Cenozoic. The inversion was most intense in the southern part of the basin, i.e. in the Lower Saxony Basin, the Flechtingen High and the Harz. The lower crustal properties vary across the North German Basin. North of the Elbe Line, the lower crust is dense and has high seismic velocity compared to the lower crust south of the Elbe Line. The lower crust with high density and high velocity is assumed to be strong. Lateral variations in lithospheric strength also arise from lateral variations in Moho depth. In areas where the Moho is deep, the upper mantle is warm and the lithosphere is thereby relatively weak.Compression of the lithosphere causes shortening, thickening and surface uplift of relatively weak areas. Tectonic inversion occurs as zones of preexisting weakness are shortened and thickened in compression. Contemporaneously, the margins of the weak zone subside. Cenozoic subsidence of the northern part of the North German Basin is explained as a combination of thermal subsidence and a small amount of deformation and surface uplift during compression of the stronger crust in the north.The modelled deformation patterns and resulting sediment isopachs correlate with observations from the area. A nonlinear hysteretic model for the response and local damage analyses of reinforced concrete shear frames subject to earthquake excitation is proposed, and, the model is applied to analyse midbroken reinforced concrete (RC) structures due to earthquake loads. Each storey of the shear frame is represented by a Clough and Johnston hysteretic oscillator with degrading elastic fraction of the restoring force. The local damage is numerically quantified in the domain [0,1] using the maximum softening damage indicators which are defined in closed form based on the variation of the eigenfrequency of the local oscillators due to the local stiffness and strength deterioration. The proposed method of response and damage analyses is illustrated using a sample 5 storey shear frame with a weak third storey in stiffness and/or strength subject to sinusoidal and simulated earthquake excitations for which the horizontal component of the ground motion is modeled as a stationary Gaussian stochastic process with Kanai-Tajimi spectrum, multiplied by an envelope function. 相似文献

Radiocarbon dating of marsh facies peat and drowned trees along the barrier beaches at the south end of Lake Winnipeg, indicates water levels are presently rising. Lagoonal sediment and associated trees are being buried as the barrier islands move landward in response to rising water levels. Estimates based on radiocarbon dating suggest the water level has been rising 20 cm/century over the last three hundred years. This estimate is consistent with lake level records and models of isostatic uplift which suggest the level of the lake should be rising between 6.7 and 12 cm/century along the south shore. However, additional radiocarbon dates on submerged trees from Observation Point, at the north end of South Basin, and the Spider Islands, near the northern outlet, indicate that at least part of the water-level rise is basin wide. Southward transgression of Lake Winnipeg, throughout the Holocene, is believed to be the result of isostatic tilting of the basin, whereas the recent basin-wide water-level rise is more likely the result of a combination of isostatic tilting and increased precipitation associated with climate change. 相似文献
