This paper presents a simulation of three components of near-field ground shaking recorded during the main shock at three stations of the September 16, 1978, Tabas (Mw = 7.4), Iran, earthquake, close to the causative fault. A hybrid method composed of a discrete wavenumber method developed by Bouchon (Bouchon in Bull Seismol Soc Am 71:959–971, 1981; Cotton and Coutant in Geophys J Int 128:676–688, 1997) and a stochastic finite-fault modeling based on a dynamic corner frequency proposed by Motazedian and Atkinson (Bull Seismol Soc Am 95:995–1010, 2005), modified by Assatourians and Atkinson (Bull Seismol Soc Am 97:935–1949, 2007), is used for generating the seismograms at low (0.1–1.0 Hz) and high frequencies (1.0–20.0 Hz), respectively. The results are validated by comparing the simulated peak acceleration, peak velocity, peak displacement, Arias intensity, the integral of velocity squared, Fourier spectrum and acceleration response spectrum on a frequency-by-frequency basis, the shape of the normalized integrals of acceleration and velocity squared, and the cross-correlation with the observed time-series data. Each characteristic is compared on a scale from 0 to 10, with 10 being perfect agreement. Also, the results are validated by comparing the simulated ground motions with the modified Mercalli intensity observations reported by reconnaissance teams and showed reasonable agreement. The results of the present study imply that the damage distribution pattern of the 1978 Tabas earthquake can be explained by the source directivity effect. 相似文献
Precise triple oxygen isotope compositions of 32 Allende bulk chondrules (ABCs) are determined using laser‐assisted fluorination mass spectrometry. Various chemically characterized chondrule types show ranges in δ18O that vary from ?4.80‰ to +1.10‰ (porphyritic olivine; PO, N = 15), ?3.10‰ to +1.50‰ (porphyritic olivine pyroxene; POP, N = 9), ?3.40‰ to +2.60‰ (barred olivine; BO, N = 4), and ?3.60‰ to +1.30‰ (porphyritic pyroxene; PP, N = 3). Oxygen isotope data of these chondrules yield a regression line referred to as the Allende bulk chondrule line (ABC line, slope = 0.86 ± 0.02). Most of our data fall closer to the primitive chondrule minerals line (PCM line, slope = 0.987 ± 0.013) and the carbonaceous chondrite anhydrous mineral line (CCAM line, slope = 0.94 ± 0.02) than the Allende anhydrous mineral line (AAML, slope = 1.00 ± 0.01) with a maximum δ18O value (+2.60‰) observed in a BO chondrule and a minimum δ18O value (?4.80‰) shown by a PO chondrule. Similarly, these chondrules depict variable ?17O values that range from ?5.65‰ to ?3.25‰ (PO), ?4.60‰ to ?2.80‰ (POP), ?4.95‰ to ?3.00‰ (BO), ?5.30‰ to ?3.20‰ (PP), and ?4.90‰ (CC). A simple model is proposed for the Allende CV3 chondrite with reference to the AAML and PCM line to illustrate the isotopic variations occurred due to the aqueous alteration processes. The estimated temperature ranging from 10 to 130 °C (mean ~60 °C) implies that the secondary mineralization in Allende happened in a warmer and relatively dry environment compared to Murchison. We further propose that thermal metamorphism could have dehydrated the Allende matrix at temperatures between >150 °C and <600 °C. 相似文献
The hydrologic structure of Taal Volcano has favored development of an extensive hydrothermal system whose prominent feature
is the acidic Main Crater Lake (pH<3) lying in the center of an active vent complex, which is surrounded by a slightly alkaline
caldera lake (Lake Taal). This peculiar situation makes Taal prone to frequent, and sometimes catastrophic, hydrovolcanic
eruptions. Fumaroles, hot springs, and lake waters were sampled in 1991, 1992, and 1995 in order to develop a geochemical
model for the hydrothermal system. The low-temperature fumarole compositions indicate strong interaction of magmatic vapors
with the hydrothermal system under relatively oxidizing conditions. The thermal waters consist of highly, moderately, and
weakly mineralized solutions, but none of them corresponds to either water–rock equilibrium or rock dissolution. The concentrated
discharges have high Na contents (>3500 mg/kg) and low SO4/Cl ratios (<0.3). The Br/Cl ratio of most samples suggests incorporation of seawater into the hydrothermal system. Water
and dissolved sulfate isotopic compositions reveal that the Main Crater Lake and spring discharges are derived from a deep
parent fluid (T≈300 °C), which is a mixture of seawater, volcanic water, and Lake Taal water. The volcanic end member is
probably produced in the magmatic-hydrothermal environment during absorption of high-temperature gases into groundwater. Boiling
and mixing of the parent water give rise to the range of chemical and isotopic characteristics observed in the thermal discharges.
Incursion of seawater from the coastal region to the central part of the volcano is supported by the low water levels of the
lakes and by the fact that Lake Taal was directly connected to the China sea until the sixteenth century. The depth to the
seawater-meteoric water interface is calculated to be 80 and 160 m for the Main Crater Lake and Lake Taal, respectively. Additional
data are required to infer the hydrologic structure of Taal. Geochemical surveillance of the Main Crater Lake using the SO4/Cl, Na/K, or Mg/Cl ratio cannot be applied straightforwardly due to the presence of seawater in the hydrothermal system.

If the Earth was formed by accumulation of rocky bodies in the presence of the gases of the primordial solar nebula, the Earth at this formation stage was surrounded by a massive primordial atmosphere (of about 1 × 1026 g) composed mainly of H2 and He. We suppose that the H2 and He escaped from the Earth, owing to the effects of strong solar wind and EUV radiation, in stages after the solar nebula itself dissipated into the outer space. The primordial atmosphere also contained the rare gases Ne, Ar, Kr and Xe whose amounts were much greater than those contained in the present Earth's atmosphere. Thus, we have studied in this paper the dissipation of these rare gases due to the drag effect of outflowing hydrogen molecules. By means of the two-component gas kinetic theory and under the assumption of spherically symmetric flow, we have found that the outflow velocity of each rare gas relative to that of hydrogen is expressed in terms of only two parameters — the rate of hydrogen mass flow across the spherical surface under consideration and the temperature at this surface. According to this result, the rare gases were dissipated below the levels of their contents in the present atmosphere, when the mass loss rate of hydrogen was much greater than 1 × 1017 g/yr throughout the stages where the atmospheric mass decreased from 1 × 1026 g to 4 × 1019 g. 相似文献
Noble gas measurements were performed for nine aubrites: Bishopville, Cumberland Falls, Mayo Belwa, Mount Egerton, Norton County, Peña Blanca Spring, Shallowater, ALHA 78113 and LAP 02233. These data clarify the origins and histories, particularly cosmic-ray exposure and regolith histories, of the aubrites and their parent body(ies). Accurate cosmic-ray exposure ages were obtained using the 81Kr-Kr method for three meteorites: 52 ± 3, 49 ± 10 and 117 ± 14 Ma for Bishopville, Cumberland Falls and Mayo Belwa, respectively. Mayo Belwa shows the longest cosmic-ray exposure age determined by the 81Kr-Kr method so far, close to the age of 121 Ma for Norton County. These are the longest ages among stony meteorites. Distribution of cosmic-ray exposure ages of aubrites implies 4-9 break-up events (except anomalous aubrites) on the parent body. Six aubrites show “exposure at the surface” on their parent body(ies): (i) neutron capture 36Ar, 80Kr, 82Kr and/or 128Xe probably produced on the respective parent body (Bishopville, Cumberland Falls, Mayo Belwa, Peña Blanca Spring, Shallowater and ALHA 78113); and/or (ii) chondritic trapped noble gases, which were likely released from chondritic inclusions preserved in the aubrite hosts (Cumberland Falls, Peña Blanca Spring and ALHA 78113). The concentrations of 128Xe from neutron capture on 127I vary among four measured specimens of Cumberland Falls (0.5-76 × 10−14 cm3STP/g), but are correlated with those of radiogenic 129Xe, implying that the concentrations of (128Xe)n and (129Xe)rad reflect variable abundances of iodine among specimens. The ratios of (128Xe)n/(129Xe)rad obtained in this work are different for Mayo Belwa (0.045), Cumberland Falls (0.015) and Shallowater (0.001), meaning that neutron fluences, radiogenic 129Xe retention ages, or both, are different among these aubrites. Shallowater contains abundant trapped Ar, Kr and Xe (2.2 × 10−7, 9.4 × 10−10 and 2.8 × 10−10 cm3STP/g, respectively) as reported previously (Busemann and Eugster, 2002). Isotopic compositions of Kr and Xe in Shallowater are consistent with those of Q (a primordial noble gas component trapped in chondrites). The Ar/Kr/Xe compositions are somewhat fractionated from Q, favoring lighter elements. Because of the unbrecciated nature of Shallowater, Q-like noble gases are considered to be primordial in origin. Fission Xe is found in Cumberland Falls, Mayo Belwa, Peña Blanca Spring, ALHA 78113 and LAP 02233. The majority of fission Xe is most likely 244Pu-derived, and about 10-20% seems to be 238U-derived at 136Xe. The observed (136Xe)Pu corresponds to 0.019-0.16 ppb of 244Pu, from which the 244Pu/U ratios are calculated as 0.002-0.009. These ratios resemble those of chondrites and other achondrites like eucrites, suggesting that no thermal resetting of the Pu-Xe system occurred after ∼4.5 Ga ago. We also determined oxygen isotopic compositions for four aubrites with chondritic noble gases and a new aubrite LAP 02233. In spite of their chondritic noble gas signatures, oxygen with chondritic isotopic compositions was found only in a specimen of Cumberland Falls (Δ17O of ∼0.3‰). The other four aubrites and the other two measured specimens of Cumberland Falls are concurrent with the typical range for aubrites. 相似文献
North-seeking bacteria (NSB) with 1 μm diameters migrate to the S pole only. They were applied to identify the S pole determination on a polished surface of magnetite-rich pyroxenite whose natural remanent magnetization (NRM) intensity was 5.64 × 10−3 Am2 kg−1. The microscopic observations were performed under dark-field illumination in a controlled magnetic field to 10 μT. The NSB formed clusters on limited areas of magnetite grains and scattered over the whole magnetite grains.
The NRM decreased to 1.02 × 10−5 Am2 kg−1 by alternating field (AF) demagnetization to 60 mT but no clusters appeared, while small populations of the NSB scattered on each grain. These scattered bacteria may gather toward the S pole resulting from magnetic domain walls.
When the sample acquired saturation isothermal remanent magnetization (SIRM) to 1 T, the NSB formed dense clusters at the opposite side to the applied field direction on the many grains as expected. This evidence indicated that the NSB can be useful micro-organisms for the determination of fine magnetic structures. Some grains also had NSB clusters at the edge of the grains toward the field direction or did not exhibit any clusters. The complicated distribution of the clusters (the S poles) may be explained by shape anisotropy of the magnetic grains. 相似文献
We present deep wide-field (16.4×16.4 arcmin2) Washington CT 1 CCD surface photometry of the giant elliptical galaxy NGC 4472, the brightest member of the Virgo cluster. Our data cover a wider and deeper field than any previous CCD photometry. A single King model does not give a good fit to the surface brightness profiles of NGC 4472, but they can be fitted approximately using two King models: with the separate models representing the inner and outer regions . Surface brightness profiles for the outer region can also be fitted approximately by a de Vaucouleurs law. There is clearly a negative colour gradient within 3 arcmin of NGC 4472, in the sense that the colour gets bluer with increasing radius. The slope of the colour gradient for this region is derived to be Δ μ ( C − T 1)=−0.08 mag arcsec−2 for Δ log r =1, which corresponds to a metallicity gradient of Δ[Fe/H]=−0.2 dex. However, the surface colour becomes gradually redder with increasing radius beyond 3 arcmin. A comparison of the structural parameters of NGC 4472 in C and T 1 images has shown that there is little difference in the shapes of ellipses observed using isochromes or isophotes. In addition, photometric and structural parameters of NGC 4472 have been determined. 相似文献
The flattened or elongated morphology often observed in contact twinned crystals has been referred to the so-called re-entrant corner effect at twin junctions. To re-investigate the validity of this mechanism, natural quartz crystals twinned after Japan Law have been subjected to re-growth in a commercial synthetic quartz autoclave, and the change in their morphology and surface microtopography by re-growth studied. It is found that although twin re-entrant corners may play a role of preferential growth sites, this role can be weakened considerably and in fact can become almost negligible when crystals grow under high supersaturation condition. Preferential growth at the re-entrant corner of a twin junction is probably due to clusters of dislocations concentrated in the composition plane, and not due to the so-called re-entrant corner effect in its original sense. 相似文献
