The variance of the friction angle or friction coefficient (tan ?) is often considered in geotechnical reliability analyses, which implies that the variance of the shear strength as defined by a Mohr-Coulomb envelope increases as the normal stress on the shearing surface increases. However, shear strength data sometimes has approximately constant variance, and most simple regression techniques assume constant variance. Four effective stress shear strength data sets are evaluated using both the constant variance (homoscedastic) and constant coefficient of variation (heteroscedastic) interpretations. The impact of the variance interpretation on slope stability is evaluated using infinite slope, homogeneous dam, and zoned dam examples. For relatively shallow infinite slope surfaces, the reliability index for the heteroscedastic interpretation of shear strength variance was about twice the reliability index obtained using the homoscedastic approach. In the dam examples, the difference in the reliability indices resulting from the heteroscedastic and homoscedastic interpretations was about one, indicating a tenfold increase in the probability of failure. The typical assumption of constant coefficient of variation of shear strength may result in unconservative estimates of the reliability of shallow failure surfaces and overly conservative results for deeper failure surfaces.  相似文献

Rock falls represent a large percentage of landslide-related hazards reported by Canadian railways in mountainous terrain. A 54.7?km-long section of railway through the Canadian Cordillera is examined that experiences, on average, 18 rock falls each year. An approach for rock fall hazard management is developed based on quantified risk. The approach focuses on defining railway operation procedures (freight train operations and track maintenance) that comply with quantified risks. Weather-based criteria that define periods when rock falls are more likely to occur along the study area are examined. These criteria are used herein to reduce exposure to rock falls and reduce their consequences. Several freight train operation strategies are proposed that comply with a tolerable level of risk adopted in this study for illustrative purposes. The approach provides a simple, flexible and practical strategy for railway operations that can be regularly adopted by the operators, and that is based on a more comprehensive assessment of quantified risk.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

A core principle of geotechnical engineering practice is the need to exercise judgement in evaluating soil and site conditions and in performing analyses. The requirement for considering judgement applies equally to performing deterministic or probabilistic analyses. In addition, for probabilistic analyses, choices must be made among the possible methods of analysis and the method of characterising variables. Consequently, geotechnical reliability studies inevitably involve significant uncertainties, and judgement is needed to perform reliability analyses and to evaluate the results. Two case histories, briefly described here, show that judgement and experience are essential prerequisites for meaningful assessment of geotechnical reliability.  相似文献

This paper introduces an efficiency improvement to the sparse‐grid geometric sampling methodology for assessing uncertainty in non‐linear geophysical inverse problems. Traditional sparse‐grid geometric sampling works by sampling in a reduced‐dimension parameter space bounded by a feasible polytope, e.g., a generalization of a polygon to dimension above two. The feasible polytope is approximated by a hypercube. When the polytope is very irregular, the hypercube can be a poor approximation leading to computational inefficiency in sampling. We show how the polytope can be regularized using a rotation and scaling based on principal component analysis. This simple regularization helps to increase the efficiency of the sampling and by extension the computational complexity of the uncertainty solution. We demonstrate this on two synthetic 1D examples related to controlled‐source electromagnetic and amplitude versus offset inversion. The results show an improvement of about 50% in the performance of the proposed methodology when compared with the traditional one. However, as the amplitude versus offset example shows, the differences in the efficiency of the proposed methodology are very likely to be dependent on the shape and complexity of the original polytope. However, it is necessary to pursue further investigations on the regularization of the original polytope in order to fully understand when a simple regularization step based on rotation and scaling is enough.  相似文献

To celebrate World Soil Day 2014, this editorial summary and Special Issue draws together a number of the most significant contributions that have appeared in Earth Surface Processes and Landforms since 2010. As a group they show the increasing importance of interdisciplinary work in this area of overlap, and point to significant opportunities for future research development, particularly with respect to integrated modelling and interactions with climate change. The transport of bromide (Br) under matric heads of 0, ?2, ?5, and ?10 cm using undisturbed soil columns was investigated for understanding the solute transport in arid soils. Undisturbed soil cores were collected at ground surface, directly below where tension infiltrometer measurements were made in the Amargosa Desert, Nevada, United States. Laboratory experiments were conducted by introducing water containing Br tracer into a soil column maintained at steady‐state conditions. The observed data of breakthrough curves (BTC) were well fitted to an one‐region model, except for the cores at saturation, and a core at the matric head of ?5 cm, from which the observed data were better fitted to a two‐region model. Fitted pore water velocities with the one‐region model ranged from 1.2 to 56.6 cm/h, and fitted dispersion coefficients (D) ranged from 2.2 to 100 cm2/h. Results for the core analyzed with the two‐region model indicated that D ranged from 27.6 to 70.9 cm2/h at saturation, and 25.7 cm2/h at the matric head of ?5 cm; fraction of mobile water (β) ranged from 0.18 to 0.65, and mass transfer coefficient (ω) ranged from 0.006 to 0.03. In summary, the water fluxes and Br dispersion coefficients at investigated matric heads were very high due to the coarseness of the soils and possibly due to preferential flow pathways. These high water fluxes and Br dispersion coefficients would lead to a higher risk of deeper leaching accumulating nitrate nitrogen to the groundwater, and have significant effects on the desert ecosystem.  相似文献
