We have used photometric images of ten barred galaxies in the B and I bands to infer the geometrical and dynamical parameters of their bars: Their length, (R
bar), their strengths, (S
b), and their corotation radii, (R
CR).These parameters have been obtained studying azimuthal profiles from the B and I band images of the galaxies. We find that R
CR is in all cases slightly larger than R
bar, with mean values close to 1.2 R
bar. We have also found a dependence of the ratio R
CR/R
bar on S
bar.

Since their discovery 20 year ago, transition region bright points have never been observed spectroscopically. Bright point properties have not been compared with similar transition region and coronal structures. In this work we have investigated three transient quiet Sun brightenings including a transition region bright point (TR BP), a coronal bright point (CBP) and a blinker. We use time-series observations of the extreme-ultraviolet emission lines of a wide range of temperature T (logT=5.3?–?6.4) from the EUV Imaging Spectrometer (EIS) onboard the Hinode satellite. We present the EIS temperature maps and Doppler maps, which are compared with magnetograms from the Michelson Doppler Imager (MDI) onboard the SOHO satellite. Doppler velocities of the TR BP and blinker are ≤?25 km?s?1, which is typical of transient TR phenomena. The Doppler velocities of the CBP were found to be ≤?20 km?s?1 with exception of those measured at logT=6.2 where a distinct bi-directional jet is observed. From an EM loci analysis we find evidence of single and double isothermal components in the TR BP and CBP, respectively. TR BP and CBP loci curves are characterized by broad distributions suggesting the existence of unresolved structure. By comparing and contrasting the physical characteristics of the events we find that the BP phenomena are an indication of multi-scaled self-similarity, given the similarities in both their underlying magnetic field configuration and evolution in relation to EUV flux changes. In contrast, the blinker phenomena and the TR BP are sufficiently dissimilar in their observed properties as to constitute different event classes. Our work is an indication that the measurement of similar characteristics across multiple event types holds class-predictive power, and is a significant step towards automated solar atmospheric multi-class classification of unresolved transient EUV sources. We analyze the role of weak photospheric flux concentrations that evolve in a filament channel, in the triggering of dynamic
changes in the shape of a filament. The high polarimetric sensitivity of THEMIS allowed us to detect weak flux concentrations
(few Gauss) associated with the filament development. The synoptic instruments (MDI, SOLIS) even if their sensitivity is much
less than THEMIS were useful to follow any subsequent strengthening of these flux concentrations after their identification
in the THEMIS magnetograms. We found that (1) the northern part of the filament develops an Hα barb at the same time that
weak minority polarity elements develop near a plage; (2) a section in the southern part of the Hα filament gradually disappears
and later reforms at the same time that several mixed-polarity magnetic elements appear, then subsequently cancel or spread
away from each other. These changes correspond to increases in EUV emission, as observed by TRACE, EIT, and CDS. This suggests
that the plasma is temporarily heated along the filament spine. An idealized sequence of force-free models of this filament
channel, based on plasma-supporting magnetic dips occurring in the windings of a very weakly twisted flux tube, naturally
explains the evolution of its southern part as being due to changes in the topology of the coronal magnetic field as the photospheric

The mid-Tertiary ignimbrites of the Sierra Madre Occidental of western Mexico constitute the largest continuous rhyolitic province in the world. The rhyolites appear to represent part of a continental magmatic arc that was emplaced when an eastward-dipping subduction zone was located beneath western Mexico.In the Batopilas region of the northern Sierra Madre Occidental the mid-Tertiary Upper Volcanic sequence is composed predominantly of rhyolitic ignimbrites, but volumetrically minor lava flows as mafic as basaltic andesite are also present. The basaltic andesite to rhyolite series is calc-alkalic and contains 1% K2O at 60% SiO2. Trace element abundances of a typical ignimbrite with 73% SiO2 are Sr 225 ppm, Rb 130 ppm, Y 32 ppm, Th 12 ppm, Zr 200 ppm, and Nb 15 ppm. The entire series plots as coherent and continuous trends on variation diagrams involving major and trace elements, and the trends are distinct from those of geographicallyassociated rocks of other suites. We interpret these and other geochemical variations to indicate that the rocks are comagmatic. Mineral chemistry, Sr isotopic data, and REE modelling support this interpretation.Least squares calculations show that the major element variations are consistent with formation of the basaltic andesite to rhyolite series by crystal fractionation of observed phenocryst phases in approximate modal proportions. In addition, calculations modelling the behavior of Sr with the incompatible trace element Th favor a fractional crystallization origin over a crustal anatexis origin for the rock series. The fractionating minerals included plagioclase (> 50%), and lesser amounts of Fe-Ti oxides, pyroxenes, and/or hornblende. The voluminous ignimbrites represent no more than 20% of the original mass of a mantle-derived mafic parental magma. 相似文献

Sedimentology and kinematics of a large, retrogressive growth-fault system in Upper Carboniferous deltaic sediments, western Ireland 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Growth faulting is a common feature of many deltaic environments and is vital in determining local sediment dispersal and accumulation, and hence in controlling the resultant sedimentary facies distribution and architecture. Growth faults occur on a range of scales, from a few centimetres to hundreds of metres, with the largest growth faults frequently being under‐represented in outcrops that are often smaller than the scale of feature under investigation. This paper presents data from the exceptionally large outcrops of the Cliffs of Moher, western Ireland, where a growth‐fault complex affects strata up to 60 m in thickness and extends laterally for ≈ 3 km. Study of this Namurian (Upper Carboniferous) growth‐fault system enables the relationship between growth faulting and sedimentation to be detailed and permits reconstruction of the kinematic history of faulting. Growth faulting was initiated with the onset of sandstone deposition on a succession of silty mudstones that overlie a thin, marine shale. The decollement horizon developed at the top of the marine shale contact for the first nine faults, by which time aggradation in the hangingwall exceeded 60 m in thickness. After this time, failure planes developed at higher stratigraphic levels and were associated with smaller scale faults. The fault complex shows a dominantly landward retrogressive movement, in which only one fault was largely active at any one time. There is no evidence of compressional features at the base of the growth faults, thus suggesting open‐ended slides, and the faults display both disintegrative and non‐disintegrative structure. Thin‐bedded, distal mouth bar facies dominate the hangingwall stratigraphy and, in the final stages of growth‐fault movement, erosion of the crests of rollover structures resulted in the highest strata being restricted to the proximity of the fault. These upper erosion surfaces on the fault scarp developed erosive chutes that were cut parallel to flow and are downlapped by the distal hangingwall strata of younger growth faults. 相似文献

This paper considers volcanogenic exhalation mineralization using data from 35 years of observation of fumarole activity during an earlier phase of the posteruptive activity of the Second Cone, which is one of the New Tolbachik volcanoes that were formed during the eruption at the North Vent of the Great Tolbachik Fissure Eruption (Kamchatka, 1975–1976). We describe the main types of mineral associations, identify the key mineral species and the secondary and accessory minerals, as well as the sequence of mineral generation. The recent discovery of ice-striated surfaces associated with the late Paleozoic Aquidauana Formation suggests that glaciers coming from southwest Africa reached westernmost parts of the Paraná Basin in central Brazil. Abrasion features were developed by glaciers moving from SSE towards NNW, mainly on an unconsolidated bed. These records expand to about 1,050,000 km2, the coverage of the late Paleozoic glaciation in the region of the Paraná Basin in Western Gondwana.
