The growth of supermassive black holes by merging and accretion in hierarchical models of galaxy formation is studied by means of Monte Carlo simulations. A tight linear relation between masses of black holes and masses of bulges arises if the mass accreted by supermassive black holes scales linearly with the mass-forming stars and if the redshift evolution of mass accretion tracks closely that of star formation. Differences in redshift evolution between black hole accretion and star formation introduce a considerable scatter in this relation. A non-linear relation between black hole accretion and star formation results in a non-linear relation between masses of remnant black holes and masses of bulges. The relation of black hole mass to bulge luminosity observed in nearby galaxies and its scatter are reproduced reasonably well by models in which black hole accretion and star formation are linearly related but do not track each other in redshift. This suggests that a common mechanism determines the efficiency for black hole accretion and the efficiency for star formation, especially for bright bulges.  相似文献

We find statistically significant correlations in the cosmological matter power spectrum over the full range of observable scales. While the correlations between individual modes are weak, the band-averaged power spectrum shows strong non-trivial correlations. The correlations are significant when the modes in either one or both bands are in the non-linear regime, and approach 100 per cent for pairs of bands in which all the modes are non-linear. The correlations are weaker, but not absent, when computed in redshift space. As estimates of the power spectrum from galaxy surveys require band-averaging, the correlations must be taken into account when comparing a measured power spectrum with theoretical models.  相似文献

Abstract— The Carcote meteorite, detected in 1888 in the northern Chilean Andes, is a brecciated, weakly shocked H5 chondrite. It contains a few barred olivine chondrules and, even more rarely, fan-shaped or granular orthopyroxene chondrules. The chondrules are situated in a fine-grained matrix that consists predominantly of olivine and orthopyroxene with accessory clinopyroxene, troilite, chromite, merrillite, and plagioclase. The metal phase is mainly kamacite with subordinate taenite and traces of native Cu. In its bulk rock composition, Carcote compares well with other H5 chondrites so far analysed, except for a distinctly higher C content. Microprobe analyses revealed the following mineral compositions: olivine (Fa16.5–20), orthopyroxene (Fs14–17.5), diopsidic clinopyroxene (FS6–7), plagioclase (An15–20). Troilite is stoichimetric FeS with traces of Ni and Cr; chromite has Cr/(Cr + Al) of 0.86, Fe2+/(Fe2+ + Mg) of 0.80-0.88 and contains considerable amounts of Ti, Mn, and Zn. Merrillite is close to the theoretical formula Ca18(Mg, Fe)2Na2(PO4)14, although with a Na deficiency not compensated for by excess Ca; the Mg/(Mg + Fe2+) ratio of the Carcote merrilite is 0.93-0.95. Kamacite and taenite have Ni contents of 5.6–7.2 and 17.1–23.4 wt%, respectively. Native Cu contains about 3.1–3.3 wt% Fe and 1.6 wt% Ni. Application of different geothermometers to the Carcote H5 chondrite yielded apparently inconsistent results. The highest temperature range of 850–950 °C (at 1 bar) is derived from the Ca-in-opx thermometer. From the cpx-opx solvus geothermometers and the two-pyroxene Fe-Mg exchange geothermometer, a lower temperature range of 750–840 °C is estimated, whereas lower and more variable temperatures of 630–770 °C are obtained from the Ca-in-olivine geothermometer. Recent calibrations of the olivine-spinel geothermometer yielded a still lower temperature range of 570–670 °C, which fits well to the temperature information derived from the Ni distribution between kamacite and taenite. Judging from crystal chemical considerations, we assume that these different temperatures reflect the closure of different exchange equilibria during cooling of the meteorite parent body.  相似文献

Gravity observations made over the Groningen gasfield from 1978 onwards are available. The existing gravity data were reanalysed and a new survey was carried out. The observed gravity changes obtained during four surveys, spanning an 18-year period, were compared with the gravity effect due to natural gas extraction computed from the reservoir model and the production data. The random error in the gravity values is small enough to detect the effect of gas extraction after a few years (up to 2 μgal/year). The trends obtained from observed and calculated gravity changes agree well within their expected error margins after statistical data snooping. Due to the inadequate measurement set-up of the previous surveys, systematic errors present in the gravity data hampered the use of this data for refinement of the reservoir and the production models. However, with improved gravity monitoring, in particular a very systematic network set-up and well-calibrated instruments, this should now be feasible. By using the network analysis from the 1996 measurements for the planning of a network in space and time, most of the current problems can be avoided.  相似文献

Monthly mean surface pressure patterns in the European area are reconstructed for those winter and summer seasons of the 16th century with outstanding climatic anomalies being either widespread over Europe or remarkably intensive in some European regions. From the available documentary information about weather characteristics and their sequences, it proved possible to infer prevalent processes of lower tropospheric advection of typical air masses and to assess the position and strength of major surface pressure centres on a monthly scale. For comparison with modern pressure patterns, monthly mean sea level pressure (SLP) grids from the 20th century have been selected for seasons with similar climatic anomalies. There are broad coincidences between these pressure patterns of the 16th and the 20th centuries except for cold summer seasons. Finally, results from the 16th century are discussed in terms of circulation dynamics (different phases of the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) in winter, decreasing frequency of anticyclonic ridging in summer).  相似文献

 A variety of cognate basalt to basaltic andesite inclusions and dacite pumices occur in the 7-Ma Rattlesnake Tuff of eastern Oregon. The tuff represents ∼280 km3 of high-silica rhyolite magma zoned from highly differentiated rhyolite near the roof to less evolved rhyolite at deeper levels. The mafic inclusions provide a window into the processes acting beneath a large silicic chamber. Quenched basaltic andesite inclusions are substantially enriched in incompatible trace elements compared to regional primitive high-alumina olivine tholeiite (HAOT) lavas, but continuous chemical and mineralogical trends indicate a genetic relationship between them. Basaltic andesite evolved from primitive basalt mainly through protracted crystal fractionation and multiple cycles (≥10) of mafic recharge, which enriched incompatible elements while maintaining a mafic bulk composition. The crystal fractionation history is partially preserved in the mineralogy of crystal-rich inclusions (olivine, plagioclase ± clinopyroxene) and the recharge history is supported by the presence of mafic inclusions containing olivines of Fo80. Small amounts of assimilation (∼2%) of high-silica rhyolite magma improves the calculated fit between observed and modeled enrichments in basaltic andesite and reduces the number of fractionation and recharge cycles needed. The composition of dacite pumices is consistent with mixing of equal proportions of basaltic andesite and least-evolved, high-silica rhyolite. In support of the mixing model, most dacite pumices have a bimodal mineral assemblage with crystals of rhyolitic and basaltic parentage. Equilibrium dacite phenocrysts are rare. Dacites are mainly the product of mingling of basaltic andesite and rhyolite before or during eruption and to a lesser extent of equilibration between the two. The Rattlesnake magma column illustrates the feedback between mafic and silicic magmas that drives differentiation in both. Low-density rhyolite traps basalts and induces extensive fractionation and recharge that causes incompatible element enrichment relative to the primitive input. An engineering and environmental geological map of the Kathmandu Valley in Nepal has been elaborated within a project of German-Nepalese cooperation. In the Kathmandu Valley, the major geo-environmental problems arise from haphazard exploitation of geologic resources, local landslide zones, severe problems of garbage disposal, river flooding and a dramatic river pollution. The map was prepared by the use of GIS techniques. It contains all basic geological and environmental data, as geotechnical risk zones (landslide-prone areas or those of poor foundation conditions), areas for preferable extraction of construction material and those not to be allowed to be exploited, areas of immediate need of reforestation in order to prevent landslide or badland development, groundwater protection zones, and suitable garbage disposal sites. The mean sea surface topography in the Baltic Sea and adjacent waters is reliably known in the Nordic height system NH 60. Using this knowledge we estimate differences between NH 60, based on the Amsterdam zero point, and Russian, Polish, and German height systems along the southeastern coast of the Baltic Sea, based on the Kronstadt zero point. The differences agree within a few centimeters. We also make a simple study of the mean sea level difference between Kronstadt and Amsterdam (which is found to have been approximately 25 cm when sea level was still to be seen there).  相似文献
