Many different runout prediction methods can be applied to estimate the mobility of future debris flows during hazard assessment. The present article reviews the empirical, analytical, simple flow routing and numerical techniques. All these techniques were applied to back-calculate a debris flow, which occurred in 1982 at La Guingueta catchment, in the Eastern Pyrenees. A sensitivity analysis of input parameters was carried out, while special attention was paid to the influence of rheological parameters. We used the Voellmy fluid rheology for our analytical and numerical modelling, since this flow resistance law coincided best with field observations. The simulation results indicated that the “basal” friction coefficients rather affect the runout distance, while the “turbulence” terms mainly influence flow velocity. A comparison of the velocity computed on the fan showed that the analytical model calculated values similar to the numerical ones. The values of our rheological parameters calibrated at La Guingueta agree with data back-calculated for other debris flows. Empirical relationships represent another method to estimate total runout distance. The results confirmed that they contain an important uncertainty and they are strictly valid only for the conditions, which were the basis for their development. With regards to the simple flow routing algorithm, this methods could satisfactorily simulate the total area affected by the 1982 debris flow, but it was not able to directly calculate total runout distance and velocity. Finally, a suggestion on how different runout prediction methods can be applied to generate debris-flow hazard maps is presented. Taking into account the definition of hazard and intensity, the best choice would be to divide the resulting hazard maps into two types: “final hazard maps” and “preliminary hazard maps”. Only the use of numerical models provided final hazard maps, because they could incorporate different event magnitudes and they supplied output-values for intensity calculation. In contrast, empirical relationships and flow routing algorithms, or a combination of both, could be applied to create preliminary hazard maps. The present study only focussed on runout prediction methods. Resonantly driven Alfvén waves are studied in non-uniform stationary magnetic flux tubes. Analytic dissipative MHD solutions are obtained for the Lagrangian displacement and the Eulerian perturbation of the total pressure. These analytic solutions are valid in the dissipative layer and in the two overlap regions to the left and the right of the dissipative layer. From these analytic solutions we obtain the fundamental conservation law and the jump conditions for resonantly driven Alfvén waves in magnetic flux tubes with an equilibriun flow. The fundamental conservation law and the jump conditions depend on the equilibrium flow in a more complicated way than just a Doppler shift. The effects of an equlibrium flow are not to be predicted easily in general terms with the exception that the polarization of the driven Alfvén waves is still in the magnetic surfaces and perpendicular to the magnetic field lines as it is in a static flux tube.  相似文献

The present paper discusses the implementation of the SGHR method (Sakurai, Goossens, and Hollweg, 1991; Goossens, Ruderman, and Hollweg, 1995) in a numerical scheme for determining resonantly driven Alfvén waves in nonuniform magnetic flux tubes. This method is based on jump conditions over the dissipative layer which are obtained from an asymptotic analysis of analytical solutions to simplified versions of the linear non-ideal MHD equations in this dissipative layer. The emphasis is on the computational simplicity and the accuracy of the method. The method derives its computational simplicity from the fact that it circumvents the numerical integration of the non-ideal MHD equations. The implementation only requires the numerical integration of the ideal MHD equations away from the resonant position. There is no need for a special integration scheme and a PC suffices as a hardware tool.The accuracy of the method is verified by means of test computations. These test computations deal with the loss of power of acoustic waves in sunspots by resonant absorption of Alfvén waves. Results for the absorption coefficients obtained with the SGHR method are compared with known results in the literature obtained by integration of the full set of the linearized non-ideal MHD equations. The agreement is excellent and identifies the SGHR method as a powerful and extremely easy to use tool for studying resonant Alfvén waves.  相似文献

We report high-precision analyses of internally-normalised Ni isotope ratios in 12 bulk iron meteorites. Our measurements of 60Ni/61Ni, 62Ni/61Ni and 64Ni/61Ni normalised to 58Ni/61Ni and expressed in parts per ten thousand (?) relative to NIST SRM 986 as and , vary by 0.146, 0.228 and 0.687, respectively. The precision on a typical analysis is 0.03?, 0.05? and 0.08? for , and , respectively, which is comparable to our sample reproducibility. We show that this ‘mass-independent’ Ni isotope variability cannot be ascribed to interferences, inaccurate correction of instrumental or natural mass-dependent fractionation, fractionation controlled by nuclear field shift effects, nor the influence of cosmic ray spallation. These results thus document the presence of mass-independent Ni isotopic heterogeneity in bulk meteoritic samples, as previously proposed by Regelous et al. (2008) (EPSL 272, 330-338), but our new analyses are more precise and include determination of 64Ni. Intriguingly, we find that terrestrial materials do not yield homogenous internally-normalised Ni isotope compositions, which, as pointed out by Young et al. (2002) (GCA 66, 1095-1104), may be the expected result of using the exponential (kinetic) law and atomic masses to normalise all fractionation processes. The certified Ni isotope reference material NIST SRM 986 defines zero in this study, while appropriate ratios for the bulk silicate Earth are given by the peridotites JP-1 and DTS-2 and, relative to NIST SRM 986, yield deviations in , and of −0.006?, 0.036? and 0.119?, respectively. There is a strong positive correlation between and in iron meteorites analyses, with a slope of 3.03 ± 0.71. The variations of Ni isotope anomalies in iron meteorites are consistent with heterogeneous distribution of a nucleosynthetic component from a type Ia supernova into the proto-solar nebula.  相似文献

Nodules consisting of fluorapatite are concentrated as a discrete band in the polymetallic sulfide ore of the Gamsberg deposit in central Bushmanland, South Africa. Their shape, zonal features, and geochemistry, in particular rare earth element (REE) abundances, are similar to authigenic francolite concretions that precipitate during diagenesis in organic-rich muds. As a result, the apatite nodules are regarded as primary. The nodules have a strong lithostratigraphic control, occurring at the transition of siliciclastic-hosted pyrite–sphalerite–graphite mineralization to calc-silicate-hosted pyrrhotite–sphalerite mineralization. Mineralogical and chemical evidence indicates that this transition also corresponds to a paleo-redox boundary that separates sediments deposited under oxygen-deficient conditions from those that developed in a more oxygenated environment. The apatite nodules can morphologically and chemically clearly be distinguished from coarse apatite grains that occur in oxide-facies iron formations stratigraphically above the ore horizon. However, similar REE profiles and in particular positive Eu anomalies in both types of apatite are indicative of a close genetic relationship between the two units and favor a common hydrothermal origin of the P. The contrasting morphologies and chemical signatures of the two occurrences can rather be attributed to differences in behavior of the phosphates during precipitation within the contrasting host sediments (chemical versus fine-grained clastic). Taking modern phosphorites as an analogue, these results are used to postulate a genetic model for the deposition of the sulfide ore and associated iron formations. The model envisages differentiation of the depositional basin into oxygen-deficient basin facies hosting the sulfide ore and oxygenated shelf facies, which are composed of manganiferous iron formations. The intimate association of sedimentary apatite with base metal sulfides indicates that basin conditions were conducive to the precipitation of both phases. Instability processes at glacial deposits represent an important hazard in mountainous areas. During the spring seasons of 2010 and 2011, two falls of large boulders (18 and 55? m3) initiated in a lateral moraine in the Rebaixader catchment (Central Pyrenees, Spain). Detailed information was gathered due to the debris-flow monitoring system installed along the torrent. Meteorological data showed that the two rockfalls were triggered without important rainfall amounts. Field surveys, ground vibration acquired at geophones and the movie recorded with a video camera provided unique information on the rockfall occurrence and dynamics. In addition, the information gave an excellent opportunity to show the importance of monitored data for the calibration of model parameters for runout simulations. The analysis focussed on the 2011 event and showed that the boulder passed rolling and bouncing through the monitored torrent reach. The velocity estimates in this reach range from 3 to 9 ?m/s. The 2011 rockfall was also back-analysed by a two-dimensional physically based model, which was fitted by the monitored and field data. The results of the simulation coincided well with recorded measurements, although the output could be improved by the application of a three-dimensional model.  相似文献

Anthropogenic sources of carbon from landfill or waste leachate can promote reductive dissolution of in situ arsenic (As) and enhance the mobility of As in groundwater. Groundwater from residential-supply wells in a fractured crystalline-rock aquifer adjacent to a Superfund site in Raymond, New Hampshire, USA, showed evidence of locally enhanced As mobilization in relatively reducing (mixed oxic-anoxic to anoxic) conditions as determined by redox classification and other lines of evidence. Redox classification was determined from geochemical indicators based on threshold concentrations of dissolved oxygen (DO), nitrate (NO 3 ), iron (Fe2+), manganese (Mn2+), and sulfate (SO 4 2– ). Redox conditions were evaluated also based on methane (CH4), excess nitrogen gas (N2) from denitrification, the oxidation state of dissolved As speciation (As(III) and As(V)), and several stable isotope ratios. Samples from the residential-supply wells primarily exhibit mixed redox conditions, as most have long open boreholes (typically 50–100?m) that receive water from multiple discrete fractures with contrasting groundwater chemistry and redox conditions. The methods employed in this study can be used at other sites to gauge redox conditions and the potential for As mobilization in complex fractured crystalline-rock aquifers where multiple lines of evidence are likely needed to understand As occurrence, mobility, and transport.  相似文献

During rheomorphism subsequent to fallout deposition, a portion of the densely welded fallout of the La Grieta Member flowed back into the vent from where it was erupted, while the rest of it flowed down the outer slopes of the Las Cañadas caldera in Tenerife. The welded fallout and conduit-vent structure are physically connected and constitute a rare example of this type of deposits rooted to its feeder conduit and exposed in the caldera wall. The lower part of the vent-filling rheomorphic rocks shows gas bubbles and cavities that increase in size (up to 4 m) down vent. Bubbles are deformed against other bubbles, against the steep vent walls, flattened parallel to the flow foliation planes, and elongated parallel to the flow lineation and flow fold axes. The preservation of such giant bubbles, rather than their formation, seems to be a pretty unique feature of the phonolitic products investigated here and it is likely the result of the combination of factors that acted to preserve, in the surrounding of the glass transition interval, the sealing and the late stage cooling of a pressurized system. In addition, strain drop at the base of the vent-filling rheomorphic flow caused by flow stopping against vertical vent walls may have promoted rapid gas exsolution and the formation of large bubbles.  相似文献
