Strategic planning in the Paris agglomeration in the 1960s and 1970s sought to correct centre—periphery and west—east imbalances in the provision of employment and services, and to promote a nodal structure within the essentially amorphous suburbs. The suburbanization of manufacturing employment and certain higher-order services, the workings of the housing market and the centrifugal dispersal of manual workers, the construction of suburban ‘poles’ and new towns, and the programme of road and rail investment are each reviewed in the context of these objectives. Success was only partial: failure to control adequately office development in central Paris and Hauts-de-Seine, to provide the suburbs with orbital as well as tangential transport connections, and to resist the embourgeoisement of the Paris housing stock left much of the imbalance in force.  相似文献

Surface geochemical mapping of Rn, Hg and pH on the summit of Kilauea volcano, Hawaii, has shown some of the characteristics of outgassing. Rn concentrations measured in shallow ground gas are highest (10 to 155 units, i.e. up to 0.016 nCi/l222Rn) over deep structures associated with the summit caldera, low (1 to 5 units) over the upper rift zones (which are underlain by shallow intrusions) and low to negative (1 to -3 units) over most of the volcanically inactive peripheral areas. High Rn concentrations were measured over peripheral well-developed structures such as the Kaoiki and Koae fault systems (45 and 12 units, respectively). The pattern of Rn values broadly suggests the existence of a summit-wide convection system interrupted locally by specific permeable structures. The low pH (3.5 to 5.6) of soils over the caldera is suggested to be largely due to the sulfurous component of the ground gas. The low concentrations of Hg (5 to 80 ppb) in these soils are postulated as being partly a function of subsurface complexing of Hg with the abundant sulfur. The shallow intrusions below the upper rift zones appear to have outgassed much of their sulfur content, so soils in these areas are only slightly acid (5.6 to 6.2), allowing the accumulation of Hg to concentrations of several thousands of ppb. These conditions change during extrusive (and intrusive) events with the increases in shallow subsurface temperatures and volatiles in ground gas producing an increase in Rn concentration, and a decrease in soil Hg due to volatilization. After such events, Rn concentration decreases, and soil Hg increases significantly.  相似文献

In the Samail ophiolite,147Sm-143Nd,87Rb-87Sr, and18O/16O isotopic systems have been used to distinguish between sea-floor hydrothermal alteration and primary magmatic isotopic variations. The Rb-Sr and18O/16O isotopic systems clearly exhibit sensitivity to hydrothermal interactions with seawater while the Sm-Nd system appears essentially undisturbed. Internal isochrons have been determined by the147Sm-143Nd method using coexisting plagioclase and pyroxene and give crystallization ages of 130 ± 12m.y. from Ibra and 100 ± 20 m.y. from Wadi Fizh. These ages are interpreted as the time of formation of the Samail oceanic crust and are older than the inferred emplacement age of 65–85 m.y. The initial143Nd/144Nd ratios for a tectonized harzburgite, cumulate gabbros, plagiogranite, sheeted dikes and a basalt have a limited range in εNd of from 7.5 to 8.6 for all lithologies, demonstrating a clear oceanic affinity and supporting earlier interpretations based on geologic observations and geochemistry. The87Sr/86Sr initial ratios on the same rocks have an extremely large range of from 0.70296 to 0.70650 (εSr = ?19.7 to +30.5) and the δ18O values vary from 2.6 to 12.7. These large variations are clearly consistent with hydrothermal interaction of seawater with the oceanic crust. A model is presented for the closed system exchange of Sr and O, that in principle illustrates how the Sr isotopic data may be utilized to estimate the water/rock ratio and subsequently used to evaluate the temperature of equilibration between the water and silicates from the18O/16O water-rock fractionation.  相似文献

For some time, sea-floor spreading has been hypothesized for the Mid-Cayman Rise based on inferences from seismicity, heat flow, topography and plate geometry. Here we present magnetic anomaly inversions from which a reasonable record of sea-floor spreading emerges. We obtain total opening rates of 20 ± 2 mm/yr for 0–2.4 m.y. B.P. and 40 ± 2 mm/yr for 2.4–6.0 m.y. B.P. Data on the west flank extend the half-opening rate of 20 mm/yr back to 8.3 m.y. B.P. Spreading has been very nearly symmetric. These new observations place important constraints on plate tectonic reconstructions by defining the relative motion between the North American and Caribbean plates. They also shed some light on sea-floor spreading processes in which the spreading center is a secondary feature in the sense that it is over an order of magnitude shorter than the adjoining transform faults.  相似文献

Summary The stress sensitivitiesS x andS R of susceptibility and remanence for titanomagnetite-bearing rocks are calculated in terms of magnetostriction constants 100 and 111 and anisotropy constantsK 1,K 2 of the magnetic minerals.S x andS R are represented by quite different algebraic expressions but happen to have comparable numerical values over the whole range of titanomagnetite compositions. Both increase strongly with titanium content. This leads to more optimistic calculations of tectonomagnetic effects than with the previously assumed stress sensitivity for pure magnetite.  相似文献

Sakhalin has been affected by several phases of Cretaceous and Tertiary deformation due to the complex interaction of plates in the northwest Pacific region. A detailed understanding of the strain is important because it will provide constraints on plate-scale processes that control the formation and deformation of marginal sedimentary basins. Anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility (AMS) data were obtained from fine-grained mudstones and siltstones from 22 localities in Sakhalin in order to provide information concerning tectonic strain. AMS data reliably record ancient strain tensor orientations before significant deformation of the sediments occurred. Paleomagnetically determined vertical-axis rotations of crustal rocks allow rotation of the fabrics back to their original orientation. Results from southwest Sakhalin indicate a N035°E-directed net tectonic transport from the mid-Paleocene to the early Miocene, which is consistent with the present-day relative motion between the Okhotsk Sea and Eurasian plates. Reconstruction of early–late Miocene AMS fabrics in east Sakhalin indicates a tectonic transport direction of N040°E. In west Sakhalin, the transport direction appears to have remained relatively consistent from the Oligocene to the late Miocene, but it has a different attitude of N080°E. This suggests local deflection of the stress and strain fields, which was probably associated with opening of the northern Tatar Strait. A northward-directed tectonic transport is observed in Miocene sediments in southeast Sakhalin, mid-Eocene sediments in east Sakhalin, and in Late Cretaceous rocks of west and northern Sakhalin, which may be associated with northwestward motion and subduction of the Pacific Plate in the Tertiary period. The boundaries of the separate regions defined by the AMS data are consistent with present-day plate models and, therefore, provide meaningful constraints on the tectonic evolution of Sakhalin.  相似文献

Origin of the in situ stress field in south-eastern Australia   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3  
The in situ stress field of south‐eastern Australia inferred from earthquake focal mechanisms and bore‐hole breakouts is unusual in that it is characterised by large obliquity between the maximum horizontal compressive stress orientation (SHmax) and the absolute plate motion azimuth. The evolution of the neotectonic strain field deduced from historical seismicity and both onshore and offshore faulting records is used to address the origin of this unusual stress field. Strain rates derived from estimates of the seismic moment release rate (up to ~10?16 s?1) are compatible with Quaternary fault–slip rates. The record of more or less continuous tectonic activity extends back to the terminal Miocene or early Pliocene (10–5 Ma). Terminal Miocene tectonic activity was characterised by regional‐scale tilting and local uplift and erosion, now best preserved by unconformities in offshore basins. Plate‐scale stress modelling suggests the in situ stress field reflects increased coupling of the Australian and Pacific Plate boundary in the late Miocene, associated with the formation of the Southern Alps in New Zealand.  相似文献

A series of experiments on a synthetic, pigeonite-saturated, basaltic shergottite were carried out to constrain the variation of D(Eu/Gd)pigeonite/melt and D(Eu/Sm)pigeonite/melt with oxygen fugacity (fO2). The experiments have been run under both dry and hydrous conditions. The shergottite was doped with 0.1, 0.5, and 1.0 wt.% Eu, Gd, and Sm oxides in different experiments and was equilibrated at liquidus conditions for 24 hours. D(Eu/Gd)pigeonite/melt in dry melts ranges from 0.156 ± 0.014 (fO2 = IW − 1) to 0.630 ± 0.102 (IW + 3.5). D(Eu/Sm)pigeonite/melt in dry melts ranges from 0.279 ± 0.021 (IW − 1) to 1.114 ± 0.072 (IW + 3.5). Due to difficulties with low-fO2 experiments, hydrous distribution coefficients were measured, but were not used in the calibration of the Eu-oxybarometers. These two Eu-oxybarometers provide an accurate way to measure fO2 recorded during pigeonite crystallization, thereby yielding a record of fO2 during the earliest period of Martian meteorite parent magma crystallization history.Using this new calibration, Martian meteorite pigeonite cores record fO2 values of IW − 0.6 (±0.3) (QUE94201) to IW + 1.9 (±0.6) (Shergotty). These new values differ in magnitude, but not trend, from previously published data. The pigeonite Eu-oxybarometer yields an fO2 range in the basaltic shergottites of 2 to 3 orders of magnitude. Several processes have been proposed to explain the origin of this fO2 range, the majority of which rely on assimilation of an oxidized source. A potential correlation between this new pigeonite data and recent Fe-Ti oxide data, however, is consistent with intrinsic fO2 differences in the magma source region being responsible for the measured fO2 variations. This implies that the Martian meteorite source region, the mantle or lithosphere, may be heterogeneous in nature. However, the process of assimilation cannot be completely ruled out in that an assimilation event that took place before crystallization commenced would result in the overprinting of the source region fO2 signature.  相似文献
