The isotope ratios 33S/32S and 34S/32S have been measured in sulphur fractions extracted from samples of the meteorites Allende and Eagle Station by leaching at successively greater acid concentrations and higher temperatures. On a three isotope plot of δ33Sδ34S most of the data lie on or close to the mass fractionation line. The last fraction of sulphur extracted from a bulk Allende sample lies off the line and has an approximately 1%. excess in the 33/32S ratio.Previous searches for anomalous abundance patterns of 32S, 33S, 34S and 36S have been reported by HULSTON and THODE (1965a,b), THODE and REES (1971), and REES and THODE (1972). No isotope abundance variations were found, in the meteorite and lunar samples studied, which could not be explained on the basis of either mass dependent isotope fractionation or, in the special case of iron meteorites, cosmic ray production of 33S and 36S. We report here preliminary results of a renewed search for isotopically anomalous sulphur in which we are concentrating on the Allende and Eagle Station meteorites, both of which contain anomalous oxygen (CLAYTON ., 1973, 1976). In a first attempt to distinguish between normal sulphur and any possible anomalous sulphur, we have leached both bulk samples and hand separated components of these meteorites with hydrochloric acid.CLAYTON and RAMADURAI (1977) suggested that the presence of isotopically anomalous sulphur would be evidence for the existence of presolar grains which are relics of nucleosynthesis in certain zones of supernova expansion. In particular they suggested that sulphides of titanium are good candidates for isotopic analysis. These are not expected to exist in conventional solar equilibrium condensation sequences, but might be abundant in condensates from silicon burning shells of supernovae. Our chemical procedures were already completed when CLAYTON and RAMADURAI'S suggestions came to our attention and it must be stressed that so far, in all cases but one we have examined only sulphur from sulphides which are decomposed by HC1. Thus we may not have sampled sulphides of the type suggested by CLAYTON and RAMADURAI.All samples of the Allende meteorite were ground finer than 50μm before acid extraction of sulphur. Samples of sulphur were extracted from the various phases of the meteorites by using successively stronger hydrochloric acid leaches, longer times and higher temperatures of reaction. Sulphur initially released as H2S was successively converted to CdS, Ag2S and SF6, this latter compound being analysed mass spectrometrically (THODE and REES, 1971). Analyses of nine SF6 samples prepared from Ag2S originally derived from Canyon Diablo troilite were also performed in order to monitor fluorination and mass spectrometry precision and to establish the zero points ofthe isotope variation scales. The results are shown in Table 1. The sulphur contents of the various samples were determined gravimetrically as Ag2S. The bulk and matrix samples are probably a few percent low because of mechanical losses. The percentages of sulphur in each fraction of a sample extracted during each leaching stage are given in the table. The total sulphur content in the bulk and matrix samples of the Allende meteorite i.e., the sum of the sulphur contents of the individual fractions, varies from 1.8 to 2.08%, the highest percentage being in the matrix. Groundwater flow and contaminant transport are strongly influenced by hydrogeological spatial variation. Understanding the textural heterogeneity of aquifer and aquitard units is critical for predicting preferential flow pathways, but is often hindered by sparse hydrogeological data, widely spaced data points, and complex stratigraphy. Here, we demonstrate the application of a relatively new air permeameter technology, providing a cost-effective, rapid alternative for characterizing hydrostratigraphic units in the field. The aim of this research is to (1) characterize the variation of saturated hydraulic conductivity across shallow-marine hydrostratigraphic units of the Whanganui Basin, New Zealand, and (2) assess the variation of saturated hydraulic conductivity within individual hydrostratigraphic units and relate these changes to facies and depositional environments. Results suggest heterogeneity within fine-grained aquitard units is controlled by bioturbation, whereby burrowing, ingestion and defecation results in grain size segregation and differential micrite cementation. Coarse-grained heterolithic aquifer facies display sharp changes in permeability across planar to cross-bedded sets, related to current and wave energy fluctuations within shallow-marine depositional settings. Bedding plane orientation creates high permeability zones that promotes down dip subsurface flow. Down dip gradation of coarse-grained nearshore facies into fine-grained shelf facies along the paleo shoreline-shelf transect is suggested to promote lateral and vertical groundwater flow within the basin fill. Air permeameter techniques have potential for application within groundwater basins around the world, providing datasets that facilitate greater understanding of groundwater systems, informing practices and policies for targeted water quality management. 相似文献

This paper derives a notional future carbon budget for UK agriculture, land use, land use change and forestry sectors (ALULUCF). The budget is based on a bottom-up marginal abatement cost curve (MACC) derived for a range of mitigation measures for specified adoption scenarios for the years 2012, 2017 and 2022. The results indicate that in 2022 around 6.36 MtCO2e could be abated at negative or zero cost. Furthermore, in the same year, over 17% of agricultural GHG emissions (7.85 MtCO2e) could be abated at a cost of less than the 2022 Shadow Price of Carbon (£34 (tCO2e)???1). The development of robust MACCs faces a range of methodological hurdles that complicate cost-effectiveness appraisal in ALULUCF relative to other sectors. We useP andS times listed in the International Seismological Summary to relocate 23 historical earthquakes (1927–1963) reported as occurring at or below 670 km. In all cases, our relocated hypocenters are shallower than the starting depths; furthermore, all events converge to 691 km or less, with a precision estimated at ±10 km. This study upholds the results of Stark and Frohlich, who had usedpP–P times of post-WWSSN earthquakes to constrain reliable hypocentral depths to no greater than 684 km. This paper examines the constitution of ‘sustainable management’ within the context of the New Zealand marine environment. Firstly this paper examines the difference between ‘sustainable ecosystems’ and ‘sustainable utilisation’. The distinction is important if we are to make sense of the different ways in which various stakeholders (fishers, fisheries companies, scientists, fisheries managers and environmental groups) use ‘sustainability’ in the management of New Zealand's marine environment. We then examine how contestation results in sustainable management becoming a governmentality. We propose that such contestation transforms stakeholders into subjects whose everyday practices and relationships are influenced by seemingly incommensurable understandings of the lexicon that surrounds sustainable management. We conclude try considering how the potential revelation of new unknowns may be needed in order for disparate stakeholders to forge a unified approach to New Zealand's marine management. 相似文献

The North Sea Benthos Project 2000 was initiated as a follow-up to the 1986 ICES North Sea Benthos Survey with the major aim to identify changes in the macrofauna species distribution and community structure in the North Sea and their likely causes.The results showed that the large-scale spatial distribution of macrofauna communities in the North Sea hardly changed between 1986 and 2000, with the main divisions at the 50 m and 100 m depth contours. Water temperature and salinity as well as wave exposure, tidal stress and primary production were influential environmental factors on a large (North Sea-wide) spatial scale.The increase in abundance and regional changes in distribution of various species with a southern distribution in the North Sea in 2000 were largely associated with an increase in sea surface temperature, primary production and, thus, food supply. This can be most likely related to the North Sea hydro-climate change in the late 1980s influenced by the variability in the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO). Only one cold-temperate species decreased in abundance in 2000 at most of the stations. Indications for newly established populations of offshore non-native species were not found.Differences in macrofauna community structure on localised spatial scales were predominantly found north of the 50 m depth contour off the British coast along the Flamborough Head Front towards the Dogger Bank, off the coast of Jutland and at the Frisian Front. These changes were most likely attributed to stronger frontal systems in 2000 caused by the increased inflow of Atlantic water masses in relation to the hydro-climate change in the late 1980s. 相似文献

Ion densities and composition are investigated in a time varying model aurora. There is a time lag between turning on the source of ionization and the resulting increase in ion densities that depends on the species and the height level in the ionsophere, so that altitude profiles of auroral electron densities evolve with time. Characteristic buildup times for the ionization are a few seconds at the altitude of maximum energy deposition, increasing to tens of seconds above and below this level. A wide range of composition ratios, n(NO+/n(O2+ and n(NO+/n(O+), can be expected, depending on the time an observation is made during buildup or decay of ionization. The concentrations of atomic nitrogen and nitric oxide increase as a result of auroral ionization, but the associated characteristic times are long compared to the average duration of ‘auroral event’. Thus, intermittent auroral bombardment could result in a gradual buildup of these minor neutral constituents in the auroral atmosphere. Variations in the electron density during pulsating, fluctuating or coruscating aurora lag the source function variations by a few seconds in a typical aurora. 相似文献

Primary production was measured during two Lagrangian experiments in the Iberian upwelling. The first experiment, in a body of upwelled water, measured day-to-day changes in phytoplankton activity as the water mass moved south along the shelf break. Nutrient concentrations decreased over a five day period, with concomitant increases in phytoplankton biomass. Initially the maximum phytoplankton biomass was in the upper 10m but after four days, a sub-surface chlorophyll maximum was present at 30m. Depth-integrated primary production at the beginning of the experiment was 70mmolC.m−2.d−1 (838mgC.m−2.d−1) and reached a maximum of 88mmolC.m−2.d−1 (1053mgC.m−2.d−1) on day 3. On day 1, the picoplankton fraction (<2μm) was slightly more productive than larger (>5μm) phytoplankton, but the increase in overall production during the drift experiment was by these larger cells. Nitrate was the dominant nitrogen source. As nutrient concentrations declined, ammonium became increasingly more important as a nitrogen source and the f-ratio decreased from 0.7 to 0.5. Picoplankton cells (<2μm) were responsible for most (65–80%) of the ammonium uptake. The C:N:P uptake ratios were very close to the Redfield ratio for the first four days but as nutrients became depleted high C:N uptake ratios (11 to 43) were measured. Over the period of the experiment, nitrate concentration within the upper 40m decreased by 47.91mmolN.m−2. In vitro estimates, based on 15N nitrate uptake, accounted for 56% of the decrease in nitrate concentration observed in the drifting water mass. Ammonium uptake over the same four day period was 16.28mmolN.m−2, giving a total nitrogen uptake of 43.18mmolN.m−2.In the second experiment, an offshore filament was the focus and a water mass was sampled as it moved offshore. Nutrient concentrations were very low (nitrate was <10nmol l−1 and ammonium was 20–40nmol l−1). Primary production rate varied between 36mmolC.m−2.d−1 (436mgC.m−2.d−1) and 21mmolC.m−2.d−1 (249mgC.m−2.d−1). Picophytoplankton was the most productive fraction and was responsible for a constant proportion (ca 0.65) of the total carbon fixation. Uptake rates of both nitrate and ammonium were between 10 and 20% of those measured in the upwelling region. Urea could be a very significant nitrogen source in these waters with much higher uptake rates than nitrate or ammonium; urea turnover times were ca. one day but the source of the urea remains unknown. Urea uptake had a profound effect on calculated f ratios. If only nitrate and ammonium uptake was considered, f ratios were calculated to be 0.42–0.46 but inclusion of urea uptake reduced the f ratio to <0.1. The primary production of this oligotrophic off-shore filament was driven by regenerated nitrogen. 相似文献
