We calculate the D/H ratio of CH4 from serpentinization on Titan to determine whether Titan’s atmospheric CH4 was originally produced inside the giant satellite. This is done by performing equilibrium isotopic fractionation calculations in the CH4-H2O-H2 system, with the assumption that the bulk D/H ratio of the system is equivalent to that of the H2O in the plume of Enceladus. These calculations show that the D/H ratio of hydrothermally produced CH4 would be markedly higher than that of atmospheric CH4 on Titan. The implication is that Titan’s CH4 is a primordial chemical species that was accreted by the moon during its formation. There are two evolutionary scenarios that are consistent with the apparent absence of endogenic CH4 in Titan’s atmosphere. The first is that hydrothermal systems capable of making CH4 never existed on Titan because Titan’s interior has always been too cold. The second is that hydrothermal systems on Titan were sufficiently oxidized so that C existed in them predominately in the form of CO2. The latter scenario naturally predicts the formation of endogenic N2, providing a new hypothesis for the origin of Titan’s atmospheric N2: the hydrothermal oxidation of 15N-enriched NH3. A primordial origin for CH4 and an endogenic origin for N2 are self-consistent, but both hypotheses need to be tested further by acquiring isotopic data, especially the D/H ratio of CH4 in comets, and the 15N/14N ratio of NH3 in comets and that of N2 in one of Enceladus’ plumes.  相似文献

The supernova injection model for the origin of the short-lived radionuclides (SLRs) in the early solar system is reviewed. First, the meteoritic evidence supporting the model is discussed. Based on the presence of 60Fe it is argued that a supernova must have been in close proximity to the nascent Solar System. Then, two models of supernova injection, the supernova trigger model and the aerogel model, are described in detail. Both these injection model provide a mechanism for incorporating SLRs into the early solar system. Following this, the mechanisms present in the disk to homogenize the freshly injected radionuclides, and the timescales associated with these mechanisms, are described. It is shown that the SLRs can be homogenized on very short timescales, from a thousand years up to ∼1 million years. Finally, the SLR ratios expected from a supernova injection are compared to the ratios measured in meteorites. A single supernova can inject enough radionuclides to explain the radionuclide abundances present in the early solar system.  相似文献

Chondrules represent one of the best probes of the physical conditions and processes acting in the early solar nebula. Proposed chondrule formation models are assessed based on their ability to match the meteoritic evidence, especially experimental constraints on their thermal histories. The model most consistent with chondrule thermal histories is passage through shock waves in the solar nebula. Existing models of heating by shocks generally yield a good first‐order approximation to inferred chondrule cooling rates. However, they predict prolonged heating in the preshock region, which would cause volatile loss and isotopic fractionation, which are not observed. These models have typically included particles of a single (large) size, i.e., chondrule precursors, or at most, large particles accompanied by micron‐sized grains. The size distribution of solids present during chondrule formation controls the opacity of the affected region, and significantly affects the thermal histories of chondrules. Micron‐sized grains evaporate too quickly to prevent excessive heating of chondrule precursors. However, isolated grains in chondrule‐forming regions would rapidly coagulate into fractal aggregates. Preshock heating by infrared radiation from the shock front would cause these aggregates to melt and collapse into intermediate‐sized (tens of microns) particles. We show that inclusion of such particles yields chondrule cooling rates consistent with petrologic and isotopic constraints.  相似文献

During 2004 the Cassini/RPWS (Radio and Plasma Wave Science) instrument recorded about 5400 SEDs (Saturn Electrostatic Discharges), which were organized in 4 storm systems and 95 episodes. A computer algorithm with different intensity thresholds was applied to extract the SEDs from the RPWS data, and a statistical analysis on the main characteristics of these SEDs is performed. Compared to the SEDs recorded by the Voyagers in the early 1980s, some characteristics like SED rate, intensity, signal duration, or power spectrum are similar, but there are also remarkable differences with regard to time occurrence and frequency range: The first appearance of SEDs (storm 0) was recorded by RPWS from a distance of more than 300 Saturn radii at the end of May 2004, followed by storm A in mid-July, storm B at the beginning of August, and the most prominent storm C throughout most of September. There were also significant intervals of time with no detectable SED activity, e.g., SEDs were practically absent from October 2004 until June 2005. No clear indication for SEDs below a frequency of 1.3 MHz could be found. We suggest that the SED storms A, B, C, and possibly also storm 0 originate from the same storm system residing at a latitude of 35° South, which lasted for several months, waxed and waned in strength, and rotated with the Voyager radio period of Saturn. The SED source might be located in the updrafting water clouds beneath the visible cloud features detected in the Cassini images.  相似文献

Aquaculture, like terrestrial farming, cannot achieve economic and sustainable production without high performing genetic stocks tailored to the conditions under which they are grown. It is essential, therefore, that aquaculture investment includes genetics and biotechnology to adapt marine livestock to the novel conditions of intensive aquaculture and to the demanding markets into which they are sold. The return on investment in well-structured breeding programmes can be very high, and significant performance and economic gains have been demonstrated in multiple species. Many factors must be considered in designing a genetic improvement programme, including the reproductive biology of the species and the identification of realistic and commercially relevant breeding goals based on the resources and facilities available. This paper reviews the options available to aquaculturists and provides examples of how these are being applied to six aquaculture species in New Zealand: king salmon, hāpuku, kingfish, GreenshellTM mussels, Pacific oysters and pāua (abalone).  相似文献

The Low Frequency Array (LOFAR) will come on line with unprecedented radio sensitivity and resolution between 10 and 240 MHz. Such a system will provide a factor of 10–30 improvement in sensitivity in the pursuit of the weak radio emission from extrasolar planets. To date, previous examinations of extrasolar planetary systems with the most advanced radio telescopes have yielded a negative result. However, the improvement in sensitivity by LOFAR over current systems will increase the likelihood of extrasolar planet detection in the radio. We apply radiometric models derived previously from the study of planets in our solar system to the known extrasolar planets, and demonstrate that approximately 3–5 of them should emit in the proper frequency range and with enough power to possibly become detectable at Earth with LOFAR.  相似文献

In this paper we investigate two major issues: (1) What are chondrules, and (2) why do they exist? We review the literature pertaining to each question and explore answers. We discuss the diversity of chondrules, especially with regard to their igneous textures and compositions. We review the constraints that have been placed experimentally on the thermal histories of chondrules and list those fundamental properties that all chondrule formation models must explain quantitatively in order to be considered predictive, quantitative models. We provide background on the three major classes of chondrule formation models currently being discussed, and scrutinize each with respect to how well they adhere to the experimental constraints placed on chondrule formation. Finally, we list several unresolved issues that are now or will soon be at the forefront of chondrule research.  相似文献

REE distribution, strontium content and oxygen isotopic composition have been studied in the Lower Cretaceous dolomites and their interbedded and/or parental limestones of Central Tunisia. Dolomites, as indicated by previous sedimentologic, geochemical and isotopic study, are different in origin. Environments of dolomite formation include: evaporitic sabkha, deep phreatic, karst and lacustrine. With the exception of the sabkha environment, dolomitizing fluids presumably have been essentially meteoric. The comparison between REE distributions in dolomites and limestones clearly suggests that the general shapes of the REE patterns are preserved during dolomitization. Nevertheless, the total REE amounts are somewhat lowered in dolomites comparatively to parental limestones. Moreover, within the dolomites, the total REE contents are positively correlated to the Sr and δ18O contents; thus indicating that the decrease in REE, Sr, and δ18O contents is related to a decrease in the salinity of dolomitizing fluids. In addition, dolomites associated with emergence surfaces (karst) are the most impoverished in REE. Furthermore, they are relatively enriched in light REE, indicating a more or less important fractionation with the REE distributions. This enrichment has been related to the influence of the inorganic complexes which favours the greatest solubility of the heavy REE in basic solution with respect to the lightest members of the REE group.  相似文献
