A convenient integral formulation (-integrals) proves useful in describing reflection effects where there is an axisymmetric illumination, and the form of the emergent intensity distribution of the reflected component can be approximated by a cosine series. The formulation is applied to close binary systems where theoretical curves for the reflected light variation are considered. The treatment proceeds to the fifth power in the fractional dimensions — i.e. including combination of the leading terms of reflection with physical distortion of the components — and is therefore consistent with the usual first order theory of photometric proximity effects in close binary systems.  相似文献

The results of evolutionary computations for massive binary systems (initial masses of the primary 10M ) with mass ratios between 0.3 and 0.8 are summarized and compared with observations in order to verify how far one can go with the conservative assumption of mass exchange. It is found that conservative mass exchange leads to acceptable first-order models of W-R and massive X-ray binaries. However, the comparison between this theory and observation reveals that for the observed systems (W-R and X-ray binaries) a preference exists for low intial mass ratios; moreover, the X-ray luminosities of the theoretical models are systematically too low, though this may be due to the adopted wind model. In addition, the influences of several parameters (distance between the components, chemical composition, primary mass, mass ratio and atmosphere) are examined. These parameters influence the remnant mass and any further evolution only marginally. Attention is also given to the effect on the system parameters of a supernova explosion of the remnant of the mass-losing component. For a large range of systems a disruption probability smaller than 25% is found.  相似文献

Cooling rates for seven hexahedrites, (Uwet, Coahuila, Walker County, Lombard, Quillagua, Hex River Mountains and Tocopilla) have been determined using a ternary diffusion controlled phase growth analysis developed by the authors. The model is applied to the exsolution and growth of plate phosphides in the kamacite phase of hexahedrites during cooling of the meteorite in its parent body. The effects of cooling rate, bulk composition, nucleation temperature and diffusion field length are considered. A unique cooling rate was determined by comparing the Ni content and width of several phosphides in a given hexahedrite to computer-generated curves of Ni content vs phosphide width. Six hexahedrites have cooling rates of approximately 2°C/106yr. One hexahedrite, Coahuila, has a somewhat higher cooling rate of 10°C/106 yr. These cooling rates fall within the range calculated by an independent method for octahedrites. The cooling rate analysis indicates that the hexahedrites, except for one possible exception, were formed in or close to the core of a parent body ~ 150 km in radius.  相似文献

The technique of titration calorimetry has been used to characterize the acidic functional groups of humic acid. Both the concentrations of acidic functional groups and the thermodynamic parameters (pKa, ΔHa, etc.) for ionization of these functional groups were determined. The calculated values confirm the generally accepted opinion that humic acid contains both carboxyl and phenolic hydroxyl groups. Furthermore, at least one-third of the phenolic hydroxyl groups are not ortho to carboxyl groups and thus cannot participate in chelation of metal ions via salicylate-like complexing sites. The nature of the remaining two-thirds of the phenolic hydroxyl groups is still unknown.  相似文献

Both spring-summer and fall-winter sand transport have been observed on the Long Island, New York, inner shelf at water depths of 20-22 m using a radio-isotope sand tracer system. The extent of dispersal of the tagged, fine sand was measured at 3 week intervals in two 70 day experiments. In the late spring and early summer, movement was primarily diffusive in nature, extending 100 m around the line of tracer injection, while late fall-winter patterns had strong advective features, including an ellipsoidal outline extending approximately 1500 m westward of the injection points after the passage of several storms with strong northeasterly winds. Near-bottom current observations made with Savonius rotor sensors identify the event responsible for the bulk of the transport over the 135 day observation period as a storm flow of 2 days duration. Tracer and current observations together suggest that westward winter storm flow along the Long Island shelf is the major mechanism of sand transport at these depths on a yearly time scale. A least-squares fit of several of the observed winter patterns with a plume model yields average sediment mass flux lower bounds of 3.2 × 10?3 gm/cm/sec and 1.7 × 10?1 gm/cm/sec for ‘typical’ and extreme winter storm activity.  相似文献

The energetics of a current sheet that forms between newly emerging flux and an ambient field are considered. As more and more flux emerges, so the sheet rises in the solar atmosphere. The various contributions to the thermal energy balance in the sheet are approximated and the resulting equation solved for the internal temperature of the sheet. It is found that, for certain choices of the ambient magnetic field strength and velocity, the internal temperature increases until, when the sheet reaches some critical height, no neighbouring equilibrium state exists. The temperature then increases rapidly, seeking a hotter branch of the solution curve. During this dynamic heating, the threshold temperature for the onset of plasma microinstabilities may be attained. It is suggested that this may be a suitable trigger mechanism for the recently proposed emerging flux model of a solar flare.This work was done while the author was participating in the CECAM workshop on Plasma Physics applied to Active Solar Phenomena, August–September 1976 at Orsay, France, and the Skylab Solar Workshop on Solar Flares (sponsored by NASA and NSF and managed by the High Altitude Observatory).  相似文献

The dissociation of N2 by electron impact and by e.u.v. photo-absorption is studied, and it is shown that the forbidden predissociation of the numerous 1Πu and 1Σu+ valence and Rydberg states of N2 in the 11–24eV energy range is the dominant mechanism for N atom production. By measuring the absolute emission cross sections for the e.u.v. singlet bands of N2 and by using the generalized oscillator strength data of Lassettre (1974), it has been possible to construct a detailed model of the total N2 dissociation cross section which is in good agreement with the measurements of Winters (1966) and Niehaus (1967) and provides some insights into the maximum possible N(2D) yield from dissociative excitation. The total cross section for exciting N2 e.u.v. radiation in the 800Å–1100Å wavelength range has been measured and found to have a value of 3.4 ×10?17 cm2 at 100 eV under optically thin conditions. Although this result implies that large fluxes of e.u.v. photons should be excited in auroral substorms and in the airglow, they are not observed, and we show that this development is a consequence of radiation entrapment and predissociation. The total cross section for dissociating N2 by electron impact is given for optically thin and thick media. And some questions concerning the energy budget of a magnetospheric storm which are raised by these results, are discussed.  相似文献

Observations of radio emission at 3.3 mm wavelength associated with magnetic fields in active regions are reported. Results of more than 200 regions during the years 1967–1968 show a strong correlation between peak enhanced millimeter emission, total flux of the longitudinal component of photospheric magnetic fields and the number of flares produced during transit of active regions. For magnetic flux greater than 1021 maxwells flares will occur and for flux of 1023 maxwells the sum of the H flare importance numbers is about 40. The peak millimeter enhancement increases with magnetic flux for regions which subsequently flared. Estimates of the magnetic energy available and the correlation with flare production indicate that the photospheric fields and probably chromospheric currents are responsible for the observed pre-flare heating and provide the energy of flares.This work was supported in part by NASA Contract No. NAS2-7868 and in part by Company funds of The Aerospace Corporation.  相似文献
