The geometric localization technique (Pizzo and Biesecker, Geophys. Res. Lett. 31, 21802, 2004) can readily be used with Solar Terrestrial Relations Observatory (STEREO) Space Weather Beacon data to observe coronal mass ejection (CME) propagation within three-dimensional space in near-real time. This technique is based upon simple triangulation concepts and utilizes a series of lines of sight from two space-based observatories to determine gross characteristics of CMEs, such as location and velocity. Since this work is aimed at space weather applications, the emphasis is on use of COR2 coronagraph data, which has a field of view from 2.5R to 15R ; this spatial coverage allows us to observe the early temporal development of a CME, and hence to calculate its velocity, even for very fast CMEs. We apply this technique to highly-compressed COR2 beacon images for several CMEs at various spacecraft separation angles: 21 August 2007, when the separation angle between the two spacecraft was 26°; 31 December 2007 and 2 January 2008, when the separation angle was 44°; and 17 October 2008, when the spacecraft separation was 79°. We present results on the speed and direction of propagation for these events and discuss the error associated with this technique. We also compare our results to the two-dimensional plane-of-sky speeds calculated from STEREO and SOHO.  相似文献

The interpretation of multi-spacecraft heliospheric observations and three-dimensional reconstruction of structured and evolving solar wind is challenging. This is especially true for the interpretation of white-light structures observed by the Heliospheric Imagers (HI) onboard STEREO spacecraft since their appearance depends on three-dimensional geometric factors. Numerical simulations can provide global context and suggest what may and may not be observed. We use the heliospheric code ENLIL to simulate various scenarios of well-defined corotating solar wind streams and ejected transient density structures, and we generate from the solutions synthetic white-light images at various locations. We illustrate that corotating interaction regions (CIRs) show up differently in HI-2A and HI-2B and that they may appear as transient structures in HI-2A but not in HI-2B. This asymmetry is caused by differing Thomson scattering responses. Further, we illustrate that a given interplanetary coronal mass ejection (ICME) may exhibit drastically different white-light brightness depending on the observing position and that some ICMEs can eventually reach Earth without being detected by the imagers. Finally, we demonstrate application of the modeling system through simulation of the 24?–?25 January 2007, 31 December 2007 and 26 April 2008 CMEs.  相似文献

The Solar X-ray Imager (SXI) was launched 23 July 2001 on NOAAs GOES-12 satellite and completed post-launch testing 20 December 2001. Beginning 22 January 2003 it has provided nearly uninterrupted, full-disk, soft X-ray solar images, with a continuous frame rate significantly exceeding that for previous similar instruments. The SXI provides images with a 1 min cadence and a single-image (adjustable) dynamic range near 100. A set of metallic thin-film filters provides temperature discrimination in the 0.6 – 6.0 nm bandpass. The spatial resolution of approximately 10 arcsec FWHM is sampled with 5 arcsec pixels. Three instrument degradations have occurred since launch, two affecting entrance filters and one affecting the detector high-voltage system. This work presents the SXI instrument, its operations, and its data processing, including the impacts of the instrument degradations. A companion paper (Pizzo et al., this issue) presents SXI performance prior to an instrument degradation that occurred on 5 November 2003 and thus applies to more than 420000 soft X-ray images of the Sun.  相似文献

The May 20, 2012, Emilia Ml 5.9 earthquake was followed by some major aftershocks, well recorded by a large number of temporary stations that were installed to monitor the sequence. These additional recordings allowed us a thorough testing of the performance of the ShakeMap—a procedure designed to provide rapid information on the experienced ground motion. We found that the shakemaps for the May 29, 2012, Ml 5.8 earthquake, obtained using the permanent stations only, underestimate significantly the ground motion computed with the highest station density, especially for PSA at long periods (T \(=\) 3.0 s). This low-frequency motion is controlled primarily by the surface waves recorded in the Po plain: the observed site effects are likely not accounted properly by the site correction coefficient based on Vs30 as implemented in the ShakeMap procedure. The shakemaps determined during the seismic sequence have been included in an Italian national law that was passed after the 2012 earthquake. According to this law, the factories safety verifications were bound to the comparison between the shakemaps and the design acceleration required by the current national seismic code. We then decide to appraise the impact of the shakemap accuracy on the law provisions. Following the law recommendations, we have estimated the possible errors resulting from the incomplete evaluation of the ground shaking: our results show that, if the complete dataset were available at the time of the law approval, the number of buildings for which the safety check was required would have been significantly smaller.  相似文献

Using the spectroscopic sample of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 1 (SDSS DR1), we measure how gas was transformed into stars as a function of time and stellar mass: the baryonic conversion tree (BCT). There is a clear correlation between early star formation activity and present-day stellar mass: the more massive galaxies have formed approximately 80 per cent of their stars at   z > 1  , while for the less massive ones the value is only approximately 20 per cent. By comparing the BCT with the dark matter merger tree, we find indications that star formation efficiency at   z > 1  had to be approximately a factor of two higher than today (∼10 per cent) in galaxies with present-day stellar mass larger than  2 × 1011 M  , if this early star formation occurred in the main progenitor. Therefore, the λ cold dark matter (LCDM) paradigm can accommodate a large number of red objects. On the other hand, in galaxies with present-day stellar mass less than  1011 M  , efficient star formation seems to have been triggered at   z ∼ 0.2  . We show that there is a characteristic mass  ( M *∼ 1010 M)  for feedback efficiency (or lack of star formation). For galaxies with masses lower than this, feedback (or star formation suppression) is very efficient while for higher masses it is not. The BCT, determined here for the first time, should be an important observable with which to confront theoretical models of galaxy formation.  相似文献

OASI (Infrared and Sub-mm Antarctic Observatory) is the first large telescope permanently installed in Antarctica. It is located close to the Italian Base in Antarctica (Terra Nova Bay Station, latitude: 74.39 S, longitude: 164.09 E). The OASI first light was received in December 1990 when the wobbling secondary mirror was mounted. The telescope is planned to be an open facility which can operate in the wavelengths range between 350 m and 3mm. The sky coverage from OASI goes down to a declination of about-35° for a 24 hours/day observing time.  相似文献
