A new and simple method is proposed to obtain estimates of recovery functions: the Bi-Gaussian approach. Existing methods estimate recovery functions with conditional distributions where the conditioning set is all the data available. Here instead the simple kriging estimate of the Gaussian transform is proposed to be used. Results in the point recovery case are identical to the multi-Gaussian approach of Verly (1983, 1984), whereas in the non-point-support situation, an approximation is derived which saves computer time as compared to employing the strict multi-Gaussian hypothesis. Two examples compare favorably with the well-established disjunctive kriging method (discrete Gaussian model).  相似文献

A transient flow modeling analysis for potential public-supply wells on western Cape Cod, Massachusetts, demonstrates the difference between transient and steady-state recharge areas can have important implications for wellhead protection. An example of a single pumping well illustrates that commonly used steady-state time-related capture areas do not represent the recharge area and travel times of water being pumped from the well until sufficient time has elapsed for steady-state flow conditions to be established. Until that time, transient recharge areas are needed to account for the portion of water discharging from the well that entered the aquifer before pumping started. An example of two pumping wells demonstrates the same area at the water table cannot supply water to more than one well under steady-state flow conditions. Transient recharge areas to multiple wells can overlap, however, until steady-state flow conditions are established. The same area can, therefore, be a source of water to more than one well during early pumping times, and the water pumped from a given well may derive from source areas, including contaminated areas, that do not lie within the well's steady-state recharge area.  相似文献

Long-range sidescan sonar (GLORIA) data over Porto and Vigo Seamounts collected in 1978 has been re-interpreted in the light of SEABEAM bathymetric surveys conducted in 1982. The application of quantitative bathymetric information enables the interpreter to allow for artefacts inherent in the GLORIA data and to separate topography-related primary backscattering variations on the sonographs from more subtle changes that result from textural, slope and outcrop effects. The distinctions are made easier when slant-range corrected GLORIA data are available.Use of the combined survey data to precisely locate seismic profiling tracks and to identify likely areas of outcrop has allowed refined geological maps of the seamounts to be drawn and regional fault trends detected. The overall outline of the seamounts appears strongly fault-controlled.Porto and Vigo Seamounts are made up of the same geological formations and have had a similar structural history since their uplift as continental fault blocks in the Late Cretaceous to Middle Eocene period. Ravines that dissect the presumably lithified scarps bounding the seamounts may be relict features but still appear to control sediment input to gulley and channel systems in the surrounding topography. Sedimentary ridges associated with the seamounts represent anomalously thick sequences of post-Eocene material and probably result from interaction of downslope sedimentary processes and contour-following boundary currents.Contribution No. 274 from the Groupe d'Etude de la Marge Continentale (ERA 605).  相似文献

Dot mapping is a traditional method for visualizing quantitative data, but current automated dot mapping techniques are limited. The most common automated method places dots pseudo-randomly within enumeration areas, which can result in overlapping dots and very dense dot clusters for areas with large values. These issues affect users’ ability to estimate values. Graduated dot maps use dots with different sizes that represent different values. With graduated dot maps the number of dots on a map is smaller, reducing the likelihood of overlapping dots. This research introduces an automated method of generating graduated dot maps that arranges dots with blue-noise patterns to avoid overlap and uses clustering algorithms to replace densely packed dots with those of larger sizes. A user study comparing graduated dot maps, pseudo-random dot maps, blue-noise dot maps and proportional circle maps with almost 300 participants was conducted. Results indicate that map users can more accurately extract values from graduated dot maps than from the other map types. This is likely due to the smaller number of dots per enumeration area in graduated dot maps. Map users also appear to prefer graduated dot maps over other map types.  相似文献

This study was conducted to investigate the adaptability of marine mussels Mytilus edulis of increasing age to induced stress and subsequent recovery. Lysosomes, present in large numbers in the molluscan digestive gland, play a major role in intracellular digestion, and the stability of their membranes provides a sensitive biomarker for generalised cell injury which is correlated with the stress response of the whole animal. Lysosomal stability was measured in mussels of three age groups (2–4, 6–8 and ≥ 10 years) during exposure to hypoxia/hyperthermia and, in a separate experiment, to copper (50 ppb: where billion = 109). The lysosomal reactions of all three age groups to both experimental stressors were similar. However, recovery from the induced pathological reactions was most pronounced in the youngest animals and least apparent in the oldest group. These findings indicate that the stress reaction is independent of age but that the potential for recovery of lysosomal integrity is age-related.  相似文献

The solubility of nantokite (CuCl(s)) and the structure of the predominant copper species in supercritical water (290-400 bar at 420 °C; 350-450 °C at 290 bar; 500 °C at 350 bar; density = 0.14-0.65 g/cm3) were investigated concurrently using synchrotron X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) techniques. These conditions were chosen as they represent single phase solutions near the critical isochore, where the fluid density is intermediate of typical values for vapour and brine and is highly sensitive to even small changes in pressure. X-ray absorption near edge spectroscopy (XANES) and extended X-ray absorption spectroscopy (EXAFS) analyses show that aqueous copper occurs in a slightly distorted linear coordination in the solutions studied, with an average of 1.35(±0.3) Cl and 0.65(±0.3) O neighbours. The solubility of CuCl(s) decreases exponentially with decreasing water density (i.e., decreasing pressure at constant temperature), in a manner similar to the solubility behaviour of salts such as NaCl in water vapour. Based on this similarity, an apparent equilibrium constant for the dissolution reaction of 0.5 ± 0.4 was calculated from a regression of the data at 420 °C, and it was determined that each Cu atom is solvated by approximately three water molecules. This indicates that under these conditions, copper solubility is controlled mainly by the structure of the second-shell hydration, which is essentially invisible to the XAS techniques used in this study.These results demonstrate that for a supercritical fluid near the critical isochore, decreasing pressure may initiate precipitation of copper even before boiling or phase separation. Such a process could be responsible for near-surface ore deposition in seafloor hydrothermal systems, where supercritical fluids experience rapid pressure changes during the transition between lithostatic and hydrostatic domains.  相似文献

This article focuses on the water distribution network in Paris, from the 1830s, when most Parisians got their water from public fountains and private wells, to the 1930s, by which time almost all of the capital’s inhabitants had been connected to the same network and enjoyed a standard service. It contributes, by a detailed analysis of the entire chain of mediators and mediation, to specify how the modern infrastructure ideal actually took form. In that aim, we analyze the manner in which each actor (public as well as private), in accordance with his/her constraints and resources, which depend on his/her position in the social space, was able to conceive of his/her environment, define objectives, confront problems, make choices and deploy a whole range of frequently innovative practices. In order to understand the underlying factors, our task consists in identifying the actors, modi operandi, progress and phases involved in universalizing water services. Spatially analyzing the extension of the water network, this article demonstrates that the process of universalization, far from being the inexorable and linear outcome of the action of a small number of “major historical forces”, was the upshot of the actions of a whole range of actors acting in specific different geographical, social, economic and technical contexts. The achievement of the “modern infrastructural ideal” as a macro-social phenomenon was ultimately down to a long accumulation process of a multitude of actions, interactions, conflicts and learning processes.  相似文献

Together, recent gravity and high-resolution aeromagnetic datasets are used to qualitatively investigate the upper- and middle-crustal geometry of the Middle Paleozoic Gaspé belt in the northern Appalachians. Long-wavelength potential field anomalies define two sub-basins that are divided by northeast trending gravity highs. For each sub-basins, gravity lows correlate with the youngest rock units.Maps that highlight anomalies associated with near surface features, at the expense of those related to deeper sources, provide an important supplement to the spatially discrete observations derived from bedrock mapping. Analysis of such maps indicates that the sub-basins are characterized by different structural patterns and that faults trending obliquely compared to the main structural grain have been previously underestimated.The geometry of the Gaspé belt as revealed by this integrated geophysical and geological study bears similarities with orogens exhibiting lateral extrusion. This geometry is interpreted as the result of a heterogeneous strain regime in front of an indenter corresponding to the Early Paleozoic Gander/Dunnage crustal block. The indentation tectonic model is supported by: 1) the various strike and kinematic of faults that suggest a strongly heterogeneous strain regime; 2) the greater geological complexity and the occurrence of faults with a significant thrust component in front of the indenter; 3) the predominance of dextral strike-slip faults in the eastern Gaspé Peninsula that result in lateral material transport away from the indenter; 4) the location of abundant Devonian magmatic dykes, sills and stocks in a fault-bounded zone that experienced local extension; 5) the occurrence of block rotation.  相似文献
